The Fight for L.A.’s Street Food Vendors | Eater

"A once-enormously popular night market in Lincoln Heights that served as a major vending hub, it was shut down without warning in recent years, forcing vendors to disperse to other, less visible locations and making it harder for regular customers to find them." - Zoie Matthew

City of LA Shuts Down Avenue 26 Market in Lincoln Heights - Eater LA

"The Avenue 26 Night Market was a popular evening and weekend event located on Artesian Street in the industrial area of Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. The market drew large crowds eager to experience open-air dining from a variety of vendors. Although it became a massive attraction due to social media and post-pandemic eagerness, it faced challenges such as lack of regulation, illegal parking, and public safety issues, leading to its closure by city officials." - Farley Elliott

Been wanting to come here for a while now since we see it all over IG. Disappointing! $10 parking and over priced food. My son ordered Buffalo Chicken Fries from Ur Wings and they guy didn’t give him all of his change back. Either he can’t count or he took advantage of a kid. The only food that’s worth mentioning that we tried is the Pupusas. Worth the $4. However, their taquitos are literally fried tortilla with nothing inside of it. Let’s not forget the .99 hotdog from Your Homies Little Dog (or something like that). Definitely NOT worth the $14! Don’t waste your time here … go to a restaurant!

Great food and variety, prices were reasonable and big portions, good entertainment for everyone in your family, would visit again.

Let me de-influence you. Especially if you come from the Instagram ads. Come here if you want to eat over priced food with the flys in a dirt lot. They put some fabric on the floor to minimize dust but be prepared to trip. They don't even tape the edges. Truly a tripping hazard! Parking $10 Entry is NOT free!! $5 a pop The "wide variety of food" is 90% taco trucks all offering the same basic food items, notable exceptions were the fish taco stand($6/Taco), Japanese chicken, and birria stand. It was about 12 food vendors and some merchandise vendors. Smaller than an indoor swap meet. I don't recommend especially if you are bringing your family. Take that money and spend it at a nice restaurant in the AC, no flys or dirt, and get a full sit down experience. Don't recommend!!!!

Google
Best night market in pico Rivera sports arena totally recommend going so much vendors to look at and the food different choices to choose from Also recommend visiting the vendors at Los Charms they have so many things to look at starting with the croc charms so many options designs to get and their other accessories Saturday 4pm-11pm Sunday 11am-6pm Come for the fun and stay for the vibe.

Google
Parking is $10, we order the quesabirria tacos. Took over 30 minutes to get our 5 tacos. The meat had no flavor, tortilla was cold, and super soft. ( quesatacos supposed to be crunchy.) On top of the poor quality food, they are rude. Specially the older lady. Would never go there again. Ave 26 on Imperial it’s smaller, but way better.

Loved the food couldn’t make a picture since I ate it.

Tacos were excellent with a variety of salads and toppings

Google
Food was good, slightly overpriced. $7 Agua fresca Fresca..and that's a regular cup. It was ok. $10 parking. I don't know if anything really stood out. Tried the squid on a stick 3/5, the BBQ ribs 4/5, the pozole 4/5, carnitas tacos 5/5, Al pastor burger 3.5/5, cheesecake in a cup 5/5, hot cheetos esquite 4/5 and chocolate covered strawberries 5/5.

Yelp
Tons of food stands and merchants! I was a bit disappointed in the food selection but I bet there would be more food stands during the spring and summer. We got papas fritas/potato tornado, buneulos, tacos, watermelon agua fresca, and birria. There was live music while we were there next to the beer garden. Many stands take zelle so bringing cash isn't necessary. Parking is $10 though.

