The Best Restaurants on Nantucket | Eater Boston

"Leah Bayer arrived on Nantucket in 1968 and began selling sweets shortly thereafter. The first grade teacher-turned-fudge shop owner has been a favorite on the island for decades. Aunt Leah’s Fudge makes more than 30 different kinds of fudge. They’re also known for chocolate-covered cranberries and saltwater taffy. The shop is situated perfectly to grab a box of sweets on your way to the ferry." - Celina Colby

Cutest little fudge shop ever. Got to meet the owner and she was the nicest lady ever and her store was very welcoming. Best fudge on the island hands down!

I was really looking forward to having a sweet piece of fudge and the woman at the counter was so unpleasant. I asked about the size of the piece and she responded with a bit of an attitude. Sorry, I asked. Most places will accommodate a smaller portioned size. I then was curious if I could combine two pieces to get the required size and again responded with a bit of a tone in her voice. Maybe she was having a bad day, it happens. I bought the fudge anyway, as I was really looking forward to it. The cashier was sweet and friendly. My husband couldn’t believe I actually bought a piece after hearing the tone of her voice. I opened it up to enjoy the fudge and thought it was fine. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Yet I certainly will not be back. Kindness matters…

Lots of fudge options here in this tucked away storefront on the wharf. Friendly folks behind the counter and they do have a description of their penuche fudge, which is like a brown sugar caramel. I got the mint chocolate chip and the chocolate marshmallow. The chocolate marshmallow was awesome. The mint chocolate chip lacked a lot of the chocolate chip. There were a couple of pieces of chocolate up top, but most of it was a lot like eating toothpaste. I'd like to think I picked poorly, but thinking about it, I think they need to mix more of the toppings throughout their pieces of fudge. Sprinkling it just on top is not enough. Had there been chocolate throughout, it would have been just fine. Fix that and this will be a 5-star place easily.

The fudge is incredibly expensive and not worth it at all. The shop reeks with a smelly odor. Do not recommend at all!

Google
A must-visit place if you visit Nantucket. A large choice of fudges. Chocolate-raspberry has currently our preference but we will probably change, you should taste every flavor before to decide which is really the best one and the list is long! We will order online what we have not yet tested, there is no bad choice!

Holy smokes. The fudge was absolutely amazing. I caught my husband sneaking it while lying in bed!!!! So dang good!!!!

This fudge was shipped to me as a “get well” gift and it was DELICIOUS!! Will definitely be ordering more!

Google
Yes, the fudge here is good, but the owner (the older blonde lady) just tried to pull a fast one on me and I will not be visiting this establishment again. I had selected the last piece of the cookies and cream fudge on display and as I was paying I noticed the owner whispered to her employee something. She had given her a new piece of cookies and cream fudge and she cut a DIFFERENT piece from the one weighed and tried switched it in the box. I questioned and asked if that was a different piece and she said that she didn’t want to give me the end piece and that’s why, but I pointed and asked well I want the middle piece especially one with more cookie pieces (and the piece you just put in is an end piece). The worker took the piece out and alas, it was an end piece with barely any cookies in it for the cookies and cream fudge it is supposed to be. It wasn’t worth fighting to have them re-weigh the piece but it was visibly smaller than the original piece I paid for. The owner is super pushy. I get that you want to sell your fudge and it’s off season, but don’t try to pull fast ones on customers.

Yelp
I am not a fudge person but the chocolate peanut butter fudge is very good. If you end up loving it but don't live in the area, they do ship!

Yelp
Cute little candy shop. Stopped to get a few gifts while on Nantucket. Bought whale poop and turtles. Cashier was friendly and helpful offering to ship purchases. The turtles were delicious. Prices are high.

Yelp
Yes it is true. I spent 7.49 for a cup of ice coffee. Yes, .... but according to their sign, it was suppose to be the best. This is a new record of the most expensive cup of ice coffee. To tell you the truth, it taste the same as the 3.50 version. But this is Nantucket if that makes a difference. I am not sure what the going rate is for coffee in Nantucket Their fudge looked delicious. The place is set back in an alley from the street but they have a sign to catch your eye. I am not sure I would return for coffee. Take it or leave it.

Yelp
Aunt Leah's is a Nantucket staple! You can find so many different types of delicious fudge here. You won't be disappointed. The decor is minimal and all about the fudge. In many ways, it feels like an old school Nantucket relic.

