The Best Restaurants in Sausalito | Eater SF

"If you live in Sausalito, you already know about family-run Avatar’s, which has been serving California-ified Indian food since 1989. The menu blends Mexican, Indian, and other global influences meaning you can order Punjabi enchiladas stuffed with jerk chicken along with a side of samosas. Just save room for Avatar’s Dream, a specialty dessert of almond gelato cake with chocolate, pistachios, mango, and rose petal sauce." - Dianne de Guzman

Incredible place, and the host is quite the character. Friendly and great service. This place has been around awhile and serves fresh farm to table dishes expertly crafted and inspired from around the world that are as unique and creative as they are delicious. If I had the ability to give them a Michelin star I would. Oh and get the dessert.

Google
The best!!! Excellent service!!! The flavors are like no other. The dessert... you will not find it anywhere else on the face of the planet. I've been a fan over 30 years. Kala and Ashook ... always great to see them. They are the original owners...with the late Avatar.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I was excited to try this hyped restaurant, but unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to expectations. The prices seemed fair at first, but once I received my portions, I realized they were much smaller than expected for the price. I had sampled the food, but then they charged me for a full-sized dish, which felt misleading. Another downside was the manager – while it’s nice to check in with customers, the manager was too talkative. He came to our table three times during the meal, which was more disruptive than pleasant. Overall, I think there’s room for improvement in both the service and portion sizes. It wasn’t the experience I was hoping for, especially with all the hype surrounding it.

Probably one of the most astounding meals I’ve ever had. The owner of the restaurant is honestly incredible. The food is immensely healthy yet tasty. So light! But so delicious. He cooked us a custom vegetarian dish. Coming here was a whole experience lol

Google
I've been going to Avatar's for a little over 10 years and it has never disappointed me. I highly recommend the Punjabi Enchiladas and Avatar's Dream dessert.

Wonderful fusion of Indian and Mexican dishes and service from the waiters and owner is excellent.

Google
A unique experience of fusion Indian cuisine. We had the enchiladas, and ravioli. It was a perfect blend of Indian , Mexican and Italian flavors. It was a great dine-in experience thanks to Ashokji. He guided us through the whole menu and helped select the dishes. A definite to go place for those special occasions. A five star experience.

Google
I don't know why I've waited this long to share one of my favorite restaurants. The food is incredible -- different and adventurous in a really good way. I love the punjabi enchiladas, samosas and grilled shrimp. The service is always great. The owner and staff are truly grateful for their customers and try to establish a relationship with them. To me, that's why I give them a 5 star rating on atmosphere. It is a casual place but you always feel appreciated and welcome.

Yelp
Great food and service! Very warm, welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend. The menu is Punjabi fusion. There are Mexican fusion dishes, like the Punjabi enchiladas. These are very popular and quite good. You can choose almost any kind of meat or veggie (except pork), and you can specify how spicy you like it. We chose spicy shrimp, and they were delicious! We also split the yoghurt chicken, which came out looking more like a mole or a curry because of the cashew mango chutney sauce. The chicken was incredibly tender and delicious. The veggies were wonderful. Both dishes came with basmati rice with peas. So soft and fluffy, with a hint of saffron. Loved it! Also, we started with samosas, which were crunchy on the outside, filled with tasty potatoes and peas on the inside. So good! My friend and I ordered sabe cocktails, which was the only thing we did not love. Ashok (the owner) came to greet us and answered all our questions. While we considered what to order, Ashok was chatting away with locals who have been coming to Avatar's for years. He seemed to know their families and favorite foods. So nice to see! Parking is easy to find in the lot, especially when Bank of Marin is closed. Very cozy seat set up, mostly tables for two. Overall, enjoyed this place and will be coming back. I wish I had discovered this place much sooner.

