Aurelio’s Pizza Review - Wrigleyville - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Aurelio’s is a South Side pizza chain that’s been around since 1959. The specialty here is tavern-style thin crust pizza (the kind that’s cut into little squares), and it’s greasy in a good way, and great to eat with beer. The old-school-pizza-parlor-style space is perfect for large groups, so grab some friends, order a few pitchers, and start arguing over those weird middle pieces." - Adrian Kane

Google
This was our first time ordering takeout from the Downers Grove Location, The pizza was terrible. The pizza was burnt, and I was told an hour before the pizza was ready, I got there 25 minutes early and the pizza was in the warmer already. When I received the pizza it was ice cold. I DO NOT Recommend this place to eat. If possible go to the VillaPark location.

Google
Aurelio’s used to be a favorite. I was confused by the poor reviews as of late, but sadly they are true. Very simple pizza order incorrect as you could see, there are no peppers on the meat pizza. Literally the worst wings we’ve ever seen in our life and the cheese was already hard when we brought it home; the sauce is good, & the crust decent, but not a good pizza experience at all. Also $86 for two pizzas, 9 wings, & a 2 Liter Pepsi.

Google
We ordered pizza on 4/20 and after reheating and biting into leftovers, noticed there was a staple in the pizza. Never again will we eat here.

Google
Aurelio’s has been my go to for two decades across multiple locations. Then I stop in here for lunch, watch two teenage girls walk into the back, loudly discussing how they work at a different location and they’re not on shift and thanks for letting us make our own pizza. Then while in the back loudly talking about how omg I forgot this location doesn’t let you guys wear gloves, it feels so unsanitary. Yes, it is unsanitary. And I’ve worked in restaurant management a long time. Those kinds of issues with standards roll downhill, always. I also know the price of gloves for a business their size. If they’re cutting such a massive corner to save so little, what else do they not care about? What an absolute shame.

Google
I’ve eaten at Aurelio’s multiple times , this location 2-3x. Yesterday I got home, opened the box and knew I was gonna regret it .that pizza was rough. , couldn’t even eat it, ended up getting Sarpinos cause it was late. What I don’t understand is you guys see the complaints and obviously do nothing . Don’t blame the kids cause if you don’t care, why the hell should they? The kids that are usually working are friendly and helpful so I’m guessing it’s your lack of mgmt and training. You need to change something cause that food is awful. End of rant , do better

Google
The great Aurelios pizza now tastes like an elementary school pizza day offering. The sausage pizza we received by delivery was salty and the cheese chewey....not a quality cheese. The sauce, luckily, was the Aurelios sauce we enjoy. The sausage was fine. This location needs to return to get some help from corporate.

Google
Wow! One of the worst pizzas i have ever eaten! It shouldn't be called pizza as it is just cardboard crust with no chew, covered over with red sauce and buried under cheese! Then they decide to put some type of herbs over the top of the cheese! Way over-priced too! A complete fail!

Dixon Myehan

Google
This place used to be great, one of my favorite in the area. The past few years it has just gone down hill more and more. The KIDS working there have no idea what customer service, or a properly made pizza is. Multiple times I've had to call 3-4 times to get my order taken, and when it is finally being taken you can tell the person on the other end of the line is inconvenienced. We got it last night, the crust was almost an inch thick in some places, and they used wayyy too much sauce. It's sad to see one of my favorite places become so bad, but take your money elsewhere. Fast Eddie's, zazzos, dough daddies, and Kim's uncle are far better options for your money.

James M.

Yelp
The "sausage" pizza was terrible!!! When I picked up the pizza, 5 minutes ahead of time they said it would be ready, it was lukewarm and dry. The pizza probably had $1.00 worth of sausage on it. NEVER EVER go there again.

Yelp
As always, Aurelio's hits the spot. Ordered a couple 18" (fiesta) pizzas on a Monday evening. Quick service. Ready in 30 min. Probably could've used an extra few minutes in the oven for my taste, but still great product. I've been to many locations over the years but never downers grove. Surprised to see triangle cut pie at front of kitchen for slices to go but I guess it tastes the same as square cut, or does it? Might have to swing thru again to give that a shot.