Yelp
Ave 26 Family Night Market is one of the two spin-offs from the original Ave 26/Artesian Night Market in Lincoln Heights (shutdown by the city in August 2021 - the other market is called Ave 26 On Imperial close to Downtown LA). [Hours]: Every Saturday from 5 PM to 11 PM. Fridays will be closed in summer 2023 as the organizer wants to focus all energy and resources on a single day. [Parking]: $10 per vehicle. Confusing parking entrance with another misleading "parking" entrance, but the entrance is not right if (1) no one is collecting $10 and (2) visitors should not be driving on a dirt road. [Activities]: Currently the night market offers the following activities - free bull rides from 5 PM to 6 PM, free slime shop for the first 20 kids at 7 PM, free face painting from 7 PM to 8:30 PM, music performance from 8 PM to 10 PM, and clown show from 6:30 PM to 7 PM. [Vendors]: Admission is free, but please note that this night market has a security guard and the guard will check bags for all visitors. As the name implied, this is a "family" night market so do expect to see naughty d-cake. Our party came at 6 PM and most vendors didn't have crazy long waiting lines. There are slightly less food vendors here comparing with vendors at Ave 26 On Imperial. About 20% of vendors were selling accessories at the entrance. Some examples include: # Birria World # Two Six Kitchen (quesadillas) # Local Fish Tacos (tacos de pescado y camarón) # Carnitas Estilo Michoacan Ave 26 (carnitas tacos) # Tacos de Canasta "El Rey" (tacos de canasta aka basket tacos) # Tacos Dorados La Gringa # DragonFire BBQ (Asian skewers) - no waiting line # Tacos El Champ (TJ style) # Chiky Pancakes # Unknown boba stand # Valerie's Apples (candy apples) # Unknown pupusas stand # Unknown soul food stand # Unknown pizza stand *** Carnitas taco from Carnitas Estilo Michoacan Ave 26 ($5): Surprisingly delicious with flavorful pork. Asada and al pastor tacos from Tacos El Champ ($3 each): Probably the least expensive tacos visitors will find here - both tacos were pretty solid. Pupusa (pork and cheese with tomato sauce + salad - $4): Honestly it was the worst dish I had for the day. Pupusa and salad didn't taste good salad and tomato sauce was ... sub-par at best. *** While the night market is certainly family friendly, Ave 26 On Imperial or Night Market El Gato are much better options for anyone who's looking for more foodie options.

Yelp
terrible market! parking is a mess. the location is disgusting. the bathrooms were falling apart and full of feces. the people were wasted. the vendors were all selling the same items, there was no variety. the staff was unprofessional. they allowed a tattoo shop in a canopy by the main entrance... does not sound safe to me! parents leave their children unattended. this event should be banned. i miss the ave 26 taco stand that was in lincoln heights. those were the days when the tacos were $1 and the quality was amazing. their name shouldn't even be associated with the horrible night market.

Yelp
Came here right before they are technically open (4:50ish pm) but sooooo glad we did! We were able to park right by the entrance (they closed it off soon after so you would have to park just a bit farther). Parking was just $10, since we were early, there wasn't any change for a $20 but we luckily had exact change as well. We decided to do a round of the whole place before deciding on what to eat. It wasn't crowded at all just yet, there were no lines and only a few people walking around to the different stands. There were games (water guns and mechanical Bull for example), shopping (clothes and jewelry), but we were there mostly for the food. There were a good amount of places to sit down for us but I definitely think it would be harder later in the day based on videos I've seen of how crowded it can get once dark out. We ended up getting 2 pork and cheese pupusas, 1 bean and cheese pupusa, and 2 agua frescas (pink dragonfruit looking one and horchata from Martha's Kitchen. The pupusas were $4 each and the drinks were $7. The drinks were huge!!! Well worth the price and very sweet and delicious. The pupusas were fresh and crispy on the outside. Not a ton of filling but what was there was delicious and flavorful. After sitting down and eating, we got up again to get hot Cheetos esquites from this esquites place (sorry, forgot the name). They had a whole table of hot sauces and condiments you could add too, including my fav Valentina's and even hot Cheetos dust. The esquites were hot, creamy, spicy, and cheesy. We got the small portion for $5.50. After sitting and eating again, we decided to get tacos from Tacos El Champ. My boyfriend got 3 asada tacos and I got 2 asada with 1 chorizo. The tacos came with 2 types of salsas, onions, and cilantro, they also had a station to get limes and radishes. Each taco was $3. The asada was a little over cooked but well seasoned and the chorizo was perfect. We also decided to get 1 more agua fresca from Martha's kitchen to drink with the tacos and it was our favorite, strawberry horchata. Overall an EXCELLENT experience, well worth the 1 hr drive from the valley and worth the price of everything. It probably would have been more stressful to go later in the day when the crowds are there but maybe next time we'll stay a longer. We left by 6:30 pm and it had already started to get busier. Will definitely come again!! Maybe will try the one on imperial street to to compare, but this experience was easy and rewarding.

