On the Grid : Aunty Peg's

"Aunty Peg's has quickly become our caffeine dealer of choice. It's an amazing cafe/shop (for all you home baristas and coffee aficionados) that's part of Proud Mary's roastery. Don't bother asking for a coffee with milk (the don't have any), here is where you can delight in getting to know your coffee (lovingly prepared) and its origins. Proud Mary as a company has always focused on the source and history of the coffees they stock and the regions they hail from – something exemplified at Aunty Peg's. Oh, they also have cold brew coffee on tap, served like beer – FTW." - Studio Fellow

The 38 Essential Melbourne Restaurants

"Melbourne’s Proud Mary Coffee runs popular brunch spot Proud Mary Cafe (with branches in Portland, Oregon, and Austin), but it’s this intimate shop and tasting room in a Collingwood warehouse where the brand focuses entirely on coffee. Sit down for a flight of single-origin espressos or try the super-smooth cold brew on tap. It’s a welcoming space, with free community cupping events held every week. Just don’t ask for cream in your coffee, since — as a barista might let you know — no milk is kept on the premises. Stock up on freshly roasted beans before leaving." - Audrey Bourget, Sharlee Gibb

10 Best Coffee Shops in Melbourne | Condé Nast Traveler

"Aunty Peg's, an offshoot of the popular Proud Mary cafe in on-trend Collingwood, serves coffee from beer taps—essentially iced coffee that's been prepared by a beer brewer in nearby Geelong. It's frothy, refreshing, and loaded with caffeine. There's espresso, too, made using beans roasted onsite. And that milk ban? It's to better showcase the complexity of the coffee—if you're keen to learn more, there's ample opportunity to interact with the baristas." - Dan F. Stapleton

I really enjoyed my coffee because of the Barista named 'James', At the beginning, I was disappointed about the coffee taste because of the coffee bean quality not the barista (Ref, I'm a coffee distributor, so I've tasted a lot of coffee, so I'm saying like this. Just My personal opinion) However, James tried making me to enjoy a lot, so I really got impressed. I WANNA SAY "THANK YOU FOR HIM", Because of you, my memory of Aunty Peg's cafe will be beautiful. And at the end I really enjoyed the coffee taste as well, and his professional attitude as an amazing barista. Thank you. I'll cheer you up, always.

This guy was POURING ZIG ZAG on my filter coffee. At first, I was impressed, but then not so much. It tasted dry and bitter, with no flavor at all (despite being a natural processed bean). I don't care how much I spend on good coffee, but I do care about how the barista treats and serves it. After all, it's Melbourne! I've heard so many great things about Aunty Peg's, and looking at the pictures I took, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, this was my experience on my first visit. Both baristas checked on me and the coffee, and when I politely mentioned what was happening with it, they chose not to fix anything. Honestly, it's the first time I haven't finished a coffee.

Such a great vibe at this café — excellent coffee, friendly service, and it’s a joy to watch the coffee being made right in front of you. Highly recommended!

I came here accidentally thinking this is a normal coffee shop with lattes, cappuccinos etc - the usual fare. Clearly I was wrong and how 😂 Came here as the space is open beyond 2pm which seems to be hard to find around this area. Anyways, we persisted and tasted couple of coffees. It was interesting and spent around $10 per coffee but unsure I will be back in a hurry. I think the option of not having any milks at all is an interesting proposition. Service was great, friendly and prompt. The place is very modernist but certainly not a cozy spot to have a yarn.

I LOVE my Aunty Peg's filter fix. I still have to pull my dick move of walking in and ordering a large hazelnut soy latté (with a smile), before deciding from the really good and varied offerings. This time, a pourover of the Mexican natural had all the pulpy red grape fruits advertised, with beautiful structure to carry the coffee and provide sanctuary on an otherwise busy day. Service here is always welcoming and knowledgeable, and I've told a work colleague I'm bringing them back with me for one of the flights next time.

Google
Still one of my favourite coffee shops in Melbourne. Wide selection of high quality beans, espresso, filter, cold drip and nitro options, with attentive service and a great setting. Recommends for black coffee lovers and those wanting to treat themselves to a high quality cup.

Yelp
Traveling to Australia was a learning experience. I learned that drop bears aren't real, avocados are unbelievably expensive, and that United Airlines won't get you home on time. But the one of the biggest lessons I learned was that Australia's coffee game is on a whole. 'nother. level. Regardless of where I went to eat or just chill, the establishment would have a ~$6000 espresso machine ready to go. Aunty Peg's, however, was the only place that I saw espresso machines without steam wands. My cousin, Jeremy, told me that they specialize in coffee in it's purest form, and thus, would never need steam wands (since they're never steaming milk). Jeremy and I are both fond of filter coffee, so we both decided to get a flight of V60s. This was a terrible idea. We didn't realized that that meant we would both have to drink ~800 mL of coffee each. Caffeine doesn't really do anything to me, but Jeremy was starting to get jittery by the end of the flight. If you're coming here with someone else, share the flight. However, if you're getting a flight of espresso, then yeah, it would make perfect sense to have your own. The flight included three different types of coffee each processed a different way. We tried a single origin, a honey processed single origin, and the gesha. I wish they offered the honey processed coffee for purchase, because that one was my favorite. It was so smooth and tasted like mangoes. The gesha reminded me of an Earl Grey tea, which was a weird since it's, you know, coffee. Regardless, all three of the coffees were delicious. The staff at Aunty Peg's was great too. The barista was laser focused while making the drinks. Once he finished making our flight, he was super chill and fun to talk to. I had a great time here. Everything about Aunty Peg's is what I want to see more of in Oklahoma city. I'm especially glad that I bought some coffee to take home. Try the Humbler, it tastes fantastic!

