Yelp
Auspicious Baking Company (ABC) is one of my happy places in Savannah and when we move away in a couple of months, I will most likely cry for months and suffer from ABC withdrawal for years to come and I'm not even exaggerating. If you know my love of baked goods, you will understand my upcoming heartache if you've had any of ABC's delights.
Pre-COVID-19 pandemic, their OG location was down the street at this quaint little shop that had just enough room for a single file line and their showcase of delicious goodies. There was something about the feeling of excitement and anticipation the night before my planned visit, showing up to a busy parking lot and standing in line with other ABC fans just waiting to get inside for our turns to take a peek at what ABC made in the wee hours of that morning. ABC had plans for expansion and opened this second location here, but due to the pandemic, they had to make some tough decisions and ultimately, decided to close the doors of the OG location. I'm missing the small shop feel, but bigger location means, more room to make the goodies, more people to make them and more love of ABC to go around. Win win for all!
- Parking -
Center lot.
- Service -
ABC is owned and operated by truly wonderful people, a couple, Katie and Mark, masters at their craft. You will often see them baking or helping out at the front, in the middle of the action. The owners hire kind and helpful people like themselves. Like attracts like. Katie and Mark are the kind of people who take the time to express their gratitude for your time and business.
- The Goods -
You can get your hands on their goodies 2 ways: walk-in or preorder online the night before (they announce the ordering window on Instagram) to be picked up starting at 9am the following morning. What I usually do is place my order online to lock in the items I definitely don't want to miss out on and when I go to pick up my order, I'll end up ordering other things that catches my eye! I know it defeats the purpose of ordering, but I can't help it and it reduces the time I would normally stand there trying to decide LOL.
My go-to items are croissants and they deserve their own special mention. I've had almost every croissant item, chocolate, ham & cheese and croissant loaves, with the exception of the Everything Croissant with cream cheese. I'm just a sweet gal ;) They've even made a double chocolate croissant in the past. These are the real deal! They fold that buttery dough, over and over and over to give you ALL the layers. Outside of Paris, their croissant has been one of the best in my book!
Other faves and go-to items are scones, GG Grandma Schmidt's Brownies, Cinnamon Rolls, their cupcakes (Chocolate or Vanilla) and their cookies. I've also had their pop tarts and Monkey Bread. You can't go wrong. They have a variety of breads, savory items and make things like Hummus, Babaganoush and salads. Leopold's Ice Cream is available for purchase there as well! They have vegan options as well!
- Helpful tips -
*They are open for retail hours only for 3 days out of the week (Fri, Sat & Sun), so plan accordingly, especially if you're visiting. They are hard at work the rest of the week supplying local restaurants, cafes and shops. If you simply cannot wait for the end of the week, visit any of the local businesses listed on their website that serve their items. It's a long list. Their products are found in all different forms, from pastries, to breads for sandwiches or even pizza dough!
*I do believe they still offer a military discount, both in-store and online, so just ask. Never expected, but always appreciated!
- COVID-19 Observations -
*All staff members are wearing masks
*Plexiglass has been installed to protect the precious goods
*As I mentioned, take advantage of the online preorder! It's simple and you're in and out in a jiffy (unless you're me and can't resist).
ABC is not to be missed!
