"Aux Anciens Canadiens in Upper Town is a venerable favorite amongQuébec City's restaurants. It opened in 1966 though the building it's in is almost three centuries older than that, having been built in 1676. It's easy to find—the red-roofed house looks as if it were moved from the Québec countryside into the heart of the city. As it happens, it was the other way around: After the house was built, the city grew up around it. Inside, there are five different dining rooms, all equally cozy and inviting, especially if you are visiting in the winter. The menu focuses on solid, excellent traditional dishes, many featuring game: bison stew, red deer fillet, grilled stag, and bison and wapiti tenderloins. And for dessert, try the maple syrup crème brûlée. The $20 three-course prix fixe menu comes with a glass of house wine and is a good option if you are on a budget, though be aware that there are supplemental charges for many of the dishes offered."

We were in Quebec City for 4 days of vacation. We stayed in the upper old city and we were able to walk to most of the historic sites and good restaurants. We researched this restaurant from home so we went one night without a reservation. The hostess took us to the back room as the front room was all reserved. Back room was also nice. We ordered grilled salmon, escargots, sparkling water and a nice glass of French red wine. The escargots were part of the prefix dinner which I ordered. A desert came with it. My wife ordered salmon off the menu. Food was delicious and the atmosphere was nice. An enjoyable evening. I recommend it highly. BTW, the restaurant is a free standing 300 plus year old house.

I’m not sure how this is considered great cuisine. I found the dishes to have strange flavor combinations. I ordered the bison stew and it came with blueberries on top. The pastry was also bland. Vegetables had no flavor or seasoning. Overall the taste is very below average and nothing special at all. 3-4 small cubes of bison for $60. Service was excellent though. Just wish they didn’t pretend they were serving luxurious food. $60 is a rip off for what they’re giving you and you’re probably better off finding something else in the area. The desserts were also disappointing. I’ve had much better at a fraction of the price. This place is a tourist trap. Glad I tried it though.

Incredible VALUE and DELICIOUS traditional Québécois fare. Over the years we have enjoyed many fabulous meals in this restaurant. The decor is charming with many antiques and the food is ALWAYS consistently delicious. You literally can't go wrong with any of their offerings. Staff is always friendly and helpful to help you pick your meal!

Wow! I cannot say enough about this restaurant and the experience eating here. From the moment you walk in you feel at home and welcome. For a smaller space with low ceilings it has excellent acoustics. Located in one of the oldest buildings in the old city, you feel you stepped back in time. Our server, Nicholas encouraged us to practice our French and was very hospitable. The lunch prix fixe offers an amazing array of traditional Québecois paired with wine or beer. Do indulge in the desserts. Mon dieu!

Google
We had a great dinner, started with onion soup and goat cheese salad for my daughter breaded chicken with potatoes and I had steak. For Dessert we had blue berry pie which was delicious and we had Cream Burlee. Nice stuff and good service.

Google
On the menu outside, this seems like a good deal. Once the food are presented, then it's easy to find out the meal does not justify the regular price. The service is great, food is good but nothing out of the ordinary. There are better options around the area.

Google
I would 100% recommend this place! We tried the red deer, bison, and elk meat, and it was delicious. We also had the traditional dish poutine, which is fries with gravy and cheese. As a dessert we had a typical pie with maple syrup which was AMAZING What really stood out was the kindness and attention of the staff at all times. If you’re visiting Quebec, you shouldn’t miss it!

Google
Had our lunch in one of the oldest houses in QC. Traditional Quebecois food was good. Love the Quebec meat pie and the maple syrup pie dessert. The set meal is quite good deal when shared.

Yelp
I wanted Quebec on a plate, and I got it here! When you walk in, you walk into the 17th century. I loved every minute of it - cozy, historical, and fun! Our waitress was excellent. I started with pea soup, and it was light and tasty. I never had this but saw it was a must-have in Quebec. It was a great start to the meal. My entree was grandma's plate. I had meat pie, which was savory and delicious. It paired perfectly with the fruit ketchup. The meatballs with gravy were hearty and tasty! The baked beans were wonderful. I love just a mess of good food on my plate! For dessert, when you can't decide, you get both! The maple pie was a delectable slice. So sweet and good. But the real star was the blueberry pie. It hugs you, like just plain awesome, like grandma just sliced it up for you fresh from the oven. Yum! This historical side of this restaurant alone makes it worth the trip. I am so happy to have had a taste of Quebec here!

