Been staying at this property for nearly 30 years, also been a vendor for Marriot for over a decade so well aware of the concessions that can be made to accommodate guests, and none were taken during our week reservation on Christmas week. We were kicked out and had our reservation cancelled for our Christmas vacation because this pet friendly hotel allows dogs, but not our five month old, less than 5 lbs baby kitten.
Management stated that our kitten was more of a risk than a loud, potentially damaging dog. Tried to also tell us it was an allergen issue, yet people with dog allergies are not considered?
They could have easily done some investigating and realized that not only is our breed one of the most hypoallergenic of all cats, but at 5 lbs she is also silent, and still has her baby teeth and baby coat, and is basically harmless in all ways possible. Instead a blanket policy of “Yes Dogs, No Cats,” was applied at this failing hotel. It’s worth noting that we had already checked in, and were headed to the pool with no problem from the front desk who petted and held our kitten during the check in process before a manager then kicked us out.
Other messes at the Avalon:
1) no more valet. Guests are now left to fend for themselves.
2) no welcome beverage upon arrival.
3) messy and dirty lobby with stacks of boxes behind the check in window.
4) unprofessional looking staff with no uniforms.
5) zero holiday decor.
Everything happens for a reason, and we ended up getting a gorgeous large bungalow with a private patio at The Colony Palms for our tiny family member. Valet carried our bags, we were greeted with a glass of champagne, and there is a gorgeous Christmas tree in the lobby with professionally dressed staff. Literally a perfect welcome for our whole family.
Needless to say, the Avalon has lost its magic and after over 30 stays at the property since it was the Viceroy in the 1990’s… we will never be back. This situation could have absolutely been avoided in the name of customer service.
If you’ve stayed here before, you’ll be shocked like we were to see it looking so poorly, run down, and sub-par. If you’re an animal lover, you’d also love to hear how this now run down property treated two loyal guests on Christmas. What a mess.
We are thrilled to be at The Colony Palms instead. We suggest you take our advice and do the same.
