"It’s possible every food truck this side of the Mississippi started putting curry inside a Cal-Mex flour wrap once this restaurant in Sausalito launched its Punjabi Burrito in 1989. Curried garbanzos, herb salsa, carrot pickle, tamarind sauce, and yogurt folded into a whole wheat wrapper make for a dish that embraced fusion cuisine and lifted it to a new place well before Instagram. The gluten-free samosa plate and Punjabi enchiladas are somewhat more modern additions to the menu." - Christina Mueller

I happened to stumble across this restaurant while in the area and they did not disappoint! The flavors are wonderful, I have yet to try any type of Indian fusion until then and now I can't stop thinking about it. I had the Smoked Eggplant Punjabi Burrito and the Mustard Green Spinach Tofu Punjabi Burrito. The lentil soup was also quite good, however for $10 a cup I'll pass next time.

I really loved this place. I got the lamb rice bowl that had a variety of flavors that complimented each other incredibly. Of course the mango lassi and chai tea we got hit the spot, but The Dream was an amazing end to the meal and the best dessert I've ever had. I already know I have to get more before I leave town. Definitely recommend!

- Went as a group and we got to try several of their burritos. - Food is fusion of Desi and Mexican cuisines and was pretty good. - Conveniently located with parking nearby. - Self service. - They accept cash or Venmo

Went for a hike in Mill valley and had lunch from this restaurant. I really liked the food, it was simple but a balanced plate of flavorful food.

Google
Small and nice place for Indian style food! Portions are average but taste was good! Liked that they are eco friendly and use steel plates for serving! Spinach tofu and spicy curry vegetables are for vegetarians! Rice bowl- 4/5 Curry Vegetable Burrito- 3/5 (Roti wrap wasn’t fresh)

Google
Incredibly flavorful! Can’t wait to go back. We had the jerk chicken and the curried sweet potato with chicken. Neither disappointed! It was a great and filling meal after a nice hike. Awesome beverage selection too!

Whenever a friend comes to visit, I recommend Avatar’s Punjabi Burritos! Great options for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free (if you get a rice plate). The chutney is delicious too! I often go for a burrito with curried veggie & curried pumpkin but opted for a rice plate with curried veggie & smoked eggplant this time- new favorite! Beautiful presentation & balance of flavors. Saru, who runs this location, is also so friendly and welcoming! I plan to keep coming back here and recommending to friends. Head’s up: you’ll need cash or venmo to pay. Also the restaurant is tiny so I usually order to go and take food on a hike/picnic. There are 2 tables inside and 1 outside.

Google
Wow! Great food, great service, in a beautiful location. Who could ask for more? I got the pumpkin curry with lamb rice place. It was so good and a heathy portion as well. I love that it was more than just the rice and curry. The sides of dal, chutney, and more really made it special. I’ll definitely be visiting again!

Yelp
Came here after a long hike at Mt Tam, and wow the food here really hits the spot! My friend has been here a couple of times before and recommended I try the mustard green tofu burrito. There is a blend of so many flavors inside: the mustard greens, tofu, fruit chutney, rice, pickled carrot, etc. Each bite is savory, rich, and fulfilling. The clever usage of Indian bread around to hold it all together is such a good decision/idea! I've had Indian Pizza before, but haven't ever had an Indian burrito. Avatars Restaurant does just the right twist on a classic staple! Low key going to plan future hikes to Mt Tam just so I can come back here to try more of the burritos and the plates. Heads up: cash or Venmo only! And the seating inside is limited, but creates a nice cozy vibe. Service was quick, and you could tell from the interactions with the customers that this place is a beloved hometown classic as well as a worthwhile stop for those passing through.

Yelp
Yummy burritos with an Indian cuisine twist. Yes, they offer the same meals in plates instead of burritos as well, but I got the burrito! They only accept cash or Venmo, no credit card! Got the curried pumpkin burrito with curried lamb and a curried lamb burrito. I was not expecting ground lamb for the meat, I was hoping it would be shredded lamb at least. However, the curry did not disappoint, lots of flavor and good portion of meat. I felt the burrito was missing something, like a fresh flavor or crunch. While eating the burrito, I thought it would be great to have some type of crunch like fresh or pickled radish inside. To my surprise, there were some pickled carrots way at the bottom of the burrito, for both burritos. Also, would have been great to have some fresh herbs or a cream sauce to go with the burrito, that would make it 5 stars for me! Overall, a tasty burrito, but could use an upgrade and more even portion of ingredients inside the burrito!

