The 17 Best Caribbean Restaurants In Philly

"We had to drive around South Street for 20 minutes and dodge three sloppy drunks leaving Founding Fathers to try the Cuban sandwich here. Totally worth it. The Center City Cuban spot layers a long, crusty roll with mustard, ham, roast pork, and melted swiss cheese that hold pickles in place, making one deliciously salty, juicy sandwich. The rest of the Cuban dishes—croquettes with marshmallow-soft centers and flaky empanadas that you’ll want to buy by the dozen—are also excellent. Walk into the bright space for a strong early morning coffee or creamy smoothie, sing along to Celia Cruz, and have a sandwich worth navigating the city for.  " - candis mclean

Avenida 7 Cafe Review - Center City - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

The Center City Cuban spot layers a long, crusty roll with mustard, ham, roast pork, and melted swiss cheese that hold pickles in place, making one deliciously salty, juicy sandwich. Stop by early if you want the meaty masterpiece (they close at 4pm during the week and 6pm on weekends). Google
Lovely little Cuban café on South Street in Philadelphia. I ordered a cafecito and the Cuban sandwich. The sandwich was tasty and also twice the size of those I had bought in NYC in the past--a hefty portion. The café is beautiful inside with photos of Cuba, a screen that also plays music and small wooden tables with chairs. The owners were very pleasant and talkative. I will return and highly recommend it.

It was my first time in Philadelphia, and I was craving a Cuban sandwich. The best Cuban cafe in town, with good food and an excellent staff. They made me feel right at home. Gracias!

If you’re craving a meal that’s home based and feels like your fam member cooked it, this is your place. I ate the BLT and Croquette sandwich and so glad I did! Aside from the delicious food, the service was incredible and its family owned. Felt like I was back in Cuba! Highly recommend!!!

Google
All around 5 star experience!!! The warm heart of the owner and his wife made the difference. Thank you for your hospitality and pure welcoming of us. Much appreciated friend.

Google
Incredible Cubano, bread was incredibly delicious and the sauce was just perfect. Pork was cooked to perfection and the ham in the Cubano sandwich was delicious. Highly recommend for a quick bite to eat!

Google
I’m Cuban-American, so I may be a little biased, but this place is great. It’s a perfect example of hard working people trying to run an honest business. The owners are from Cuba and are trying to bring authentic food and atmosphere to Philly. They make their Cuban bread in house and have all the staples. If you live close or don’t mind taking the train into city and walking a bit, it is worth trying

Google
This place is superb. The food is simply fantastic- the pork on the Cuban sandwich was the best pork I’ve had. Also tried the croquette and loved it. The menu is small but you really can’t go wrong with any of them. The service is friendly and attentive. Can’t wait to go back again soon.

Google
Our first time here and had the BLT, Cuban sandwich and a Guava smoothie. The facility is small with 4 tables and a couch. The bathroom is clean and comfortable. The Cuban sandwich is large enough for 2 people but lacks pickles. To my surprise the cheese included American slices. The pork was excellent and tasty. Our BLT had ham instead of bacon. The tomatoes were fresh and sweet. The smoothie was delicious and delightful. We did not see Flan on the menu but we did get some and it was excellent. The owner was very nice and made us feel welcome.

Yelp
The hospitality that was presented is unmatched. I would come back to Philadelphia just to visit my friends here. From the beautiful people to the view with great coffee, this is the place to be. The Cuban sandwich was top teir and the Specialty drink was amazing. Please stop by you won't regret it.

Yelp
Went in here a few times before my shift to work. Probably the best environment given the owners and workers are husband and wife. I sat with them for a few and talked about their journey immigrating to the United States. Definitely left an amazing impression on me how the American dream can come true one family at a time. They are an outstanding addition to the community and I hope to visit them multiple times a week. Amazing coffee great baked treats! Almost felt like I was vacationing in La Habana while drinking coffee there.

Yelp
RUN to this adorable and delicious Cuban cafe! It's got great ambience, and the food is authentic. Generous portions! The owners just relocated from Cuba, and they are so friendly. We used to live in Miami and I'm Cuban American, and it tasted like HOME to me! We LOVED it.

Yelp
Great spot! Cubano is delicious and the owners are super friendly. Glad to have this spot in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Completely surpassed my expectations! I grew up in Miami, but relocated to the northeast almost 10 years ago. It's very hard to come across authentic cuban food in this area, so I was extremely excited to try this restaurant. The croquetas, cortadito, and cuban sandwich were amazing, even for Miami standards, and the owners were kind and hospitable. Definitely come and check them out.

Yelp
Got an empanada - freshly fried crispy outside and stuffed generously with super flavorful, tender pork. Only had a short interaction with staff but very sweet and pleasant.

