"Avedano’s may look like an old-school butcher shop thanks to its historic space, but it’s got a new-school, humanely raised meat ethos. Their panino sandwiches are an excellent introduction to the establishment, and they’ve also served up some hot items during the pandemic, with shepherd’s pie and chicken pot pie to fight cooking fatigue." - Caleb Pershan, Becky Duffett

Google
One of the best chicken salad sandwiches I’ve had in a while. Chicken salad - well flavored, big chunks of rotisserie chicken The bread was crunchy in the outside but soft in the inside -> it didn’t cut up my mouth

Justin Collaco

Google
Excellent butcher shop and really good customer service. The sandwiches alone are phenomenal and affordable. Make sure you get your card punched. Highly recommend getting the Hoff Hot Sauce. Check the specials. I've never had a bad experience here and always make it a point to buy something when I'm in the neighborhood.

Google
Classic no frills butcher shop with a focus in sustainable meats - heaven. My sandwich was so good that I came back next day and bought two more for my travels back to Atlanta. Looking forward to my next visit.

Ayşegül Yönet

Google
It's a small shop where you can get fresh paninis, including vegetarian ones. Turkey and pastrami was really good. The bread is so crunchy and yummy too. There is a nice coffee shop next door and a park with San Francisco view a block away.

Google
I just moved to the neighbourhood somewhat recently and discovered Avedano’s. I’m an extremely avid cook and having easy access to a butcher and meat this quality is game-changing. The staff is fantastic, always incredibly friendly and helpful. I’ve placed special orders three times now and it’s been such a positive experience. I’m looking forward to coming back weekly for all my protein needs. Also, get the Smokey Moe. The sandwich changed my life.

Google
High quality butcher shop - although it’s got a great neighborhood vibe this one is also worth going out of your way for. Everything is great, including some of the house made sauces and sides. Sandwiches are also delicious

Gary Withey

Google
A long time local establishment, and a neighborhood butcher shop that you can feel good about supporting. High-quality and conscientious in their approach, they also make some of the best pressed sandwiches around.

Dor T

Google
Sandwiches are great here. Super friendly staff. Love going here for some tiny fish to switch it up. They even have treats for the fur baby.

Yelp
This place is honestly one of the best things about living in Bernal. Once you start buying meat from Avedano's it's hard to go back to Whole Foods without noticing a significant difference in quality - especially for streaks, lamb chops and such. They make the best sandwiches in the city too. The butchers are kind and helpful, and the service is always attentive.

Michael L.

Yelp
To got the lamb sandwich and the meat was tender and the bread was perfectly crisped! The flavor was a little mild for my taste but I still enjoyed it and would definitely come back to try another sandwich. It was a great quantity as well - perfect for a lunch that doesn't over fill you. The guy working was super nice too, he said his favorites were the meatball and steak so I gotta go back and check those out

Kyra P.

Yelp
BEST STEAK SANDWICH EVER! Found this place with a friend a while back and can't stop going back. They have a steak sandwich that is to die for. That's all I can say. Besides get there early because they'll sell out! :)

Kelly L.

Yelp
I rarely eat meat but when I do I get it here, and it's out-of-the-way for me. The quality is superlative, the sourcing impeccable. They also are well-stocked with fine pantry items and make sandwiches. It's very clean and organized. Service is excellent. Simply the best.

Lawrence N.

Yelp
I support businesses in Bernal and don't exaggerate on my reviews of anything, but the pastrami sandwich I had at Avedano's recently was truly terrible. 90+% of the pastrami was literally inedible (very little meat, lots of unchewable connective tissue, and too much fat). My guess: perhaps I got an unusually bad sample of their pastrami--a true outlier--but who knows?. No photo...I'm not going to display little piles of glop that I tried valiantly to chew.

Yelp
Wow didn't realize this place was women-owned--nice surprise! Hubby's been frequenting this place, as it's the best butcher shop we've found in 5+ years, ever since our stint on the east coast. Workers know their meat, prices are decent, and convenient to grab a good sandwich for lunch at the same time. I always prefer bavette--it's a leaner choice of meat that's tender (as long as the place you get it from is good, like here!), and the price tends to be more reasonable. Hubby loves getting merguez from here to make shakshuka. I haven't been here in a while (ever since COVID-19, I've only been inside any establishment less than a handful of times!), but it's funny that a picture I posted years ago included my hubby, and a client of his actually recognized him as "that guy from Yelp"... and it took us a minute to realize what they meant because he doesn't post anything.

