An Aesthete’s Guide to the Algarve | Vogue

"In Almancil, a design-forward, multi-purpose space by Lisbon’s Studio Gameira blends indoor and outdoor dining with an adjacent produce garden, paying homage to the Algarve through details like a striking 12-foot bench made of 230 blocks of ancient rock salt from Loulé. The contrast of aluminum chairs, angular marble-topped tables, and a wooden pergola—crafted with Algarvean artisans—sets the stage for chef David Barata’s seasonal menus honoring farmers and fishermen, from plump four-year-old Ria Formosa oysters with fermented cucumber and buttermilk to juicy carabineiro from Vila Real Santo António. The carefully built wine list leans low-intervention, spotlighting bottles from Portugal and Spain." - Chadner Navarro

7 Must-Try Sandwiches for Your Next Trip to Portugal

"An Alentejo restaurant that elevates the simple breakfast Tosta Mista into a chef-driven creation — their ‘Oss-ta Tosta’ swaps standard bread for crunchy sourdough and is stuffed with cured São Jorge cheese, sobrassada and house orchard pickles for a rich, inventive take on ham-and-cheese on toast." - Stacey Leasca

One of, if not the best, contemporary dining spots we’ve ever been to. The seasonal menu was beautifully thought out, celebrating local producers and bringing the best of the Algarve to the table. Every dish was explained with a smile and prepared with so much care. Everything tasted effortless and perfectly balanced. They had us from the start with the best sourdough and delicious homemade butter, and it only got better from there. I don’t usually eat pork, but this place made me, and honestly, I’d order it again. The interiors are gorgeous, every detail feels intentional. We travel a lot and eat out often, and this place is easily in our top five. We’re coming back in December to try the breakfast menu - no doubt it’ll be mind-blowing. Thank you so much for making our trip to Portugal special!

Austa is an absolute must-visit when traveling the Algarve! This restaurant was honestly the highlight of my five-day solo trip. I really value thoughtfulness, quality ingredients and a warm, welcoming atmosphere when dining out. Austa ticked every single box. When I arrived the staff made me feel genuinely welcome and cared for even though I came alone. The ambiance, the beautiful interior design and the garden that surrounds the restaurant make a very unique experience. Before your reservation you’re even invited to take a walk through the garden (to see where the ingredients come from before they show up on your plate is such a special touch). The food itself was incredible! Full of flavor, beautifully balanced and with combinations you don’t often find elsewhere. You can really taste the quality and care that goes into every dish. + I really loved the music they played there! If you’re in the Algarve book a table! And definitely come back for breakfast!

An unforgettable farm-to-table experience! Everything on the menu (from food to drinks) is locally sourced, with many ingredients coming straight from their own garden. You can even visit the garden before dinner, so it’s worth arriving about 10 minutes early. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do, and the service runs like clockwork. The wine list is varied and perfectly complements the dishes. Every bite tasted fresh and full of flavor. They even send a WhatsApp message before and after your visit to make sure everything went smoothly: such a nice personal touch. Highly recommend, 10/10 ✨

Epic meal, the best of my week long trip in the Algarve and one of the memorable meals of the year. Loved the garden grown produce, carefully sourced small batch local wines, highly innovative cooking and amazing service. Highly recommend.

Had a great dinner at austa. Better than my expectation. Driving into the restaurant is a bit tricky, cause the restaurant is off the main road. Overall great food and service. I ordered the beef tartare, Hokkaido pumpkin, scarlet shrimp, acorn pork and a banana dessert.

The meal at Austa was truly spectacular – food to die for, beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. The setting is stunning, creating the perfect atmosphere for a special evening. Service was attentive, warm, and professional from start to finish. Without question, this was the best meal we’ve had in the Algarve. A must-visit for anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

A most pleasant establishment, set in a fine location with a charming atmosphere. The garden is indeed delightful, though I rather doubt it serves as a true source of ingredients for the kitchen, for reasons both practical and evident. The menu is curated with a sense of particularity—an appeal, perhaps, not destined for all tastes—especially given the portions, which are of an exceedingly modest size. The service is commendable and carried out with grace. The meat dishes, I must say, are of excellent quality and most satisfying. The seafood, however, though fresh, presents itself with a simplicity that does not entirely befit a house of such standing—oysters being the noble exception. The wine selection is worthy of praise, though the cocktails, alas, fall short of expectation. Yet, all in all, I remain glad to have made the visit. With the favour of fair weather and every other happy circumstance, the experience proved most agreeable.

We had such a great time at Austa. The place is beautiful, especially outside it feels so natural and well thought out. The staff are unbelievably friendly and really make you feel at home. And the food and wine… just amazing, full of special flavors. Such a unique spot!
