Free Barbecue at Coaster Saloon | Eater San Diego

"Hosting Outstanding in the Field on Sunday, May 27, I noted that Autonomy Farms in Bakersfield, CA will be the site of a multi-course farm dinner led by an all-female team of culinary leaders; the event is hosted by farmer/owner Meredith Bell and will feature Samantha Sheehan of POE Wines and a chef trio of Bricia Lopez of Guelaguetza, Allison Osorio of Otium, and recent Top Chef competitor Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins, who is gearing up to open El Jardin in San Diego." - Candice Woo

I purchased a mix box and chickens. So far everything we tried were tasty. There was a missing chicken from the order, but Meredith was very responsive and shipped the missing chicken. I read reviews about poor customer service, but I received great customer service.

Although this area was a beautiful landscape, I will never be staying here! Be AWARE do not bring your animals, they will be attacked by the dogs. Especially the bulldog, it had my dog pinned down and biting it not letting us grab her! Very dissatisfied and disappointed that we asked for a refund and didn’t receive it because “we didn’t follow the farm rules” understand we were at the farm maybe 20 minutes and didn’t stay. We also weren’t there long enough to break any rules and we were VERY respectful and nice toward the owner while asking for the refund. If you want to stay at this farm allow yourself to know that refunds aren’t available apparently. Absolutely astonished at the disrespectful way me and my family were treated while talking to the owner.

So far I have ordered several things from Autonomy farms and feel they have great customer service. I have been wanting to find a local farm, where I can find good quality meat and eggs and I have not been disappointed. They have the option for local delivery and pick-up here in Bakersfield and I have utilized both. Do yourself a favor and try their bacon (They have a bacon/burger subscription), it is the best I have ever had!

Editing this review at the request of autonomy farms. They have told me they will not refund my money unless I delete my review but I've just updated it to be most accurate. I will insert ** where edits have been made. This review is regarding the subscription meat boxes they provide. Originally ordered this because it had minimal wrapping and delivered to my farmers market. The service is so horribly disorganized, it's a wonder they get anything accomplished. Multiple times I received incomplete boxes because the attendant doesn't have a checklist to ensure she's handing out full orders. I was told it was my responsibility to verify I got everything complete, which I understand but when you're busy grocery shopping and the attendant says "here you go, that's all of it", it can be easy to trust that they are doing their job. Also it's super complicated to switch subscription boxes (from chicken/beef to chicken, etc) ***This makes it confusing to know which subscriptions are still active or not, which can result in you getting charges you were not planning on because in order to switch you need to start a new subscription and pause an existing one. Customer service response time (via email) is slow because "they are farmers" which is understandable but I think waiting a month for response is a little much. Although if you leave a negative review, they will respond within the hour! Also my previous version stated they had no phone number, which was incorrect. It is on their website under contact us, but is not listed on receipts or automated email communications where I was solely looking. ***end of edits Originally the variety and quality of meat was enough for me to deal with the customer service but they've started putting more cheap cuts and the same cheap cuts every month. I was attempting to go around this issue by changing up my boxes but then I landed in a whole new issue. This service is absolutely great if nothing ever goes wrong with your order or if you don't ever need to make changes. If not and you need to deal with them directly, good luck! Like they told me, their type of product can be found anywhere (and prob with way better service!)

I've been a customer for years. I used to pick it up at the farmers market but now they deliver. Its fantastic meat and I love knowing I'm supporting local people. I haven't had any issue with my orders.

Very friendly people. We were just visiting the farms around the Bakersfield area and this farm was beautiful so we stopped by and spoke to owner, she welcomed us her to farm and offered free eggs and explained everything about her farm. Will definitely visit again.. Thank you.

Yelp
I've known Meredith for years. I saw her with quiet determination and poise to rebuild after a huge flood that would have destroyed most businesses. I knew her before she won the favor billionaire Tilman Fertitta. And this weekend I formed and grilled burgers from her ground meat and it was delicious. With every bite I could literally taste the fresh Californian air, the nature and feel the goodness; just epic pure, natural and unadulterated meat. Thanks she being the best, Meredith!!! Do towels a favor and get to the Hollywood farmers market on a Sunday, but this meat, and thank me later, no thank Meredith.