Yelp
My favorite pizza! But it's right next door to the theater and I will usually grab a slice and then get my popcorn and a drink and watch a movie!

Yelp
Ordered a small meatball pizza online. I came late and it was waiting for me. It was exactly what I would expect from an Aurelio's pizza. Crispy edges. Heavy sauce. Tasty cheese blend. I don't come often because it's so good, I completely overeat. This particular location is very tiny. Hardly any room to eat in. They did have 4 outdoor tables. This location sells slices. Always love the pizza. The apps are real good but I didn't get any this time.

Nick G.

Yelp
Tried to see if they'd improved after 2 months.. I ordered 1 thin & 1 thick pizza. Both were undercooked.. So much so, both my kids threw out their thick pizza because it wasn't edible.. and we are a Pizza loving Family. Time and time again, they continue to disappoint.

Jacob S.

Yelp
I love this place it's amazing but how can y'all not take any orders before you close even tho your short staffed I get that but I just wanted a pizza bruh do better
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
Service (both dine-in and delivery) is good. No complaints necessarily about the pizza, but hard to distinguish it from other pizza places nearby

Charlie G.

Yelp
Pizza is vary greasy and the cheese sticks are hollow serivice is not good at all but they did fix the cheese stick situation but over all it was overpriced and was not worth it

Bryce M.

Yelp
Super disappointing. This used to be the only pizza place we would order from but the every time we order now the order is messed up or incomplete and are always left waiting. Today waited 45 min past the scheduled pickup time

Yelp
The worse delivery service I've ever experienced ! staying at the Westin and order pizza they say an hour which is fine but they deliver the pizza and I open it and it looked like someone dropped it five times over pizza folded over itself and everything.... but wait it gets worse they also forgot the mozzarella sticks ! But wait gets worse I call and they so oh ok we will remake it and bring the stuff be there in thirty minutes we'll an hour passes and still no pizza ! I call and this lady goes oh they said you were picking it up ! Ummm no I'm not they said they will be here in thirty minutes .... So needless to say she says well we're closing and I can't get it there ! So now sitting in the hotel with not all my food and a half of pizza folded over itself ! Worse experience ever !!! Never going back ! They refunded my money but doesn't fill my stomach !

Yelp
I specifically ordered crispy, not sloppy pizza, slightly brown all over. I got spongy pizza that felt like I was eating a bread with pizza toppings on it I called to complain I said I don't mean to complain, but can you read back my order and they read back my order which said exactly what I said crispy pizza I do not want it soggy in the middle and it was just that all over it was sloppy. The entire pizza was squishy. I told the girl my family owns a restaurant in Clarendon Hills and when anybody comes into the restaurant and they don't like what they get we replace it or pay for the meal she said I'll let my manager know that and hung up. It didn't taste anything like the Aurilios in Oak Brook Terrace/ Villa Park ( ALWAYS AMAZING) and I would never order from there again. I bought a fiesta pizza with sausage, onion, black olives, and green pepper. And I bought my son a small sausage pizza and it cost me 65 bucks for a underwhelming meal ...3/4 of the pizza is in a container in refrigerator and it'll be thrown out in a couple days. You all need to do something about your product...The guy that delivered it was great it is his job is to deliver the pizza and it got delivered. But your pizza was TRASH...I would've done better going to Domino's. Thanks for ripping me off.

Pete S.

Yelp
They charged my card twice and then claimed they didn't receive payment. The liars stole my money and didn't even give me the food.

Yelp
The wings are great, the thin crust is good, the thick crust is better, and the stuffed is best. If you don't care for some of the other "big" brands in Chicago, try Aurelio's.

D D.

Yelp
We've been enjoying the tasty full of ingredients from Aurelio's Pizza. La Grange-Aurelio's Pizza is quite consistent with how they make the superb-quality pizza that we always crave for. On the other-hand, we hope that the Downers Grove-Aurelio's Pizza should do the same. Maybe you guys from Downers Grove see/try/taste how the La Grange Aurelio's is made. A strong suggestion from your loyal customer, please be consistent with how you make an Aurelio's pizza. Sad to say, it's been disappointing lately from the Downers Grove-Aurelio's Pizza, the pizza that we love is quite not as expected, "sub-standard" in the amount of ingredients and over-all quality, it seems that some young individual who is still learning made the pizzas we had recently without regard to the great-standards of Aurelio's Pizza. Please stick to your high-quality standard and carefully / thoroughly make an honest-to-goodness--Aurelio's pizza. Thank you.

