9 Best Breweries in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"As one of the most recent breweries to make the jump from the cozy confines of the spaces on Industry Way, Austin Street is still drawing Portlanders particularly plugged into the beer scene (though this is Portland, Maine, so that's a substantial group of people), but its spot right next Rising Tide, and just a few blocks from Lone Pine and Oxbow Blending and Bottling, means you'll get some folks out for a brew crawl, too. There will always be a couple of solid versions of "safe" beers—potent IPAs, pale ales, flavorful stouts—on tap. But Austin Street also takes some more interesting swings with tropical fruited sours and smoked beers." - Noah Kaufman

If you can call a taproom chic, this is it. So sleek but still cozy and welcoming. Their fruited selection is outstanding. Huge shoutout to Bethany for fantastic service and lovely conversation🫶🏽

We hosted our wedding welcome party at Austin St and we’re so glad we did! I don’t know who was more obsessed, us or our guests. Their space is beautiful, their beers are great, and their team is awesome. Can’t beat the indoor/outdoor vibes and the bocce ball & fire pits. They were so easy to work with and super queer friendly. Whether you’re thinking of stopping in for a quick drink or thinking of hosting a private event here, just do it! You won’t regret it!

Austin Street Brewery is easily one of the best breweries in Portland, and it’s not hard to see why. Their draft list is always a perfect mix of classic favorites and exciting new releases, making every visit feel both familiar and fresh. Whether you’re in the mood for a crisp pale ale, a juicy IPA, or something experimental, there’s always something worth savoring. During my visit, they were even running a case sale, which felt like hitting the beer lover’s jackpot—great quality and great value all in one stop. The atmosphere at Austin Street is another highlight. You can grab a seat indoors and enjoy the laid-back, friendly vibe, or head outside to the cozy patio, where gas fire pits keep things warm and inviting even on chilly evenings. It’s the perfect spot to unwind with friends or just relax with a pint. I can’t wait to come back and see what they’re pouring next!

Google
Austin Street Brewery is a total gem! From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the fun, laid-back atmosphere. It’s super kid-friendly, with plenty of board games to keep everyone entertained, and the indoor/outdoor setup is perfect no matter the weather. We happened to visit during a pop-up bakery event (delicious!), and it turns out they regularly host awesome events like that, which really adds to the community vibe. There was also a food truck parked out front with great options, making it easy to spend a whole afternoon here. And can we talk about the ferns? They’re huge and lush—and yes, they’re real! It adds such a cool, vibrant touch to the space. Great beer, great people, great vibes. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
Staff super friendly. Prices normal. Locale is fun and indoor or outdoor hanging out. Tons of games and community fun can be had here. Bellafina Procceco is great, dry, not sugary. Obsolete Vernacular is soooo good. DDH patina is a bit watery, although it looks like juice, see pic. The Rally Session-like is fab! Many drink options are in cans to go. See pic. Didn't eat here, but many others are. If we lived here, would return very often.

Nice place. Great brews. Relaxing atmosphere. Walking distance to lots of other breweries

Google
Great spot, this. Good vibes, a wide variety of beers, and loads of outdoor seating. Dog and family friendly.

Google
Great vibe. Love the ferns and beautiful patio ! Had the IPA collab with trillium and wow, a beer highlight of our beer vacation!

Yelp
One of the last breweries we visited while in Portland and we were not disappointed. The brewery is very open, large and has an industrial feel, but a warm atmosphere. The space was warmed by, a variety of plants throughout the space. The ferns are huge and amazing. There is indoor seating and outdoor seating accessible by large garage doors. The staff were very nice and friendly, and offered their opinions on which beers our group would enjoy. They had a large sampling of IPAs, pale ales, lagers, and sours. Our group tried the Austin Street Lagers, Obsolete Vernacular- a mango ale. and a fox street ale, and enjoyed all of them. If in the Portland area. this is a must !

