The 8 Best Filipino Restaurants in Daly City, South San Francisco, and Colma | Eater SF

"Locals know to come here for cakes for any celebration or family get-together. But in addition to the perfect birthday cake, Auntie Em’s also serves up a great selection of traditional Filipino pastries like cheese rolls, bibingka (glutinous rice cake with coconut milk), cassava cake, and buko pie (coconut custard). If you have to grab just one thing, go with their famous ensaymada, preferably the dulce de leche or ube version, which are perfectly soft, buttery, and lightly sweet." - Elaine Wu

I've been going here off and on for a few years now.   I remember when they first opened and thinking the cheese bread was the hidden gem.  It was during the time when Portos was the thing and people would bring them back by the boxes to share.  I thought us having something similar and close to home was a treat. I recently came here on Easter to buy some desserts for the family.  The place hasn't changed.    It's a small area to pick and choose the items you want.   It looks like they have hired help now. Desserts I got this visit: 1. Bibinkga kakanin-  the latik on top looked so tasty.  $15 for a mini container was steep but it was gone in a heartbeat.  It was messy and ma kunat.  Tagalog at times just explains it better iykyk.  I could've polished one container off on my own. 2.  Mango graham dessert - The lady didn't do a good job explaining this but I remember watching someone on YouTube make this.   It was good but the mango looked past its prime some didn't look edible.  I just picked those off and it wasn't bad.  It was the only one left that's why I ended up getting it. 3.  Cheese ensaymada & ube ensaymada - For $4.50 and the size of it,  it's a bit pricy.   It's smaller than Goldilocks but it is delicious. Its my occasional treat so why not. This place is a little pricy but worth it for the occasional treat for yourself.  They have a lot of good delicacies to choose from.

Auntie Em's is a great gem in the wall for pastry and cakes. I ordered chicken & beef empanadas, cheese rolls, cupcakes, and ube ensayamada. My in laws love the assorted cupcakes and empanadas. The cheese rolls are very crunchy as well. I pre-ordered the Halo Halo cake and it was delicious but a little bit too much coconut. I'd come back again and order more delicious pastries

My first time at Auntie Em’s. I had their baked cassava and loved it. Next time I want to try something new. Everything there looks good.

Well it turns out that Aunt Em is indeed friendly. Bring cash. It's 4 stars because over all we only enjoyed 2 out of 12 items. We but keep reading to see our favorites and must try. We went on a Sunday afternoon and everything was in stock, fresh and available. We bought one of EVERYTHING because we hadn't had any of these pastries before. Most of them are a repeat of the same ingredients used in a different way. Butter, Sugar, Coconut in most of it. Everything was sweet, not overly sweet but even the savory items we slightly sweetened. The four of us tried everything right away. Here is what would consider we ordering again: Cheese Rolls⭐️ $2 ea Cheesy bread roll sweet, super flaky like baked fila dough coated with a sugar butter glaze. We could have order a couple of dozen. Ube Ensaymada $4 Brioche bread buttery rich filled with ube extract and topped with cheese. The other flavored Ensaymadas were dolce de leche and cheese in the center, sweet, salted granulated cheese on top. In our opinion those flavors we not the business. The texture is good but not the flavor combo. And maybe these: Chicken Empanadas $4 Beef Empanadas $4 These have peas, carrots and potatoes with meat. These were decent. We tried these a million different ways so our palette for these is advanced. Buko pie $5 Young coconut custard pie You gotta love coconut to like this because it is literally a pot pie with tons sugary shedded coconut and chunks of coconut meat on the inside. Not really custardy at all. This was good but we won't get it again. The Chicharrones $8, deep fried pig skin, feet, ears. Who really ever knows, but 2 of us liked those. The other 2 of us couldn't get past the smell. Stinkier than any pork rind/ anything that I have ever smelled. We really don't have any experience with Filipino pastries so we couldn't really compare it to much. I have a feeling someone with a little more experience would really enjoy a lot of these. From what I have researched these are authentic style pastries. And would likely satisfy the tastebuds of someone looking for familiar flavors from their childhood and or travels.

Came here to try their ensaymada. It was on the dry side for me. Surprisingly, the cheese rolls are a winner!!! Auntie Em is very professional and friendly. Don't mind driving all the way out to Daly City to sample her delicious pastries.

