The Best Bakeries in Paris, According to a Local | Condé Nast Traveler

"One of several Parisian outposts of the famous Lille patisserie, this shop matches the look and feel of all others, with a sleek black façade, counters and display cases in Alicante marble, and a bohemian crystal chandelier. It's all about the merveilleux here, a specialty from Northern France: an airy, layered meringue mound coated with sweet whipped cream and enveloped in a variety of coatings, from chocolate flakes to caramelized hazelnuts." - Lindsey Tramuta

We were walking past and smelled the amazing brioche being baked. We had never tried a merveilleux before so we got their classic chocolate flavor. It was delicious! They are so pretty and taste wonderful. The staff was also nice and helpful to us. Definitely recommend!

During our recent travels in Europe, we passed by countless bakeries—but none had an aroma quite like this one. The irresistible smell just pulled us in. We decided to share a raisin brioche, and after the first bite, there was no turning back! It would have been perfect with a cup of coffee, but I couldn’t wait—I started eating it the moment we stepped outside!

Google
A truly great bakery experience! One of the highlights is being able to watch the team prepare the fresh brioches right in front of you — it adds a special touch to the visit. Whatever you do, don’t miss the large sugar brioche while it’s still warm — it’s an absolute WOW. Soft, slightly crisp on the outside, and perfectly sweet. Pure heaven. A must-visit spot for pastry lovers in Paris!

Omg. We ran into this place by pure accident after lunch. We were stuffed from lunch, we even had dessert, but we had a third stomach to wolf down the treats from this place. What a gem with great chocolate chip brioche and meringue fluffy bite sized dessert. We are still dreaming of this and will go back tomorrow for breakfast to eat on the street. I will post more pictures tomorrow. We devoured the food before taking pictures.

Visited this place twice during my stay in Paris. I tried the meringue chocolate and it was the perfect dessert, totally enjoyable. Second time tried the chocolate bread which they call "Cranique" I think or something close and this is a great pastry with moist tasty chocolates. They have also with raisins. It's very big though and can be easily shared between two persons. They have multiple branches across Paris, so check which is within your itinerary and go for it.

Must-have meringue desserts! They are light, airy and flavorful! It was a unique dessert that is perfectly and expertly executed. Beautiful shop with a helpful staff.

Google
Another fancy place with lots of hype! In fact, you get 20 grams of cream for 2,5 euros! I sent half of the pastry into the bin, waste of money

Google
This is an incredible bakery offering unique and delicious treats at excellent, affordable prices. The highlight of the place is the brioche, especially the chocolate brioche. If you’re lucky enough to get it fresh and warm straight from the oven, it’s an unforgettable experience.

Yelp
Great bakery with fresh and creative light desserts. We tried the raisin n sugar brioche , it was out of this world , we inhaled it in a few minutes. We also tried the chocolate and pistachio mervilleux ,they were light and perfect with some coffee but nothing special. Try the brioche instead, especially right after it comes out of the oven

Yelp
These are a delicious little meringue that melts in your mouth. Get the minis and try a few flavors. My favorite was the Caramel. Service was not very friendly but the shop is cute with the huge chandelier. Worth a try.. these are unique, I don't think I've seen this exact treat in the US.

Yelp
The little Marveilleux treats are out of this world. They hit your sweet spot without you having to overly indulge. No wonder why French people are thin and Americans fat with our super-seized dessert portions.

Yelp
As my mom and I were strolling down the street in Paris, this bakery caught my eye. I wasn't sure what they were, but the unique texture and pretty colors beckoned us in and we purchased a couple of the mini desserts. They are extremely light-sort of like a marshmallow or whipped cream, rolled in a slightly crunchy flavorful concoction. I've never had anything like it before, but it was delicious. The yellow one was lemon and the pink was strawberry. We arrived just a bit before closing, so we didn't get to watch the magic from the window, like others have done. But if you can, I'd recommend you do it so you can see how this mysterious treat is made.

Yelp
The mini wig/heads were amazing! I had praline Magnifique. They melt in your mouth and are very rich.

Yelp
Love their sweet bread loaves and amazing pastries. We stop and buy whenever we run across Aux Merveilleux in Paris!