Yelp
Food is ridiculously expensive and the service is soo bad. Is all about collecting as much money as they can. Food is not about taste or quality. Is about how fast can u make it and get the money. Very sad

Yelp
The ads make it look much larger, but I think there was enough selection and random knickknacks. Tried quite a few vendors and all were very good!

Yelp
sigh, I should've came on here before falling for the IG hype. to start, they charged $10 for parking on a Saturday night - not sure if it matter what day you go. Then, we got a michelada and charged us $20 for each - I paid $40 for 2...Crazy. if the gentleman would've told me the price beforehand best believe I would've not ordered one but they were already made so, yeah. The only good thing about this trip was my tinga quesadilla I ordered which was $8 - not too bad. This experience bummed me out because i Love that their doing this to help vendors however, these overprices will not make me come back.

Yelp
I came back for the first time after the pandemic and lemme tell you everything sucks. Usually the more ghetto and nasty it is the better the food but this is beyond disgusting and some of the best vendors back in the day are no longer there. I am not paying $5 a taco when there are way better ones out there for less. Very disappointed and I really hope the organizers look into this issue.

Yelp
This place has great atmosphere, it's like fair style with yummy food explosion. I really don't know where to start? Foodie heaven! From carnitas tacos to Nutella filled mini pancakes this place doesn't disappoint. We didn't have trouble finding a spot to sit down to eat, plenty of seating options. Wear some comfortable shoes and lose clothing because you will be leaving this place full and pleasantly pleased.

Yelp
I was in the area and heard about this place so decided to stop by and check it out. When you arrive to the area you'll have to pay five bucks for parking. Which isn't so bad since you don't have to pay to get into the arena. Make sure you bring some cash cause not all places take card. There's lots of different foods and desserts to try. I had the fire oven pizza which was really good. I also had some carnita tacos which tasted pretty good too. They also have taco, churros, mini pancakes, agua frescas and so much more. If your in the area this place is a must try. I'll have to make my way down here again sometime. They have music and a play area for the kids as well.

Yelp
Loved this market! Had a great selection of food, and super cute jewelry and had a little bit of Everything. Was really sandy so make sure to wear shoes and not Sandals. Not bad pricing either!

Yelp
This place was a fun experience to check off our San Gabriel Valley bucket list. The vendors are typical but tasty...you gotta try them all to find your favorites. Plan to spend between 60-80 dollars for a family of 4 if you are just going to eat. There are also vendors and some kids activities. I wouldn't plan on the kids having a good time if they're betting on games, inflatables, etc being there. There's also mostly dirt and uneven pavement...so watch the little ones who are learning to walk. They have music and the crowd is mostly parents with kids or teens. Last, to everyone complaining about paying $10 for parking and overpriced food, like Fergie says, "if you ain't got no money, take your broke ass home". Overpaying for parking and food in SoCal is like going to the beach and getting sand in your ass-- it's bound to happen.

Yelp
Honestly thought it would be better but it so small and not much at all to me it was boring food was ok but would I go again no I wouldn't

Yelp
Been wanting to come here for a while now. My husband always sees IG posts so we traveled an hour to get here. Super disappointing. $10 parking and over priced food. My son ordered Buffalo Chicken Fries from Ur Wings. They guy didn't give him back his full change. Either he can't count or he just took advantage of a kid! We figured we might as well try many things while we're here. The $14 hot dog from Your Homies Dog or (something like that ), is a .99 hot dog with a bunch of toppings. Don't waste your time. The only food worth mentioning that was good was the Pupusas. Those were worth the $4. The taquitos they serve on the other hand didn't have anything inside of them ... literally fried tortilla and nothing inside of it ‍

Yelp
me and my family use to go here when they first opened. honestly, just save your money. it use to be just $10 parking and free entrances, now they charge you $15 to park WITH and additional $5 per person. then the food went up almost half the price, quality for sure went down.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Very good variety of food. The pupusas were amazing! And the taquitos were too. The agua fresca was delicious!