Yelp
REVIEW ONLY FOR THE SANDWICHES. I hate to be the one to rate a locally owned shop lower than 4 stars, but I think I have to. I came here with high hopes of tasting a delicious sandwich, but was left quite disappointed. Ordered the porchetta sandwich and the smokey moe sandwich. Porchetta would have been so much better if it wasn't so oily. The napkins they packed in the bag were soaked in oil and the sandwich was still dripping all over the table when I took it out. The pear jam complemented the meat well, but it was just so greasy. The smokey moe was very meh. Meat was on the dry side, sandwich wasn't very flavorful. Not noteworthy at all, I'm kind of confused what other reviewers were raving about. Friendly service. If I lived in SF, I would've liked to try their meats.

Judy C.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday for the first time. We got the pastrami and the Smokey Moe, both were good. I also had to get my favorite truffle chips ever. This is a meat shop so they offer a bunch of other meats to buy. They have grocery items such as tomato sauces and pesto, all arranged neat & clean. I took the sandwiches to bare bottle down the block and enjoyed it there with a beer!

Wes B.

Yelp
This review is for their sandwiches and not the butcher/deli meats they sell which also look incredible. Their sandwich menu has about 8 items on it with the always heavenly Torres potato chips available (Truffle chips are the goat). These are high quality sandwiches here. I ordered the porchetta sandwich which had melted cheese, caramelized onions and jalapeño jam. Bread was well crispy and tasted like it was made near by. The bread was toasted perfectly and the sandwich was one of the better I have had in SF so far. The sandwich and chips were about $14 which is a good deal for a meal of this high quality. If they don't have some of the drink choices you want there is a corner store down the street and a coffee shop next door. Looking forward to many returns to Avedano's .

Caya S.

Yelp
Avedano's is an incredible local butcher with delicious sandwiches, meats AND prepared soups and meals. They are always kind and helpful which goes far during these times. I also really appreciate that they take EBT/food stamps. Truly a community business that cares about community!

Agatha K.

Yelp
Incredible sandwiches, friendly and efficient folks working. Most importantly, great quality meats.

Jesse C.

Yelp
Quick and easy service. Awesome vibes! And, delicious quality meats! If you're on a tight budget it's worth it but, again "quality meats"

Lauren S.

Yelp
This spot brings ALL the vibes and high quality meat. I'm not a huge meat eater, so when I do, I want to make sure it comes from high quality sources. The staff is so knowledgeable. It's an all around great shopping experience. Try the smoked chicken salad in the premade section Also, always pick up some dog beef jerky for the pup when I go!

Emma S.

Yelp
Whoa. One of the best sandwiches I've had! My boyfriend and I split the Smokey Moe and we were so sad we didn't each order our own. Turkey, bacon, Mayo, jalapeño jam, Swiss and pepperoncinis all toasted in a crunchy melty panini press *drool* can't wait to go back and house at least 2 of those all time myself! Onion dip and chips on the side were great too! Oh and the owner, Angela, has excellent taste in music too, so you can groove out to Antony and the Johnsons while you're waiting for your order :)

Angelina H.

Yelp
This butcher shop is also home to some REALLY tasty paninis! The quality of their ingredients is top notch, and their selection of food is pretty great. I don't think you can really go wrong ordering anything! All paninis are $10.99 and the sandwich of the day is $9.99. I ordered the Porchetta panini and WOW it was delicious!! Inside was porchetta, fig jam, arugula, sweet peppers, and provolone. The bread was perfectly crisp and the fig jam added the perfect sweet flavor. My only critique is that I think they could have definitely stuffed the sandwich a bit more with each ingredient.

David P.

Yelp
Here are the best veggie sandwiches in the bay area!! Fast service and unforgettable taste!!! Thanks!

Misha T.

Yelp
I really like Avedano's. Good meat. Good selection of other kinda hard to find stuff (collatura, things of that nature). Plus the smokey moe sandwich is excellent. Whatever sweet mayo/aioli they use is a great match. Call ahead if you need something larger to make sure they hold on to it for you.

Gervase D.