Yelp
For a different bakery experience in Paris, I'd say a Merveilleux pastry is the way to go. Definitely lighter than other pastries you'll have in Paris and a good change of pace. You might skip this if you're not a fan of meringue but there's some other pastries worth trying here too. You can tell they put a lot of effort and care into making these desserts light and airy and if you're into cream based desserts than this is right up your alley.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my first introduction to the Merveilleux Cakes and they were every bit scrumptious! So much flavor packed into this mini perfectly-sized mini merengue cake that I wanted to try them all! There were other sweet treats available for sale, so if you're looking to satisfy your sweet tooth with something other than macaroons, give this lovely pastry shop a try!
google avatar

Amit M.

Yelp
First time having a Mervilleux pastry and was very impressed. It's so light, feels like you're eating a cloud. Definitely a dessert spot to check out if you have a sweet tooth.

Yelp
I had the Cramique with raisins. I had no idea it would be warm. I had purchased it to have for breakfast tomorrow. Some of it made it back to where I'm staying. It's delicious. But what will I have for breakfast?
google avatar

Roxana Q.

Yelp
The little meringues are whatever honestly but the chocolate chip bread is legit! If you don't come early, there will be a long line on most days - especially the weekend. I was staying nearby so I came early am/end of day. I got the sugar bread and the chocolate chip one. The chocolate chip was by far my favorite...so good, I got it twice.

Yelp
My fiancé and I stumbled upon this bakery while we were on the way to our apartment. What stood out for me were the mini cakes facing the window. I went in to get a box of 6 for each of the different flavors they had. To my surprise, they were meringues. Each meringue dessert had a unique flavor palette and cream filling. The most memorable meringues for me were the chocolate flavor, the speculoos and white chocolate flavor, and the one covered in chocolate bits. I haven't had anything quite like these, so it was nice trying something completely new for dessert from a patisserie/boulangerie.

Yelp
This place was a stop on a Paris Food tour and what a treat! These treats may look heavy, but they are a light treat that is very unique and a definite must try and delicious. Not sure I could eat more than one of these since they are so sweet but they were a pretty decent stop to try authentic a Parisian dessert.

Yelp
Omg!!! That became our favorite spot for the fresh and super tasty pastry rolls and those little pastries "Merveilleux ". Incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious rolls and pastry. We didn't try the cakes, but the rolls - we keep coming here every day of our stay in Paris. We tried many things in different pastry shops, nothing is even close to those rolls. They make them right on spot, and the cakes as well, you see the whole process. Our favorite was the roll with raisins!!!!! My The packaging is also very sophisticated and elegant. Liked everything. The service was great too, the salesperson/ baker was super nice and polite. The place is not cheap, but so worth it!!!

Yelp
This is one of the classic French patisserie with a very interesting style of dessert. It is really cool to watch them to make the item as well from the window. It is a must try friends. I feel like meringue or marshmallows, is kind of a hybrid of those two consistencies. It was really enjoyable in your mouth. I think that is something that worth a try. There are even locations in other parts of the world. I am from the Toronto area and noticed that there was a location there as well. It is clearly a very notable French desert, and has a lot of care that goes into creating it.

Yelp
This place is merengue heaven. I feel like merengue is something that I get very excited about but typically tastes like it's been sitting on the shelf for a bit too long...not here. These merengues are so fresh, so hypnotizing and creative. I got the incroyable merengue (4.7/5) and I have to say as far as merengues go, this one really knocked it out of the park. The texture was on point. This is more of a "line up, order and leave" type of place, with nowhere to really sit. That being said, I would happily go back and try more types of merengues as passerby give me amused looks on the corner of the street.
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
We came here in our Secret Food Tour of Le Marais. Sampled the most amazing merengue desserts. We brought a sampler box back to our flat but they smooshed together. It did not affect the taste at all! Miam Miam!

