Detroit-Style Pizzeria Michigan & Trumbull Has To Relocate - Eater Detroit

"This is the second popular eatery in Detroit in the first few weeks of 2023 to cite that high rents forced them to move. On January 4, Avalon Bakery in the Cass Corridor announced that it was closing its flagship location on West Willis and is planning to occupy a space inside Jolly Pumpkin, which is situated about a block away from the bake shop’s original spot." - Serena Maria Daniels

Neighborhood Vanguard Avalon Bakery Is Streamlining Production and Closing Its Flagship Willis Street Location - Eater Detroit

"Avalon Bakery for the past quarter century has been considered synonymous with the dramatic transformation of Detroit, and more precisely, the Cass Corridor. But a piece of that history is about to disappear. This weekend, Avalon’s flagship Willis Street cafe and bakery will close, with the business relocating to a space within Jolly Pumpkin a block away." - Serena Maria Daniels

After a walk along the riverwalk, I wanted something to tide me over for the rest of the afternoon. I saw Avalon was popping off and looked like a pretty trendy place. I decided to order the sausage, egg, and cheese muffin. It was pretty tasty and was a nice light meal. My only real complaint is that the service seems a bit slow for a breakfast place.

Covert Culvert

Google
I went in there because it's advertised as a cafe and bakery. `It's really more of a cafe with some baked goods. I ordered two blueberry muffins to go, and it came to $8. I honestly didn't even look in the bag until I got back to my hotel. You can see the size of their $4 muffin, and in the other picture you can see that it looks blue(?) on the inside. That is the extent of the 'blueberry' in their blueberry muffin. It really had no flavor to speak of, and certainly nothing remotely related to blueberries. I can't say anything about the cafe aspect, but I don't hold out much hope.

Google
Spent an hour or so here before a red wings game. We warmed up first with hot tea and delish vegan bakery items. We hung out a little more and decided we wanted a hot meal too. The avocado toast was quite interesting but tasty. The piece of sourdough they used was HUGE I needed to use a knife and a fork to cut it. The spices and cucumber on the top were tasty. A lot of cute little items here and there were sturdy mugs for sale as well. I wish there had been more vegan options but it was nice for sure.

Google
Best coffee in the city! Everything is super fresh and all of their lunch items I have tried are delicious! You definitely feel the mom/pop type of business here. Highly recommend

Google
Nice spot with great vibes in downtown. Lots of choice. I liked the drink I ordered. Lived up to the expectations

Google
This place was solid. It was well worth the walk from my hotel. I had the avocado toast with wild mushrooms and it was delicious. The bread was thick and fresh and the avocado and mushrooms were perfect. If you are in Detroit looking for a nice breakfast in a fast/casual type place I wouldn’t look any further.

Google
Stopped in here while walking around downtown Detroit to get a warm drink. They had a very large menu, plenty of seating, and lots of baked goods. We were able to get in and out quickly. Got a couple of mochas and some snacks to go. Everything was very good. If you are looking for coffee, or other warm drink this is your spot.

Google
For over a decade I've loved Avalon. They have fantastic vegan options from bread to sweets and much more. The service is always great and the ingredients are clearly quality.

Yelp
Very pleasant cafe. Charming staff and nice ambiance. Music was cheerful. The food was tasty, interesting, and healthy. Definitely coming back when in the area.

Yelp
Avalon Café's Spanish coffee is the kind of pick-me-up that feels like a warm hug with a little sass. Rich, bold, and perfectly spiced, it gave cozy café vibes with just the right kick to start the day especially in Detroit's cold weather. The balance of sweetness and strength? Chef's kiss. Sipping it inside their welcoming, artsy space just makes the experience even better. A must-try for any coffee lover passing through Detroit!

Yelp
Really cute cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Vegetarian and vegan options too. I had the wild mushroom avocado toast. Generous portion. The mushrooms were a bit salty for my taste and it overpowered everything else and I couldn't taste much avocado, but I enjoyed it overall. The steel cut oats bowl was tasty. Excellent service. Fun and colorful decor.

Yelp
Stumbled across the gem in search of brunch. It's been a week since I've dined here and it's still on my mind. The staff were super friendly, the establishment was well taken care of. I loved the outdoor seating options. We were super disappointed that both the French toast and pancakes were out when we got there, but we found alternatives and our only complaint was that the bread on the avocado toast was over toasted. I also tried the honey nut oat latte and let me tell you... as someone who does not drink coffee that drink... that drink could convert me. I actually skipped out on a portion of my training a few days later just to go get another. It was like a hug for my soul. This place has a real chill vibe and is good for one on one or group dining. I actually suggested this as a spot to group dine for next year's training. See ya next July!