Yelp
Don't order from this company, there are plenty of others out there willing to provide good customer service and not be snotty. My first order arrived thawed. UPS was one day late for delivery. This has happened before with orders from other meat companies with no problem. I told them they should use dry ice. The box was extremely heavy, just two steaks and two chicken thighs. The box was filled with white ice blocks, all thawed, and the box was wet, and bloody. Never buy from a company that doesn't let you call them-you must send a message. They did respond and blamed it on UPS. They sent out another package. It arrived on schedule-same thawed package. The woman accused me of lying, she said it was not warm, she could see ice on the packages (I sent her a photo). I guess she also couldn't see the wet cardboard and the pooled blood in the packages. She said she put "7 pounds of dry ice in the box" . I think she is the liar. The box was again full of mushy white plastic ice packs. No evidence at all of dry ice (no empty bag either). I have no meat, and no refund. I would be purchasing a lot in the future, but they have lost me as a customer, and I will not be recommending them to anyone.

Yelp
This place is beautiful and the farm dogs are absolutely a joy to be around. They are so kind and so is the owner. I'm so glad my boyfriend and I came here to camp. We will definitely be visiting again. I highly recommend this campsite.

Yelp
**WARNING, DO NOT STAY HERE*** Hello. Just to be clear, the Angry dog was already locked in the Bathroom When we arrived at the location, We let the dog out, but when it attacked our dog and near our baby we put the dog back in the bathroom. As we left the location we let the dogs out. No need to make up lies! Just to be clear, we care less about the money & more about the safety of customers with newborns/children. These dogs are VISCOUS. **Rude staff, this lady that owns the place is a liar, and will respond back with lies. Have been reading lots of negative reviews on Autonomy Farms Bakersfield, be careful.

Yelp
*NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY Horrible place, first 5 minutes being there, their two farm dogs (1 bulldog) came snapping at our 1 year old daughter!! And pinned our dog to the ground. The lady we called who owned the place was extremely rude & we kindly asked for a refund and she denied it. Heads up to any family's that are wanting to stay there. Also the bathrooms were very dirty, with toilet paper all over the place !! Response to you. Hello. Yelp
I live in Northern CA and had my chicken order shipped. The chicken didn't look right, smell right, or taste right. It came frozen, of course, and packed with lots of blood -- liquid that 'cheats' the amount of chicken you are actually getting -- which is also gross and not like any other purchase of chicken I have ever made. The color of both the defrosted AND cooked chicken has this greyish tint, which is also something I've never seen in any other organic and/or non-GMO fed, free range or pasture-raised, poultry. The label on the packed chicken with blood SAYS NOTHING about being pasture-raised, or free-range, or vegetarian-fed, or non-GMO feed. NOTHING. If it's not claimed on the label, it's probably not true. Whatever claims Autonomy Farms makes on the website, or at local farmer's markets, they don't put it on their label. Buyer beware. One reviewer noted the owner bringing the business back after flooding. My guess would be that compromises have been made to make that possible, compromising the wellbeing of customers being sold substandard chicken. I can't believe they sell this quality of chicken at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market. I grew up in west LA and have been to the Santa Monica Farmer's Market dozens of times. It tends to draw discerning customers with informed standards. I really don't know how Autonomy Farms is surviving with this poor a product. Although I love to support woman-owned businesses, it was my first order with Autonomy Farms and it is definitely my last. Awful, awful chicken!

Yelp
We had our wedding a couple of weeks here, and I can't rave enough. Meredith was incredible from start to finish and the venue was absolutely stunning...our guests raved about it. She was accommodating, communicative, and so so helpful and I will forever remember how perfect our event was. THANK YOU!!!