Yelp
This place is WAY overpriced to begin with. But that's not enough, if you pay with a credit card, they have one of those SQUARE devices that will prompt you for a TIP. Absolutely incredible

Yelp
December 24th 2016, about 4pm. My friend could not score a prime rib anyplace. It was up to me to save Christmas. I did not want try Safeway for such precious meat so I went up the hill and prayed I would find something. Boy did I. I scored a 10 pounds 4 rib roast from 5 Dot Ranch. Not cheap at $25.99 per pound. I asked them to cut it in such a way that it will be easy to carve but leave the bones tied. They happily obliged. This was going to be my first attempt at roasting a standing rib roast. From the photos despite the dark crust it came out perfectly medium rare. I'll share my secret below. I was terrified when it came out of the oven. This store has some of the finest steaks to bring home and prepare for your family. Again it's not cheap but the quality is top notch. Ground beef is ground daily and you can specify which cuts you like for a custom grind. I'm planning to get some chuck, brisket and short rib to make burgers when it's grilling time. Lots of other meats and rubs to make it perfect are for sale. Free range chicken, lamb and various pork roasts. Anyway ... the recipe. Bring roast to room temperature. Salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Spread liberally. Roast at 500° for 45 minutes. Turn oven down to 325° for 30 minutes. Turn oven up to 425° for 15-30 minutes for medium rare. Do not open the oven door until it's done after the 15-30 minutes. The Roast was demolished by 7 people with no leftover. The remaining ribs were devoured the next day. Thank you Avedano for saving Christmas!

Jess C.

Yelp
3.5 stars for quite a disappointing Porchetta sandwich. I can't help but think of Roli Roti when you mention Porchetta, and perhaps that's where I went wrong. The tomato jam and other fresh ingredients is why I give this place 4 stars and the benefit of the doubt. I want to reserve judgment for the time when I return which hopefully will be soon. For $9 you can find much bigger and better sandwiches elsewhere. Note: The Porchetta is thinly sliced, not served in thick chunks and the ratio leans much heavier on the bread side than the meat. Also all sandwiches are panini style.

Yelp
I recorded an episode of Easy Chinese: San Francisco and the Chinese gal with the British accent showed up here to get her meat on. I'm so obsessed with all things Yelpable that my attention was immediately diverted from her Chinese yellow bean chicken skewers to reading the reviews of this butcher shop. A few of my Yelp friends had been and they were raving about it. The non-friends were dropping 5 star reviews as well. So, guess where I showed up Sunday afternoon?? The place is pretty small but large on substance. As I walked inside I was met with some friendly butchers who were ready to answer some questions. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to cook, so I just took a nice slow peak at all the goods in the butcher case. What I noticed was quite interesting. We've all been to the supermarket "butcher" counter and they have 42 steaks, 18 roasts, 23 chicken breasts and so on. This place is different. They offered up two flat iron steaks, which were well marbled and not over sized. They had maybe 8 filet migon on hand and they looked pretty good, but small. It dawned on me that a real butcher shop, one that's been in business as long as these guys and sources high quality local meats has a smaller selection b/c a big rig didn't pull up to the back and drop off 3 tons of meat. They likely had a few cows delivered, they carved em up and this is what's fresh. Very cool stuff that's a tad more expensive than my budget would allow, so I didn't get a chance to make a purchase, but I was intrigued. They offer up a lot of other goods too. Small selection of produce, some high quality salts, seasonings and Blue Bottle Coffee. What I did get my hands on was the Smokey Moe panini sandwich. They take their time with this sandwich and it's definitely worth the wait. Smokey Moe is smoked, tender and moist chicken breast with a few slices of the most perfectly cooked bacon I've ever tasted, layered with Jalapeno jam and fresh crusty ciabatta slathered with tasty, zesty mayo. I took a look at their panini maker and noticed it was not the Martha Stewart plastic version you find on sale at Target. It was a giant honking cast iron man made bad ass!! That's what it is!! As the sandwich is toasting away, the butcher opened the lid slowly to place the bread on top. He then drizzled some oil over the top of the bread and closed the lid ever so slowly. This attention to detail created a flaky, crusty finish to each delicious bite of this wonderful sandwich.

Bea B.