Yelp
I was visiting Detroit last weekend, and came here for brunch right after my flight--it's not far from the DAX downtown stop. I got the breakfast sandwich with chicken sausage, egg & cheese as well as the lavender lemonade. The sandwich comes with chips or greens. Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. The shop itself was clean and cute with welcoming staff. Very clean restrooms as well. I will absolutely come here again if I make it back. I should've gotten coffee here as well--I was disappointed with the latte I got at a nearby cafe.
google avatar

Martez J.

Yelp
You're downtown so it's gonna be busy. This place got a lil bit of everything. It's nice inside. Food is good but it's a lil over priced. Come prepared & treat yourself.

Yelp
Looking for signature barista drinks? What about a delicious breakfast? Well, this is definitely the place. When i came, the line was out the door and for good reason! The food here is fantastic! I ordered a cortado and it was made perfectly. Not too much milk nor was it steamed too much. I then got a chai latte and let me tell you... It warmed my heart up to capacity. Makes you feel good inside. I had the appetizer of the Fall Harvest Chili and man... It truly hit the spot. I finished my experience with an avocado toast and i was very surprised (and pleased) with the portion of this meal. 10/10 recommend. I would try to and avoid the weekends if i came back. This is a order at the counter and self-seating place so space is very limited. Accommodating large groups to dine in may be difficult. I almost did not eat here since the line was out the door but ended up being enticed by the smells of the fresh baked goods.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow idk why I wasn't expecting much from here. Just wanted a quick bite to take to go but I ended up eating my entire to go order sitting down because it was that good! They have plenty of nice seating too. I asked the employee what she recommended and she told me the turkey sandwich on sourdough not ciabatta. I got it with their greens and an oat milk latte with honey and almond syrup and it was literally so delicious. I will be back here when I come to downtown Detroit. Thank you Avalon!!
google avatar

Rebecca O.

Yelp
Avalon Cafe has such a comfortable environment and a first rate selection of sparkling pastries. I attempted the almond croissant and a latte--both have been tremendous. The place can get a little crowded during height hours, which slowed provider slightly, but the great made up for it. Perfect spot to unwind with a heat drink and a deal with.

Yelp
We waited an hour for our food. Coffee was good, some food was okay some was not good. Big bones in the salmon, English muffins were cold and soggy and yogurt was warm. It was okay but definitely wouldn't come back. Disappointing to say the least.
google avatar

Mya H.

Yelp
I will definitely be back. The food is fresh and the service is top notch. The chef is creative with classic dishes, everything here is always fresh and cooked with love!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful centrally located coffee shop. Latte came out super quick with a cute heart design. If you have a second don't forget to check out the community board with lots of local goings on.

Yelp
We always visit Avalon Bakery when we are downtown. We have never had a bad experience. The food is fresh and always amazing. Bakery items look enticing and we always have a sweet treat that we were not planning to have. Today's treat was a huge slice of lemon strawberry cake. Divine and enough for four-people to enjoy after our lunches. The cafe tables are typically cleaned quickly though the floors could use some attention. The staff are always friendly and the security staff in the area work hard to keep a good vibe going between customers and downtown residents. I appreciate their diplomacy and positive attitudes. Avalon is top-rated for a reason. It is a Detroit landmark.

Yelp
$35 for barely a breakfast meal and dirty lettuce? Not good and kinda disgusting. It was probably our mistake to come here early in the morning the day after Thanksgiving. Not on point today! The egg and cheese sandwiches were ok, a little salty, but edible. The potatoes were not good. Very bland and not to my liking. The coffee was ok, nothing special. What I really didn't like was not having an option for a custom tip (after ordering at the counter), so no tip. I can't justify 15-20% on non-sit-down service. Sorry, not sorry. We'll never be back, mostly because we probably won't be back in Detroit anytime soon. If we are, likely not coming here again for breakfast. Maybe lunch...?
google avatar

Yelp
Really enjoyed Avalon Café!! The eatery is set up where you order your food at the counter by the main entrance, then you take a number and the servers will bring your food to you! They have an assortment of breakfast and lunch options, along with alcoholic drinks and baked goods. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the ambiance was clean and lively!
google avatar

Yelp
Went here because all of the brunch places had an hour wait. Felt like a whole foods- restaurant only vibe. Everything they had was organic and ethically sourced etc etc. I think its a bit more expensive, because of what I just mentioned above. But the food was good. I got the brunch burger which was good. The breakfast sandwich was good. The latte was good. It wasn't limited to coffee and tea, they also served alcohol! Finding a table is the difficult part. We just waited until someone left for a table of four as the others waited in line.
google avatar

Sesa G.