Yelp
Yet another brewery review from me and another five star! What can I say, I enjoy most breweries and love seeing the wide variety of them around. If you were unaware Austin Street found their start with their original location in Industrial Way Portland area alongside lots of breweries in the area. I believe my first visit and taste of their beers was around 9 or 8 years ago. Once this location opened up it became the go-to for visiting Austin Street as it's updated and honestly nicer. I enjoyed their first location but let's be real this space is more unique and larger! Been to this spot many a times including earlier today. They still have an industrial feel to the place but have so many plants all around to brighten the spot up. Inside while beautiful I must say the true highlight is during warm weather with their large garage doors open. It also adds tons of additional seating to enjoy the weather too! Staff is always so friendly and ready to pour your drink with a smile. Beer wise they have a large variety including IPAs, pale ales, lagers, and sours. Including a special release each year made for International Women's.For non-beer drinkers don't fret, you can find wine, ciders, seltzers, cocktails, and plenty of non-alcoholic options. They also offer some snacks and frequently have food trucks/carts serving as well. With a lot of events scheduled too, including today that was a Summer Puppy Pool Party so as you can tell they are dog friendly. One of the many amazing breweries in this area of Portland. Well made beers with enough options for everyone to enjoy a drink even non beer fans. A place that supports many good charities/causes and hosts lots of events.

Yelp
We just LOVE Austin Street. We visit Portland a few times a year, and Austin Street ALWAYS makes the must-visit list. It is such a beautiful brewery with gorgeous plants and greenery everywhere. They have tons of indoor and outdoor seating and also have a generous pile of games that you can use while visiting. Their service is wonderful, and they are always happy to help you pick the right beer for your tastes. And of course... the beer is really, really good. We will be back again and again!
google avatar

Yelp
My biggest complaint about Austin Street Brewery is that I wish they had more indoor space. In nice weather, there is plenty of outside seating available as well what they do have indoors (including some very comfy couches). There's also a small but fun selection of group/party/card games available in the back. They do have fire pits, which we took advantage of until we could get seating inside, and that helped. But stronger winds (remember, we're near the water) blew the flames from the pit in every direction, and the "shelf" around the top of the pit was maybe 5" wide, which meant anything you put there occasionally ran the chance of being hit by the flames whipping around in the wind. That said, we did enjoy the beer there, which was of course why were there. There were 2 stouts available today, but they were between kegs for one, so I had the other, I liked the flavor, but I wish it had been deeper and stronger. Those seeking IPAs and sours were generally impressed. Definitely include this brewery when checking all of them out in or around Fox St.

Yelp
Super cute brewery, we went in late January and it was so nice inside! Beer was good and service was quick. Would definitely return.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Such great brews and good atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out!
google avatar

Yelp
Now THIS is how a brewery should treat customers. Nice, friendly beertender! Super cool ambiance inside - clean, bright, plants everywhere, comfy mini couches & tables, little heaters. In a word - AWESOME. Delicious beers too. The Short Story Long Imperial Stout is sooo very tasty. Bet it's even better here in warmer weather too with the big garage style doors open! We will be back.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Their session IPA was really solid, zero complaints. Service was great and nobody seems to mind when our toddler decided to play 52 pickup with our table's coasters. Definitely a cool place to visit.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Felt right at home here. The ladies behind the bar are always super friendly and attentive. Lots of choices in town for brews. They do not disappoint. Our favorite trivia night in Portland too. Mondays at 6. Have never tried anything on the menu but the beers are super.
google avatar

Yelp
Another great brewery in Portland. They don't have flights which I don't love but you can get small pours of all their beers. They have some wine options as well if you aren't into beer. They serve some snacks but typically have a food truck on site. I'm not a huge beer fan but when they have a sour I typically get it. Large inside and outside seating area, which is great for big groups. They also have corn hole. A fun brewery to stop at, with lots of parking out back as well.
google avatar

Liz F.