Tatian G.

Yelp
We tried the curry lamb burrito, curry lamb burrito with sweet potato, the roasted eggplant burrito, and the blackened veggie burrito with salmon. All of the burritos were similar in profile: flavorful but mostly one-note. The lamb was tender. The burritos had a lot of rice which hides the other ingredients a bit. The fruit chutney was a nice addition in terms of sweetness and texture variation. But the burritos needed yogurt (we didn't see any) and cilantro or something to offset the singular curry taste.

Yelp
Avatar's is probably one of the best restaurants I've visited in the bay area since a long time. If anyone is visiting Sausalito/Marin County, this is a must visit - I cannot stress enough! It is a quaint joint very close to the Sausalito boardwalk. We were hosted by Mr Ashok who was very excited to know that we are vegetarians and offered to decide what we would like the most and we loved the whole spread! The whole spread was vegan, and very light yet flavorful- Saag tofu was actually made with leaves of sweet potato plant which was mind blowing. The enchiladas had a taro filling, and were topped with curry sauce which had an amazing balance of flavors The ravioli was stuffed with tofu and methi, and the sauce was nice and tangy. We were extremely happy with the personal attention we got, and since the restaurant wasn't super crowded, we were served pretty fast.

Yelp
Food was delicious. I had a lovely open faced chicken tikka masala burrito. The ambiance inside is just ok. We sat outside on a picnic table but they didn't have any heaters.

Jo L.

Yelp
Curry chicken in the burrito was dry. Otherwise flavor was good. Pumpkin was good. Food came out quick. Would give this place a second chance.

Nazia A.

Yelp
Very homestyle flavor. Food was really good. Wish the seating area was better but the food made up for the lack of ambiance. Definitely would come here again for a quick stop lunch, or maybe to go!

Maria F.

Yelp
Delicious!!! Quick, friendly service, great location. It's a messy "burrito" made from what I believe is makki di roti, loosely wrapped around a delicious, in my case, roasted eggplant and lamb curry with rice. Ugh. So good! The dessert was such a lovely, surprisingly refreshing treat! Rich cheesecake consistency, topped with pistachios and served with some kind of fruit sauce. 5/5! Great spot for a quick delicious meal!

Yelp
I haven't been to Avatars in a number of years as my wife doesn't care for their food. However, I used to love it, and since she was out of town, I decided to go grab some dinner there. What a disappointment! It did not resemble the amazing food that I remember from Avatars. It was bland and and barely edible. I would like to think it was just an off night but it's gonna be a while before I give it another try.

David S.

Yelp
I love Avatar'sI have been a fan since they opened and I find myself returning every time I'm back in Mill Valley. If you like Indian food, then you have to try.

Isabel L.

Yelp
I visited Avatar's with a group of friends after a hike in Mt. Tam because a few in our group had been there previously and highly recommended it. The staff were very accommodating and were able to seat our group of five without much of a wait. The ambiance was pretty standard, but nice and warm on a cool night. Our server was very kind and explained the menu to us, but also emphasized that we could kind of "DIY" a meal if we wanted to. We shared the vegetarian samosa plate and paratha with chutneys. I had two Pubjabi enchiladas, one with beef and one with chicken. It was fine, but nothing to write home about. I think that the menu is very creative, and I like that they blend cuisines that are not typically fused, but to me the food was just ok. I would recommend to try if you are interested in the novelty aspect, but I probably won't go again.

Matteo C.

Yelp
Kind people and convenient setting. However, the amount of meat and vegetables should both be increased substantially to be called a "plate" at $15 - a sprinkle of lettuce and radish, and a sprinkle of meat, topped over a bunch of sauce, rice, and a few garbanzo beans does not warrant a "$15+ plate." Situated on a nice quiet street.

Audrey M.

Yelp
So delish I love the chicken plate with mustard greens, and the papadam - also super nice owners

Christine W.

Yelp
Always excellent. I've been going here for 25 years. One of my favorites is the Punjabi burrito with veggie and salmon. The level of spice and vibrant flavor make it just perfect. Thank you for being there all these years!

Hemanth G.