Yelp
Love stopping by for a slice and a soda before the movies next door, or if I am passing and hungry. It's a tiny seating area for 12 or so people, but it's perfect for devouring a slice. Pizza is always good, even off the rotating pizza heater thing for slices.

Yelp
Great thin crust pizza. I haven't had much thin crust in my visits to Chicago and Aurelio's was an excellent combination of a crispy edge but still a soft doughy bottom. The toppings were excellent and I really enjoyed the way the green peppers were roasted with the pizza (most pizza places have clearly undercooked vegetables). Definitely a different experience from thick Chicago style pizza that most of us non Chicago natives think of- but still very tasty.

Yelp
I love this pizza, always have since I was younger. Can't beat the sauce. Maybe a little pricy, but I think it's worth it. Also very nice that you can buy it by the slice.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place after Peet's coffee which is across the train station. We wanted to try some pizza because why not?? We ordered 2 slices and went outside to eat. It was such a beautiful day too! The lady quickly gave us our 2 slices for $5.50 total - Pretty good! The pizza was greasy but tasted really good! No sogginess what so ever, a nice crunchy crust, pepperoni everywhere on that pizza and the cheese and sauce ratio was perfect. Although a similar taste to Peter Pipers if you have eaten there before but better. I would definitely come here again if I'm wandering in that area again!!

jen s.

Yelp
Super annoyed. Everything is so expensive now that it's not hard to just expect to get what you pay for. Taco pizza is a lot of money. Comes with sour cream and salsa. It wasn't in our bag. Ranch comes with our toasted ravioli and wasn't in the bag. We purposely asked and said is everything in here? The response: yep. Don't charge so much if you can't even give what's included. Over it.

Yelp
Aurelio's is one of the best Chicagoland pizzas you can get! If you haven't tried you must! They do not do deep dish only thin crust pizza which is fine because that's what they are known for! It is located in Downtown Downers Grove near the Metra tracks next to the Tivoli Movie Theatre. Great location to grab a pizza after work or before a movie! The eat in area is very small with only two tables, perfect for a family or a couple friends wanting to grab a bite. The staff is friendly and hard working. Aurelio's uses great ingredients and the crust has excellent flavor. I always make sure to stop and get a pizza everytime I'm in town! The owner is great and stays involved in the community as well.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
This is a dependable pizza place with consistently good pizza and good service. The pizza is also made close to the estimated time of delivery or pick up.
google avatar

S. B.

Yelp
I talked to Joe in Frankfort told him the sauce in downers wasn't his. He said he sells the ingredients to these franchises And he is watching some franchises because there aren't ordering enough of certain ingredients. And that he believes some stores are cutting his sauce mix w plain tomato sauce Making it taste (crappy) NOT LIKE HIS THEY BETTER GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER BEFORE THEY LOSE THE FRANCHISE

Yelp
I JUST LOVE AURELIO'S!! I have been eating at different locations since I was a young teen. Tinley Park, Frankfort, Woodridge, Downers, Chicago you get my point. :) All of the locations are consistent on their pizzas and service. I just love the sauce, crust everything about them. Keep in mind the one located next door to one of my FAVORITE theaters the Tivoli has maybe two small tables. It is more of a take out location. When I do eat pizza I usually go for the thin crust and the thin crust at Aurelio's is the best! They have good pasta dishes as well. They now give you a card for your key chain (like everywhere these days-lol) that gives you reward points. I get email alerts for discounts, coupons etc. I will continue to support and be a fan of them as long as they are around. :) Cheers!