Yelp
The local farmer's market scene has done a great job over the last several years of introducing our community to some amazing vendors. From the market we've gotten to know and love the delicious produce out of Autonomy Farms. We originally signed up for the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box. If you're unfamiliar with the concept, you basically commit to purchasing a box of produce every week that is put together with seasonal offerings. While this sometimes means you may eat a LOT more squash than you might normally, it's a fantastic introduction to seasonal and local eating, and proved to be an amazing way for my husband and I to break out of cooking ruts. When we signed up, we were put on the CSA email list, which is sent out every week with the contents of the box and recipe suggestions for how to use some of the produce. (Last summer we discovered we're HUGE fans of shishito peppers!) Each week also comes with a meat item or dozen eggs. It rotates each week, and on the meat weeks we received everything from bacon sausages to homemade chorizo. Autonomy also has a meat box, and of course their weekly meat and vegetable options at the local markets. All of the meat we've received has been delicious - I'm eagerly awaiting hosting Christmas dinner next year just so I can treat me guests to one of their prime ribs! As can be expected, the meat is pricier than you'd find in the grocery store, but worth the splurge. Last but not least, Autonomy staff has always been exceptionally friendly, working with us to delay the produce box for an extended period when our schedule changed, and quickly communicating whenever we needed to make a substitution. I look forward to their upcoming expansion to their new farm space to see what new items they can bring in. If you've stopped by the weekend markets and not hit up Autonomy, it's not one to miss!

Yelp
I first heard of this place when I was signed up for Thompson fitness boot camp. I learned that they raise and grow their meat and produce in a humane and natural way. I get fruits and veggies from them at the farmers market and you can definitely taste the difference and see the difference. I love what they're doing and I love supporting local farmers!

Yelp
Everything we've ordered has been great quality and cooks wonderfully! If you can, I highly recommend ordering a roast from Autonomy for Christmas when they announce their pre-order.

Yelp
Great food and nice workers. Never had a bad cut. The price is a little higher than most people are used to. But that is due to the extra steps taken in raising the animals. Give it a try and you will see what good beef should taste like.

Christina C.

Yelp
Completely rude staff. I would've thought they people would have more friendliness and be helpful but just an overall bad experience. I don't mind paying good money for quality product but they definitely didn't have that. Just an overall disappointing experience. And NO I will not recommend it to any friends or be told to delete my negative review! Fix what's wrong so you don't get bad reviews !

Yelp
My wife and I just had a porterhouse smoked to medium rare on our Treager. We kept repeating that the steak was sooo good. We've been steady customers for about 2 years and the meats keep getting better and better. It's important to realize that you can't cook grass fed beef too much. It's not like beef that is fed so as to make it fat in order to hide it's lack of flavor and nutrition. Autonomy Farms beef is not only delicious but packed with the nutrition missing in the typical store beef. How can you miss with great nutrition and great taste. This comes with the bonus of dealing with some of the most wonderful, hard working people that you'll ever meet. Rory M.

Yelp
Ordered the beef tenderloin and bacon ahead of Christmas. Everyone at the dinner table agreed it was THE best cut of beef they have ever tasted. And for breakfast the next day, the bacon was outstanding. I think we have a new Christmas dinner / breakfast day after tradition thanks to Autonomy Farms.

Yelp
It saddens me to post a negative review, but I sure don't feel very good about my experience with Autonomy Farms. I signed on for their monthly meat program. They charged my credit card right away, but never sent the product. After two friendly unanswered phone calls, I stopped by Autonomy at the Farmers' Market. I was told my order would ship Tuesday. Nothing ever came, so I put in two more calls before I finally got a response, but it wasn't a response that there had been an error and my order was on the way. Instead, it was an "I can't locate your order" response. Still, I was patient. At last, a package arrived, partially frozen and partially defrosted. It contained a tiny chicken, maybe a half-pound of bacon, a pound of ground beef, a pound of kebobs and a thinly sliced round steak weighing about a pound. For $75, I got a four-five pound package instead of the 8-pound package advertised, so I am not happy at all. Plus, I am not that wild about the flavor of grass-fed beef, which is why I checked the box on the order form for "grass-fed and grain-finished." Everything was labeled "grass-fed." I guess I just can't win with these folks.

Minnie H.

Yelp
I would eat the beef and all products Daly with confidence I'm eating clean and healthy don't ever give up and if you could find a way to get me to your farm I would work for you with pride.