Yelp
This is definitely an iconic spot to visit, especially if it's your first time in Quebec City, however, I found most of the food overpriced and lacking. The staff are wonderful, and the ambiance is very cozy, and make sure you read about the history of the restaurant on the menu (or their website, I forget where I read it!). I did not get the set menu and opted for the pea soup, the meat pie, a glass of wine and the maple syrup creme brulee for dessert. While my partner ordered the hamburger steak and traditional pot of baked beans. Of everything we ordered, only the maple syrup creme brulee dessert was good. Most of the food was either under-seasoned or overcooked. If you do visit, just get dessert! Or maybe the key is to try some of the game meats instead.

Yelp
We stopped by Aux because it's said to be the oldest restaurant in Quebec, Canada, and while the location is undeniably charming, the experience fell short. The restaurant is tiny, which adds to the atmosphere, but unfortunately, the food felt overhyped and overpriced. There are definitely better options nearby with higher-quality food at more reasonable prices. The service felt rushed, almost like they just wanted to get us in and out quickly. While the staff spoke some English, the vibe felt a bit passive-aggressive, which made the experience less welcoming for non-French speakers. As for the food, the salmon was probably the highlight--cooked well and flavorful--but the pie was disappointingly dry. Overall, the ingredients didn't seem very fresh, and the whole experience felt more like a gimmick than authentic dining. I wouldn't personally return, but it's a cute spot if you're looking for a bit of history. Just don't expect anything extraordinary.

Yelp
I had eaten here years ago with my family, and I was really excited to come back! First off, the restaurant is housed in the oldest house in Quebec (and probably one of the oldest in Canada). It's very homey and cozy. Also! They finally have a vegan option for dinner!!! I had the onion soup, vegan pot au feu, and the maple creme brulee. It was a lot of food! The onion soup was incredible. It probably was not vegetarian (I decided not to ask if the broth was veggie) but it didn't taste like meat at all. There was so much cheese and bread in the soup that it probably could've been my meal on its own. I looove pot au feu and I have never found a vegan version, so this was very exciting. They had triangles of tofu, a good mix of veggies, and a very yummy gravy. The desserts were also amazing. I had the creme brulee but I also tried my friend's maple sugar pie. If you've never had this pie, I highly recommend trying it. It's amazing! I do recommend making a reservation because this is a very popular spot. Our waiter was very attentive and had some good recommendations on what to order. Overall a really good, classic Québécois meal!

Yelp
This might be a tourist trap but nonetheless a good place to visit for traditional cuisine of Old Quebec. It was a great experience and the service was good. The decor was apropos for the restaurant and felt like we were transported back to an ancient time. The food itself was decent. It was different but fun to try. I had the three tenderloins grilled (which included red deer, bison and elk), all meats I've never had before...the elk was probably the most interesting and tastiest. I was not really a fan of the bison. Maple syrup, as expected, was infused in many of the dishes and desserts, which added a nice warm and smooth sweetness to them. The pontine of warm duck confit, was a welcoming flavorful twist to a traditional Canadian dish. I

Yelp
I enjoyed all the food I ordered. This place is very close to city hall. There was a fixed price for the 3 course meal, and it came with a beverage. Lunch is served before 5pm. I'd come back to try more things here.

Yelp
I read a lot of great things about this restaurant and wanted to try authentic Quebecois cuisine. I have to mention that this is one of the oldest buildings in town dating back to 1655 which is an experience in itself. The restaurant opened here a couple of decades ago and has a very nice vintage interior as well as serves many local dishes and wine. I have ordered their grandmas plate and a piece of blueberry pie - both were solid and I was quite happy with my meal. I didn't feel the server was the friendliest or attentive although I would expect that from a restaurant at this price point. To sum up, it was a good experience, but I can't say it is worth the money they're asking. You can probably find a better place nearby to try out local cuisine.

Yelp
Really nice. The outside is like a cottage and that's the way it feels like inside. I was worried because it also looked pricey. It was only $22 for full course meals. I had poutine there for the first time. It was deliciously done. They had nice wine by the glass as well. Although it was busy and we weren't eating light we were well taken care of. I loved it there.