Yelp
Aurielo's is one fine establishment! In the ever crowded Chicago pizza market, Aurielo's has made a footprint and name for itself with massive expansion of its delicious thin crust pizza. Home to the deep dish pizza, many Chicagoans prefer a slice of two of deep dish over thin crust, but I think the thin vs deep dish is a close debate. For me, I always prefer a thin crust pizza or Sicilian pan style. Thus, I always enjoy finding a quality new option for thin crust. Aurelio's definitely delivered one of the BEST thin crusts in Chicago that I have ever tried. Why is it so good? A couple of key contributions and differentiators to this thin crust are the homemade pizza sauce and also the caramelized cheese on the bottom of the crust. The caramelized cheese might go unnoticed to the causal diner, but not past my taste buds. The extra crunch of caramelized cheese was a winning bite. I easily could have eaten a whole pizza to myself, but I was at work and was required to share this pizza with my co-workers. Next time, it is all mine!! Shoutout to the BEST managers who introduced me to Aurelio's! I would not have written this Yelp review if it was not for their fine taste in local Chicago Za!! There is no debate whether I could have chosen to be off work laying out on this 90 degree sunny Friday in Chicago or at work crushing pizza with my friends and colleagues. The choice is not close as pizza at work is a no brainer choice. It is important to do what you enjoy on a daily basis, but always remember to eat what you enjoy too. My comfort food of choice is a thin crust pizza pie.

Yelp
I have loved Aurelios for as long as I can remember. Classic spot for a solid slice of pizza. This place is a local favorite for a reason.
google avatar

Yelp
Hard to find a good pizza place in Lombard...Discovered Aurelios over the summer....Not bad... Two pizza slices and a can of Soda $4.99! Can't beat that!!! The sauce is very good, but the meats may need a bit more seasoning.
google avatar

Lary S.

Yelp
Great pizza. The sauce and cheese are truly what makes it. Been ordering here for years. Only one small complaint: their prices are a bit high and delivery time can be long. But other than that, the pizza tastes amazing every time

Yelp
We recently moved here and we're so excited to try this new place. There was only one customer and five or six people behind the counter a cute little place that reminded me of a simpler time. I ordered a piece of cheese pizza and the kid behind the counter check a piece of pizza out from a glass warmer and put it on a plate. When I bent into the pizza, it was so old that the cheese on top had turned into a crust and actually crunched what I put into it. Inside the pizza was totally cold. My boyfriend asked him to please heat up the pizza for me and they returned it a few minutes later boiling hot and again, so old that the cheese was like a varnish on top hard as a rock. It was not edible. I could not believe that out of the five people in the back not one person even looked up after serving a piece of pizza that should've been thrown away hours ago. I told the only guy behind the counter that seem to care that the PizzA was not Edible and explained why. I explained that we had just moved to the area and I would have been so excited about trying this place. I left the pizza on the counter and I will never ever ever go into this place again. These people are rapidly ruining what was probably a great little pizzeria. You keep your petrified slice that you should never have served anyone but a goat and I'll keep the $500 I might have spent there this year if your pizza had been any good.

Yelp
I grew up in Chicago suburbs and Aurelio's was always one of my favorites. I was in town for a meeting so I ordered delivery. The girl who took my order was friendly and had a great attitude. They brought it to my hotel, about 45-60 minutes from when I ordered. Pizza was warm and exactly what I ordered! Delicious!
google avatar

Mollie G.

Yelp
I ordered pizza and salad for few hundred people today! They rocked it out! Everything was hot and salad was fresh! Thank you so much for making our National Pizza Party Day go down perfectly!
google avatar

AMANDA C.

Yelp
1. only way to order online is through their app. The app SUCKS. Tried for 20 minutes to try to order ended up having to call in the order. 2. I was told an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. Long wait, but it's Saturday night. I had to repeat everything twice. After an hour and 20 minutes I call and I am told it's going to be another 40 minutes. Pizza hasn't even left the restaurant. Then she proceeds to complain they had 100 orders in the last hour. Not my problem. 2 hours for pizza delivery, I wouldn't have wasted my time waiting with hungry kids.
google avatar

Deval D.

Yelp
Went here for a quick bite to eat - 2 slices and a coke for $6.25. Unfortunately, the pizza looked like it had been there all day. I asked for some new slices, as did the gentleman behind me, and they said no - we have 5 slices of pepperoni on the case. Of course, the 5 slices were on 4 different shelves, which meant they were as old as they looked. So I opted for cheese, which looked better but still tasted old and stale. Normally I like Aurelio's, but this location is not very good. They need to freshen their inventory periodically - once a day would be an improvement.