Yelp
A good go-to in downtown Sausalito, especially if you're into spicy, bold flavors. The portions are decently sized. Staff is friendly and helpful. *SERVICE* We didn't have a reservation but were warmly welcomed by the staff and seated immediately upon our arrival. They checked on us often and were quick to clear our plates as we ate. *FOOD* We had a party of 2. Everything sounded good so we decided to share everything. I generally like spiciness and found mild to be the right heat level. - Soup du jour (soup of the day): Lentil soup was one of the better ones I've had at a restaurant! It was simple but very flavorful. All their soups are vegetarian. It came with a side of paratha bread, which was gluten-free. - New Zealand Lamb Curry: This was my favorite dish. It was tender and flavorful, with hints of spice and citrus/tangy. Served with a side of rice that complimented the meat really well. - Jerk Chicken Enchiladas: Really tasty as well! Had tons of flavor. I enjoyed the fusion approach. Also came with a side of rice. - Mango Lassi: I'm always a fan, and this one did not disappoint! They also had a rose petal flavored one. *PARKING* Plenty of parking in a lot that's shared with a few other businesses including Bank of Marin. *AMBIANCE* The restaurant has diner vibes. You can probably fit ~50-60 people in there comfortably. The tables are amply spaced, so even if it was full, it won't feel too tight. They also have a decently sized outdoor space.

Yelp
We stopped by for dinner after a day in Sausalito after reading the good reviews! The owner is very friendly and charming. He greeted us and started off with, "Are you ready to eat the best meal of your life?". Let me tell you, I think this is far from it. It's a very acquired taste - a fusion of Indian, Italian, and Mexican. We ordered the Rose Dream Raviolis, the Fettuccine, and the Samosa Plate off the menu. The owner made up 2 off-the-menu items - essentially the Raviolis in a curry sauce and the Punjabi Enchiladas with a 'special vegetable mix' made of pumpkin inside. The raviolis were in an Alfredo sauce with a sweet rose/mango sauce on top. There were 4 single raviolis for $20 - I don't mind paying for good food, but I wasn't a fan of the cuisine mix. The curry sauce in the ravioli and the fettuccine just tasted heavily of garam masala. I will say, the Samosas were very good and my parents were fans of the off-the-menu Punjabi Enchiladas they made. The staff is very friendly and there is plenty of parking. I just didn't understand the appeal and I personally wouldn't be back but you might like it if it's your acquired taste.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a great place to stop when seeing the sights. I highly recommend. The owner was very attentive and enthusiastic.

Yelp
Wow! What an awesome night out to dinner! Thankyou Yelpers for helping me find Avatars! Excellent service, Excellent food! Omg! Let me tell you about the food..First it smells amazing..I really wanted the dish everyone was posting, that is (Not) a menu choice..sad..Guess what? The owner, he makes it special for you. Heck yeah! I had Blackened veggies and chicken, over Basmati rice and I loved every last bite of it.. My guy had The Trio with Chicken, Lamb and Shrimp, the curry sauce taste so good.. We finished up with a piece of Avatars Desert Pistacio something..shared..This restaurant was different, welcoming, warm, personal.. We will definitely come again.. I hope you like it too! Thankyou to the awesome owner(s) at Avatars for making our dinner so special..I get the feeling it's a daily occurrence for everyone that visits, and I love that..It is appreciated, and made the experience not just any outing..Thankyou

Yelp
A close friend of mine suggested Avatar's for dinner when we were in the area as she has a number of dietary challenges and they have a very accommodating menu. The staff was very nice and service was fast and friendly. If you like spicy food this is the place for you. I love and eat spicy food regularly but I asked for Medium hot as a gauge, and this was pretty high on the heat level. So err on the side of caution if you're not a spicy food lover. Everything was very good and I would stop in again if I was in the area. Parking was right in front and very easy.

Yelp
I'm usually skeptical about fusion food, but we had a delicious diner at Avatar's and I'm looking forward to going back again. Immediately after sitting down, the waiter (the owner?) greeted us and enthusiastically told us that we were going to have the best food ever. I was amused but still skeptical of his bravado but honestly I did have the very best enchiladas ever. I had the lamb enchiladas and they were perfectly spiced and super tasty. Highly recommended!

My wife and I went here after I found it on a list of best restaurants in Sausalito and read that it was a fusion Mexican/Indian place: Food- we ordered the

Yelp
Avatars is a hidden gem of a restaurant. They are known for their "Marindian" (Marin + Indian) fusion food. The owner Ashok is one of the nicest people who I feel in my heart truly enjoys creating food, owning his businesses and making a good impression to invite you back. Ashok asks "Are you ready for the best food you have had in your life!?" We ordered a few appetizers to share..the veggie samosas, the mushrooms and the blackened jumbo prawns. The flavors are bold, fresh prawns, it gives you a glimpse of the entrees to come. Both of us ordered two things off the menu which was fish (grilled and curry). We also ordered the chicken curry over rice and a plate of their crab enchilada. Let me tell you..the food was truly excellent! From the freshness, large portions, Indian fusion flavors (they also ask what spice level you want so you can go as hot as you want!) to colorful presentation, you cant go wrong with any dish here. I did notice that everyone's entrée had rice on the side and my plate in particular, the fish and veggies got loaded on top of the rice so my rice was soaked and soggy. It's a small thing but was really looking forward to getting bites of basmati rice (not wet rice). The dessert is a MUST TRY! They only have one which is the Avatar's Dream. I would come back over & over. So glad to try this gem!