Yelp
I needed a restaurant in a pinch and it was close to my hotel. This restaurant is located in the oldest home in Quebec-1677. I got a bison shepherd pie, which was really good. The restaurant is very homey and reminds me of a home that I would find in the country side. It wasn't too busy when I came on a Tuesday evening in early May. Service was attentive.

Yelp
Thought this might seem like a tourist trap, the food is pretty good and authentic. It's located in the Old Quebec area right across the street of Le Buche. We ended up going here because we saw the line at Le Buche and decided to head over to Cochon Dingue, but then I saw this place because of the YouTubers who posted it on their channel. When I first checked out their menu and saw the prices, I was going to pass this up, but then I noticed that this place was $39 for a prix fix menu. This included a beer or wine, appetizer, main menu and dessert. There are some items that you can order for an uncharge. Overall, the food here was really good and for the price, you cannot beat it, especially since the prices listed is in Canadian and not US. So with the exchange rate of $1.37, it actually comes out cheaper. The service was great and attentive. We were seated right away on a Sunday. They actually have quite a bit of seating available. I like that there's a sink right by the front door so you can wash your hands without having to go upstairs for the restroom.

Yelp
A great little restaurant serving traditional dishes of Quebec. It's in a charming old house from the 1600s and full of comfortable ambiance. The menu is striking for its variety of interesting selections. They had a fixed price menu, with variations, including an appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink. I chose a mixed salad with beets, a pie with bison meat (Bison Bourguignon), and the Creme Brulee. All of the meal was well prepared and delicious, and the hint of maple syrup in the salad dressing and dessert added a nice touch. The bison was absolutely tender and most satisfying. The chunks in the pastry just fell apart with the touch of a fork. The gravy was just perfect and seeped so well into the pastry, which was super flakey and thin. It came with three plump blueberries on top. The blueberries throughout Quebec are exceptional and sweet. Do not miss having them. The Creme Brulee was also exceptional and an ample portion, as were all the dishes. We also had the Chicken Cordon Bleu and Bread Pudding. Equally good! The house red wine was a wonderful accomplishment. The meal was relaxed, the surroundings cozy, and our wait person was wonderful. It's a really great place for an authentic meal.

Mackenzie F.

Yelp
Location is really unique. Very cozy inside. We did the 3 course pre-fixe dinner. Loved the beef Wellington and maple bread pudding. Don't get the poutine, it was not good. Escargot was delicious!

Yelp
Stumbled into this quaint little restaurant in Quebec City. We were greeted and seated right away. Parmesan fondue was crispy on the outside, soft and melty- if that's a word inside. Chicken noodle soup with vegetables was nice and piping hot - great on this cold day! We shared the bison pie and medallions of deer, bison and elk. Both were equally delicious. Dessert of maple pie and maple bread pudding were also very good. All in all it was the exact meal we were looking for on our first visit to Quebec.

Yelp
Food was delicious! I was skeptical going but we decided to give it a try for some authentic Canadian food. We went for lunch which was a great deal. We had wine or beer, soup, main entree and dessert for $40 Canadian dollars. Service was good, they didn't rush us out. Highly recommend a visit to the oldest restaurant in Quebec City for authentic food and cozy, rustic ambiance

Yelp
Love the prix fixe menu. I came here twice on my trip. Loved the beef Wellington. Next time I will splurge on the bison/venison dish!

Yelp
What a terrific evening . Excellent Québécois fare, superb service, in a delightful and historic place. What's not to like? If you have the opportunity, go. And enjoy this very special restaurant!

Yelp
This restaurant is an institution in Old Quebec. I have eaten here a few times in the past several years, this last time, I decided to try...a really large Quebecois plate....I decided to try their Grandpa's treat: Québec meat pie, meatball ragoût and pig's knuckle, salt pork grillades, baked beans. It was very heavy...very filling....A bit salty for my taste. The service is nice, the decor is early Colonial, like walking into a large Old Cabin in the early days of New France.