Yelp
Product selection is fairly decent; I've liked what I've purchased. Service is what it is. The last time I visited, the counter person decided she was done with the interaction and simply walked with the initial bit of my order to the register. There was no 'would you like anything else?' just silence. I actually didn't know what was happening, so I was still standing over at the meat counter with my thumb up my arse when I realised where she'd gone. I had wanted to add to my order, but it seemed to have been decided for me that I was done at Avedano's. As I was paying, I noticed a tip jar at the register. I've got a tip for ya: Ask your custies if they'd like anything else before walking over to the register. You might both increase sales and insure that the custie doesn't leave empty-handed/without everything she or he wants.

Tiffany C.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided to go to Avedano's for a sandwich. I decided to order the pastrami sandwich with pickles instead of sauerkraut and my boyfriend ordered the World Famous Smokey Moe (Turkey, bacon, pepperoncini, swiss, mayo, and jalapeno jam). We waited approximately 10 minutes for our sandwich after ordering. Among inspection, I think the amount of meat that is in each sandwich was less than I was expecting. For the price, I think there should be a few more slices (the sandwiches were pretty thin). However, the sandwiches are delicious. The bread is amazing and super crunch/toasted nicely. The pastrami slices I got were on the fattier side which was a bit of a disappointment but it still tasted good and the meat was definitely quality. The Smokey Moe was really good. The jalapeno jam has a nice kick to it. Overall, the quality of these sandwiches are good and I would come back again from time to time.

Grant C.

Yelp
This is service oriented not product but in the end isn't that equally important? I'm attempting a roast duck and the recipe advises using additional duck liver as part of a herb stuffing to keep the bird moist. Ok so where do i go ... its not like Safeway or TJ's has them lying around. I know I'll call Avedano's ... we made homemade sausage and they were so helpful with not only having casings available bulk by the foot but also answering some basic questions about the process ... so naturally I expected the same experience ... WRONG! Them: Avedano's (voice of a man sounded like he'd just woken up and couldn't give a fuck about anything) Me: Hi I'm looking for duck or chicken liver in bulk for a recipe do you carry that? Him: No (then just breathing) Me: Do you carry it prepackaged? Him: No (just breathing) Me: So you don't carry livers at all? (just confirming) Him: No Me: Goodbye (now thinking could he at least offered an option but then I remembered he doesn't give a fuck!) Okay how about Gus's ... have heard great things about their meat counter Them: Meat Department Me: Hi I'm looking for duck or chicken liver in bulk for a recipe do you carry that? Them: No we don't carry duck but I do have chicken, how much are you looking for? Me: Just about 1 cup Them: Yes we have plenty to cover you. But if you want I could order duck liver, when do you need it? Me: Well I'm going to ... blah blah blah blah You get the picture! Couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. So the moral of the story is perhaps the artisanal butcher stocks a great product but they might teach their staff something about customer service skills. However noticing that their ownership does not respond to poor reviews I can only surmise they don't give a fuck either. So off to Gus's for a great shopping experience and did I mention they have FREE PARKING :)

Kelly R.

Yelp
Breakfast tacos in the morning so yummy in my tummy. Also super stoked you all decided to put enough egg and yummy stuff inside the tortilla they were getting pretty skimpy a couple months/weeks back and it was not worth it. So keep putting stuff in the tacos ans I'll keep coming back.

Meredith D.

Yelp
I am a big fan of Avedano's. All of the meat I've gotten from here has been super tasty, and the customer service is also excellent. I was trying to figure out what kind of steak to get, and the person at the counter walked me through the whole process and suggested some spices too. I don't eat very much meat lately, but when I do I try to get it at Avedano's!

Kenneth R.

Yelp
While visiting the wonderful Pinhole Coffee next door, we snuck off to Avedano's to order two panini. I selected the porchetta, while my companion asked for a veggie. Both were out-of-this-world excellent. In particular, the veggie panino won the award for "best vegetarian sandwich I ever had"! The sandwiches don't come out immediately -- you can order and pay, take a 10-minute walk and then come back to pick up your sandwiches. The women who work here all seem very, very nice. Cortland Avenue is becoming a destination. This Holly Park Market deserves to be on your radar.