Grover F.

Yelp
Wow! I've heard the food here was great but the actual firsthand experience exceeded my expectations. The presentation was superb, the quantity just right, and the flavors exquisite. The menu selection, while not extensive, appeared deliberate so as to provide focus on quality, presentation and taste. The service was likewise top notch and the ambiance, both inside and outside, perfect. The gentleman in charge, whether owner or manager, was friendly and welcoming. Avatar is a fantastic restaurant to take friends and family or just yourself for a special culinary treat.

Yelp
Wonderfully pleasant and friendly owners. The framed picture is of the owner's husband. So cute and heartwarming. We came here for our anniversary and enjoyed it very much! Food was excellent!

Yelp
Every time I come to Avatar's restaurant the owner is always welcoming and friendly to everyone. I can immediately tell that the owner cares about customers and he is passionate about the food. I have a special transitional seafood dish (I cannot stop thinking about it). All dishes are so unique and unforgettable :) this place is considered one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to. Strongly recommended for anyone who is craving for something unique Indian dishes!

Yelp
PHENOMENAL Marindian Fusion food! =) Bf and I will always keep coming here. This is the BEST Indian Fusion I have ever tasted in my whole life!!! We always go to this location in Sausalito when it doesn't rain because we like to take our dog out and sit at the patio area. The ambiance of the restaurant is like I feel at home. Beautiful, comforting and very JOYFUL! Ashok is a very smiley, happy and witty guy. I love his jokes!!! He is always happy to please and goes above and beyond for his customers or if it's ok to say friends =) I always order the Jamaican Jerk Chicken Plate $21.95+: -"This receipe comes straight from Montego Bay. Chicken breast tender marinated in authentic Jamaican jerk sauce. Served with basmati rice and fresh grilled vegetables." I always have to eat my veggies so this is my go-to plate. LOVE IT!!! Bf always orders the Jamaican Jerk Chicken Enchilada plate $17.95+: -"Enchiladas are made using corn tortillas, lightly sprinkled with jack and cheddar cheese, home made curried enchilada sauce, yogurt and tamarind sauces. Served with a bed of fluffy saffron basmati rice and fresh green peas." Mango lassi $5.95+ is absolutely refreshing, real sweet mangos and clouds of yogurt. YUM!!! I need to start trying other entrees soon. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! Usually, I can't finish indian food without feeling sick but for some reason I can eat so much of Ashok and his family's food! It's warm, spicy for a kick, soft, tender, dancing flavors and textures all over my mouth. MADE WITH FULL OF LOVE, PASSION and DIGNITY! I have so much RESPECT for Ashok, his family and everyone by his side to serve these delicious meals. PROSPERITY and more BLESSINGS to come, my FRIEND =) Happy Eat's ya'll!

Yelp
Wow. All I can say is that this was one of the most memorable meals during our trip to San Francisco. We had spent the morning exploring Muir Woods and the plan was to hang around Sausalito for a bit. Thanks to Yelp, we found this extraordinary little spot and arrived just before it got too busy. You had me at Indian fusion, but the focus on healthy, fresh ingredients is apparent with every dish. We started with a fabulous lassi, shrimp in fresh chutney and vegetable samosas. Perfection all around. Then we shared the pumpkin enchiladas and a wonderful dessert before calling it quits. The manager was a big part of our great experience. He was so excited to introduce us newbies to this wonderful restaurant and the pride in his cuisine oozed out of him. We saw many regulars arrive for lunch-which I would be if I lived nearby. Go eat here!!!
google avatar

Loreto D.

Yelp
I want to give this place more stars but it really is just OK. I appreciate the interesting combination of Mexican/Indian fusion but it just didn't work for me. The server surprised me with the crab pumpkin enchiladas but I couldn't tell it was crab at first. I thought the rose petal lassi was going to be refreshing but it wasn't. I didn't finish it. The chai seemed watered down.