Yelp
I found myself at Aunty Pegs on a sunny Sunday, when in search of a place to show off Melbourne's coffee culture. (Aunty Pegs is the roaster for Pope Joan.) The venue did not disappoint. Our mustached coffee server was excellent - chatty and informative without being overbearing. We were also given a quick brief about the set-up, as it was our first time there. The coffee is served black, which was perfect for us. But I imagine they've had a more then a few people come through the doors desiring lattes. It turned out to be a great place to pull up a seat at the bar and have a chat. Considering the holy allegiance to the church of brunch in Melbourne, Aunty Pegs was happily uncrowded. (But there were still enough people passing though to keep things lively.) The menu features a small rotating list, with tasting flights available. When we visited there were three coffees from Honduras plus a cold brew nitro on tap. I loved the beer-like quality from the nitro tap, but my coffee expert companion thought the quality would have been better sans nitro tap. The spacious venue also sells a variety quality coffee wares to stock your kitchen.

Yelp
The Proud Mary family keeps on delivering, with Aunty Peg's the latest in the Melbourne speciality coffee scene. Many months in the making, the rumour mill has been rife with what was going on at their Collingwood site. Finally it is open, presenting itself in the form of a roastery, cafe, shop, warehouse and training centre. From the moment of walking in the front door the warehouse nature of the venue is apparent with large open spaces. Located directly in front of the door is the front counter with a delicious selection of pastries and cakes, freshly baked upstairs. Next to the counter are the large, ornate, dresser-style shop shelves with a vast array of brewing equipment, beans, merchandise and books for sale. The coffee bar is the centrepiece with a sweeping array of custom single group heads, grinders, filter brewing equipment and what appear to be beer taps. But they're not beer taps in the sense that they pour beer. Pioneering a new technique of cold brew coffee, a local Geelong-based brewery has been enlisted to brew coffee in cold water which is then kegged and poured on tap with the help of some nitrogen. Served in a beer glass to complete the experience, it almost similar to Guinness in body. A delicious apple and raspberry tea cake matched surprisingly well. It should also be noted that this is a black coffee-only cafe, there is no milk available. This has been done to better highlight the qualities of the many coffee beans on offer. Next to the bar are a number of benches with demo brewing equipment for prospective customers to try out with an endless supply of beans. The stars of the show, the roasting machines, are visible further back in the warehouse. It is clear that Aunty Peg's is all about bringing quality coffee and its origins and various brewing techniques closer to the general public. A must visit for anyone interested more in coffee or just to taste some good coffee and tasty cakes and pastries. But above all else, visit for the cold brew.

Yelp
Melbourne is bursting with quality coffee roasters, but Proud Mary has always been up there as one of the best in the business. Their filter bar at the flagship cafe has always done a lot of damage to my hip pocket because they serve it so beautifully and I can't say no. Now their roastery has relocated nearby and opened a 'cellar door' to experience their magnificent beans as they intended. Black. So if milk is your vice, head on over to Proud Mary on Oxford Street. Coffee lovers, beeline here immediately to get a choice of crazy-good coffees available in espresso or filter. There's also cold brew on tap. Owner Nolan is so passionate about his craft. I've often seen him at his other venues, excitedly explaining the intricacies of particular coffees and the farms where they get them from. You'll get that enthusiasm in spades here. We sat at the brew bar and were served two filters from Nolan, detailing the relationships they have with the farmers and story of the coffees. If you're a geek like I am, you'll be able to ask anything you've ever wanted to know about coffee here. As it's located at the roastery, you can take home any beans available (including the geishas mmmmm *drool*...this is why I can't leave here without spending all my cash). They are baking their own pastries upstairs with promise of donuts and croissants coming soon to appease the carb lovers of Melbourne. If you consider yourself a coffee lover, I highly recommend you check this place out. Especially if you don't normally drink black coffee. Just give it a go. If you really love coffee, there's no way you could be disappointed here.

Yelp
Pull up a chair and hang out at the bar listening to the awesome vinyl collection. It's not negronis and beers you'll be drinking here though, but rather coffee. Black, specialty, coffee. The environment is chilled out, but don't come here expecting to be here for hours. While it's relaxed, there's no food on offer and there's only so much caffeine you can drink right? If you want to make coffee at home, you'll also be able to buy your beans and equipment here.

Yelp
This place is for all the lovers of coffee. Each cup is delicately made from the talented baristas behind the neat coffee bar, which is worth checking out in its own right. I have been many times now, and I can confidently say you very rarely get anything less than an amazing coffee. Beware though - the idea of Aunty Peg's is to showcase the intricacies of the noble coffee bean, so those looking for a latte will be disappointed, only black coffees are available. There are always three specially sourced single origins available, either as espresso or filter. Despite being a self professed coffee snob, anyone who is unfamiliar with milk-less coffee will be pleasantly surprised. As a special treat there is also the cold brew available (48-hour cold-brew nitrogen charged coffee), which is to be tasted to believed.

Yelp
I love Proud Mary. Some of the best coffee and superb food I've had. I was excited by this concept to open a pure brew bar for coffee education and appreciation. The fitout is fantastic. Huge open bar, built in group heads, bar taps. Roaster pumping out coffee in the back, huge retail section that gives plenty of room to guide customers. My biggest problem with this place and the reason I'm not a regular, the staff. Out of the 4 times I've been here, the coffee has been average 3 times. No care is given to that special quality of service. No explanation or information of the coffee I'm getting except what's on the menu, just dump and run. It's a place every coffee enthusiast needs to visit because it's an amazing and exciting concept.

Yelp
Amazing expertise when it comes to exotic coffee, unreal taste and the pastries are delicious.