Yelp
Cute little Indian restaurant run by owner Ashok in Mill Valley. They have another in Sausalito as well. After hiking up Mt. Tam ventured to this place for some hot chai and some food recommended by my hiking buddy. Tucked in a quite street in downtown with outside patio dining options, the quick service and food was tasty. Although to my palette, spice level is little mild catering to local community. I had their salmon plate with rice, my friend had special roti and mixed veg curry. Had nice brief convo with owner Ashok about recent celebrity cricket sports players guests from India (Sunil Gavaskar, Kirmani, and others) and about politics in India. Check it out if you are in the neighborhood for some Indian cuisine and chai!

Dyanna Q.

Yelp
These were a delicious end to our hike on the Dipsea Trail. They're right at the entrance along a quiet street near downtown. We ordered the chicken and lamb burritos. The "tortilla" was thick and delicious and the filling was flavorful. It was enough for two meals! I also ordered a rose lassi but should have stuck to the mango. There's no seating outside so make sure to dress warmly for the outside tables. We enjoyed our first "Punjabi burrito" experience!

Imran H.

Yelp
Came here with some friends after a hike and ordered the Chicken Curry Burrito. It was okay, and probably could've used a bit more spice/flavor. Unfortunately it gave both me and my friend pretty terrible upset stomachs afterwards. Our other friend got the lamb burrito and he had no issues, so hopefully was just a one off, but I probably wouldn't come back here.

Yelp
We passed this spot on the way to the Mill Valley Library on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. My roommate and I, being Indian, knew we had to stop there for lunch hehe. They have limited outdoor seating and indoor, however I suggest the outdoor when it's nice out. The owner and staff were very friendly and nice. They take venmo or cash only I believe, so be prepared for that. We all got the curried chicken burrito, which is basically chicken curry mixed with rice, chickpeas, and some veggies all wrapped in a roti. It tasted very homemade and authentic in my opinion, a very satisfying meal for lunch! Portions were decently sized, I definitely had leftovers. It was too hard to eat it as a burrito cause everything was slipping out but I ate the rice with a fork and used my roti like normal instead of trying to eat it like a burrito.

Matthew C.

Yelp
Going to look past the cash only part since a lot of other reviews have already mentioned. Got the chicken curry "burrito". It was extremely good. Would come back again if I'm ever in Mill Valley

Grettel L.

Yelp
I'm sorry it's gone. Hands down to one of the best options to get food at in mill valley

Bob F.

Yelp
Very tasty, fresh food delighted us here at Avatar's Restaurant. We were graciously greeted and served right away. The prices and portions make for a good value. My stepson and his family love this establishment and now my wife and I do as well!

Mads R.

Yelp
Cash or Venmo only. Great burritos, a little greasy but the spicing was on point. Treasure hole in the wall spot

Uday B.

Yelp
Was I disappointed? No, I was 'appalled' by the exorbitant price ($14) and the poor quality of the burrito. The burrito consists of a poorly packaged roti wrap with some not so great mildly spiced eggplant or meat with rice. I can bear bad customer service/ ambiance if the food is even half way decent. Mind you, I didn't expect bay area Indian food standard although it's priced that way. The concept sounds decent but the execution is unfortunately a huuuge letdown. There's so many flavours you could experiment with in an Indian burrito but alas. Oh and one more thing, it's only cash or Venmo- FYI. I rarely write reviews but the fact that this place is rated 4+ on Yelp has me concerned and feel obligated to correct it.

Alex J.

Yelp
A burrito fusion restaurant? SIGN ME UP! Avatar's is located just off a very lively downtown Mill Valley. We visited prior to going back to the SF peninsula on a weekday and it was still quite crowded in the area. All parking is metered from what saw. I ordered the punjab burrito with curried lamb and seasonal veggies. The lady who took my order was very kind and was thankful for our order. When our food was ready, it was hand delivered to us (we were sitting on the few small tables outside the shop). The burrito was very flavorful but I was surprised that it was ground lamb instead of chunks of lamb. The food was made fresh and would definitely visit again!

Jeffrey A.

Yelp
Prices keep going up here and the servings stay about the same, perhaps even get smaller. I used to love this place, but $15 for an average sized burrito? I just can't stomach that any longer.

Adrien G.

Yelp
Such flavorful food with great quality ingredients Seating both inside and outside Fairly fast service considering there are 1-2 in the kitchen and they are taking multiple orders and that the kitchen is small Variety of options, vegan friendly Only take cash

Diane W.