So when Auntie Em's first opened I went to check it out. The products are definitely REALLY, REALLY GOOD, but the owner was not. I told all my friends about this place because it's really word of mouth in the Pilipino community, but they experienced the SAME "attitude" and so we all kinda stopped going but recently my best friend went and told me that the owner was super nice when she went so I decided to check it out again and I have to say that Auntie Em has redeemed herself and she was really nice and quick to help with what I wanted, so I have to put up a great post and recommend that everyone check this place out because everything she makes is really, really delicious, fresh, unique. I went twice in one week because her bibingka is GREAT and so are her chicken empanadas and ensymada, but man, she makes the BEST cheese rolls ever, even better than Portos. I will start frequenting this place again because I prefer to support independent local businesses.

Yelp
When you walk into this lovely neighborhood bakery, the sweet smells of Filipino pastries, dance in the air and fill your mind with delight as you peruse the different offerings across the display counters and refrigerated section. They have all the traditional types of pastries that you would expect such as ensaymadas as well as Leche flan, but there were some surprises, including sapin sapin and ube halaya. What I was most excited about was the bibingka with cheese, which is freshly made with banana leaf as well as the ube ensaymada. Both were amazing! The bibingka was so light and fluffy and my family and I definitely fought for the pieces which had cheese in them and the ube ensaymada was filled with some halaya which tasted super fresh. Probably a bit on the pricer side for Filipino desserts but for the quality and the love that you can taste within them, highly worth it! Service was fast, packed everything up fresh upon ordering. We were able to find street parking, no problem. They are next to a Filipino restaurant too so it might get a bit more packed around lunchtime.

Yelp
Considering Auntie Em's is one of the few authentic Filipino bakeries that have been around, I wanted to love the baked goods and write such a hyped view. However, truthfully, they were okay. I can not say much about service, ambiance, or parking as the pastries were bought for/brought to me. What was ordered: -Ube Ensaymada -Dulce De Leche Ensaymada -Buko Pandan Cupcake -Ube Cupcake Highlights: 1) Some of the pastries were soft and moist. For example, the cupcakes. 2) Ube-flavored pastries are executed well and you can taste the Ube. Ube has become such a hyped phenomenon and a highlighted flavor profile on many menus nowadays. Yet, a lot of bakeries treats and desserts barely have the Ube flavor. 3) I appreciate the pieces of young coconut added to the Buko-pandan pastries Cons: 1) Ensaymada was a bit dry. 2) Dulce de leche flavored pastries are very subtle. I guess this depends on preference. 3) Buko-pandan-flavored pastries are very subtle. 4) Expensive. For example, $4 per cupcake 5) I was not fond of the cream cheese frosting for the cupcakes. Despite my review, I would not mind giving Auntie Em's another try.

Yelp
Through stumbling upon a photo of a slice of Halo Halo cake on yelp's main page on the phone app, I discovered Auntie Em's Fine Foods & Pastries. I had never heard of them before and was surprised to learn that they are just a few minutes drive away from my house. I showed some of their dessert pictures to Mom and she was immediately sold - we went to check them out the next day, Sunday, May 12, 2024 (Mother's Day). The venue is teenie weenie. I almost missed seeing it on El Camino Real. Maximum occupancy for the customer area likely isn't more than ten persons. Upon entry, patrons have about four to six feet from the front door to the counter where you place and pick up orders. Baked goods are on display at a side table on the left wall, the window display at the front counter, and the small fridge at the right wall. No room at all for any tables or chairs inside and no seating outside, either. This place is solely for take-out orders. No parking lot, either, street parking only. Auntie Em specializes in sweet & savory Filipino bites from Ube Halaya and Bibingka Kanin to Beef or Chicken Empanadas and Chicharon. They also bake up some unique flavours of cake. Mom enjoyed the Trio Kakanin, Ube Ensaymada and Buko Pie. DJ said that the regular Ensaymada was OK. I found the Bibingka to be tasty and soft. I did wish that it had a bit of a chew, though. We also purchased a whole Nutella Sans Rival for V to try and to share with the rest of the Santos family. Everyone thought that the Nutella Sans Rival was too sweet. We agreed that regular sans rival is the more preferred by us all. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Service is straightforward and to the point. The ambiance is a small bakery where you stop by to pick up what you need and go. There is no sitting down. Our go-to move is to visit Karilagan next door and after we are done eating is to visit this spot for some ensaymada. I love good ol' ube ensaymada but I think its a bit much of sweetness that I like a good ol' classic one more. Try the Dulce de Leche Ensaymada too. Cassava...bibingka...cheese rolls...omg I'm getting diabetes just thinking about this place. Its great. This is a great Filipino dessert place and if you don't know filipino dessert, look it up and TRY IT! There's a reason why almost all Filipinos got gaut and/or diabetes. Yolo!