Yelp
Found this place by chance and really enjoyed their local beers. Chill atmosphere with in/out seating and corn hole available too!
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Located nearby Rising Tides, Austin Street Brewery has lots of outdoor patio seating and is perfect for big groups. My suggestion is if you plan to taste beer at one of these breweries, also try the other one. Austin Street Brewery has a large parking lot and occasionally has food trucks. They don't offer flights of beer, but they will let you try a couple before picking something out and they offer a few difference sizes. So, if you're looking to taste or try a few, you can get your beers in 8 oz glasses. Patina, the pale ale, is their flagship beer. I also tried the Kolsch. I liked both beers. I found the folks behind the bar super nice. This brewery is a fun place to spend an afternoon.
google avatar

Catherine M.

Yelp
Stopped in on a bit of a brewery hop- it's definitely Trendy and feels Austinlike. They don't do beer flights but let you try sips- personally didn't love either of the sips I tried but still just ordered one small beer since I was there. The beers all felt heavy and perfume like, one even giving us instant heartburn. Service was OK, love the iPad automatically showing tips only 20% and above. Didn't see food options on a Thursday afternoon but some seating outdoor and indoor.

Elise R.

Yelp
Great brewery, great beer, wonderful staff. Trivia nights on Mondays are a lot of fun. One star off because they need to have more food (there's almost nothing to eat) and they need more chairs with backs!
google avatar

Jenna W.

Yelp
Fantastic relaxed setting...live music, dogs welcome, fresh air and sun! Couldn't ask for more!
google avatar

Jim T.

Yelp
Decent little spot. We got here 30 min before closing on a Sunday afternoon. I grabbed the Offset DIPA. $9 was a bit pricey. It was very juicy but almost too juicy if there's such a thing. The outdoor area is nice and private, albeit right next to some dumpsters which can be unfortunate when the wind blows the wrong way. The "beer tender" was very nice and def helped keep up the positive vibe despite cleaning things up and doing last call. Glad I stopped in but probably would hit the other spots nearby first next time.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Was nearby and decided to stop by and I am glad I did. They have been in business for over 10 years in the area years and at this location for over 5 years. I drank a flight of beers (liked the Six Grains Stout). Service was quick and attentive (thanks Dan). Room for large parties. They have events, so check their website. I would highly recommend drinking. If nearby give it a try. Enjoy!!

Alexa A.

Yelp
Fantastic beer at an equally fantastic price! Hubby and I were on a cruise and decided to stop by here and it was such a great experience. The beer is delicious and the service is great. Emily at the counter provided some really good recommendations for places to try a lobster roll (when in Maine, what do you do, right?). Thank you, Emily, for a great experience!!
google avatar

Graeme B.

Yelp
Great beers and friendly knowledgable staff. Emily is fantastic. Definitely worth the trip!
google avatar

Evelyn M.

Yelp
Good beer. Cute location. It's a huge space so great to go with a big group of friends. It also has a great indoor and outdoor option so you can pick what you prefer.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I attended a wedding reception here, and the beer was delicious. I sampled several of their offerings, and found them all to be excellent. They had a lot of patio seating which was great for our group. The staff did a great job.
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
This was our first stop on our personal brewery tour through Maine. We thought the beers were average for how busy it was. The service was fine, nothing great as well. The best part was the outdoor seating and the modern look of the place. I recommend going to some of the other popular places in Portland before this one, but it is an honorable mention on our list.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Staff were friendly. There are free medical masks and feminine products in the bathroom. Love that. I tried the Glitter N Grit beer. I think it was ok. I didn't get too much of the dragon fruit taste. I also tried the blueberry wine which seemed like red wine with hints of blueberry. It was interesting. I love the plants everywhere. There's a taco truck for snacks. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor seats. They have some merch.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Good brewery! Beers were good. Super cool environment and the staff were lovely! Haven't seen fern that big anywhere else!
google avatar

Caitlin M.