Yelp
A unique place for a quick bite. While roaming around Mill Valley, my fiancé and I were looking for a place to settle down for lunch and the concept of Punjabi burritos intrigued us. We both like Indian doors and burritos so we decided to check this place out. Make sure you have a few bucks because this establishment is CASH only. You order in the front and they deliver your food to you if you sit on the outdoor patio or you can take it to go. I ordered the curried sweet potato which was delicious and instead of a tortilla, it's wrapped in roti bread. They have a lot of options for drinks like Snapple, apple juice, bottled water and sodas, my fiancé and I both got orange cream sodas. If you just want water you can ask for a cup for free. Great concept and fast service makes this a place to go for people looking for a quick and filling meal.

Sunny S.

Yelp
Is this place connected to the other avatar's in Sausalito? If so, I will not be going there. Food was so subpar! And the woman makes you feel like she's doing you a favor. What a turn off in both the food and service. Would NOT recommend. If your tastebuds are that of an old Caucasian, then perhaps the food may suffice, but then you would not tolerate the glum looking face making your food..

Heather C.

Yelp
Amazing, healthy food! we loved our rice plates with pumpkin/grilled veggies and salmon. what a treat! a We ordered it mild, and there was just enough spice!! The chai teas were delicious and we split the almond gelato pie with mango and rose petal drizzle. What a treat, and such nice people. So affordable I could eat there every night. Well be back!!

Harrold V.

Yelp
The burritos here are to die for. Amazing mix of Indian flavors and texture in a naan wrap. Great taste and great owner too.

Sondra H.

Yelp
My friends took me here after a long hike. This hit the spot! They serve Indian food burrito style or in platters over rice. Burritos are a Punjabi style parath with rice, curried garbanzo beans, sweet pickles, dal - and your choice of veg or protein. Here are some choices I remember: Sweet potato Chicken curry Lamb curry Mustard green saag Mixed veg Smoked eggplant I had the mustard green saag. Man, it was good! A little messy but it will be gone before you care. Just get some extra napkins. I had a mango lassi. My friends had the rose lassi. It was pretty and pink. I'll try that next time. I want to go back now.

Beatrice Z.

Yelp
A small hole in the wall Indian restaurant with great service and amazing food. We ordered a veggie and chicken plate and pumpkin with chicken plate and everything was super delicious. The lady at the counter was efficient, hospital bowl, pleasant, :-). Made the whole experience. Very nice. Outdoor seating Was also very nice

Madhava C.

Yelp
Punjabi Mexican fusion didn't feel like a great combo but once I tasted the food, I realized the flavors are still pretty authentic. To their benefit the Aunty who makes the food there retains a lot of the flavor but still makes it healthy. The portions disappointed a few of the folks but my spinach tofu hit the spot! The vegetarian rice plate was a bit meh.

Marina B.

Yelp
Interesting concept! The food was good and the service very friendly! I thought the Punjabi Enchilada was a fun idea and quite enjoyed it. There was a lipstick stain on my glass and a hair in the curry though..

Bob F.

Yelp
My wife and I were a little hangry after a nice hike, and finding two restaurants closed that said they were open on their website (updating your hours cannot be that hard!). Fortunately this place was right next door to one of them. The smell drew us in. Mixed Veggie Burrito: 3.5/5. I enjoyed having a burrito encased in Indian bread and the veggies had a nice flavor. Overall it was "pretty good", but I would like to try other things in the menu. The woman behind the counter was very nice, and while there are not a lot of tables there, the street outside the restaurant is pretty quiet, which makes for some nice outdoor dining.

Michael V.

Yelp
Super disappointing ate here Before and was impressed with the flavor of the food. This time around I paid 14.50$ for a curry chicken burrito and I also asked for 2 mint chutney the man gave me one and said that's all he could give me. I opened my food and my burrito completely fell apart and as I tried to put it back together it just became a mess. The food had almost zero flavor and ruined my first meal of the day. I don't think I'll return

Devi K.

Yelp
The wraps all have rice, chana (garbanzo beans) and veggies wrapped inside a roti. There are several options to add either extra vegetables or meats - we added smoked eggplant. The wrap was delicious - it really hit the spot. It was seasoned and spiced very well and that made all the difference. I've had Indian burritos before and they've generally been either too bland or filled with too much rice. This one was well balanced, with great flavors and bold spices.