Yelp
Ordered a chocolate sampler box online on 12/12/24, expecting delivery within a few days. I paid for USPS priority shipping at checkout, which was my only choice. The box finally arrived on 12/26, 12 days after I ordered, too late for Christmas gifting. But biggest disappointment wasn't the lousy shipping, or non response to the email I sent Aunt Leah about the delayed shipping. it was the quality. For $39 I expected "gourmet chocolates" as advertised. What I received was a box of chocolates that weighed 8.5 ounces total including the box itself, and had 15 total little compartments of hard, old, stale poor-quality candy including two pieces of taffy and few chocolate covered raisins. After 12 days of shipping, the candy had jostled out of the individual compartments and was a total mess. A total POS. I have had better quality candy from Walmart. A $5 dollar box of Russell Stover candy from Walgreens is better. Gas station candy is better. This was NOT hand made. It was shitty candy from some shitty factory that was slapped in a red box with Aunt Leah's name on it and passed off as "gourmet". I was so ashamed of the quality I threw it away rather than gift it to my son-in-law, who will eat anything. This crap was made for people who will eat anything. Aunt Leah should be ashamed to have her name on this product. It is nothing at all like her fudge, which we love. I feel duped and am totally pissed that I paid $39 plus $12.95 shipping for a box of crap that took 14 days to get from Nantucket to Oklahoma. Do yourself a favor and don't be an idiot like me. And shame on you Aunt Leah for peddling this shit you KNOW you didn't make. And if you did make it, you should be even more ashamed. Buyer beware.

Yelp
Super small inside and right off Main Street so feels touristy but also homey. Love the exterior. Tons of flavors which is awesome. The smallest size is a quarter pound which is huge if you're just looking for a bite - and you can only get a 2, 4, or 8 pack which isn't very convenient. The fudge was phenomenal, it's super smooth and creamy. The chocolate peanut butter is fabulous, as is the chocolate salted caramel. The cookies and cream was not as good. Only other complaint is that Aunt Le can be very rude to customers and off putting. Luckily the fudge was worth it

Jac D.

Yelp
charging 10 dollars for a piece of fudge is INSANE. Fudge is good but. Wow. Policy should at least be that before you cut it you disclose that it's going to be 10 dollars for a small piece and then it's awkward to be like... yo why is it $17.50 for an iced coffee and piece of fudge??? Never coming back wow I used to love this place growing up back when a piece of fudge was like $4 (5 years ago).

Yelp
Fudge was good, but salt water taffy is the standout. Very intense flavors. Loved the cinnamon. Not dull and bland like most beach taffy. This stuff is zippy!

Yelp
I succumbed to a rare sugar urge and I am happy to report I was not disappointed to have done so. In general, I really don't have much of a sweet tooth. I am rarely someone who orders or eats desserts, candy or sweets. And more recently have decided to assiduously avoid things made with sugar. It's much harder for me to distract myself from salty snacks. That said, certain sweet treats do every now and again tempt me and I give in. I am not entirely immune to dessert-itis. And this charming shop is as cute as a button and lured me straight inside. Once the aroma hit me, I knew I was a-goner. The nice owner who is also the fudge maker was there. She and another staff person gave us generous samples of whatever we wanted and even of some things we hadn't asked for but that they thought we just had to try. So I purchased some penuche which has always been my favorite kind of fudge and then a chocolate and salted caramel combo. There were 3 of us so I knew I would share which ameliorated my guilt. With most fudge, thankfully a little goes a long way. This was no exception. It was dense and very rich. They even include a plastic knife in the shopping bag in case you just can't wait to get home to dig in. This fudge was simply delicious. It was smooth, creamy and utterly decadent with no sugar graininess. The shop owner let me know they have a mail order business as well but I think I'll be in better control now that the cuteness factor and delicious aromas are across the Nantucket Sound from me. This fudge would however make a lovely hostess or other gift for someone special so I may consider that now that I'm back on the mainland. Getting some of this fudge as a surprise in the mail would be great. It was a "Labor Day away" holiday treat which made it all the more special.

Susan S.

Yelp
I was overwhelmed with the variety of flavors of fudge available. The fudge was phenomenal especially Birthday Day Cake and Cookies and Cream. Only negative is the cost is a bit high, but so is the rent on Nantucket.
google avatar

Jaimee A.

Yelp
This is definitely good fudge - but not the best in the world like the sign says. We ordered penuche, rocky road and chocolate but got a very small piece of rocky road and a big piece of chocolate - no penuche. That being said, it was very tasty.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Good price for great quality fudge. We ultimately decided to go with the s'mores flavor and it did not disappoint. The fudge was super rich and sweet. We ended up finishing the quarter pound we got in about an hour. The service was also great as they gave us samples of any flavor that we wanted. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
A real Nantucket treat that is hard to beat! The best handmade fudge that you will ever find. Local favorites and the usual chocolate too! With great service and the owner on site you will never be disappointed. A great memory of Nantucket that will not break the bank, and once you are addicted you can order a taste of Nantucket to be shipped to your doorstep.