Yelp
I feel that this is one of a very few Philipino bakeries around. I'm personally not a fan, but have gone here several times because my coworkers enjoy some of their overly sweet pastries. The staff is always rude. The guy at the cashier can't answer any questions and their menu board is always out of date. They only take cash. I finally tried their buko pie and was seriously disappointed by their lack of flaky crust and their dull tasting coconut. I've actually stopped buying pastries for my coworkers here because I don't like the attitude this shop gives me and their arrogance in assuming that customers don't matter. And as always I find their pastries to be too sweet for my tastes.

Yelp
If it weren't for the customer service, definitely five stars. I love supporting fresh filipino bakeries. Hehe. I love love love their salted egg bibingka. When I first tried it, it arrived to my house warm and fresh out the oven. Ughhhh so good. If you aren't familiar with salted egg, you might not like it. But don't knock it til you try it. *Drool* I've tried their nutella sansrival and their bibingka kanin. The bibingka kanin is a childhood favorite for me and they nailed it. The nutella sansrival was good, but a little bit too nutty for me. Would love to try their other pastries like the ube and dulce de leche ensymada, cheese rolls, alfajores, or their other unique cakes like the halo halo cake. They recommend placing your orders over the phone 24 hours in advance as some items do run out throughout the day.

Yelp
Great customer service and a good selection of desserts. Everything that I bought was delicious. Will definitely go back to buy more

Yelp
Yum!! Quick stop to get some fresh Filipino bread! UBE ENSAYMADA - It's soooo soft. Good ube flavor. CHEESEROLL - Yummy cheese filling inside of a crispy shell. I tried to save these for breakfast next morning. Self control is a work-in-progress in me. These are just too good. Easy street parking on the same street. Still had a good selection before closing time.

Yelp
I was so lucky to finally get to try an assortment of tasty desserts, and empanadas from this particular bakery!! The last three times I've been up to South San Francisco has sadly been on a day that this bakery is closed. Every time my heart breaks! I was also a little sad that the pandan cupcakes were sold out, but not surprised at all since I was up in South San Francisco around 1 PM that means they're really just that delicious that they sell out daily! Apparently I need to leave my house earlier and drive up north faster to get one of those cupcakes or maybe a dozen! Lol The lady behind the counter was very sweet and cute. I told her I needed a couple of minutes to decide what I wanted as I took pictures and asked some friends back in San Jose if they wanted me to pick up anything for them. Lol the ambience is rather small and there was a couple ordering in front of me, but I was afraid to walk in behind them in case there wasn't enough space between the three of us. Very cute and quaint bakery, nevertheless! I loved their chicken empanadas as well as their guava cheese danishes!! I had two other pastries, and I can't remember which ones I bought now looking back at my pictures because I started snacking on them as I was driving home. But you definitely must check out this particular bakery!! I will definitely be back again!!!

Yelp
So one of my besties is Filipina and I wanted to make her birthday a little more special since she's a new mom and couldn't leave her house to celebrate her bday. Lately it seems like she's been quite nostalgic about filipino flavors and when I saw Auntie Em's get referred on the FB Group, Bay Area Eats (Hi BAEs!), I knew I had to get this cake for her. Based on these reviews, I think the cakes and uniqueness of the flavors are probably extra extra special when it is something that reminds you of childhood and that's why there are so many incredible reviews for the halo halo cake and ensaymadas! For her birthday, I ordered: 1. 8" Halo Halo Cake - which is frickin' beautiful! It has a lot of fresh cream and one layer of ube and one layer of pandan cake - topped with all the toppings/jellies you'd find in a halo halo. So cute and unique. The flavors are very subtle and it isn't too sweet, but if you like a sweeter and very flavorful cake, this is probably not gonna do it for you! 2. 4 Ube Ensaymadas - there is no wonder why this item has SO MANY good reviews. They are delicious - super ube-y, and super soft. It is kinda like an ube version of the taro bun you can get at 85 degrees, but mo' bettah. Haha, just imo, obviously! 3. Buko Pandan cupcakes - I LOVE PANDAN....butttt this one didn't do it for me. The cream cheese ball on top was a little bit off putting and it wasn't pandan-y enough! I would skip these and go for the ensaymadas! Ordering was a breeze - you can order online on facebook or call in. Just noted that they are not open on Mondays and Tuesdays AND if you have a big order, they will ask for your cc info! I personally don't email or send my cc info online cuz I am paranoid like that, so I called it in!