Yelp
Just a sudden adventure on a trip out to Port Reyes, gosh was I glad I stopped The owner came and made recommendations that were so good. Had the gluten-free vegetarian samosas - my non-gluten-free husband was chomping them down too! Followed by the enchiladas, Indian style, did a mix up sweet potato and chicken, and we cleaned the plate Highly recommend!

Yelp
Came here after a nice day out in the Marin. Good: - Superb service - what a kind staff here! - Food came out SO QUICKLY - it was honestly so impressive how quickly they were able to bring out each entree as soon as we ordered. - The mango lassi here was incredible - really good pair with the mild spicy food - The best samosas I've had in a while - the texture of each bite was impeccable - The enchilada was so so tasty and the sauce it came with was really good - Tasty soup and paratha - loved just picking and eating at the paratha Bad: - Wasn't a big fan of the chicken curry - it was a bit dry and also really just chunky - More of a causal ambiance so nothing special about the interior design Overall this was a great place to go and so happy we found this on Instagram reels!
google avatar

Gail M.

Yelp
Rose Mango Dream raviolis were incredible and my lunch mates loved their Crab Enchiladas! We shared the special pistachio-topped dessert. All three of us had a very good freshly-made chai. It was ALL excellent! We hadn't been there since ore-Covid and were pleased to return and to find the food just as delicious as we remembered! Perhaps most amazing though was the same Indian owner treated so sweetly and hadn't aged one bit! It must be all the incredibly healthy ingredients in the food there!! We will return soon.

Meghan C.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place! It's clean, has attentive and kind service, and the food is really good! Got both the jerk chicken enchiladas and the curry chicken. Both were tasty and felt very comforting. Would recommend coming here if you're in the area!!

Yelp
Attentive service by the proprietor, excellent recommendations off an unfamiliar menu. Food was excellent.
google avatar

Sev C.

Yelp
Upon arrival the owner already set the tone for an intriguing dinning experience. We started off with paratha accompanied by a trio of delicious pairings. My partner and I met in the middle with the spice level of 8. The jerk chicken enchiladas were beyond amazing (our fav dish). The New Zealand lamb curry was tender and flavorful. We balanced out the meat dishes with the roasted mixed veggies spiced to perfection on top of saffron basmati. I recommend dining outside on a nice night.
google avatar

J R.

Yelp
The Food was delicious. As for Service the best anywhere I have ever been. Ambiance is quaint and local vibes galore.
google avatar

Mukhambika A.

Yelp
I came here with my family. The samosa dish and shrimp curry were our favorites. The seasoning on the shrimp dish was very very good.
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
This is now one of my new favorites. Great, friendly services! I can't emphasize that enough. They make you feel like family and make dining there enjoyable. Their food is spot on! Everything is delicious! The samosas were fresh and crispy. The mango milk shake is nice and creamy with fresh, sweet mango. The ground lamb enchiladas is a fantastic combination of Indian flavors. With so much sauce, it's great at the end to mix with the rice to get all of it. They can adjust the spicy leave, which is appreciated. And their dessert is good, where it's not too sweet and light. Inside is a little tight, but they have a nice outside dining area in front. If going for lunch, get there early to avoid the rush.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service with a smile, and a very engaging owner. Fresh food delivered with a little spice. A nice gem that unexpectedly gave a nice lunch experience. Worth the extra mile to go visit and eat something out of the ordinary. Price point is very good and the staff will expertly guide you through the menu selection. A nice surprise as I happened to walk by, but my next San Fran visit will make this a mandatory Stop @ Avatar. Thank you

Yelp
Food: 5/5 We ordered the soup of the day, chicken curry, and the Jamaican jerk chicken enchiladas. The food was flavorful, tasted fresh, and it was served nice and hot. The spices were warming in that great homey way. I really loved how tender the chicken was, and the saffron rice was delicious as well. Service: 6/5 The two gentlemen at the FOH was extremely attentive, speedy, and kind! We were seated immediately on a Saturday night. My partner and I were tired and hungry after hiking at mount tam and wanted a hearty meal in town. The manager (?) was so quick to attend to us, and the food came out extremely quickly. The food was great, but the service is what really makes this place worthwhile. Ambiance: 5/5 Nice and cozy, and not too fussy. It was clean and friendly inside. Family friendly, and great for a casual dinner. Overall: 5.5/5 Great service, flavorful and hearty food, and clean. Would visit again if I'm in town!

