"After cooking out of her home for a couple of years, Belize City native Sherlette “Auntie” Williams opened her food trailer around five months ago in the heart of LA’s unofficial Little Belize, a stretch of Western Avenue that spans from below the 10 freeway to the 105. Williams cooks a small menu of Belizean fare each Saturday with help from her nephew, Douglas Jones, and his wife, Denika Jones. The rotating menu features dishes like oxtails in a thick gravy, split peas with pigtails, rice and beans (Belize’s national dish), and Wiliiams’ pudding-like tamales boiled with a banana leaf wrapped in tin foil. The filling is bone-in chicken, tomatoes, sweet peas, and onions in a deeply seasoned masa. It’s all taken to the next level with Williams’ homemade onion pepper sauce, a spicy condiment with chile habanero. Saturdays only, 11 a.m. to sell out" - Bill Esparza