Yelp
Service was pleasant as was our typical experience throughout the Old City in Quebec. We had the three course meals. My beet salad starter was quite bland with some of the mildest salad oil I've ever tasted. The salmon and roasted turkey (chef's special of the day) were fine. The vegetables served with the entree were awful. There was one whole, small carrot and a couple green beans on top that were fine, but they rested on a pile of veg mush that appeared to include zucchini, carrots, and maybe some other things along with the worst vegetable in my opinion - black olives. All one can taste is olives. A person needs a warning about olives, is all I'm saying. Go because it is the oldest house in the city, but don't get excited about the food. If you visit the toilets on the 2nd floor please be aware there are only two, so you should not take the time to watch the entire video that is playing because people are waiting to use one of the toilets. Thank you.

Yelp
If you are looking for a tradition Quebec region meal, we would say that aux Anciens canadiens is a good place to start. Located near the old city this restaurant did not disappoint. We were seated promptly and greeted by our waiter quickly. The portion sizes were ample. We opted for pea soup-delish, grandmas plate-which was a sampling of meat pie, meatballs, beans, potato, veggies, and their ketchup, half of my party couldn't finish their meal. Additionally the maple syrup pie was good but very sweet. If you like syrup, sugar, and butter all mixed together, this is your choice. We would definitely go back if we were looking for a traditional meal.

Catherine W.

Yelp
Seriously overpriced; food was mediocre. I was curious to see the interior of the building since it's the oldest structure in Old Quebec. It's interesting but not worth the price of the food.

George S.

Yelp
A special place for original Quebec food. Good service and good food. Definitely a place to eat

Brian L.

Yelp
Aux Anciens Canadiens was fantastic! There is a fixed price for a drink + appetizer + entree + dessert ($64 for dinner). The server was so nice and fun and each course was excellent. This was my favorite meal by far over a 10-day trip around the province. My only regret was not going until my last night in the city, so I couldn't go back.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife, two young children, and myself walked-in without a reservation around 4:15pm on a Wednesday and there were only a few other parties eating. The ambience is nice, you really feel like you stepped back into time. The house (originally built in 1676) was rebuilt in 1699, and the field stones are exposed on several of the walls, as well as the stairwell leading down to the bathrooms. Service was fantastic at the restaurant, which is not something we had grown accustomed to during our 6-day stay in Quebec City. They have a good deal with cheaper pricing before 5pm that includes a glass of wine or beer, appetizer, entree, and desert. We both ordered soups for our appetizers, I had the pork tenderloin for an entree while my wife ordered a duck confit salad, and we both had maple syrup pie for desert. Everything tasted really good except my pork tenderloin, because it was so dry. We ordered both of our sons the meatballs off of the kids menu. They were expensive for kids meals ($22 CAD each), but came with a soup or fries, mashed potatoes, and green beans, as well as an ice cream desert. My boys are 1 and 6, and it was so much food that we would have ordered just the one meal for them to split if we had known the quantity up front. In fact, one of this place's kids meal would definitely feed most adults (they also tasted really good). We're glad we stopped in for the experience.

Yelp
Great food. Service was excellent. Excellent ambiance - friendly and authentically Canadian. Reasonable price.
google avatar

Deka Lash V.

Yelp
The interior reminded me of old Europe. We came here for the meat pie, which was quite tasty. The fixed price menu was a fair price, although our maple pie was very much like pecan pie without pecans. The result was it was too sweet and lacked texture. The building is the very oldest in Quebec and conveniently located near our hotel inside the walls of old Quebec. For the appetizer, we ordered the bison cheese fondue but it wasn't fondue and there was only a minimal amount of bison mixed in with the cheese. Def a touristy stop and you can likely find more authentic experiences around town.

Mark W.

Yelp
The menu was exactly what we were looking for. We both ordered the Prix menu enjoying the house red wine. My wife had the vegetable soup giving it high marks. I had the bison fondue which was very good. We both had the duck confit salad with the maple vinaigrette dressing and the flavor was excellent, though a little less dressing would have been fine. My wife had crème brûlée which was a great was to finish her meal. I asked our waiter what his favorite dessert was and had excellent hot blueberry pie. His service was excellent.