Yelp
Cute restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating close to downtown Sausalito! The owner was so nice and had super fast service. We ordered a mango lassi, Jamaican jerk chicken enchilada, and the Jamaican jerk chicken plate. I was blown away by the flavors in the enchilada! Never have had a meal like this, it was delicious. Our only complaint was the plate was a bit small for the price and we finished not quite full. But for the flavors in that meal, it was mostly made up for :) Would recommend stopping by Avatars!
google avatar

Prakash N.

Yelp
Unique flavors and unique ingredients. Don't go here if you are looking for "run-of-the-mill" menu items. This is a vegetarian-friendly restaurant. Sometimes, the owner says, "Let me bring something that you will like". The service is quick and the food does not disappoint.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
This is a cute fusion restaurant with a very friendly owner, who waited our table. I came in a group of 8 people and he was attentive to each of our needs. He has a long spiel about the restaurant in the beginning. He also asked us for spicy level on a scale of 1-10, which applied for every dish. I ordered the Jamaican Jerk Chicken while the rest of my table ordered enchiladas. All of the enchiladas look the same from the outside. The portion sizes are on the smaller size, but overall the food was pretty good. However, it seemed that they used the same curry to top each of the dishes. We also ordered samosas for the table (not pictured) which were very good, including the gluten free samosas. I would recommend if you want to satisfy your craving for something unique!
google avatar

Cicely R.

Yelp
Hands-down best Indian food I've ever had, and it's one of my family's favorites. The flavors are wonderful, and the dishes are creative. A really good one? Punjabi Enchiladas! The restaurant itself is small, and it's a bit of a walk to get to the bathroom. The service is quick but not pressuring in any way. On my first visit, we were told that their dessert, Avatar's Dream, is the best thing we will ever eat. Of course I was skeptical, but I gotta say, that description is not wrong. Do yourself a favor and at least try this place out!
google avatar

Ash B.

Yelp
The food and service are always top notch when we visit. A very unique rendition of Punjabi fusion cuisine!
google avatar

Jacob M.

Yelp
Must try: their fusion burritos Why visit? It's a very cool concept, and the only reason I subtracted a star is because I think the portion size is a little small for what you pay for, but overall I think the flavor is very nice Protip: try their chai!
google avatar

Yelp
Few restaurants can pull off being a second home for their customers. It takes a welcoming presence, genuine warmth and healthy delicious meals. Consistency and happy staff are important too. Their food may not fit everyone's taste due to spice and complexity but it sure fits mine. Avatar has all this in spades if you pay attention. Today it looks like Ashok, host and owner, know 95% of the customers coming in. That's pretty typical. I hope you will become one. Their usual Wednesday before Thanksgiving thank you to their community and all comers of a free enchilada meal was nixed by the city but the happy spirit is still alive. Next year I hope. Read other reviews about the food. It's one of my all time favorites and unique in its genre...I always recommend the enchiladas and rice plates but there's much more. Enjoy!
google avatar

Sheena M.

Yelp
The owner is the most enthusiastic restaurateur I've ever come across. He greeted our table personally and asked us our food preferences. He then made personal recommendations--mine was a surprise. To our delight, my boyfriend and I both loved our meals. He ordered the Jamaican Jerk Chicken and mine was "off-menu." It was clear the dishes were made with love and intentionality. But the best part for me was the dessert. It was a gluten-free and sugar-free (agave was used instead) pistachio gelato pie of sorts encircled in fresh mango and raspberry sauce. My tastebuds were literally dancing! If you want a truly unique experience and to taste food made with love, go to Avatars!
google avatar

Jeri A.

Yelp
I wanted to really like this place. We stopped by for lunch and my friend recommended we eat here. I ordered chicken curry. The portions are adequate, however, everything tasted so bland. At first I thought it was just a few bites, but as I had more, there really was no taste. We had come close to the time they were closing for the afternoon. As soon as our food was served, the server had asked us to pay. Even if I wanted to say anything, there was no one to give feedback to. I unfortunately probably won't be coming back :(
google avatar

Rima P.

Yelp
Great service and amazing food. It was very unique and the owner was so passionate about his food. I highly recommend the lamb enchiladas and the curry trio. Make sure to try the avatar dessert!
google avatar

Sujay S.