Yelp
I was so surprised to see this place only has a 2.5 stars. The fudge is superb (Best I've ever had), the staff is friendly and super helpful. The owner was present and very friendly. they had a great selection of other candy as well and the staff even helped me pick out some nostalgic candies from the 60's for my mom's 50th Surprise party. For me it's a must stop when I go back to Nantucket.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
So good!!! You've gotta stop by Aunt Leah's next time you're in Nantucket and treat yourself to some fudge and salt water taffy. Located right by the wharf, it's a must-do before you get back on the ferry to head home. This is some of the creamiest, yummiest fudge I've ever had. Try to chocolate peanut butter (their most popular) the cookies-n-cream, or the vanilla macademia-- all my faves. ;-) It's super pricey, and they won't let you buy less than 1/4 pound at a time (waaayyyy too big of a hunk for me to eat myself-- I still have over half left 2 days later), but totally worth it.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Skip this place. Poor service, very over-priced, bad attitude, and plain rude. A small handful of chocolate-covered cranberries costs approx. $9.50. They refused to give me a box for fudge I purchased (since it was a gift and I didn't want it to get smushed on the way home) unless I bought at least a pound, which they neglected to tell me when I was selecting the fudge. Fudge is fine, but does not stand out at all. Advice? Skip this place, and wait until you get back to Cape Cod and buy goodies of better quality for reasonable prices, with much better customer service.

Yelp
Tucked away in a remote corner and loving fudge I visited this teeny tiny fudge shop. It's also filled with penny candies ( not costing pennies any longer) the staff were like robots and not at all friendly. As a visitor to the island for the first time I wouldn't waste my time going back there.
google avatar

Lucullus L.

Yelp
I typically don't like fudge, but Aunt Leah's is wonderful and worth a try. It has the perfect consistency, not grainy at all. I tried the chocolate, maple, chocolate/vanilla, and penuche. The best was the plain chocolate. You won't be disappointed. If you can save money by purchasing a lot, do it.

Jocelyn H.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with fudge, and this place is the best of the best. It doesn't even compete with other fudge options as far as I'm concerned. I had Kilwin's a few weeks ago because it's in my parents' town and in-laws' town...they don't even come close to being as delicious as Aunt Leah's.
google avatar

Meghan O.

Yelp
The first time I went into Leah's was with my Mom, who proceeded to not shut up about how incredible the fudge she just bought there was. I didn't even try the fudge because I didn't like it...until I tried Leah's! The owner was very talkative and encouraged me to try the top seller (chocolate + peanut butter) for myself when I went in there to buy fudge for somebody else. I did and then went back a THIRD time to buy literally a POUND of pumpkin pie fudge and then (bargain!) a half-pound of another flavor that came for free with the pound I bought. The two other people there were not very friendly, but the owner was open and funny and engaging with us. She was very generous with samples and yeah, her fudge is definitely the best I've ever had. We tried Nantucket Candy and the fudge didn't even compare (again, I don't even really like fudge but Leah's made me a believer)!! The candy at Nantucket Candy was awful in general. All fudge is homemade there, fresh, soft and flavorful. Go to Leah's for fudge!!! Even just to sample a bunch.

C C.

Yelp
I buy fudge here every summer while visiting Nantucket. The staff members are friendly, and it's nice to get free samples. The fudge is very good, but I was disappointed to see the price is now up to $24.99/lb.!! That's more than $10 higher than the price I pay per pound at home.

Yelp
I love Aunt Leah's Fudge!!!! Oh mon dieu. Tasty tasty, i live going in, great conversations and I always get the opportunity to try about 3 different flavors;)

Janie H.

Yelp
I had to come back and update my review. Aunt Leah's Fudge Shop just won MSN.com's fudge shop award for the best fudge! I;m not really surprised. It's so good! Don't miss this friendly Nantucket gem.

L W.

Yelp
Not just excellent fudge, but an enjoyable experience all the way around! From the moment one walks in and is offered a chocolate covered cranberry and a sample of fudge, to leaving with packages containing the same, there are friendly, smiling faces helping you decide between the abundance of flavors. Additionally, it's clear the young employees are thriving under the mentorship of the owner.
google avatar

Jasper L.