Yelp
Cant' leave Quebec city without visiting this place, as restaurant is highly recommended by many due to its historical significant and the classic French Canadian cuisine they offer. It did not disappoint. In fact, our dining experience here is one of our highlights from our trip. We came here at around 4pm, so they still offer their lunch special, which is about $33 per person, 3-course meal, it comes with an appetizer or soup, choice of drink (beer, wine, juice or soda), a main entree and a dessert. We got the Garlic escargots au gratin (add extra $ for this appetizer, so worth it) Pea soup (a classic type of soup here), Lac St-Jean meat pie made with wild meats "caribou, deer, elk, beef and pork" served with fruit ketchup: this one also needs to add extra $. Meat lovers - You will definitely appreciate the complexity of this meat pie dish, the combination of the finely grounded exotic meat is something you can't find anywhere else. Coulibiac style salmon, lobster sauce and small vegetables: very unique dish. Salmon inside of the buttery fluffy puff pastry. The creamy lobster sauce is heavenly! Maple syrup pie and Maple bread pudding! You can't leave Canada without having all the maple syrup desserts. You get to try one of the most famous maple syrup desserts here. They both are fabulous, neither is too heavy, just right amount of sweetness. I wanted to come back here and just get the dessert again.

harmita s.

Yelp
Our waiter was excellent and quaintest ambiance, food was québécois but found menu somewhat limiting to only québécois cuisine.
google avatar

Vic C.

Yelp
My wife and I came here for dinner hoping for some authentic French Canadian Cuisine, we were disappointed. First the good things: the ambience is nice and cozy and the beer was good. The food however, was meh. My wife's onion soup was flavorless, very sad since we were expecting this to be authentic, no bold beefy flavor, too much bread and not enough onions, cheese was also lacking. I got the poutine, which was ok, except the cheese curds were rubbery. For our main entrees, I got Grama's meat pie with wild meats, which was very dry. My wife got the 3 wild meat tenderloins, which she said was ok, but not as good as Sagamite Restaurants version, which we had the night before. Dessert was blue berry pie, which was average at best. Go somewhere else, like Sagamité.

Elle C.

Yelp
Overpriced tourist trap past its prime. Food quality and preparation very poor. Waiter, though nice enough, didn't even acknowledge half-eaten portions. Note that the automatic tip % is based on the total including the nearly 15% tax! Unethical. Atmosphere is nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Located in one of oldest buildings in Quebec City. This restaurant features local Quebec food. They have a fixed price menu or you can enjoy selecting your food. The fixed price includes appetizers, main entree and dessert plus a choice of beer or house wine. Grandma favorite was good, enjoyed the pork lion, grilled chicken with hazelnuts, the duck salad and the potato Aug gratin. They cream brûlée was delicious and the blueberry pie was so good. The service was first rate and everything was great. Reservations are highly recommended. They have art from local artists that is also for sale. They have seating upstairs and downstairs. The servers are terrific. An excellent place to stop in Quebec City.

Yelp
We were told to come here to taste real Canadian comfort food. It is very busy and if you are handicapped and can't get up or down at least 15 steps you will not be able to use the bathroom. Trying to wheel my aunt in was also tough and needed help from strangers. This is OLD Quebec city and there have not been any upgrades for the handicap. No ramps from sidewalk to sidewalk. Our waiter was polite but I would hear him telling the table next to us about the building or the food and he did not tell us until I asked. But once I asked he was more than happy to tell me everything. With a strong accent it was a little hard to understand but he was so happy to tell you anything, you just have to ask. My aunt likes sweet wine and I like beer but they did not have anything to match our taste so we got a soda. I noticed how the water is put in a glass container and kept on the table with small drinking glasses. I loved this and noticed it at another restaurant. We did not see the other side of the menu but if we had we would have ordered less food. You can get just the meat pie or the meatballs almost like a side dish. Wish I had seen that. But when in Canada, do as they do, so we ended up getting the "Formule" deal for $39.99 Canadian. It comes with an alcoholic drink, appetizer, main dish and dessert. We choose pea soup, Grandma's treat, and I got the blueberry pie with ice cream and auntie got the maple syrup pie. The flavor of the pea soup was good but I did not like that the peas were hard. Grandma's treat consisted of meat pie, meatball ragout, bake beans, a chutney style relish and red cooked cabbage with wax beans. The bake beans had no flavor. We are from the south so we were thinking a little sweetness or some kind of flavor but plain jane they were. The meatballs were tasty. The meat pie was bland and with out the chutney it is just hamburger in a crust. I don't care for cooked cabbage but it was good. Don't know why they put wax beans on the dish as they are bland also. NOW the dessert is a different story. It was very good. I personally think the Maple Syrup pie is too sweet but my aunt loved it! I thought the Blueberry pie was very good and much better than the one I had in Bar Harbor, Maine. The walls of the main entrance of the building are five feet thick and was this place was built in 1675-76. The other sections are three feet thick. The place has a very comfy feeling; lots of wood embraces you. The dishes are beautiful and really make the meal look nice. Service- 4 stars, Meal- 3 stars, Atmosphere- 5 stars, handicap accesible-0 stars and the price- 4 stars even if I did not care for the food.