Yelp
This restaurant was really good. I was traveling in NCAL on vacation and looked up vegan in the area and found this place. It serves non vegetarian but I am vegan. The food was really good. The flavors were amazing and very healthy. Low oil, no gluten, no white flour is used. Instead all natural grains were used for the tortilla and the samosas I had. Also had the chai and butter milk. Owner is Indian and greeted us and said I will place your order. Price was high but this was very exclusive. That is the parking lot loaded with Bentleys and AMG cars to come here - to give you a sense of the clientele. I sat outside on a beautiful day. I also had a dessert which was very good too. Like a cheesecake but middle was mawa topped with pistachio, and chocolate type base and mango ras dressing. I bookmarked this restaurant and will return next time I am in the Bay Area. Highly recommended.

Yelp
If you want 4$ meals found at Michelin star Indian restaurants like Junoon at a 2$ restaurant in Sausalito, with very good car, parking in the front, come to Avatar.

Yelp
Okay here we go, Services is exceptional, no doubt about it. They don't take reservations but since we are coming from Peninsula they took us in. Take note we're a group of 10. There's also another group who reserves by the name of John so when we got there, they keep asking if we're John's group lol but I told them no. They asked us if we want to dine inside or outside so we chose the inside. We started of with some drinks and appetizers while waiting for the half of our group. 3 masala chai $5.50 each, 1 gluten free samosa (2 pieces) $9.95 and 1 blacked jumbo shrimps (3 pieces) $14.95. Once our friends comes in, they order 2 beer, 1 IPA, 2 order of the Blackened Jumbo Shrimps. We also ordered 2 margaritas and 2 palomas but we got 3 margaritas and 1 paloma. So our other friend reminded them about the the other paloma. We also started ordering our entree. We got 3 Jamaican Jerk Chicken that has 3 pieces of meat per plate for $21.95. 1 Yogurt Marinated Chicken that has 3 pieces of meat as well for the price of $21.95. 1 Rose Mango Dream that has 4 or 5 pieces of ravioli for $16.95. 3 enchiladas for $17.95, 1 Trio Basmati $19.95, 1 Trio Curry for $24.96. They helped us with the birthday cakes and stuff which is cool. We gave them the remaining cakes for them to enjoy. My friend paid $700 dollars all in all including the tip for 10 people. I asked for the itemized bill and they gave me the paper which is uploaded in here. Upon checking it. I noticed some discrepancies with the menu price and actual charge. So I'm like okay, it's not that bad, then I see that there's a $14.95 charge that we don't know as well as the $96. I'm like thinking it's probably the 20% Gratuity/Service Charge. Then I saw the white receipt. The green receipt (itemized) the total is $571.50 but on the actual receipt it's $574 plus the tax of 10% ($53.10) so the total all in all is $627.10. So my friend paid $700 including the tip. My issue with this is, first, they didn't tell us that they include the service charge already which is the $96 on the green paper. Second, the prices are not correct per menu. Third, the price for beers are not in the menu or wine list so we have no idea how much was it. Fourth, the meal portion. 3 pieces of white chicken meat for the price of $21.95 I won't tell you guys not to try this place, the taste are great but just expect this things to happen. Service is somewhat great/exceptional, I mean nobody's perfect you know lol The prices/charge- they need to be better with communicating or showing if the food prices will be based on market value lol also I don't like how they got us, I feel like we were scammed. We would love to add more tip even without hiding the fact that you guys already included the gratuity/service charge. So that's why I'm giving them 3 stars only. 1 star for Ambience, 1 star for taste and 1 star for service.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my quick lunch today at Avatar's in Sausalito! I heard about Avatar's from Marin Magazine's "Best of Marin Restaurants" where Avatar's was featured as the Best Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant in Marin County. While I'm not vegan or vegetarian, I really enjoy healthy and thoughtfully prepared food so as I was driving by and saw their signage, I decided to stop in for a quick bite. After reviewing the menu, I quickly discovered this isn't your average Indian restaurant. The dishes are a unique fusion blend of Indian, Mexican, Caribbean and Asian influences. I couldn't really decide what to order, as I'm a creature of habit and always order the same thing at Indian cuisine restaurants. I told the kind female server that I usually order Palak/Saag Paneer and she said they could make it. It was the best and most flavorful rendition I have had in the bay area. I frequently order from Lotus and have ordered from Bombay Grill and Amber Kitchen on delivery. I also order from Indian Palace sometimes as it's a convenient location on my way home to Tiburon. Avatar's version was the best. I ordered it with a medium spice level, accompanied by slightly blackened fresh vegetables and basmati rice. The rice was perfectly cooked and not over-flavorered with too much saffron but just enough to get notes of its vibrant flavor. Ashok explained that in their version of the curry doesn't include dairy or cream and is oil based using bean products. Totally wow, a healthier version of the dish that tastes better! Normally Indian restaurants put curry in an oval shaped dish that makes it appear larger, so when the plate first arrived with the curry and rice on one traditional round plate, I thought it was a smaller preparation, but it wasn't and the portion was perfect. Ashok also just prepared a Daal Curry for a takeout guest and brought a small sample for me to try it the next time I visit. He explained that all dishes are made-to-order and they don't pre-cook large portions to serve like many other Indian restaurants do. The curry was also excellent, but I like spinach curry over cauliflower/lentil curries (re: creature of habit). I ordered the same dish again to-go to enjoy for dinner. I was surprised the restaurant wasn't immediately packed at 11 on a Friday like other restaurants in town with the food and service being so excellent. Go to Avatar's -- incredible!