Yelp
We got a fair amount of sugary treats while walking in Paris. The first time we passed Aux Merveilleux de Fred, I was full from eating fallafel and ice cream. The second time, we decided it was fate and ended up purchasing a few desserts to go with our poulet roti. They offer a large (3.5€) and small (1.75€) sized meringue dessert. I'm not exactly sure what you call the meringue desserts but let me just say, it's like eating sweet pillows of heaven! Forget macarons, these little babies are to me so much more delicious and special! We purchased the chocolate, speculoos, cherry, and cafe flavors. All were AMAZING! I'm in love! They also sell other pastries but they were covered in what looked like wasps. I was shocked that this seemed normal to the workers and customers. That is actually true throughout Paris. But for me, I just couldn't get over having wasps crawling all over food I was about to eat. While this bakery isn't too close to our hotel, I have a feeling we'll visit one more time before we leave Paris. They are just too delicious to pass up and I need to get my fill! Who knows when we'll visit Paris again?!

Richard N.

Yelp
Disappointing... unless you like meringue. Nothing else. No indoor/outdoor seating. There are better bakeries around.
google avatar

Xiaoting X.

Yelp
Was going for a drink at Caviste Vinosfera and saw a long line waiting outside. Looked up and it's known for Merengue. Tried salted caramel and chocolate, preferred the caramel even though I'm usually a chocolate fan. The caramel one just got a lot more interesting texture. Worth a visit!
google avatar

Marilen R.

Yelp
One of the best desserts I had in Paris, and I devoured plenty of pastries and desserts while I was there. The cake is composed of layers of fluffy merengue and wonderful frosting with delicate flakes of chocolate or other toppings like white chocolate, coffee, nuts, etc. They also come in small, medium, and large. We chose the classic one with chocolate flakes. It was so heavenly and divine. You must try.
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon Aux Merveilleux by chance and decided to try it out since I saw a line out the door - if there's a line, then it has to be good, right? Right exactly! Aux Merveilleux is famous for their meringues and after having one, I fully understand! Service here was super helpful and I ended up trying a mini coffee flavored meringue, but I now wished that I got the medium sized because I couldn't get enough! Slightly crunchy but so airy at the same time, it was perfection!

Yelp
The chandelier catches your eye from down the street it looks like it belongs in Cinderella's castle. Beautiful. They have a few items brioche and 2 other desserts. The place is clearly doing very good for it's self just look at that chandelier. The bread was fantastic of course I left it out a day had to zap it quick to get the warm chewy taste again. Deserts were like nothing I've ever had before they have caramel dark chocolate vanilla and cherry small ones or large.

Yelp
Unexpected, sparkling clean and inviting is what you get with this small busy patisserie in Paris. They have a very simple idea, two puffy macaron like sweets filled with various cream in between layers and rolled in different types of chocolates and toppings. Makes for a great sweet on the go... We tried the chocolate and coffee flavors and they were amazing. Simplicity of what the make and the quality of ingredients does it for this small gem. A great place to try when you are in the go.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
I am not a huge meringue fan but a local wait suggested we visit this place as it was one of his favorites through Paris and it was without a doubt one of the better desserts I've ever had. We enjoyed the chocolate, strawberry and lemon options. So much too choose from I'm headed back there tomorrow :)

Yelp
While on our way to L'as du Fallafel I saw this place and a line out the door. After finding out the falafel place was closed on Saturdays I decided to try this palace out. They specially are iced merengues and an assortment of breads. I chose three merengues and a pain au chocolat made with brioche. Both were very good, but the bread was by far my favorite. It was not you typical pain au chocolat that is filled with a ganache. This was a spiral loaf of light brioche and dark chocolate chips. Staff spoke English.
google avatar

Krystle T.

Yelp
We stopped by this gem because there was a long line outside. They're smart because it's a tiny store so 5 people already make a long line! What's pleasant about this shop is that you can watch the bakers make the meringue, whether it be just a little one or a big cake. We ordered one chocolate and one praline. The chocolate one was ok, pretty good, but the praline one is what I would eat again. It is about 2 euros per little puff.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
I read about these meringues before I came to Paris, forgot about it, and then immediately bought one when I stumbled across this place while walking back to my hotel. I got the regular size of the Le Merveilleux (cost: less than €4). I ordered in my high school French, the shopkeeper answered me in English. I ate it a few hours later (didn't refrigerate first so as to not soften the meringue)-- it's simply one of the most scrumptious desserts I've had. If you see one of these shops in Paris, buy something. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
The chandelier caught our eye first, and then the delicious smell of the bread. We bought the plain brioche and two of the smaller meringue balls (I didn't realize they were meringue and thought they were more like cream puffs). As other reviewers mentioned, that were way too sweet (I'm also not a meringue fan). But the bread was amazing and we are still dreaming about it. Before dinner we were supposed to try "just a pinch" while it was still warm. We quickly devoured the entire loaf and decided we needed to go back the next day for another. Alas, we ran out of time and didn't have a chance to return, leaving us dreaming of our next trip to Paris where one of the first stops will be at Aux Merveilleux de Fred.