Yelp
Went to Austin Street a few weeks ago. We sat outside but it was breezy. I didn't love the beer, but my husband liked his. The bartenders were really great. They have food trucks sometimes but we brought food from Whole Foods, which is very close. In general, I'd choose rising tide over Austin street but it was decent.
google avatar

Cat J.

Yelp
We enjoyed our time at this brewery. Great beer and bonus points for having alternative choices for non-beer drinkers. The variety of plants add an amazing ambience and chill vibe to the taproom. Will definitely be back when in Portland.
google avatar

Brendan S.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in recently for a few beers while in the area. They had a lot of different styles of beer on tap and all were delicious. The brewery was very bright inside, due to the large windows all around. (This place must have been a car dealership in the past or something) lots of indoor and outdoor seating too.
google avatar

Shay W.

Yelp
A great local spot for a good beer, good music, and almost always an event or tasty food truck! Trivia every Monday night at 6pm! The Fox Street location is open 7 days a week, and is generally steady all days, but exceptionally busy on weekends (think outside standing-room only). Their indoor seating is warm, cozy, and full of hanging plants - very instagrammable. They also have outside seating on their patio with heaters to keep you warm if inside seating is not your thing right now. I always am greeted with a smile (underneath a mask, but the eyes tell all!), and knowledgeable service. The staff know their beers, and also have a selection of non-beer items as well (rotating wine, cider, and non-alcoholic seltzers) so you're covered on all fronts. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Portland!
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
Walked over from Rising Tide after seeing the brewery building and we were glad that we did! There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with a pizza food truck stationed right near the entrance. It's a small selection of eight rotating taps with a fridge full of cold bottles and cans to go. We opted to sit inside on the comfy white chairs with the air conditioning instead of the picnic tables outside. The music was loud outside but it was a great volume inside. The bartender was really welcoming and let me try a sample of the Obsolete Vernacular before I committed to the 8 oz pour which is the smallest size available. My beer was an easy sour to drink and not too tart with a good blend of pineapple and mango. I wouldn't call it a true sour but it was nice and refreshing. My table partners had the 8 oz of the Proximal saison that had an off aftertaste. Overall, the atmosphere was calm and the inside was clean with a nice vibe. Definitely a great place to stop for a cold beer.

Yelp
When I was first introduced to Austin Street, it was at their location at Industrial Way. The space was incredibly small, cramped, and there was nothing that particularly appealed to me. However, in some time, Austin Street has grown and produced this location on Fox Street, which is really stunning. First off, the location is vastly different compared to their Industrial Way location. It's open, spacious, and there are large expansive windows to let in natural light. The brewery adds some nice touches with greenery, which is directly contrasted with the brewery's industrial feel. There is plenty of seating throughout the venue with numerous tables, and during the nicer weather, they open up the garage doors and have picnic tables to sit at. Another huge plus is that this location is near other breweries on the East End of Portland, so it draws in people that brewery hop. Since I was first introduced to Austin Street, they have grown in what they brew as well. Before, there wasn't a beer that I particularly found special, however that has changed since. They brew some really juicy IPAs and have made some really nice sours, as well. My favorite tends to be the obsolete vernacular, which is a sour that is brewed with various fruits. They are consistently brewing and changing their options, so it's nice to try things that may not be around for long. Definitely a brewery to check out when you are on the East End!
google avatar

Graham P.

Yelp
Had a nice time with some tasters here the other day while listening to a great acoustic musician in the space. Staff was friendly and nice chill vibe
google avatar

Julio H.