Yelp
This place placed save our part celebration by providing cake. Mango Tres Leche that it. I was good, moister but I honestly we always tasted mango and cake none of the tres leches flavoring at all. I honestly wants sure what to expect but for $43 it should have all the flavors that I was charged for. We tried the cheese pastry puff or something rather wasn't definitely never close to anything I've tried in the past. It was dry, very little flavor of cheese. It was flakey but not what expected at all. The lady kept saying the they were closing soon etc yet she didn't offer her best service to us, quite frankly she was annoyed the fact that we asked how fresh the pasty was. Or even offer sample since they was close to closing I mean that will only gain more repeats of customers. Unfortunately it won't be us

Yelp
I ordered 4 dozens plus a few extra cupcakes from here for my work event. Ordering was done via facebook messenger and over the phone. Staff (owner?) responded to my message was very nice. Due to ice storm, my flight to SFO was cancelled and couldn't reschedule to get there myself to pick them up. I contacted them to let them know someone else will pick up on my behalf. I asked the team to see how the cupcake was. ~~~feedback I received~~~ Everyone enjoyed it so much! I heard only positive response about how good they were and they all wanted to know where it came from. Several people especially mentioned how the frosting was so good without being overwhelmingly sweet! I think you've turned many of us into fans and we'll be heading over there for more! ~~~~~~ While I couldn't enjoy the cupcakes, I was happy to hear positive feedback from those who got to enjoy very much. Next time I am back in town, I have to be sure to stop by to enjoy their sweets.

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood and decided to swing by to grab a few things. sadly, not much was left and the rest looked depressing. :( So sad that Auntie Em's is not what I remembered it to be. However, I've been hearing good things about their cakes and saw someone post about a guava cake. I'm always searching for good guava cake after Aki's (in SJ) closed their doors so I might have to give Auntie Em's a try soon!

Yelp
South San Francisco kept secret! Delicious delectable delights for your pallet! Auntie Em's desserts are well known and a perfect treat to bring home or to take to a birthday party or a corporate event! Absolutely worth every 5 stars!!!!

Yelp
I found this place when I was searching for a special/unique birthday cake that I have never tried before. The halo halo cake caught my attention instantly. I personally love eating halo halo so I was super excited to surprise my boyfriend with it. I pre-ordered it ahead of time. Store pickup was easy. The overall halo halo cake taste was good but felt something is missing. Maybe we just prefer the halo halo dessert more than a cake form but definitely recommend to give it a try.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try this place for the longest time because I heard this was the only place in the Bay Area that had cheese rolls comparable to Porto's in LA. There is street parking right out front and it's a tiny shop nestled in between other stores. There is a QR code on the window for you to view the menu before ordering inside the store. The cheese rolls were pretty good. I believe they were $1.50 each. It was crispy on the top and remained crispy even the next day! I do think the cream cheese flavor is much stronger and it's less sweeter in comparison to Porto's. If I'm ever around the area again, I would come back and purchase some more and also try their other baked goods.

Yelp
Small, quaint, mom-n-pop shop in a small strip mall. Inconspicuous. Packed with traditional desserts modernly presented. No nonsense. Greeted immediately upon arrival. Ordered a bibingka, cheese roll, and ensaymada. All excellent. The bibingka was the star! Soft, moist, and still warm.

Yelp
This place is Filipino sweets heaven! Our family legit has bought 3 cakes from Auntie Em's in 2 months! Out of the all the ensaymadas the UBE one is the best! The Ube is fine and divine! The other including the Dulce de leche is not as sweet as i would like it to be. More savory. Please note... make Auntie Em happy and place your cake orders at least 4 days in advance ! Cakes can only be bought by preorder! My darling fiancé ordered a bday cake for my mother and transported by plane from Daly City to Orange County by freezing it and placing it in a cake holder and it held up so well! My mom was so touched and loved the taste of it! Will definitely keep coming and ordering from the place!

Ed L.

Yelp
Best buko pie ever. Check out this filling. All fresh buko. No filler. Also exceptional ensaymada with some specialty cheese (queso de bola?) and bibingka with itlog na maalat. Premium ingredients freshly baked. No skimping on quality or quantity.

