7 Must-Try Sandwiches for Your Next Trip to Portugal

"An Alentejo restaurant that elevates the simple breakfast Tosta Mista into a chef-driven creation — their ‘Oss-ta Tosta’ swaps standard bread for crunchy sourdough and is stuffed with cured São Jorge cheese, sobrassada and house orchard pickles for a rich, inventive take on ham-and-cheese on toast." - Stacey Leasca

After having an amazing brunch, we decided to come back for dinner. The staff was wonderful and every dish we tried was amazing! I believe their passion is to find the best local ingredients and it shows. From the delicious sourdough bread from Essences (which we later went to purchase a loaf for ourselves) to the olive oil to the tuna from Olhão. I love that they also incorporate items from their own garden as their chard used in the pork dish was so delicious my friend said, “if I could make chard taste this good, I’d eat it every day!”. I especially loved that our server really seemed to share the passion of the restaurant and seemed to take great pride in sharing the dishes with us. I hope to find another restaurant this special in Lisbon which is where we are headed next.

A most pleasant establishment, set in a fine location with a charming atmosphere. The garden is indeed delightful, though I rather doubt it serves as a true source of ingredients for the kitchen, for reasons both practical and evident. The menu is curated with a sense of particularity—an appeal, perhaps, not destined for all tastes—especially given the portions, which are of an exceedingly modest size. The service is commendable and carried out with grace. The meat dishes, I must say, are of excellent quality and most satisfying. The seafood, however, though fresh, presents itself with a simplicity that does not entirely befit a house of such standing—oysters being the noble exception. The wine selection is worthy of praise, though the cocktails, alas, fall short of expectation. Yet, all in all, I remain glad to have made the visit. With the favour of fair weather and every other happy circumstance, the experience proved most agreeable.

We had such a great time at Austa. The place is beautiful, especially outside it feels so natural and well thought out. The staff are unbelievably friendly and really make you feel at home. And the food and wine… just amazing, full of special flavors. Such a unique spot!

Our experience at austa was amazing! Food was super unique and delicious, cocktails and wine list were top notch, and the setting CANNOT be beat. We had so much fun just walking around the gardens! We had the set menu and everything we ate was 10/10. I wish we hadn’t come on our last night so we could go back during the day! They were also incredibly gracious - very quickly responding to my texts asking abt transportation and letting them know we were in traffic. Would highly recommend for any foodies visiting the regions.

Dining at austa was exceptional - full of rich flavors, beautifully presented, and clearly made with great care and creativity. Every course was a highlight. What truly set the experience apart, though, was the warm and attentive service. The team made us feel genuinely welcome, like we were guests in their home. It’s rare to find a place where both the cuisine and the atmosphere are this special. Thank you!

In the airport terminal of Belém in Brazil, returning from a month long excursion in the Amazon, I made my booking at austa waiting to board. It was my first meal back in Europe, and my tastebuds were eagerly awaiting the ingredient quality Portugal can provide. After my 6,900km journey, I arrived directly to austa with my vast suitcase and tattered backpack falling off my broken body. When I say austa gave me the best experience I could have asked for, I mean it, as a grave understatement. Every dish was complex but delicious, service was impeccable and the location is gorgeous. The pumpkin dish and the steak (perhaps due to not having good beef for a very long, but also the cook was absolutely perfect) were extraordinary. One small detail was the caramel of the banana ice cream desert. Rather than using full salted caramel, there was a deep caramel taste with the tiniest glimmer of salt on the edge of the flavour profile, showing their prowess in balance and attention to detail. I have had much worse experiences at places with a Michelin star. I’m waiting for the guide to hurry up and award them.

A unique dining experience in The Algarve is the only way to describe the exquisite, delicate food we were served by staff that were very attentive , knowledgeable of their food and a restaurant nestled in a beautiful garden . Worthy of a Michelin recommendation. Thank you to the whole staff for a memorable evening. No need to go through all the details , everything on the menu was carefully prepared and was very yummy! Enjoy the pics!