Yelp
What a fantastic South St. gem. The man working the counter was so sweet and friendly. The food was phenomenal. We tried the chicken sandwich & the cuban sandwich. The chicken sandwich was sooo juicy & fresh! The sandwich bread is out of this world. Excellent espresso and coffee as well. We felt like we stepped into Havana with the door open and summer breeze flying in, along with the Cuban music playing in the background. All together a lovely lunch. Can't wait to come back

Yelp
Such a warm and charming spot! The vibrant colors, great play list and hospitality were way on point. I ordered an egg and cheese sandwich, my friend the croissant and I drank a delicious cup of coffee. We lingered over our food and were greeted warmly when one of the owners came in. My sandwich was good, egg over easy and nice roll. I will definitely be back. I am eager to try the Cubano and the Cuban cheesesteak. Go! It's wonderful!

Yelp
For me, it's all about the owners of a café. It's top down. This location isn't hippy dippy. It's quiet and the service is incredible because the owners are there working tirelessly to make sure you're happy. My husband and I both got wonderful cappuccinos, but they have an expanded food service that harkens back to their Cuban roots. We love them and we love this location. We are about to list a home right around the corner and we will be there frequently and hope to see you there.

Yelp
The food...the vibe...the owners...the COFFEE!!! Stopped in to check it out and had an outstanding Cuban sandwich with plantains and have added this cafe to my shortlist!!!

Brad S.

Yelp
Stopped by when I noticed this place on Google maps despite living a block away and never having noticed it before, decided to pup in for a late breakfast. Glad I did. Love the light Cuban ambiance. The double espresso was fantastically strong, and the cubano sandwich tastes delicious. Will visit again.

Yelp
Had lunch here yesterday. I've had a lot of authentic Cuban food (with relatives in Miami) and these were some of the best croquettes I've ever had! We also had the Tostones and Ham & Cheese sandwich. Do yourself a favor and check this family run place out!

Natalie D.

Yelp
This place is a Philly hidden gem! The owners have recently moved from Cuba and created an atmosphere that doesn't get any more authentic. The food is all homemade exactly the way it's done in Havana. Can attest as a granddaughter of Cuban immigrants!

Yelp
What an incredible gem. The food is delicious, authentic, and fresh. We ordered the croquettes, Cuban sandwich, and espresso - all special. The owners, Yosban and Barbara, are warm and lovely to talk to. We can't wait to come back and try more.

Yelp
Food was great and staff was friendly. We got the Cuban sandwich, croquettes, and empanadas, and all were delicious. A welcome addition to the neighborhood. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I grew up in Miami, and both my parents are Cuban, so am well versed in Cuban culture and cuisine. This is an exceptional restaurant, and there is NO restaurant in Miami that has better croquettas. If you want to try the perfect Cuban croquetta, head over to Avenida 7. They prepare a bechamel sauce for the croquetas that is unrivaled. The smokiness of the pork in the Cuban sandwich affords it a unique and savory taste. The bread on this sandwich is perfectly made. The tostones are fantastic, and the ham and cheese sandwich has a homemade tomato sauce that is exceptional. This is a fantastic Cuban restaurant and I encourage everyone to visit often. Every dish, juice and/or coffee is exceptionally prepared.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic Cuban food. I grew up in Miami, so I have a lot of exposure to this cuisine. Try the maduros and a guanabana shake!

CJ W.

Yelp
Whether a local or a tourist, plan on lunch at Avenida 7 Cafe! Choose a cozy cafe table or the comfy couch while you wait for your hand crafted hot beverage, delcious smoothie, and authentic Cuban sandwich. The fried pork and sliced ham slightly melt the swiss cheese while the acid of the dill pickle slices and yellow mustard cut through that perfect pork fat. Even the bread hits just right as you're transported to Miami's Calle Ocho neighborhood or along the Malecon in Havana. The restaurant is just off Septa's Broad Street Line (subway) and on Septa's Bus Route 40. There is a fee parking lot across the street. The Center City neighborhood is busy and safe!

Alex D.

Yelp
Really great Cuban food. I had the ropa vieja and it was as good as any I've had in south florida. The plantains were incredible. My friend had the grilled pork and that was awesome too. The owners are recent emigrants and very friendly

John F.

Yelp
Very cute spot. The service is great and they make you feel at home. I tried the Cuban cheese soup- delicious!

Melissa M.

Yelp
Cozy ambience, friendly service, and delicious Cuban food. So happy this place opened, it's a great addition to the neighborhood.

Lauren D.

Yelp
Food was quite delicious. I ordered the Tuna sandwich and French fries. The sandwich was light and hearty. Highly recommend if only for the ambiance alone. Nice music, charming vibe and nice owners!

Todd W.

Yelp
Really cool new spot. Excellent coffee and atmosphere, and a lot of interesting menu options. Really pleasant service and among the more reasonably priced coffee spots in the neighborhood. Worth visiting for sure!