Yelp
Rude owner of bakery!!! Very dissatisfied with customer service! Will not recommend to friends and family!!!

Yelp
Always on the hunt for different cakes to celebrate birthdays, I tried Auntie Em's Halo Halo cake over the weekend. While the cake was moist and light (just the way I like it), it lacked the punch of flavor that I was really expecting. I tried each of the pandan and ube cake layers by themselves to see if I could taste each flavor more distinctively, but it was still hard even with my eyes closed lol. There was also too much cream versus the cake itself, in my opinion. And for these reasons, I think the cake is a teensy overpriced at $40. While at the bakery, we decided to also pick up some extra items to try. The regular ensaymada ended up being the most memorable thing we tried and liked - it had the perfect balance of salty and sweet notes. The ube ensaymada needed more ube flavor and the cheese roll would've probably tasted better if we had re-heated it first before eating. I didn't place the cake order but I was told it took multiple calls before you're able to get through to someone on the phone. Once we were there to pick up the cake, the lady working there was super nice and even let us choose our own candles to stick into the cake.

Yelp
My order made easy. Due to pandemic, hours have changed and you must call in 1 day ahead to get what you want. I was celebrating my moms bday and I had to get her favorites. While my order was being boxed I was asked if I wanted anything else, so my daughter wanted red velvet cupcakes. They only sold it as a variety pack which includes red velvet, pandan & ube. How can I say NO?! I said SURE, I'll take it. They warned me be careful it was just freshly baked & frosting is delicate. When i got home I decided to try pandan, OH sooo good, soft, perfect sweetness. Thank you to the crew at Auntie Ems! Was hoping to see her but maybe nxt time!

Yelp
Bakery fantasy. Ube: ube sessert galore. I tried the guava cheese (better than Porto) and chicken empanada ( got potatos with chicken) all very reasonable priced. Ube coconut tapioca.

Katie P.

Yelp
Very much a hole in the wall location. Decided to give this spot a chance and came by with the kids. Two men were there, watched us walk in and promptly turned away and went to the back. The other man didn't acknowledge us either. The food in the display looked old, maybe it was just the sample pieces and they had fresh ones elsewhere? Who knows, I don't because after several awkward minutes of purposefully being ignored, we left. The place is dirty and run down, the front door was propped open and we went during open hours..not sure what the problem was! Maybe we are the wrong ethnicity for them.
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
BE AWARE: They are ALL rude!!! If you don't feel like being yelled out for being polite this isn't the place for you. I feel like you get better service at Chinese dim sum to-go places where you expect them to be rude and short maybe because they don't speak English that well. They're Filipino here so you'd expect that they'll have that hospitality and patience, NO! The desserts are alright (that's why I have an extra star). If you can't handle the nature of the business, then don't do it. Fix your attitude and maybe you'll get better reviews...
google avatar

Yelp
Went to a reunion over the weekend and someone brought ensaymadas. They were delicious! You can definitely tell that they were from a local bakery. I loved the cheese ensaymada. The ube was yummy too, not too sweet and I loved the ube filling. I'll have to swing by if I'm in the SF area to try out the other goodies!

Yelp
I ordered cupcakes for my SIL's birthday. I messaged Auntie Em via FB Messenger with my order. It was nice and easy. When I went to pick up my order, Auntie Em was very sweet. Will definitely order again. The buko pandan cupcakes are my fave.

Yelp
TLDR: Good Filipino desserts. Fair price. Would recommend 8/1/21 ~2:00pm (No wait) Worth a visit? Yes. Worth a dedicated trip? Yes, if you're craving some Bibinka. Worth the price? Yes. Everything $3-$6 for single servings. Worth a revisit? Yes. Will be back to try other treats. Scoring Weight: 100% Food, 0% Other Food: Bibinka w/ Salted Egg (4.2/5): Sweet, chewy, moist, Bibinka base. Made of rice flour, condensed milk, eggs, and sugar. A little less chewy than a Mochi-style dessert. Good texture. Not too sweet. Salted eggs slices balanced everything out. Great breakfast option. Ube Ensaymada (4/5): Great Ube color. Standard slightly-chewy base. Sweet Ube powder/crumble topping gave the Ensaymada just enough sweetness. Solid purple Ube filling that actually tasted like Ube. Big air pocket in the middle. A complete filling would have bumped it closer to a 5/5. GOOD. Dulce de Leche Ensaymada (4.1/5): Same chewy Ensaymada base. Slightly sweet. Nice caramel filling with the same large air pocket. Sweet crumble topping wasn't overwhelmingly sweet . Almond slices were a nice touch. GOOD. Would recommend. Cheese Ensaymada (3.2/5): Same Ensaymada base as Ube and Dulce de Leche. NO FILLING. Slightly salty (Parmesan-like) topping. Just enough to classify as savory. Base was still mostly sweet. Good balance but didn't have any filling. Pretty Good. Nice little shop with more treats to offer. Everything was worth getting/eating. Other: * Bathrooms: None * Parking: Street parking available. Not too bad ~2:00pm Sunday.