Yelp
This is the place to be for a great meal with great atmosphere! It serves traditional Quebec food with some recipes straight from the 1600s. Make sure to ask about the artwork because it has a neat history. I highly recommend the blueberry pie! I know you'll be full from the meal but it's worth busting out the dessert stomach for.

Yelp
SO and I stopped in for lunch to experience the food from this interesting looking, little white and red house. As its website says, its cuisine is old fashioned Quebec. We shared the escargot and seafood platter...the former was made with olive oil and garlic and then they covered it with cheese...a little different and heavy, yet tasty. The latter comprised of nicely seasoned shrimp and scallops surrounding a lobster tail all atop a delicous pool of a buttery and creamy lobster sauce with asparagus and beet accompaniments...ordering this will get you a free beverage and dessert (we got the maple syrup pie which we took to go). Certain advantages come with a place this small...the service was very attentive and they were also very knowledgeable about their menu. Every visitor should try this place out.

Cynthia B.

Yelp
Loved this quaint restaurant- the oldest in Quebec City! We each had the prix fixe menu selections: (starter, a glass of house wi e or juice, dessert) pork tenderloin was succulent, tofu and vegetables, and the chicken cordon bleu all very tasty and plentiful portions. The blueberry pie and pain pain Perdue with maple syrup were excellent. Excellent value for money and highly recommended!

Lani L.

Yelp
One of the highlights in Quebec city dining for my trip. The interior was rustic and seemed quite historical. There were (from what I understand) classics of Quebecois cuisine, and the prices were quite reasonable. I especially enjoyed the bison bourguignon - the meat was super tender, slightly sweet, and dressed in creamy stew. The desserts were very sweet, so be a bit careful.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Nice food and service. Loved the pork meatballs and meat pie. Also, escargot was fabulous!

Yelp
The food was okay. There are much better food choices in Quebec City. The house is very cool and old. The service was good.

Yelp
To be honest I was not sure at the beginning, but after reading the menu and asking a couple of questions I got convinced and luckily for me I decided correctly. The ambiance is amazing, looks like going inside an hood ancient house. The service is superb. They are very sweet and literally spent a lot of time to explain the food and the ingredients for each plate you ask. The food is outstanding. Really old recipes well made and taste so good. I got the trio of meats and was amazing. My wife got the cordon blue and was so tasty. Both my kids got soup and chicken tenders and they were well made. But the maple pie, wowwww, unbelievable literally. I will be back here for sure.

Yelp
Fixed-price lunch--served until 5pm is a great deal. Appetizer, entree dessert and wine/beer for 40 CAD. Recommend the small upgrade foer the slice beef tenderloin in the apple brady sauce (not sweet).

Michael D.

Yelp
Don't let the looks of the outside of this historic building fool you, this was one of our top picks after three days of searching for tje perfect meal. The escargot was my favorite, the melted cheese charred perfectly to compliment the flavor of the escargot swimming in butter below. Prices were reasonable and the menu was traditional dishes, which was what we had been looking for. I would go back.