Yelp
So happy to have found an old school butcher shop minutes away in our neighborhood - and what a gem this place is! We were taken care of by Angela, who was so friendly and helpful. We had a ton of questions (I'm sure we probably annoyed her with them lol) but she was happy to answer and was really knowledgeable about all of their products. We grabbed a couple of different things just to try them out - lamb ribs (couldn't pass this up with the sale price!), ground lamb, a sample of their house made lamb sausage, beef stew meat, Chuck steaks and beef tallow. The quality of the meat we got was amazing!!!!! Especially the lamb, I'm an avid fan of lamb and it's hard to find decent lamb meat in the area. Thanks to Avedano's, I won't have that problem anymore. It should probably be noted that you can't enter the shop and that you'll have to order from a menu posted outside (Covid 19). The process was still easy and when we were taking too long with our questions, the other worker in the shop was nice enough to come outside and help the people who were in line behind us. Avedano's will now be our go to butcher, heading over as soon as they open to stock up for fathers day. Thanks for being so helpful and patient with us Angela, you've gained some new regulars!

Bubba M.

Yelp
This is a high end butcher with truly excellent products. When I'm feeling indulgent, I buy a couple of pounds of their fancy ass ground beef and make the most fattily delicious, crispy on the ends, lip smacking meatloaf you ever had. Sandwiches are really fine and they have an assortment of things you need to make a great meal. Service is like a butcher - busy people working very hard for you, not there to chitchat.

Andrew A.

Yelp
Had the Smokey Moe and it was very good. Haven't tried the produce yet but the sandwich is worth going for. Usually has a line but they get through it pretty quickly.

Cherylynn N.

Yelp
The moment that I realized that I'm turning into my mother (one of my WORST nightmares): *Unwraps $9 sandwich from Avedano's* http://bit.ly/1vULF5Y AIYA SOOOOO EXPENSIFEEEY! OTHER NOTES: *Expensive, upscale butcher shop. --I previously called to inquire about English cut short ribs. They charge $13.99/lb versus $8.99/lb at Whole Foods. *They also sell a small selection of prepared foods: cheese, charcuterie, soups, and fresh pastas. They have 4505 hot dogs and chicharrones! *Around 10 sammies on the menu ($9 each) --Arista in Porchetta ($9): Look at Earl G's pic: http://bit.ly/1rWPAyS and look at mine again: http://bit.ly/1vULF5Y. My sammie was super skimpy on the meat which was all concentrated in the middle. I was left with lot of bread on the edge that I tossed. Loved the savory, tangy tomato jam but so not worth the price tag. For the same price, you can get a stellar, more filling sammie at Chris Cosentino's Boccalone or Roli Roti (Ferry Building). --Banh Mi ($9): This is NOT a "banh mi", it's banh-mi "inspired": http://bit.ly/1nZuilP. A banh mi is supposed to be served in a toasted baguette and have layers of flavor (salty, sweet, sour & spicy). I wasn't expecting an authentic banh mi here but I at least expected something that somewhat resembled and somewhat tasted like it. Avedano's uses an untoasted ciabatta (too bready), pork terrine, and pickled veggies. No pate. Bland overall. Boo. *Service doesn't match their high price tag. They weren't very friendly in person but over the phone they were kinda rude. When I called about the short ribs, the curt employee placed the phone in front of a radio speaker blasting heavy metal. Thanks lady, I'm hard of hearing as is. *No seating. To go-only. *Easy, free street parking.

Lolia S.

Yelp
Not your average butcher shop...Avedano's butchers its own meat (and even has butchering classes) and carries gourmet, hard to find pantry items (dried pasta, spices, teas, olive oils, jam), prepared foods, seasonal produce (e.g., fuzzy almonds), fancy beverages, fresh pasta, fresh bread, homemade sauces, soup stock, The Latest Scoop gelato, cookbooks, etc. Where else can you get lardo, Tuscan pork, Let's Be Frank hot dogs, duck fat, wild boar salami, goat carnitas, cuttlefish ink, and 4505 Chicharrones? By the register you'll find all sorts of sweet treats including chocolate tiles from Poco Delice, Kika's Treats, Clairesquares, Vosges Mo's Bacon bars, and cute pins that say I love you more than bacon, I love you more than ham, I love you more than pork and I love you more than steak. They were just mentioned in the NY Times and featured on the CBS Morning Show too. * Pulled pork panini ($6.85) with pickled red onions, mustard, and fresh tomatoes. You can taste the quality of the ingredients, including the mustard. The sandwich was dripping in oil/grease though (definitely made it less enjoyable). It was the greasiest Panini I've ever had - by far. Even the bread (ciabatta) was oil soaked. The meat was on the dry side. I liked how it was warm and toasty. I'd like to try some of their other paninis (steak with gruyere, BBQ chicken, turkey with bacon, porchetta). I don't know why it was so oily but hopefully it's just that one type of sandwich. They even have a frequent shopper card; you get a hole punch for every $25 spent and it's easy to spend $25.

