"Aux Anciens Canadiens in Upper Town is a venerable favorite amongQuébec City's restaurants. It opened in 1966 though the building it's in is almost three centuries older than that, having been built in 1676. It's easy to find—the red-roofed house looks as if it were moved from the Québec countryside into the heart of the city. As it happens, it was the other way around: After the house was built, the city grew up around it. Inside, there are five different dining rooms, all equally cozy and inviting, especially if you are visiting in the winter. The menu focuses on solid, excellent traditional dishes, many featuring game: bison stew, red deer fillet, grilled stag, and bison and wapiti tenderloins. And for dessert, try the maple syrup crème brûlée. The $20 three-course prix fixe menu comes with a glass of house wine and is a good option if you are on a budget, though be aware that there are supplemental charges for many of the dishes offered."

On the menu outside, this seems like a good deal. Once the food are presented, then it's easy to find out the meal does not justify the regular price. The service is great, food is good but nothing out of the ordinary. There are better options around the area.

The pea soup and duck confit were delicious. The portion sizes for the main course and dessert were quite large — a bit too much for my taste, but great if you're really hungry. I also appreciated the availability of non-alcoholic beer options.

We really enjoyed our experience dining here. We both loved our meals—we each had the table d’hôte. Everything tasted like it was prepared with love, not too salty, full of home cooked flavours. It was a real treat to have a traditional Québécoise meal in a historical building. Nice art. Our server, Sam, and his colleague were friendly, attentive and charming. This was the whole experience you could hope for when visiting a place and wanting to discover and learn through food.

Thought we would try this restaurant for our final night in Quebec but it wasn't great. My seafood starter was good but my wife's Quebec meat pie didn't taste nice at all. Ah well. Next was the red wine. Undrinkable. I had to send it back but there was no wine replacement as we were having the fixed menu so I had to have a beer. Ah well. I had the duck confit salad which, though colourful, was nothing special. My wife's pork dish was nothing special either. When it came to dessert I noticed they served it with that aerosol cream which I don't like so I asked if I could have my dessert with ice cream. No I couldn't. They have ice cream on the menu so I couldn't understand why not. My maple syrup tart was fine but my wife's dessert was heavy. Ah well. So, when the bill came at $190 I wasn't minded to give a tip. The waitress made a public display about the fact that I hand't left a tip and I pointed out that if I had received good service, she would have got the tip. However, she argued that she did give good service and should therefore have a tip and got quite angry about it. Not surprisingly, we wouldn't go back.

We had the pleasure of dining at Aux Anciens Canadiens during our vacation in Quebec City, and it was a memorable experience that combined history, atmosphere, and traditional Quebecois cuisine. The restaurant is located on the main floor of a historic house, with low ceilings and thick stone walls that give it a warm, rustic charm reminiscent of the homes in Little Women. A central fireplace serves as a stunning centerpiece, adding to the cozy and intimate ambiance. The upper floor houses private dining areas and bathrooms, making it a versatile space for both intimate and larger gatherings. Its location in the heart of Old Quebec makes it a convenient and inviting stop for an authentic culinary experience. We started with a selection of appetizers: the Fondue Parmesan au Bison Fumé et aux Fromages d’Ici was excellent — rich, smoky, and perfectly melted. The Coquille de Crevettes Géantes et Pétoncles au Gratin was good, though not as memorable as the fondue. The shrimp and lobster bisque was a bit underwhelming — not bad, but lacking the depth of flavor we were expecting. For the main courses, we tried Les Trois Mignons — a trio of perfectly cooked and flavorful cuts of meat, which was the highlight of the meal. The Filet de Boeuf Wellington was well-executed and interesting, with a delicate pastry and tender meat. The Bourguignon de Bison was rich and hearty, showcasing the deep flavors of bison beautifully. Dessert did not disappoint. The Tarte au Sirop d’Érable was a must-try for anyone who loves sweet treats — rich, sticky, and delicious. The Crème Brûlée à l’Érable was perfectly creamy with a crisp caramelized top. The Pain Perdu à l’Érable was another standout — perfectly cooked and balanced in sweetness. The service was attentive and friendly without being intrusive, and the overall atmosphere was warm and relaxed, with low noise levels that made it easy to enjoy conversation. However, while the historical charm is part of the restaurant’s appeal, the décor and furnishings could benefit from an update to balance the old-world feel with modern comfort. Overall, Aux Anciens Canadiens offers a charming and authentic Quebecois experience with a few standout dishes and a cozy atmosphere. It’s a place that leans into its historical roots while delivering a solid, if slightly uneven, culinary experience.

While exploring Old Quebec City late in the evening, we came across this — a charming, historic restaurant that was still open. Though it was getting quite late, we decided to stop by for dessert, but ended up ordering a few savoury items as well. It turned out to be one of the most pleasant surprises of our trip. We started with their duck meat poutine — a rich, hearty take on the Québécois classic. The fries were perfectly crisp, the cheese curds melty, and the shredded duck added a deep, savoury flavor that made the dish feel comforting yet elevated. For dessert, we had the maple syrup bread pudding, which was warm, soft, and indulgent — the kind of dessert that feels like a hug on a plate. We also tried the maple creme brûlée, which had a silky smooth custard and a perfectly torched sugar crust. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and our waiter was incredibly friendly and helpful, with a kind smile and welcoming attitude that really stood out. Overall, Aux Anciens Canadiens was a delightful late-night find — full of character, flavour, and charm. Highly recommended if you're in Quebec City and want a taste of authentic local cuisine with a cozy touch.

It’s a perfect place to get lunch when you walk around. Excellent food, perfect service and atmosphere is at its best! Thank you for the experience! The restaurant uses a house which was built in 1675! Everything is original. You are like in a museum.

The location is idyllic down the road from the Chateau Frontenac. My dish (bison bourguignon (which had a hint of creamy blueberry sauce)) was served in a puff pastry shell that once emptied of its main ingredient remained dry on the bottom. My partner's dish Lac St -Jean meat pie was fortunately served with a delectable fruit jelly, however, there was not nearly enough of it to help swallow the dry dish. This restaurant has been there for many years. It is clear from many reviews that sometimes there is too much sauce or seasoning, and I'm envious of the photos that show extra sauce as we literally had to sip our drinks to get it down. Aux Ancients Canadiens is lacking the joie de vivre that makes quebecois fare so delectable. My partner grew up eating French Canadian food and was deeply disappointed by this visit. This restaurant is the perfect experience for someone with a delicate palette that wants to try traditional Quebec comfort food, without worrying about seasoning. This site is a fond favorite for many. Their atmosphere is still relaxing and warm, the service is excellent and multilingual. For myself it is not worth revisiting, particularly for its price point.