Yelp
A year and a half into living in Downers Grove and I'm still astounded by the fact that I can get more than "fast food pizza" delivered to my front door. That's pretty damn amazing if you ask me, and so is Aurelio's pizza. Generally it takes about 50 minutes from my call to the arrival of a fresh, steaming hot pie covered in delicious melty cheese and a crust with cooked on deliciousness. Aurelio's is definitely my favorite pizza from the taste to the people who work there to the friendly delivery drivers. I haven't got a single complaint.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Stopped by with my son to pick up a couple of slices of pizza. Stood around for a long time while being ignored by staff. Finally got frustrated and left with empty stomachs. Super disappointed since we live right by this location and come here often. The food is good, but the staff is usually really young and unprofessional.
google avatar

Al L.

Yelp
Thin crust cheese pizza is bomb! So good! Try getting a plain cheese from Lou's or Giordonos. You will be disappointed. Aurellio's has the basics down. Super thin and crunchy crust, great sauce and a good mix of cheese. Definatly get take out though. Ensures the pizza was made fresh. I can't say the same thing about the single slices for sale. Those are a mile apart from their take out pizza.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
I feel bad giving a one star since its a DG staple and their thin crust is pretty good for those who like a sweeter sauce. I just cant give over a one star for how nasty their stuffed is. Seriously....did someone lose the recipe?!? Super soggy, waaaaay too much sauce, so gross. No cohesiveness at all...tasted like a bowl of spaghetti with smashed up bread. Please take this off the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
I last had Aurelio's pizza 25 years ago when I lived in Downers Grove. Since I moved away, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. So, after years of thinking, "I need to go back there when I'm visiting," I finally did. I can't believe how closely the pizza I just had matches the ones in my memory. (How often does that happen?!) I had a 10" pepperoni, and it was delicious. The owner's brother told me that, in the last 25 years, only the sauce had changed; they went from on-site homemade to a chain-wide sauce. Although the "new" sauce is not quite as distinctive as before, it seems very close. Even better: It's the crust I've been yearning for, and this pie did not disappoint. Nostalgia aside, this is simply really good pizza -- and it doesn't taste like every other pizza you've eaten. The only downside -- at least to this specific location -- is that delivery or carry out is pretty much the only option here; there are just two tables on-site, with total seating for eight (plus however many could cram onto a windowseat/banquette). Note: After reading some reviews here -- and seeing things for myself -- I will say that "pizza by the slice" is NOT the way to sample Aurelio's best work. On my visit -- late afternoon on a Sunday -- these slices looked warmed over, dried out, and very unappetizing. Don't be swayed by convenience; order a small, personal pizza (if you don't want much), grab a soda from the cooler, have a seat, and wait for them to make you a fresh pie. Better: Order a larger size and have the cold leftovers the next day.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
They have traditional Chicago style pizza. Try the pepperoni pizza. Very good. Also try the cobb salad. Fresh and large portions.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Coworker needed some pizzas for a work lunch, so he sent us here - - naturally wanted something better than just a "chain" pizza for the clients. This location opened up at 11, so we only had to wait a minute or two and then went inside to order. Small location inside w a few tables, but i liked that they already had some slices to go available right at opening. We ordered probably like 9 pizzas or so and then just waited inside. But I couldn't wait, so naturally got a slice right away - - i think it was sausage & cheese. Very good! The crust was perfect... not too thick, nor thin. And...if you order pizza for take out there's a cute little Aurelio's pizza shield you can punch out. (or not)
google avatar

R C.

Yelp
Very consistent, and good quality pizza. In Chicago, these are the minimum requirements for consideration. I prefer their sauce, which is sweet and light with a nice crisp crust. Disclaimer; I worked at Giordano's for 4 years and prefer the Aurelio's thin or the Giordano's stuffed to other Chicago Pizza's. And BTW, how does Pizza Hut stay in business here anyway?
google avatar

Kymberly J.