Yelp
Such a talented and creative baker! This review is long overdue as I've been visiting Auntie Em's for several years now. We ordered a variety of baked yumminess to impress family from Manila and Canada at a family reunion. We are a very picky, exacting, and critical family especially when it comes to food and the unanimous verdict is: EXCELLENT! A++ Overall favorites and the ones that got devoured first: Bibingkang Kakanin and Cassava Cake (better than my mom's!) When those were eaten after a few hours, my cousins were asking if there was any more extra cakes in the kitchen! = ) We should have gotten 2 of each! Favorites that I found my sisters and mom setting aside to take back with them to Washington state, Sacramento, and Upland: Ensaymada (my sister preferred the plain, my mom's favorite is the dulce de leche, while my nieces loved the ube - in fact, I couldn't find any more ube ensaymadas by dinner time!) Bibingka - Moist, airy, light, tender, and DELICIOUS! I'm so impressed. My other sister immediately placed in a gallon ziploc container one each of the ube and the one with egg were to be savored in southern California - hand carried because it's precious cargo. Let's now talk about the ube cheesecake. My husband's son is not Filipino (Nordic genes) and his girlfriend from South Carolina were served leftover ube cheesecake. For dessert, he happily ate a huge slice of it and I sent him home with 1/3 of the cake. His girlfriend just texted me asking where we bought the cake because it was SO delicious. Even non-Filipinos are impressed. And I agree - all the layers are perfection - the first is tender, delicate gelatin-like (must top with the toasted coconut), the middle is excellent cheesecake (not too sweet) and the 3rd layer of ube is balanced and not overpowering, but the chef didn't stop there - he made sure the crust was just as yummy as all the layers. My 11-yr old niece loved the sapin-sapin - beautiful, vibrant, cheerful colors. My 82-yr old auntie also enjoyed both the sapin-sapin and the ube halaya, eaten over the weekend with afternoon coffee/tea. A hit across 3 generations! The first night, I spotted my older cousin and brother having the chicharon (with home-made vinegrette dipping sauce) with their beer, and the next morning with breakfast, LOL! I had one - crispy, tasty, and light (didn't taste oily, how'd they do that?) The cheese rolls are also pretty and good to snack on throughout the day and perfect for family reunions. I would have taken photos but honestly, most of them were eaten before I had a chance. But Auntie Em's website has beautiful photos - encourage you to visit http://auntieemsfinefood.com/ If you want to impress family, friends, or colleagues - or just to treat yourself - head on over to Auntie Em's for delicious desserts that are better than Goldilock's or Red Ribbon's and Valerio's. YES. I said it. You're welcome. = ) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Yelp
I've had Auntie Em's bookmarked for a while now and never ventured over because I'm rarely in this area. Fast forward years later and my boyfriend and I were eating brunch right next door at Joann's. We got a regular chocolate cupcake, ube cupcake, cheese rolls... everything looked good behind their display case and I was happy we were able to get such desserts without having to preorder. Price wise, everything was decently priced and I was okay buying a few items to take home. Ube cupcake - it was a little weird... I'm okay eating ube flavored items, but the cream on top of this wasn't my favorite. Chocolate cupcake - standard chocolate cupcake, nothing mind blowing. Cheese rolls - were okay, but it's definitely different than Porto's and I find myself missing Porto's instead after. Overall, friendly people and affordable prices, but I can solve my sweets craving elsewhere.

Yelp
This is the second time I walk in here and ask a question and they give me a bad attitude. First time I stood there and no one asked to help me after the woman look straight at me. Today I wanted to order a cake and I ask the man that was there and he didn't even want to explain what the cake was made out of (how many layers/what kind of frosting. Super bad attitude and walked away when I was still talking to him. If I'm purchasing a cake I need to know how many layers and what it's filled with. Not sure why he works here if he's going to have a bad attitude and not want to explain what he is selling.