Yelp
I wish I could respond to reviews, because some of these are hilarious. First off, Aunt Leah makes all of her fudge herself, so yeah, it's expensive, especially when you live on Nantucket island, where EVERYTHING is expensive. Second: Aunt Leah used to be a school teacher, so if she was 'mean' to any kids, it was probably due to them being little brats. Thirdly, it is utterly absurd that anybody was refused a box for their fudge: that doesn't happen. I'm pretty sure that the one-star reviews are from tourists and people wanting to cause trouble.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Delicious fudge with amazing service! My husband and I stopped into Aunt Leah's and were not disappointed. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
I always stop here when I'm in nantucket! Go in and get a free sample. My faves are chocolate m&m or chocolate marshmallow.
google avatar

Matt T.

Yelp
I have been to this place many times. The fudge tastes great and I was hoping to come back soon again. When I did, I was super mad and disappointed. The Fudge is still great tasting but the bad part is the customer service. The new staff whom I did not see last year were the worst. When I asked for help, the women just stared at me and went somewhere inside without saying a word. Still it is getting a two star because of the fudge.
google avatar

Trina K.

Yelp
Decent fudge but pretty pricey because it is right up the street from the ferry. I bought penuche and peanut butter. They claim to have the "world's best fudge" but in my mind that title goes to Steel's Fudge in Ocean City, NJ.
google avatar

E. UnTiger S.

Yelp
I am not a fudge person, but the fudge sample I had here was scrumptious. Also, the beach plum jam, while more expensive than that found at the whaling museum gift shop, has better ingredients. Hurray for Aunt Leah's!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Aaahhh, Aunt Leahs fudge....she's made it long after the penny candy store closed that was next to A&P. I give her credit for perseverance and staying true to her roots. Its good fudge but doesn't blow the doors off. She has a decent selection of candy but that's about it. You will even find Aunt Leah hard at work making the fudge most days (plus you get free samples).
google avatar

Kat C.

Yelp
Stopped in for the "free sample" and the sign that said coffee. This is not a coffee shop, it's a fudge shop and the fudge was creamy and fresh. Sampled sea salt caramel, can't really go wrong with that. I did buy some chocolate covered cranberries which I have to stop myself from snacking on...very good and bought vanilla Heath bar and Jamaican coconut fudge. Haven't indulged in that treat yet but I'm sure it will be terrific. The gentleman outside was sweet, friendly and convincing to try a sample. Inside, the service was a bit different, but ok - a bit rushed and can be intimidating if you don't know what you want. It wouldn't stop me from going back.

Cynthia W.

Yelp
Aunt Leah's Fudge is absolutely the best fudge I've ever tasted...and that's saying a lot since my whole family LOVES fudge and we have all grown up making it, buying it, and eating too much if it! I live in California but go to Nantucket every summer. Aunt Leah's is one of our first stops when we arrive. Even when we're back on the West Coast we always order her pumpkin flavored fudge in the Fall! Who would have thought that fudge could taste this delicious?!!!

Jeremy H.

Yelp
MEAN TO KIDS. So my 7 year old daughter has been saving up her money to buy fudge and candy on this trip to Nantucket -- and Leah's owner was nothing but surly to her. She mistakenly dropped a candy (still in the wrapper) and put it back in the basket. She ultimately decided to buy gum. The owner sneered at her nickel and told her to drop candy somewhere else. A real meanie. Like buying candy from Slugworth and not Wonka. We'll never go back. Force Five candy much much nicer/friendlier to kids. If you want to have your kids subjected to surliness, go to Leah's.

Shannon O.

Yelp
Just like the number of stars indicates, "Yay! I'm a fan." If you enjoy the sweet, dense creaminess of top-quality, handcrafted, old-fashioned fudge, you're in the right place. Yes, it's a tad overpriced, but you're on Nantucket! Did you come to a touristy island for the bargains? Of course not. Luckily, you can sample anything you want before you buy. And unlike some of the other reviews, I found the counter salesperson to be helpful and courteous.

Spc S.

Yelp
Sinfully good. No trip to Nantucket is complete without a stop at Leah's fudge for a free sample(!) and a box of fudge to go :) Smooth as can be. Delicious! And the most fabulous flavors...

Sue J.

Yelp
Great fudge, nice people. Have been going to Nantucket for 16 years, I always stop here and you should too. A classic!

Caitlin B.

Yelp
Aunt Leah's fudge is hands down the BEST fudge I've ever had. Get the penuche, you won't regret it.

Melissa N.

Yelp
Aunt Leah's fudge is so good! We stop every time we are on the island. It never disappoints. Yes, it's pricey, but it is delicious! They will give you free samples. The chocolate covered cranberries are also great.

Neil K.

Yelp
as a total chocoholic and fudge lover, gotta rate this place as one of the best I've ever experienced -- got their card and will be ordering shipments of pounds of their fudge -- simply terrific