Yelp
I'm from the West coast and this is one of the most charming and historic restaurants I've visited. It made such a memorable experience. For our first night in Quebec, we found this restaurant after a quick search online (there were so many positive reviews!), we decided to try it, but it was fully booked solid. So, we went to a different restaurant and the food was so disappointing that we immediately walked back to Aux Anciens Canadiens - minutes before closing - to make a reservation for the next night. And I'm super glad we did. My first impression was that the ambience was absolutely perfect for the setting of UNESCO world heritage sites, inside the fortified walls of Quebec City. For the interior, think low ceiling, exposed brick walls, dim lightening and tight corners. We were seated on the second floor inside a small room next to a little window. I ordered the 3 course meal, traditional dish, which consisted of a Beer or White, French Onion Soup, Grandma's Treat (meatpie and meatball) and maple syrup pie. Every dish was delicious. The onion soup was super generous with cheese, the meat pie had a super flaky crust and the maple syrup tasted exactly like its name. It was gooey and super sweet, so perfect for anyone who loves sugar. My partner ordered Escargot,Beef Wellington and Maple syrup crème brûlée. He loved the food. Overall, customer service was super and the dishes were delicious and unique, drawing on its own heritage roots. If you're looking for a menu that taste similar to every downtown Canadian or American chain or diner, this wouldn't be for you. Instead, if you're looking for food that tastes authentic like a home recipe with its own secret spices and portion then you're in for a treat! I would make a point to visit again (with reservations) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place! A+ in my books.

Yelp
If you go to old Quebec City this restaurant is a good representation of this historical city. The building is one of the oldest in the area and you get a real sense of the way it used to be: dimly lit, small, low ceilings , wooden structure and authentic cuisine. The waiters and waitresses also dress the part. My wife and I had what the waitresses suggested and we were not disappointed. Started off with the onion soup, followed by the grandmother meat pie. I've had onion soup elsewhere in Quebec but this was different in terms of broth and cheese. The meat pie was excellent in terms of crust, meat and spices. The dessert was a blue berry pie and just superb. All in all, as others have already reviewed, great ambiance and service along with great authentic cuisine.

Yelp
Bienvenue chez grand-mère! If you have never tried French Canadian cuisine this is the place to go. Our family of four had the table d'hôte menu, a (semi) fixed price menu that consisted of a house beverage, an appetizer, main meal, and dessert. Because we were there before 5:00 there was a $10 CAD discount, making the base price of the meal $38.95. Since there were four of us, we decided we'd each have something different. Appetizers: Meat Pie, Parmesan Fondue, Meat Creton, Poutine Of the appetizers the best were the meat pie and fondue. The Creton and poutine were a bit flavorless, but they were true to form and a great way to try both dishes. Main Course: bison bourginion, the trio go wild meat tenderloins (red deer, waipiti "elk", and bison, grandmas meat pie and ragout, and beef Wellington. All of the entrees were good, stick to your ribs kind of meals. The meat pie and ragout tasted just like my French Canadian grandmothers (I have her recipe from 1920 when she married my grandfather and it is exact!), the Wellington was delicious, the bouginion was classic, and the wild meat trio was amazing. The vegetable sides, red cabbage, wax beans, and beet were okay. Something pickled would have been better to cut the richness of the meals but that's quibbling and would not have been traditional! The desserts were EXCELLENT and we would come back just for the dessert. Pain perdu (maple bread pudding), maple pie, crème brûlée and chocolate pie were all delicious. The one we liked the least (and even still we liked it) was the maple pie. It was good but honestly tasted like the bottom layer of a pecan pie. It would have been better with a layer of nuts! Overall a wonderful place to eat. Just like grandma's. I encourage you to go.

Yelp
Great value for their $39.99 menu. It can be even lowered to $29.99 if you have dinner in the afternoon (before 5pm). But you have to pay attention to the options covered by that price and do the upgrade when needed. For example, escargot needs $8 additional, but it is worth. I also regretted that I should also upgrade the main dish.

Yelp
Best sugar pie. Good for group dining. 3 course set meals. I came here so many times during my stay in quebec. I was always impressed. It's on the famous street from the citadel to the frontenac. Service was always superb. My favourite dishes were the game pie and the sugar pie. They take reservations. Even on holidays. Do this if you dont want to wait in line. Theres always a line. It's an experience to eat here as it's the oldest restaurant in quebec. The dining room is cute. But honestly this place makes the best sugar pie.

Yelp
We almost walked by not realizing it was a restaurant. So glad we ate here. Great character and ambiance. The food was great too. We had zero complaints! Perfect for lunch, early dinner. We did the 3 courses plus a drink for $39.99 each. Great deal for what you get. Casual and cool ambiance with quaint little rooms throughout the building. Get the Quebec meat pie! So gooooood! Great service too!