Yelp
I had heard such rave reviews about this bakery so I came in with high hopes. I ordered the chicken sausage, egg, and cheese roll and an iced chai latte. The sandwich was not mind blowing and honestly not work $15. The side salad was the best part of the meal. The chai latte was great and I was happy with it! We also got an iced London Fog coffee with lavender cream foam, unfortunately there was a hair found in that drink so that was off putting. I hate making bad reviews, but I just wasn't impressed with my experience here for the first time other than the iced chai latte.

Yelp
Egg and Cheese: 5/5 - toasted bread was soft and fluffy while toasted just right. The eggs were scrambled well and fluffy. The cheese melted right in and was delicious. Not too salty either. The salad was extra but I felt like there wasn't enough dressing. Banana Nut Chai: 5/5 - my go-to drink here every time. I enjoy sweet drinks and it tasted very similar to a banana nut bread. Potatoes: 4/5 - Potatoes were seasoned perfectly and weren't too salty. Only wish they were a little softer but that's just a personal preference.

Yelp
Long wait on the weekend, 30+ min. Drinks were fantastic. Food was a little underwhelming. But not so much that I wouldn't recommend it.
google avatar

Yelp
Got caught in the rain and dipped in to Avalon and it was quite good fortune. I had the avocado toast with salmon and hard boiled egg (SCORE). Also their chai latte was fantastic too. I'd say the vibe was that of an upscale, extended bakery. Nice food, lots of great big goods and wonderful coffee/cappuccino area. there was lots of seating, and a very clean layout of the dining room. There was also seating outside which was nice...right up until it started raining. It's the type of place that you walk in grab a menu, then order then go to your table and wait for them to bring your food so there's not much in the way of service, but they did get my food to me in a timely manner. I'll definitely come back here when I'm in Cleveland again.

Yelp
Avalon was my last stop on my 24-hour Detroit foodie tour. It was my only brunch spot while in the city, and I truly enjoyed it. The scene was eclectic and relaxed and the service was straightforward and efficient. I especially enjoyed the patio seating. I enjoyed the chicken sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit with a side salad and avocado. Delicious. My sandwich came out good and hot and my salad was fresh. My only critique is that I prefer my biscuits on the fluffier side. However, the flavor was all there. My beverage of choice was the iced dirty chai, which was perfectly balanced and so good. I most definitely recommend and will return whenever I visit the D.
google avatar

Derek P.

Yelp
Slooooow. Ordered an egg sandwich to go and took close to half an hour. And this was before their lunch rush began. Cool spot, nice ambiance and all but I'm not sure it was worth the wait.
google avatar

Diana T.

Yelp
We stopped by this bakery for a boost of caffeine and to get some work done in between our outings. The place has ample seating with outlets and the service was very quick. We ordered a hot tea and one of their seasonal lattes, both were delicious. The bathrooms were also very clean. We weren't hungry so did not grab any food but as we were leaving, we saw lot of people come in for lunch.
google avatar

Marielle M.

Yelp
The bread they use for this sandwich is so good. It's a bit messy but definitely would get it again. I wasn't a fan of the chips, it was just a bit too much garlic for me 1st thing in the morning. The service was also good and there was a lot of seating available. Only thing is it felt too busy on the weekend to eat and get some work done. I'll have to come back on a weekday.
google avatar

Anonymous A.

Yelp
I ordered a half sandwich and soup today. I was told they didn't have any soup (at 1230p) so the salad was the only option. Sandwich was good but it had a ton of old lettuce on it which was not edible. The salad was the same issue as it looked brown and slimy on many pieces. Not a good option for $11.
google avatar

Taylor O.