Earl G.

Yelp
A pork and meat lovers paradise. Came for the porchetta sandwich and left knowing that this is one of the best specialty meat shops I've been to. The list of farms and vendors they work with is a whose who of sustainable and artisan meats. Besides stocking 4505 chicharrones aka pork cotton candy, I got all googly eyed when I saw that they had jamon iberico. Yes, it's $80/lb but I'm definitely going to need to try a few slices of this Kobe beef of pork next time. Pretty extensive sandwich menu. $8.50 each and they get cooked on the panini press to order. The people who work here are pretty friendly.(http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/_X3OobCjbcs3S_pnql_PsA?select=GyoRyHEvrubkA4WHpIdOKg) Ranked in preference. 1. ARISTA in PORCHETTA w/arugula, provolone, and sun dried tomato. Like a porchetta panini. I'm definitely a fan yet Roli Roti's is still my favorite though. Eat this! (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/_X3OobCjbcs3S_pnql_PsA?select=wEQ9DRzA5Of1QzvRfhViSg) 2. LAMB SANDWICH - Like a pulled pork sandwich that came with pesto, pecorino, and sun dried tomato. Nice flavor on the lamb with a balance of flavor from the pesto. I liked the crispness of the bread with the tender lamb. EAT if you like lamb, don't if you don't know since it can get gamey. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/_X3OobCjbcs3S_pnql_PsA?select=fny2fECua0jyb0YBG5yZBg) 3. STEAK SANDWICH - w/pecorino, arugula, and pickled tomato. Good. I liked how they didn't skimp on the meat which were tender and had good flavor. I'd like it more if it had been med rare than well done. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/_X3OobCjbcs3S_pnql_PsA?select=XKikqMB1K4wkBmxj-MRKiw) The quality of the meat here is awesome. With the obscene amount of pork product here (like kurobata prosciutto), I'll defnitely be back to swine and dine. It's cool that they even do a butchering class, that's such a foodie gift.

Yelp
We had known about Avedano's for some time, already fans of its small-shoppe approach focusing on local, organic and quality meats and produce. We love their kurobuta pork chops, fresh pastas, shelves of fine vinegars and oils, the magic freezer where one is likely to find demi-glace, bones for stock, and caul fat... we love the fact that it was run and managed by 3 women, including the butcher. We love that an entire pig is broken down every week for many tasty purposes. The husband wanted to do their butchering class with his grandfather and younger brother, an aspiring chef. Though Avedano's only does one class a month, they added one extra class in January when they learned Danny's family was flying out from Florida. The class is limited to 6 people, costs $300 and entails 3 hours of butchery class. Each person gets to take home around 14-15 lbs of meat (approx. 100 lbs gets broken down during the class). Lunch is included and Avedano's provides all the tools, the meat and butcher smocks. Each person gets hands-on work with actually cutting up and breaking down two entire carcasses of lamb and suckling pig. A quick tour behind the counter reveals that the place is immaculate - one could eat off the floors. There's a space in the back for private parties, and a kitchen for preparing tasty pre-made foods. When Tia, the butcher (who's also executive chef at Sociale) learned that Danny's grandfather and brother were flying home to Florida the next day, she vaccum-packed their meats for them. All in all, the class (while pricey), was a fantastic experience. With useful handouts and the invaluable hands-on training, the class helps to demystify the (these days) rare and almost forgotten art of butchery.