Yelp
Was in the mood for some Filipino dessert in the area and found this place on Yelp. They had great reviews so we gave it a try and were not disappointed! We don't eat Filipino desserts too often so everything in the store looked good and tempting to try. The lady working the counter was very nice and helped a noob with some popular recommendations. We decided to go with the following: Original ensaymada Cheese roll Bibingka Buko pie All were good but my favorite was the bibingka as it was light, fluffy and not too sweet. The ensaymada was light too with a salty sweet taste which was different. The buko pie was the most filling with the pie crust and good amount of young coconut meat filling. Glad to have found this place and will try the other stuff next time!

Yelp
Amazingly the best ensamada I've ever had First time at A.Ems visiting from East coast Ube and salted caramel are my favorite. brought some back after 5 days still good and moist after warming up in the microwave and they use real Ube

Yelp
I have not tasted anything here that is comparable to what I have tasted in the Philippines. The buko pie, which Auntie Em's is supposedly famous for and always sells out, is not up to par. The buko pies you get from the little kiosks in the SM malls in the Philippines taste better. Honestly, if I can get the right fresh coconut here in San Francisco, then I can bake a better one myself. The last time I was here, my husband asked me to buy classic enseymadas to bring to LA with us. I am not a big enseymada fan, but my husband's family seemed to like them. I got lucky that the rude old lady that worked there was not around when I picked up the order. My suggestion, please be a little friendlier to customers and also better tasting/authentic Filipino products that is not catered to American tastes.

Yelp
Saw this place featured on local news highlighting AAPI Heritage Month. The owner looked like such a nice lady that I decided to give it a try. So happy that I did. The place is quite cozy with no place to sit. It's completely carry out and special orders only. I went in search of a slice of the Mango Tres Letches cake, but it is an item that's special order only. Fortunately the settled for the Ube Cheesecake. This was absolutely delicious! Not too sweet and the flavors were perfectly married to deliver a wonderful treat. I will return to check out other options throughout the seasons.

Yelp
They currently have new hours. I called them on a Thursday afternoon to place a cake order for Saturday afternoon pick up. I was nervous because of all the negative reviews but so far so good. They picked up the phone pretty quickly and was not rude at all. They had a hard time hearing me but that wasn't a big deal. I arrived a little early for pick up so we (boyfriend and I) decided to go to a nearby supermarket. We got back to the shop about 20 minutes after my pick up time but it was fine. They greeted us and had a table set up at the door. +1 for having hand sanitizer! They went to grab our order and even showed us a quick peak. We asked for a birthday sign and they even let us choose color options. I personally feel like the service was good. I will probably update this once I try the cake tonight! *update* The cake was delicious! Not too sweet ~

Yelp
Going knock down a few stars (I'm being diplomatic), sorry Auntie Em and I don't like writing 2 star reviews, and I hardly ever, but my last experience remains consistently bad service which broke the last straw. Here's why: --Ingredients have changed --Portions are smaller --Prices are too high --Poor service I can go to Valerios, get the same type of Filipino breads, and get better service. Yup, service here with the "older lady" at the cash register. Is she Auntie Em? She's not very appreciative. Dont take my word for it, I've seen her do it with people ahead of me in line. She was so rude to everyone. Other yelp reviews shares the same frustrations. I was patient and gave her many opportunities to see if she can correct her attitude during many visits, but she thinks she's entitled and that customers should bow to her because of her overpriced Ensymada? Sorry, but this Pinoy dude knows Pinoy good food. I hope if you ever get a chance to read this, the owner who hugs the cash register and treats her staff poorly, please please, listen to your customers. Treat your customers with respect. Otherwise, you may find yourself one day waking up, "WTF happen." Pardon my French. I'm done here. Will not be coming back. FYI - those 3 boxes in the photos, almost $40 worth of baked goods that I could have gotten half the price and more at Valieros. Ask for a receipt as well. Cheers!

Yelp
Price too much. Not many selection. Don't waste your time. Very deceiving. Go somewhere else. Not going back again. Big mistake.