Yelp
I don't know exactly how or why people make these but they are amazing little treats! Buy half dozen and plan on eating them ALL in one sitting. They are extremely sweet but very light and airy. I was told that they won't keep overnight so eat them all the same day...I'm not sure if this is true or not but we obeyed orders and ate them all the same day:)

Yelp
meringues!!!definitely try it!the line is every time, highly recommend this dessert shop

Yelp
We stumbled on this place in the Marais district on our way back to St.Louis Isles. I love meringues and this place just blew me away. The meringue cakes were to die for. The plain meringues crisp yet so chewy. The flavored rounds rolled is sweet goodies marvelous. Loves watching them make them. As we left, the line was around the block.
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
I didn't realize how super sweet the meringues would be. I got a mini assortment and couldn't take more than 1 nibble of each. I ate so many different pastries in France and I guess I'm not a meringue fan. However, their bread - we tried their raisin bread - was THE BEST raisin bread I've ever eaten. It was light, fluffy, not too sweet but still a bit sweet, and addicting. We ate the entire loaf during the walk. If you don't like super sweet (mainstream American level sweet), don't get a meringue - but definitely buy their bread. If you like super sweet Americanized desserts - you'll love the meringue.

Anne M.

Yelp
Oh my goodness. It was the smell of baking chocolate bread that first caught our attention. Then the windows full of what looked like cakes. So we went in. They had smaller bon bons that looked like the cakes in the front display case and we thought we were ordering those. But then they gave us tiny little one bite merveilleux and they were heaven. These are the lightest meringues you ever had, covered in whipped cream and rolled in either chocolate or coffee or caramel or speculoos or cherry-flavored crunchy bits. And when you bite into them, they disappear in a poof of heavenly delight. I have never had anything like them. Now if that weren't amazing enough, there is that bread there. There were a couple of different varieties, but the chocolate chip one was what we were after. They gave us a loaf right out of the oven. If I lived anywhere near this place, I would be 500 pounds as I would go there every day to get this stuff. Nothing like having a warm bread with melting chocolate bits (and this is the good chocolate, not the crap we get in the States) right out of the oven. The smell! The flavor! We went there 3 times in a week. Just go there. It's not expensive and there is nothing quite so pleasurable as these little puffs of magic. And the chocolate bread. Oh. I wish I were there still.

Yelp
This is Paris' little hidden tourist gem. We stumbled upon this place only by walking past it and seeing a line out the door at 6:30pm in November when it's 45-50 degrees out. A lot of locals were here and they don't really speak English inside, so that's how we figured it must be good! We stood in line with everyone else and they kept pulling trays and trays of bread out and placing more in the oven. By the time we got up to order, there was only 1 bread left for that batch, it sells out so fast. The large sugar bread was my absolute favorite. They are known for their Meringues, which was my bf's favorite pastry that we had in France, but I absolutely loved their breads. The meringue is very light, airy, flaky, and fluffy. We took it home with us since we were leaving the next day and when we oven baked it, it was still so good, can't imagine what it would taste like if it was fresh. I would definitely recommend trying this place if you happen to be in the city.

Ana B.

Yelp
The most amazing dessert you will ever taste. Once you have tried their meringue (L'Incroyable, my favorite) you will dream of the next time you have the pleasure of eating it once again. So delicious!

Yelp
Omg best ever meringue desert ever small light and stuffed with flavored whipped cream so delicate and delicious highly recommend trying all flavores

Yelp
We found this place purely by accident after our day at Notre Dame. We were pleasantly surprised at the warmth and the amazing smell coming from this charming place. But the real treat was the brioche bread with sugar!!!! Absolutely incredible. I hope I can find something like it in the States. Seriously. I would go back to Paris just for this. Lol.

Yelp
The smell of the pain au lait draws you in and it doesn't disappoint, stop by in the late afternoon for a fresh batch
