7 Must-Try Sandwiches for Your Next Trip to Portugal

"An Alentejo restaurant that elevates the simple breakfast Tosta Mista into a chef-driven creation — their ‘Oss-ta Tosta’ swaps standard bread for crunchy sourdough and is stuffed with cured São Jorge cheese, sobrassada and house orchard pickles for a rich, inventive take on ham-and-cheese on toast." - Stacey Leasca

Dining at austa was exceptional - full of rich flavors, beautifully presented, and clearly made with great care and creativity. Every course was a highlight. What truly set the experience apart, though, was the warm and attentive service. The team made us feel genuinely welcome, like we were guests in their home. It’s rare to find a place where both the cuisine and the atmosphere are this special. Thank you!

A unique dining experience in The Algarve is the only way to describe the exquisite, delicate food we were served by staff that were very attentive , knowledgeable of their food and a restaurant nestled in a beautiful garden . Worthy of a Michelin recommendation. Thank you to the whole staff for a memorable evening. No need to go through all the details , everything on the menu was carefully prepared and was very yummy! Enjoy the pics!

A Google find, and such a satisfying and most unique dining experience at Austa! They confirmed the reservation via Whatsapp and talking to a real person was so refreshing! They invited us to come in early to enjoy a walk thru their vast Zen garden. From homegrown tomatoes and sunflowers to the beautiful landscape with sculptures and giant pots, the garden at sunset is impressive! The placement of tables is thoughtful! You can't hear a person talking next to you, so privacy is respected. Then introduction to the restaurant concept, food preparation, using the pottery and ceramics from local Portuguese artisans. Everything we ordered from the menu was like a piece of art, and tasted divine. Excellent service. Very impressive and highly recommended for anyone who wants to dine in style. I appreciated every single detail! Thank you, Austa team! Keep rocking!

Austa is truly special. Before having a morsel of food we had a beautiful, calming walk around the immaculate garden, were welcomed in the warmest way by (an angel) Emma and were popped on a perfect table to enjoy the evening and watch the sunset over the trees. Then we inhaled the most delicious grapefruit mirror margarita we've ever drunk - my saliva glands are squeaking thinking about it now! I could have had 10. Do not miss these. Then the food was just one breathtaking morsel after another. The attention to detail is so inspiring - real artistry. We were blown away by the lamb croquette's, the hokkaido pumpkin, a tomato salad I could have every day, a 3 year old oyster which was so delicate with magic, sharp flavours, perfectly cooked Forkbeard from Sagres - real melt in the mouth fish - beef that was, and I'll die on my sword, the best I've ever had. Then, just as we thought we couldn't eat anymore, we had NO TROUBLE devouring a banana, toffee, ice cream pudding thing and a panacotta with electric cherries and some delightful icy business on top. They really have nailed everything. The atmosphere, the relationship to the food and area, the loooovely, charming servers, the incredible food and wine (I can't remember the bottle we had but David steered us SO true, really listened to what we liked and it was exceptional!) and the architecture (they won the Dezeen award in '24!). Nothing is missing. For such a new venture, it's deeply inspiring to see wonderful people getting it so right. Take a minute to marvel at the recycled SALT furniture inside for gawds sake! If you're in the Algarve, it would be madness to miss this restaurant.

Very beautiful restaurant and love the farm to table concept. The owner was lovely and talked us through how sometimes each table has an entirely different menu as it’s based on what’s available that day. Felt some of the dishes lacked in flavour a touch - although the turbot with leeks was 10/10 my favourite dish.

We had a nice dinner at Austa due to the nice atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant. However, what we ate vs what we paid is outrageous. We paid like 16€ for 2 half slices of tomatoes. Service was nice but I didn’t get my cocktail on time so I didn’t get to enjoy some pre-dinner drinks. They did take it off the bill when I complained. Overall, the food was fine but not groundbreaking, especially for that price.

What a thoroughly enjoyable start to the day at this new cafe & restaurant. The location, display, atmosphere was bright & airy whilst the menu was interesting & quirky. Absolutely delicious food served with a smile, everything we ordered was really special and tasted very good. A very rainy day so outside was closed but sitting inside was delightful, 100% recommend.

Our meal at Austa was nothing short of exceptional. The cocktails were multilayered and complex and the wines delicious. We loved that the food was all local with the quality of the ingredients were really allowed to sing on the finished plates. The variety of methods to prepare were wide ranging but not over the top - raw beef for the steak tartar, roasted and ever so slightly charred pumpkin, sous vide and a gentle flash in the pan for the blush pink beef, and dehydrated banana skin (inspired!) for the banana icecream were just some of the delights. This is a team that really knows what they’re doing and it was a joy to be part of their efforts for an evening. We’re not local (Londoners) and will be back without a doubt. Until then Austa will be recommended to any willing to listen. To Emma, David and the team - thank you!