Yelp
Today my sweet husband surprised me by coming home with a birthday cake from my favorite local bakery. I was so moved that I had to call Auntie Em's to compliment Andrew for taking care of my hubby's thoughtful gesture. Andrew holds the fort down with quality ingredients, truly fine pastries, & a genuine smile. Delicious desserts and a few savory items are readily available on any given day. Cupcakes come in all the tropical favorites like ube (purple yam), mango, and pandan (fragrant screwpine leaf with a hint of coconut). But they also have traditional decadent flavors like chocolate ganache and red velvet. These are a few of my favorite things: * Yummy cheese rolls - the flaky puff pastry with a creamy cheese filling is as close as you'll get to Porto's, minus the 400 miles to Southern California. * Fluffy bibinka is a must - plate sized rice cakes baked atop banana leaves & studded with cheese and red egg for the perfect balance between sweet & savory. * Halo Halo Cake tastes exactly as it sounds - a light ube sponge cake layered with whip and chock-full of Halo Halo ingredients. * Guava Passion Cake - Decadent without being overly sweet, this chiffon cake has a glorious guava marmalade filling, reminiscent of the South Bay's famous Aki's Bakery. * Mango Tres Leches Cake - hands-down my favorite item in the bakeshop! Airy sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk (evaporated, condensed, & heavy cream) generously layered with ripe champagne mango slices, & garnished with more mangoes. Love the desserts here & their equally impressive customer service. You absolutely get what you pay for.

Yelp
Heard so much good things about this local filipino bakery! The cheese rolls are a must - but come early because they sell out fairly early. Definitely try the dulce de leche endaymada and the Buko pie - Heat up the buko pie when you eat it! It's amazing

Yelp
Love Auntie Ems. Everything that comes out is just the right of sweetness. Always consistent, always fresh, and just a great overall mom and pop type of shop. Use to come here more frequent in the past, but moved to East Bay, so when ever we're on the Peninsula, we make it a point to stock up on all the pastries from here!!

Yelp
Stumbled upon Auntie Em's and so glad I did. I felt like one of those naughty kids from Willy Wonka, you know Veruca or Violet, I had to try everything and I wanted it now! Anyway, I settled on the Ube (cause it's the flavor of my life) and BuKo Pandan cupcakes. They were both delicate in flavor, moist, light and fluffy. All the things a great cupcake should be! I'm just sad that I have no impulse control and devoured them far too quickly. The ladies behind the counter were super sweet and patient as I drooled over everything and changed my mind exactly 5,467 times. Ugh I just wish they were closer or better yet, had a 2nd shop in the East Bay. Hint, hint!! I know some people have complained on here that the quality has gone down, I can not attest to that since this was my first visit. All I do know is that they have some Halo-Halo with my name on it next time I'm there!

Yelp
As my extended family of 25 was walking towards Max, my wife and I stumbled upon this place. It's a really nondescript place, and if you blink you might miss it. Definitely a small place with a bunch of yummy Filipino desserts to choose from. We ordered a bunch of stuff, but by far, my favorite was the cassava. It was a nice blend of custard and cassava, with just the right amount of sweetness. Hit the spot just right after the dinner at Max. They also had some dessert empanadas which were pretty good. One thing that left a bad taste...since I was ordered more than enough, I figure I could get one of the boxes that were preformed above the display cases. You know, the same ones you get at a donut shop. The nice man asked his wife (or boss or both) if he could give a box. To which she replied they charge for box? A box charge after I just spent $20+?? wow. I buy a dozen donuts from my local donut shop and I get the box for free. Make sure if you visit, BYOB (bring your own box).

Yelp
Mom and pop shop in San Bruno. They're always nice and friendly and the pastries/desserts are great! I love coming here when I'm in the city! Two pastries I get are the cheese rolls and guava triangles.

Yelp
Got the mango cake for a birthday. Absolute hit. The mango was SO fresh and the overall cake was just so damn tasty. Can't wait to try guava next time.

Yelp
We came here after eating At PPQ. I guess we were excited to see Filipino desserts. We ordered a whole halo halo cake, Yema cake, Buko pie, 2 sets of cupcakes, 4 dulce de leche ensymada and ube ensymada, 4 cheese rolls, red egg bibingka, 2 chicken empanada. 118.00 later we sampled everything. Halo halo cake was to die for and I mean to die for. Fresh whipped cream, delicious filling and soft ube and pandan cake layers, my sis loved their buko pie and her sis enjoyed the salted egg bibingka. All in all this is well worth the trip and cost to get fresh Baked quality Filipino desserts. Lola kept calling me the boss, she is actually the boss for making these awesome goodies. Salamat po. Super masarap...means delicious.