Yelp
Food and Service was excellent. Only reason for 4 stars is for no hooks in bathroom. They are so easy to install. Who likes to put their stuff on floor of bathroom.

Yelp
Avatar's Restaurant provides a more upscale experience from Avatar's Burrito while still bringing great Indian fare with a little international fusion. Located off a small plaza in Sausalito, Avatar's Restaurant has a small cozy feel. And when you enter, the feeling that you are part of the family becomes apparent as the host who welcomed us was friendly and accommodating. After getting recommendations from the host, we tried the following: 1. Vegetarian samosas: While I have had many samosas, this was definitely one of the most beautifully presented. The lightly fried pockets of potatoes that were nested on a visually stunning mix of yogurt, tamarind sauce, and fresh mango puree that provided a little freshness and tanginess. 2. Jamaican Jerk Chicken Punjabi Enchiladas: As expected from Indian cuisine, a nice mix of spices married together to create a wonderful taste experience.  However, the Hispanic influence was apparent as it was packaged in that fried tortilla giving a nice crunch. Plus, it was smothered with the curried enchilada sauce which we requested for spicy so it definitely packed a flavor punch! 3. New Zealand Lamb Curry: This was a very solid curry dish with nice pieces of lamb that also packed a bit of heat. Nothing as special as the other two dishes and would have wanted the lamb a little more salted. The service was super attentive and friendly. My only major negative was that it is a little on the pricey side. As much as I enjoyed the food, it is definitely more to save for a special occasion. There is plenty of parking in the lot. Overall, Avatar's Restaurant has great food and service that makes it worth a visit if you are in the Sausalito area looking for quality Indian food with a little twist.

Yelp
Amazing fusion place! Everything on the menu looks amazing so it's hard to choose. I had the Indian enchiladas with chicken. Our table also tried the enchiladas with salmon and beef. Every single version was so tasty. The flavors are so fresh and poignant. The dessert is advertised as healthy, vegan, and one of a kind. It is definitely all of those things! I still prefer traditional Indian and Mexican desserts but it's most definitely something you've never tried before.

Yelp
We had the lamb enchiladas, ground lamb dish, and the Avatar's Dream. The lamb enchilada was good for what it was but the lamb was very heavy and I guess lamb and cheese do not pare well for my taste buds. I would not try it again. However, my guest loved his ground beef lamb dish so no complaints there. AND my favorite was the dessert. It was creamy with just enough sweetness. I would go there just for the dessert. Service was very good and the owner was so incredibly sweet.

Yelp
We were traveling up from Southern California (Laguna) and happened to stumble upon this oasis on Yelp. What a find.... The owner and his family helped us out by welcoming us enthusiastically and then proceeding to order just the perfect meal for us. We tried a little bit of everything in this cozy, Sausalito restaurant and each dish was better than the one before, capped off with a delicious dessert. I cannot say enough good things about the restaurant and family... this will definitely be on our must visit places during any of our visits to SF. Highly recommend the Dungeness crab enchiladas as well as any of the seafood curries of seasoning in the jerk sauce. Also, parking is free, easy, and plentiful...always a plus!