Yelp
When you're broke you can beat two slices and a can of pop for five bucks! They even had veggie slices...who does that? Awesomeness! Great crust - not too thick and not too thin. Fresh, not canned, veggies and flavor cheese and sauce. Just plain really good pizza!
google avatar

Yelp
Aurelios in Downers Grove is hands down the best pizza around! The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because of a recent interaction with a delivery woman. We used to order Aurelios almost weekly, but recently moved to Lisle. We did call and order a few times in Lisle always asking if they'd be willing to deliver and always got confirmation that they would. The most recent time, we will must've forgotten to ask because the delivery woman told us to stop ordering from Downers Grove because she didn't want to drive that far. She recommended we use Woodridge instead. Our new place can't be more than 1.5 mills from our Downers Grove apartment, so I was really put off by her attitude. Really unfortunate, but we moved, so we'll have to do without Aurelios.
google avatar

Janet A.

Yelp
Incredibly disappointed with this location. I order from here all the time, never had a problem until tonight. I realize it's Christmas Eve, that's why I called at close to 6 and asked how late they were open until. The guy I spoke with said they were taking orders until 6:30 and I said I would call back because I had to ask everyone what size and what toppings everyone wanted. I called back less than 20 minutes later, about 6:20, and the same guy picked up and said they stopped taking orders at 6:15!!! Wtf seriously! And when I told him I just spoke to him and he told me 6:30, he had absolutely no sympathy, no empathy, didn't give a sh*t that he gave me inaccurate information! Also why the hell are they only taking orders until 6 whatever when on their website it says specifically today they are open until 11 pm!

Yelp
Aurelio's is a downtown Downers Grove institution with a super convenient location next to the Tivoli Theater and Downers Grove train station. I grew up in Downers Grove, so when I come home to visit my parents - we alternate between Aurelio's (the thin crust), Angelo's (the thin crust, on the south side of the tracks), Girodano's (the stuffed pizza), and Lou Malnati's (deep dish). You'll like Aurelio's thin crust pizza if you like a crispy cracker-like crust and a generous amount of cheese, toppings and italian spices (oregano?) on top. Very flavorful pizza. The cheese is "just melted" (I prefer my cheese to be golden bubbly) which creates sort of a mushy top. The pizza tastes great reheated the next day in a pan (but in the microwave, the crust disappears and it's all squishy like you're eating mouthfuls of cheese). Go ahead, order a pizza, and pick it up on your way through downtown. Not the cheapest, not the best pizza, but certainly tasty.

Yelp
We had pasta with alfredo sauce, Cesar salad, and the original sandwich. The original sandwich was stuffed like a hot dog with salami, ham, and their special beef slices. The sandwich was very dry, and unfortunately had little to no taste compared with the average deli meat obtained from the grocery store. Bread was also soggy from heat of condensation as well as juices from meat. The salad was super salty, I guess from the parma cheese, but the over all taste was your typical caesar salad. It should be pointed out that this place is not meant to be for sit downs, as we were served plastic utensils, and paper plates. If you do come here stick to the pizza. Otherwise avoid the rest of the menu.

Iloveme T.

Yelp
The pizza always taste like it was drenched in salt and was dry. I've eaten there around 4-5 times when I first moved to DG. The pizza never got any better.

Yelp
This year the only thing I asked for on my birthday was an Aurelio's Super Six pizza. Best. Birthday. Ever.

Yelp
I ordered thru grubhub, and the menu was very well organized. My order did not arrive on time. When I inquired thru grubhub, I was surprised to receive a call from the manager of the pizzeria. She explained that an issue had come up with the driver who had my order. She offered me several options. I chose to have my order remade and delivered. She even upsized my pizza. I understand things aren't always perfect at a restaurant, especially ones offering delivery. The fact that they were gracious enough to accommodate me and make up for their mistake makes this an eatery I will order from again. I will update with a review of my order after I've eaten. Well done Aurelio's!

We stopped in to the pick up area before a movie at the Tivoli. We had never been here before so called ahead because we wanted to make sure they sold by the slice at dinnertime. It was a Friday night and yet the pizza looked like it had been sitting there for a week. The person behind the counter took it out with her hands even though she was running the cash register. The pizza was barely warm and looked kind of like 7-11 food! There were two tables that were full, and so we ended up sitting on a bench in the breezeway eating on our lap. They gave us paper plates from the grocery store. Weird experience. Disappointing!