Yelp
This location is super accessible and in a busy area. The inside looks like a butcher shop, maybe a coffee shop, but it is a brewery with a cooler and canned beers for sale. There are few tables and it is pretty quiet. Outside, there are lots of picnic tables and it is nice to sit outside on a warm day. The beer, yes, I am going with 4 stars, I wasn't happy with the no flight policy (why are breweries not doing flights?) and the session beers were not flavorful, but the regular IPA's and black IPA's were legit, like solid. So, go for the regular stuff. Cool people, nice locals, good beer.
google avatar

Yelp
Had some beers at Austin Street Brewery on Friday night. While I value quality in my beer, that doesn't mean I don't want a nice selection as well. Too much about this brewery felt like style of substance, which may be why my group ended up with more clothing than beers by the time we left. Quality: They only had four of their beers on draft, Patina, Rally, Bombtrack, and Anodyne, three of which were IPAs. I like IPAs and the half pours I ordered of the four beers were perfectly fine, as were the few sips I had of their bottled wild ale Senescent, but frankly I expected more. In a city packed with breweries, throwing out a few average to good IPAs just seemed wrong. As important as quality is, and I felt like Bombtrack DIPA especially was a high quality beer, I didn't feel I was offered anything I couldn't get elsewhere. And worse, for those in our group who weren't crazy about IPAs, not a lot of other good options existed. Quantity: They offer the beers on draft in 8oz, 12oz, or 16oz pours. No Flights, but enough flexibility in size to still try a few. Value: $4-$8 for Draft Pours. Ambiance: We visited the Austin Street Brewery location in the East Bayside section of Portland, Maine. It is a very stylish space, but not the most practical. It is built into what looks like an old car dealership lot, so the taproom has huge windows and a massive ceiling. Inside they had their small bar area as well as merchandise set up, but no seating. On this rainy day, the seating was only under the overhang awning. They had two fire-pits, with chairs around them, which was very nice, then a bunch of tables and chairs that had slowly been moved around throughout the day. In the background classic R&B hits played, but it was not a long playlist and before we knew it songs were repeating. Crowd: They did not have any tables inside, and with the rain, people were huddled under the smaller outdoor patio covered by the awning. It was never too packed, but some extended seating, either inside or under a tent would have been helpful. Service: They needed someone circling the outdoor area every once in a while to swoop up glasses left behind. There were a lot of empty tables just stacked with glasses, and I saw at least one just arriving group have to take a bunch inside to use the table. Parking: No issues finding a street spot directly across the street.

Yelp
My favorite brewery in Portland! Great beer, friendly staff, and good vibes. They have games and almost always have a food truck!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this brewery! We came here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in October which means there were tons of other people with the same idea. They don't have a reservation system, so you just have to stand in line outside for a table. Though that sounds terrible, we only waited about 30 min for a party of two. We also put our name down at Rising Tide next door, which took over 2 hours!! We ordered the Offset double IPA, a normal IPA, and a pale ale. All were great but we ended buying cans of Offset to take home. They have limited food options, so eat before coming! They also have super cute merch! I couldn't resist one of their Portland crew neck sweaters and tote bag. Highly recommend this spot! The beers are great and the environment is chill and relaxed :)
google avatar

Maranda W.

Yelp
For us, it wasn't as hyped as it seemed to be. The beer was just okay in our minds- nothing special. There also weren't any descriptions for what the beers were besides being an IPA or an ale, etc. They had some fire pits and a big tent but it was still extremely cold in the tent. Lots of cute dogs though!
google avatar

Bryan P.

Yelp
Fun spot to have a nice beer. Austin Street Brewery was a chill spot. Kind of cramped in terms of seating, but we were able to share a table with some other people. Dog friendly on the patio, not allowed inside. Nice staff, not super pricey, cans available to go. They don't do flights, but we ordered 3 8 ounce beers and shared them. They had a food cart inside if you're looking for a bite.
google avatar

Ariana L.

Yelp
Their mint and lime sour is excellent. Also absolutely loved their DIPAS. They make really good beer here and there are plenty of places to sit. It's right on the strip. You could bring anymore here to either their taproom or outdoor seating area. Both are immaculate. Service is really good. Prices are good. I will be back.
google avatar

Tetsu C.

