Yelp
Good people of Yelp, listen up. You must, must, MUST take a trip to Oaklyn and try Aunt Berta's Kitchen. It is heaven on earth; the soul of the South in your mouth. It is just that good.
I had been wanting to try Aunt Berta's for awhile. Tonight, I braved the torrential downpour, waded through a puddle, and popped in. I had called in an order ahead of time and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes -- and it was!
The place itself was packed. It's cozy inside, and the staff seemed to know what they were doing. After a short wait, I was given my food, which instantly filled my car with the beautiful scents of the soul. Or something that smells like deliciously cooked meats.
Menu prices have gone up from what is on their website -- and ribs cost an extra buck. Still, at $12 for the "mix and match" option, they can't be beat.
For sides: I thought I ordered the macaroni salad, but I could have said "macaroni and cheese" instead, so it's fine. I'll try the salad the next time around. Maybe. After all, the mac and cheese was just. Well. I inhaled it in a similar fashion to how a dog eats a bacon treat. Let's just put it that way. My other side, fries, were coated in seasoning and cooked just right.
Meat #1: Ribs. When I picked one up, it literally fell off the bone. I didn't realize that happens in real life. It was so tender, you could tell it was butchered and cooked with love. You get two ribs with the mix and match deal.
Meat #2: Chicken tenders. At home, I poured some Ken's Honey Mustard into my box for the three pieces they provide. They, too, are really good. I may opt for the pork chops the next time though -- or the turkey wings. I hear (from Yelp!) that they are exceptional.
The deal comes with a side of cornbread. I'm not a big cornbread person, though, but it did add a nice "carbs" factor to the gigantic box of food.
Needless to say, I have tomorrow's lunch, dinner, and lunch the next day all already prepared, thanks to Aunt Berta.
Now, Yelpers, don't you want to make that trip to Oaklyn now??