Yelp
I am going to skip over the fact that this place is a top notch butcher shop with consistently fresh & high quality product, an awesome staff, and a unique selection of delicious artisan delights. My review is inspired by one particular thing today, their "Smokey Moe" panini... the best sandwich I have ever had (without exaggeration). Their whole panini selection knocks out almost all the SF competition--- their home cured/smoked/braised meats, exclusively high-quality ingredients, and thoughtful balance of flavors as part of the careful design of every sandwich they make, puts Avedanos well above the many sandwich mills that dot the city. From their Cubano, "Barbwire" BBQ Brisket Sandwich, Tuscan Pork, Meatloaf sandwich----- you name it, all top notch, amazing sandwiches. THE SMOKEY MOE --- however..... is a step above them all. It is the panini masterpiece! It deserves the attention of the food network, or some sort of public praise---I'm born & rasied in SF & It is the best sandwich I've had, and I think everyone needs to try it. The Smokey Moe panini is a cornucopia of perfectly balanced flavors and textures--- a delight to all of your taste buds. It has house-smoked chicken, bacon, a jalapeno jam, light slather of mayo, swiss cheese, and pepperocinis. The smoked meat is balanced perfectly with the salty bacon, the sweetness & spiceness of the jalapeno jam, the acidity & added spice of the pepperocinis, with the mayo & cheese to add some extra fats for flavor and to keep the sandwich moist and juicy. The way the flavors come together is like art. I was tempted to not write a review, and leave this little secret to myself to prevent long lines, but I feel the world should know about how awesome this place is.

Yelp
This might as well be a porn store for meat lovers. behind the nondescript storefront and the retro neon sign, is a wonderland of all things meat. they carry a a good selection - beef, pork, chicken, duck, rabbit, goat. i saw a piece of kobe beef with such beautiful marbling...made a mental note that i should start a cleansing diet next week, so I can come back next weekend to enjoy this piece of fine fatty meat. and also to buy a tub of either the lard or the duck fat or both. but for today, i just walked away with a bone-in pastured pork chop from Devils Gulch Ranch. and i appreciate that they source their meats from local, quality farms - most of the beef are grass fed, and the other meats are mostly all pastured. though they don't carry marin sun farms. oh, and the guys and gal behind the counter were super knowledgeable and friendly. kobe beef, i'll be back.

Yelp
Went there yesterday and bought enough meat that would last me for the next three months!! I got grass-fed (flax finished) beef roast, free-range chicken breasts with wings and bones in, grass-fed ground beef, 10-lbs of beef bones (marrow and stock bones), and one pint of bone stock that they made and kept frozen in the freezer. It's hard to find good quality meat, so I normally just bring my cooler with ices and make my trip all the way from mid Peninsula every few months to buy meat and beef bones and stock up my freezer. While there, I also bought a pull-pork panini sandwich for lunch and gobbled it down sitting in my car, as there is no seating inside the store. It was so good! The panini was grilled perfectly, crispy outside with the cheese fully melt inside. The meat was tender, albeit a little dry as there was no sauce on it. The mustard dressing was very strong and it totally cleared up my sinus congestion! LOL...Overall a simple, clean taste and good quality sandwich. I also got a bottle of House Kumbucha (see photo) to drink after the sammy and it tasted almost like a beer! I asked the guy working there to make sure it is non-alcoholic and they assured me it is just a fermented drink. I know what kumbucha is; it is fermented tea with live cultures and added flavors, which contains probiotics and is really good for digestion. So with the "buzz" from the kumbucha and a full stomach after the quick lunch, off I headed back home. I shall be back in 3 months!! P.S. I came across this on Yelp for the House Kumbucha: http://www.yelp.com/biz/house-kombucha-san-francisco It turns out that this is a local business and they also offer kumbucha-making classes. Kumbucha is my favor beverage and I have tried different brands. This is by far the best!

Yelp
While the product here has been good or very good, I can't say the same for the service. Not the friendliest or most helpful (I actually got this response to a question of mine, "do you want this or not".) In hindsight I wish I had just walked out. Go to the butcher on Church. Much friendlier and way more helpful.

Yelp
Seriously God bless this place for existing and doing what they do. The meat is always so tasty, so fresh, and almost always butchered THAT DAY. Whether you get the lamb ribs or the beef stew meat, each item is locally sourced and you can speak directly to the butchers to find out exactly where the meat comes from and how best to utilize it. They even have local fish caught nearby. Everyone who works there is very helpful when it comes to answering questions, even if it is silly questions like how to cook various cuts of things. This is a local store, people! It's very important to support these institutions because Lord knows, we don't need another corporate grocery store popping up and taking over the whole joint. Lastly, I always grab a pepperoni log to snack on while I make my decision about what I'm going to buy that day. Makes the experience shopping there even better!