Yelp
Great beers, good location, awesome crowd, friendly bartenders and high fun factor is what I thought of during a visit at Austin Street on a weekend trip in Portland. As a fan of IPAs their Neverender l, a double IPA and Paseo, a west coast IPA satisfied my quench. I love the location of this brewery. It has plenty of parking and the facility is clean. It's a brewery I would visit again when I visit Portland.
google avatar

Terrilynn D.

Yelp
I had the COFFEE SIX GRAIN Milk Stout with Coffee, 6.4%. Delish. We sat outside on a 64° February day in Maine and did find a spot out of the wind while in the sun. Relaxing and clean.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Austin Street is one of my go-to local breweries. They have a frequent rotation of new brews which keeps it fairly fresh each visit. They do not offer sampler flights but if you ask to try "a little taste" of any brew they are happy to oblige free of charge which is a great way to find a beer you like before pulling the trigger on a full 12 or 16 oz pour. In the warmer months they have a rotating by the day variety of food trucks which provide great eats to go with beers, our favorite being farmtocoastmobilekitchen! Favorite beer is by far the Walcott, a smoked brown ale that is truly awesome! Other standouts are the Bennu, a coconut stout or Six Grain, a milk stout. Easy to find location with on site parking, an open area outside and inside with plenty of tables and good vibes with the nicest bartenders. Highly recommended!

Nicole T.

Yelp
We rented out the Austin Street Brewery for our rehearsal dinner before our wedding and it was the perfect place to host. We ordered catering from Otto Pizza and had Lady Shuckers with fresh oysters. Everyone on their staff was helpful and accommodating not the mention the brewery is gorgeous.
google avatar

Giselle R.

Yelp
Great beers in a fun, bright, clean, and spacious venue! Outside seating has powerful heat lamps which is great when it is a chilly Maine day. They don't have their own kitchen but they have Great Wave Sushi serving up delicious bites to go with your beer.
google avatar

Kurtis R.

Yelp
This is the second brewery that we went to along this strip in Portland, and it was great. Their beers were very tasty, and I think that they were spot on with their IPAs. In addition to the great beers, they had a charcuterie truck in front (separate business, I assume) which was selling nice finger foods to compliment their beers. The ambiance and friendly service helped to bring this brewery to the forefront of the local watering holes in my opinion.
google avatar

Zac G.

Yelp
Have not been to the new location and look forward to seeing how the brewery has grown since it's days in the industrial park when I visited. I always enjoyed the beers at the old spot. Patina is a great pale ale that's hard to turn down if you're at the brewery.
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! My first time at the new location and it did not disappoint! The woman the helped us was super friendly and guided us through the different styles with a smile! We sat outside around a propane fire which kept us warm while it snowed. Will return again soon!
google avatar

Kristina G.

Yelp
We love the vibe in here. There is a modern industrial feel in here and there are beautiful house plants all around the space. There are plenty of tables inside, in addition to a large patio outside. We visit in the winter months and it doesn't appear that the outside patio is heated. There are no dogs allowed inside, however they do allow dogs out on the patio when it is open. They featured 8 beers on tap, but also had a full cooler of their canned beers. I had the obsolete vernacular and I loved it for a sour. You could really taste the fruity notes in the sour. The day that we visited they featured a mobile food truck - mr. tuna sushi! It looked delicious. We loved the beers that we had here and everyone in the party had a beer that they liked! We will be back!
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Adorable brewery in a great neighborhood! It closed only a few minutes after we arrived, but I was really impressed with the COVID-safe environment and the tap list!
google avatar

Eddie M.

Yelp
Such an amazing selection of beer with some especially great hazy, juicy, unfiltered New England style IPA's. The space, however, was the big winner: Post-industrial with cool/ tasteful decor, an ample patio, and an overall great ambiance. This is a can't miss up in Munjoy Hill.