Rolando O.

Yelp
What a gem, if you want to indulge in sone good eating, this is the place to be. They have a plethora of food and drinks, candy and desserts. Parking is easy, they have a bar with amazing mix drinks and beers. They have little shopping stands from toys to shirts, makeup and a bunch of other goods.
google avatar

michelle l.

Yelp
It was ok. They need better direction on their parking lot. But we had a good time. Maybe I'll take my family of of these days
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
It was just okay. I was expecting more vendors. The parking is huge but they charged me $10 and I heard others say they were charged $5. Not sure what's up with that. The place was crowded and really loud. There was a dj on one end, and two bands playing on opposite ends. Entrance was free. The food was just okay. We had the bacon wrapped hot dogs and they were not good at all. I'm glad I went but I don't think I'll return.

Juan G.

Yelp
Excellent service and had a great time. The value in the food was very cheap. I would definitely go back and visit. The selection of the different type of food and drinks were unmatched.

Yelp
I've followed Ave 26 Fam Night Market on IG for some time now and finally fit going with another foodie friend. I was a bit disappointed since I expected a little more than the Ave 26 on Imperial. There were many vendors for desserts, drinks, different kinds of tacos, birria, pupusas, street dogs, tamales, and more. There's a lot of insects flying around so it was hard to enjoy your food. The pupusas were the worse I ever had, there was barely any meat. Nice and friendly people through out the venue.

Yelp
Pretty cool spot to come on the weekends to pick different spots to eat , walk around and hear music too. Can in hopes that Soul mex both would be open but they were not here, but these choices were great.
google avatar

Lorena C.

Yelp
The food wasn't good and the prices was ridiculous expensive. 2 tacos of carnitas for $10 dollars and I ask for carnitas and the had buche mixed with the carnitas. 4 taquitos dorados for $14 they said they were chicken but I never seen the chicken. The drinks were $5 each and had no flavor. The only positive thing I can say was the mini pancakes.

Giovanna C.

Yelp
Great food and lots of fun. I've only rated it four stars because the lines were ridiculous. Food was pricy, but most night markets hike up their prices so that is nothing new. Line-wise, waited over an hour to finally order at the popular stands. Very much worth it, but it is a pain and takes from the experience. Another bummer was that their Instagram page will not reflect what they are currently offering. Three or four hit stands on the social were not present during my visit. It would be great if the group that organizes this event puts a list of present vendors.

Yazmin L.

Yelp
Hope vibe! Dope experience. Seen this all over Tik tok, we were looking for some Mexican food and desserts and this was the perfect spot. We got there a bit later they close at 11pm and we got there a few minutes after 10pm so we walked around the whole spot before ordering anything and when we finally wanted to order many spots were selling out. Hot dogs were good. Agua fresca was good. We got 3 pupusas and they already had them cooked so they just reheated then and the outer parts were hard when I ate it, so I would request fresh ones ooor i don't know get there earlier ? They had little shops too a lot to look at. Croc charms for $1. Cool place to visit ! I would go again but earlier then 10pm!

Simon S.

Yelp
I keep reading parking is $5?.. I got charged $10.. I got a tall can beer as soon as I got in.. $20.. the fk? Ok ok... The churros and the Enchiladas mi choacanas and tacos where great! alot of card readers didn't work..but I brought some cash.. I expected it to be bigger and more options. I drove 35 mins because I saw it on Instagram.. it was ok but I dont think I will be driving there again
google avatar

Irms R.

Yelp
staff is friendly, food is good, variety of options to choose from, variety of vendors, could use more seating and bathroom upgrade, and pavement in some areas.

Peter A.

Yelp
It was my first time coming to ave 26 Family Night Market. I paid $10.00 for Parking. Then was told that the parking was $5.00 but didnt get a refund. On Instagram it shows that theres a lot of vendors and food stands, But tonight there wasnt much to see. Food was kind of pricey with limited seating. Overall my experience coming was bland. I was really hoping to have a better experience.