Yelp
Excellent craft food for breakfast, brunch or lunch. You order everything at the counter and they deliver it to your table. They offer a full cafe including coffee and espresso drinks (with seasonal specials too!) plus brunch cocktails like bloody Mary's and mimosas. They're brunch offerings are my absolute favorite. I love their Sausage Biscuit and the Sausage and Gravy. Their portion sizes are great too- you will not leave hungry. I also love that they offer a takeout option so you can order online and pickup at your convenience. Must try!
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
This place has a wonderful atmosphere with soft lighting and relaxing instrumental music. Semi small inside, but plenty of tables to choose from. Take note that it is more of a cafe style place where you order at the register and find your own seat. I love the location, but parking is a bit difficult. Street parking is available all around it and there are parking lots and garages within walking distance. It just depends on how busy it is at the time whether or not you'll be able to find a close spot. Overall, the food was really good! I think our whole order costed us $35. We were going to get mimosas but those were $10 each, so we decided to skip the alcohol there. The food was definitely worth the price, perfect portion sizes, and very filling. It was honestly very lovely and I would love to go again!
google avatar

Lindsay L.

Yelp
The food and drinks are so good here. The staff is pretty nice but doesn't listen very well and messes up my order often. The sandwiches are delicious but so expensive. Even a BLT is like $15. They do come with chips luckily. The salted caramel chai latte is sooooo good but the pumpkin chai and banana bread chai taste very fake and artificial. It is very busy during the weekends around brunch time and the line is out the door. There is not a ton of seating inside but they do have sit down service.

Sheila W.

Yelp
Didn't expect this place to be this solid! Wanted to take a quick to go for lunch, ended up dining instead :D. Love the avocado toast, it was a perfect party in my mouth. And oh! The cappuccino was also fantastic!
google avatar

Jackee O.

Yelp
Cute little corner cafe in downtown Detroit. I was craving a Club sandwich and decided to try Avalons Turkey Club. It was extremely flavorful. The turkey was tender, the bread was nicely toasted with a layer of sauce and the bacon was thick and crispy. I couldn't have asked for a better club sandwich for lunch. Service was good. Will be back!
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
A very nice breakfast and lunch spot offering top-notch baked goods, breakfast andsandwiches, salads, and a wide range of interesting teas, kombucha, coffees, and lattes. And let's not forget the rotating selection of freshly-baked breads! I stop by whenever I'm in the area (and sometimes when I not really very close at all)! It ain't cheap, but it's totally worth it. There is limited seating and parking can sometimes be problematic, but don't let that put you off! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
Excellent cafe in downtown Detroit. A variety of vegan and vegetarian options, making it difficult to choose. The mushroom toast was excellent- bread was just the right degree of crusty and the savory mushroom sauce was divine. The tomato soup was a bit disappointing- bland and a little bit salty, but the rest of the meal made up for it as did the Bloody Mary! Highly recommend as a lunch/brunch/breakfast spot.
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
Avalon Cafe and Bakery was a fantastic place to go grab brunch and coffee. I had a London Fog that came out great and then I got a special Avalon Brunch Burger that honestly was one of the best brunch burgers I've had in awhile. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone grabbing brunch in the area
google avatar

Celeste H.

Yelp
Great food, service, and ambiance for a brunch spot. We tried the huevos rancheros, and egg, chicken sausage, and cheese sandwich. Both were 10/10! Had a latte, which was yummy as well. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast - huge dining area - pay for the food and grab your own table. They will bring the food to you. The coconut latte was delicious with lots of coconut shavings. I had the biscuits and gravy which came in a unique style but delicious. My friend had the breakfast sandwich with chips and the chips were delicious! Haha I need to highlight the BBQ chips it came with.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
This is a well lit and open dining experience, and the food was great. Visiting Detroit from out of state and we dropped in on a Friday for a late breakfast. The order-at-the-counter service was quick, and our server was professional and friendly. My sausage biscuit sandwich, served with a fresh greens salad, was excellent, as was my mocha latte. Prices were reasonable ($18 all in) for the quality and freshly prepared meal.
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
LOVED LOVED LOVED this litttle cafe. I just had the most delicious blueberry muffin, husband has eggs and toast, but also this place has a really cool vibe. I loved the soft jazz music, the friendly staff and the food is just really GOOD, homemade deliciousness.
google avatar

Leslie A.

Yelp
Avalon has become a Detroit class for a good reason! They are consistent, have a great variety on the menu, and are speedy with the food and drinks! I came here for lunch on Father's Day with my family and while the surrounding restaurants had a 40+ minute wait, Avalon welcomed us in right away and we were able to sit on the patio and enjoy the beautiful weather. I enjoyed the mushroom sandwich which was savory and toasty, which came with Great Lakes brand potato chips. I also tried the beet and pistachio salad which was delicious and piled high with beets. When we were done eating the staff was quick to come over and clear our table and thank us for our business. Avalon is the best!
google avatar

Carolina C.