Yelp
A few others have commented on the poor service at this fancy butcher shop, so I guess my experience today wasn't a one-off. My whole boring story is below, but in a nutshell, don't bother reserving anything from them since they're not actually going to hold it for you. And the people working there won't give a $h*t and try to ignore you if you're unhappy. I called last week to order 5 lbs of corned beef brisket. They said they'd reserve 5 lbs of the house-cured but to call back the next day to see if the brisket was going to come in. When I called, they told me the brisket was in stock and that was the only thing available since they had sold the house-cure that they supposedly had reserved for me. I should have understood that was a premonition... I told them I'd come in on Friday for the brisket, but things got hectic so I called Saturday to *make sure they still had it* before I came in. They told me yes but when I got there 10 minutes later they said they had sold it! No apology, no explanation. They said they called me that morning, but there was no record of any call from them on my phone. The worst part was that they just disengaged and started ignoring me when I asked why they bothered to take my cc number if they weren't actually going to hold it for me. I don't know how unhappy these owners/employees (?) must be to treat customers like this, but in a town where there are plenty of other places to get premium quality meat, there's no need to put up with crummy service.

Yelp
I've been coming here for the past few months to get their meat box. I usually get the Housewife meat box because it's the meat we mostly use. The pork loin is to die for! It's easy to order, just call and pick it up on Friday. I think it's a good deal! Except the bacon from my last box was a bit salty. Whenever I pick up the meat box, I do end up getting other things here. I've tried their some of their sandwiches and while the meat they use are good, the sandwich doesn't really wow me much. They have pastured eggs, 4505 chicharrones (occasionally), small bottles of Red Boat fish sauce (best one ever!), chocolates and other stuff here. It can be one stop shop for some people. But for me since I have my CSA, I have restrain from getting more stuff here. I stick to the meat. They have a frequent card. I forgot how much you have to spend and what you get once you complete it. But I think it's good that they have this.

Yelp
I just really love this place. Quality, service, selection. For years now- many visits, super consistent. All the "experts" in this town can have such attitude but not these folks. For our budget, it's a treat but better to eat less meat anyway and just make sure it's this delicious when you do eat it. Seriously, everyone here is so very helpful- be sure to solicit their tips about other cuts, cooking methods, etc if the line isn't too long. The sandwiches are also one of the tastiest eats on all of Cortland!

Yelp
Best meat in town. You can find pretty much any type of cuts you can think about it, they also sell great specialty items like Bottarga. Just a reminder quality come with a price :).

Yelp
Came for a panini, left with a panini + a rack of lamb ribs to cook for dinner. The girl helping us was quite wonderful in recommending what type of meat to buy and how to prepare it with a coffee rub they make in house. We did everything like she recommended and it turned out great. I felt like I got quite the deal on the lamb ribs, too. They have a solid collection in the front, but if you're looking for something specific, be sure to ask! Really helpful service who seem genuinely happy to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

Yelp
Best butcher in the city, hands down. They'll prepare nearly any cut of meat if you call ahead, they've always got a great selection, and they can really answer any of your advanced meat-related questions. I've been making a lot of smoked items and sausages recently (as well as smoked sausages) and they've been able to help me select the right cuts and proportions to make sure my sausages come out tasty and moist. Their sandwiches are also amazing, as is their small selection of groceries.

Yelp
An absolute gem. Excellent selection of fine quality meats, friendly and attentive service and advice when you need it

Yelp
I'm not usually impressed by sandwiches but THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!! We ordered two sandwiches to share (and including drinks, it was less than $25 which is awesome in SF)! Anyway, onto the food.....we ordered the "Arista Di Porchetta" and the "Smokey Tom" panini. Both sandwiches are equally delicious by drastically different too! The Porchetta is a bold, full-flavored and zesty sandwich with provolone and sweet peppers (I'm drooling just thinking about it). The Smokey Tom, is a milder sandwich, with turkey and a tasty jam (maybe fig? I forgot). Yum, yum, yum!!! PS: the purveyors of this shop are super nice!!!

Yelp
We have lived in the neighborhood for over 12 years, just down the street from Avendano's. I've over the years frequented this shop and wanted to support their mission of sustainable practices and humanely raised and butchered animals, however their customer service is HORRIBLE every single time I've been in here. Along with the smell of Panini's grilling, are the employees vibes of annoyance wafting through the air. No friendly "What can I help you with?", only a grunt and "What do you want?", type of place. Come for the excellent meats and know if you choose to eat meat, this place is doing it right, but don't expect a friendly warm welcome.