Heidi M.

Yelp
Great vegetarian options. Delicious! Small walk up counter with outdoor seating. Quick & easy.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
My significant other and I were stopping by after a lengthy and arduous hike closeby. We both love indian food and were stoked to try this fusion. We both ordered and shared the curried lamb and curried chicken. When the food arrived, we both took a few bites and were surprised that it was all undercooked. The rice and potatoes were extremely raw and felt it was boiled for likely a few minutes max. We both ate the entire thing out of need to refuel but appalled this place has quite the high reviews. This was a first to eat outright raw food. We will definitely not return to this place again. I was very surprised to see the popularity of this place.

Mandy P.

Yelp
I just wanted to let everyone know I haven't lived up north since 2009 but my mouth still waters and I dream of their food. Yeah it was that good I can't wait until I can visit again. I will make a special detour to get my Punjabi Burrito

Farrell S.

Yelp
Stopped in here today for the first time. It smells so good! Very good, friendly service, and the best Jamaican jerk chicken I've ever had in my life. I'll definitely be back.

Angela J.

Yelp
The food here is so good. My only wish is that they would open up in Burlingame. They would be so successful there!

Aakrati K.

Yelp
Fantastic vegetarian burritos- we tried green mustard aka saag burrito and blackened vegetables (charred essentially) and both tasted really good. Charred veggie one was a little oily while chai tasted more like Starbucks chai latte. Must try for Indian food lovers.

Jason P.

Yelp
What a fantastic idea: Indian Burrito. I asked the owner how long the restaurant has been around: 25 years! Wow. And here I never knew this gem was in Mill Valley. First off, they had options of mango, plain or Rose lassi . I tried the Rose lassi, and it was superb! Light, ephemeral after taste of rose. I recommend it. For lunch I tried the Curry pumpkin curry chicken burrito. Imagine wrapped in whole wheat Indian bread: Curried garbanzo beans Basmati rice, Fresh herb salsa, Chutney, Carrot pickle, and Tamarind sauce. The combination of flavors was amazing, and I look forward to trying more of their menu. They also had rice plates (not just Indian burritos), so if you're in the mood for a plate instead of a wrap, you can have that too. I look forward to going to Avatar again.

Sam H.

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood treasure! Great food, reasonable prices and tables outside or in on a quiet street. This has been here for so long. A high quality and value meal.

Merry B.

Yelp
Sanitation Issue. SO unfortunate. Was truly looking forward to taking out some Indidan food. The owner greeted me promptly and was friendly -- however -- the same hands that was handling plates and money, dirty cash money, grabbed a somosa without washing his hands. Then he tried to convince me that he was a nutritionist, and there was nothing wrong with it. As an immunousppressed person, I was not convinced. He asked one of his assistants to make the somosas. They were overpriced and oddly flavored, (and I have had several thousand Indian meals, from many regions). The lassi tasted watery, and frankly the worst rose lassi I had tasted. The whole experience was disappointing. If you care about food safety and hygiene, skip this restaurant.

mary g.

Yelp
The place is nice inside and outside they have a little patio with picnic tables. The food was so so. I ordered some fusion type chicken dish that just didn't hit the spot and it was somewhat expensive for lunch. It felt like a neighborhood type place with friendly owners and not a destination unless you work or live in the area.

Dietrich K.

Yelp
Food flavors are always amazing here, you can never go wrong. The only reason i cant give it 5 stars is because the burritos always fall apart and sometimes its dry.

Rainbow U.

Yelp
A fun, nonchalant, CASH-purchase stop for a quick food fix- most menu items are pre-cooked, Indian food counter style, the 'fusion' that customers reference is due to the plated presentation of a burrito or enchilada. Rarely is there a wait- whether in line, or for your plates. Select a drink or two in the fridge. Eat at the humble few tables, or take your food to go. I have stopped here for food for years and have always exchanged niceties with the family and others behind the counter. I have FaceTimed with a cashiers family overseas as she took our order. Always good vibes! No rsvp needed, you'll see why; you are in, pleasantly fed, and you are off to traipse the streets of Mill Valley without a hitch to your Dipsea-hiking schedule! If you crave a more restaurant-y vibe, with a more expanded menu, take a short drive over to the Avatar's restaurant in Sausalito.