Yelp
Avalon downtown is a great spot for your go-to sandwiches or fresh baked bread. It truly invites you in from Woodward, and inside had just the same inviting feeling with its large dining room and displays filled with their delicious pastries. Their sourdough has the perfect outside crackle and a fluffy interior with a lot of great flavor. I recently got their Grilled Chicken sandwich that had a delicious avocado sauce that truly made the sandwich. The accompanying greens has a nice dressing overtop, but I do wish the chicken was a bit juicier, but the sauce really did some heavy lifting. It can be a little pricey for a sandwich but they do have an expansive menu with a lot of options to choose from,
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
We were in Detroit recently and accidentally happened upon this little cafe/bakery so we stopped in for brunch. I got the sausage biscuit which was served with egg, cheese & garlic aioli on it and it was great! Served with salad greens with a really yummy dressing on it. There were breakfast, lunch, and bakery options. There were coffee, cappuccino and mimosas too. It's an order at the counter and then sit down kinda place, so I did think it was a little pricey based on that, but very good!
google avatar

Suzy S.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying that this place is a self serve restaurant experience and of course they still had a tip prompt. The girl who was taking our order was nothing short of rude. She looked like she didn't want to be at work and she also didn't offer up any information when asked a question about the menu items and allergy concerns. I won't be coming back
google avatar

Lynn H.

Yelp
I walked into Avalon bakery because I had forgotten my lunch on my first foray into work after more than a month. The friendly counter person assured me that my carry out order could be ready in 10 minutes and so it was. I spent a pleasant 10 minutes on a bench near the counter watching other patrons come and go, all getting good service. My order was indeed ready for me in just a little. Under 10 minutes. I got the mushroom toast, which was absolutely delicious. It was a piece of sourdough bread covered with a savory cream sauce that held not only mushrooms but also spinach. And the whole was topped by a sunny side up egg. My lunch was still plenty warm when I got back to my office about 5 minutes from the bakery and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
google avatar

Albert K.

Yelp
Great food, hip vibe with a Panera level of polish. I was dedicated patron of their original location, but have to say that I prefer the actual food from this location. The reason being, they are able to serve food at a consistent heated temperature throughout. So finally the food tastes as good as it looks.
google avatar

Marin C.

Yelp
They sell the cultured kombucha from TC. I love it, yay, supporting other Michigan-based businesses is walking the walk and talking the talk. Only after I had ordered- chicken sausage and egg sandwich with challah bun (yum), did I notice there was an earl grey scone. Bummer. Will hope they still have it on the menu if I get back here someday. The breakfast sandwich was filling and really tasty. Sausage patty a bit thick. But better too thick than too thin, lol. Taste and flavor were great though. The greens on the side were a nice touch. The strawberry rhubarb kombucha was a hit outta the park, of course. Cheers.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
If you want quality, great tasting food, this is the place! Had an egg, bacon, avocado sandwich with their bread, chose side salad. It was incredible, the egg perfectly prepared, crisp bacon, well....it was so satisfying!! Girlfriend enjoyed her seasonal soup and avocado toast too!!
google avatar

Rachna P.

Yelp
Cute little cafe in downtown detroit! I would say the service here was 10/10. On a Saturday morning there was a line but our food and drinks were brought out super fast. They have lots of different vegetarian options which is always a bonus! Along with breakfast/brunch, they had some festive goodies including pumpkin muffins and cookies and fresh bread. While parking and seating was a little bit tight, i still thoroughly enjoyed my experience hWill definitely be coming back to check out their cocktails and baked goods!!
google avatar

Clinton C.

Yelp
Went here the morning after the MCR concert and it was really good! I got a load of bread sliced and Togo! Everyone enjoyed the food and the chicken sausage Pattie's were amazing! I loved my food and the strawberry rhubarb jam I think was great! Only complaint was that for two eggs scrambled I got a way smaller serving then my friend who ordered the same thing I had maybe 4 bites and he had at least 10. Outside patio is near construction right now but still a sunny area to relax:)
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
The food was fresh & healthy. I got the Ruben sandwich. It had a special Sriracha 1000 Island dressing. I will never eat 1000 island dressing without Sriracha ever again! Brilliant.
google avatar

Isabelle H.

Yelp
Stopped in for coffee while in town for the weekend. Local coffee shop feel with plenty of space to sit and work but doesn't feel big. Friendly baristas and great drinks! Had a brown sugar sea salt latte and oat milk latte!
