Truffle Pig Winery & Vineyards is my absolute favorite in Temecula Valley. Not because of the winery itself, but because of the incredible setting and location that Avensole created back in 2016. My husband and I became wine club members from day one when Avensole opened, drawn in by the stunning location and their South Slope. The restaurant was also a solid choice, making it a great local spot to enjoy wine and a meal.
I recently went there with my BFF for dinner on November 7th, with a reservation, and we opted to dine inside. What a transformation! The restaurant has received some major upgrades, and it feels very sophisticated, classy, and inviting now. Kudos to the interior designer (and the budget) for this beautiful revamp! The plush green velvet bench seating is a lovely touch, and removing the oversized host station was a smart decision.
We were seated inside and were happy with our table. It was nice to see that they had more kitchen staff than I remember from the Avensole days, which seemed like a positive sign.
We both started with the lavender martini, which was delicious and beautifully presented! However, our server seemed a bit new to the industry. He was repeatedly asking if we were ready to order before we had enough time to look over the menu, which was a little awkward.
We ordered the truffle sprouts, and I was excited to compare them to the amazing version I remembered from Avensole. I was pleasantly surprised--Domenico's nailed it! The sprouts were even better than before! Knowing the same chef is now leading the kitchen was reassuring, as it meant the best of the past was still present with all the new changes.
For our mains, we both ordered the filet, and I requested mine to be rare with grill marks. We ended up waiting over 45 minutes for our steaks, which felt like a long time for a relatively simple dish. When they finally arrived, unfortunately, the filets didn't quite hit the mark. It wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped and it wasn't seared. I also ordered the special truffle butter, but I wasn't impressed.
The biggest letdown was the twice-baked potato. Instead of being a well-executed dish, it felt like something I could have easily made at home. They just sliced the potato in half, threw on some toppings, and baked it again. They didn't scoop out the potato and mix everything together like you'd expect for a twice-baked potato. Definitely not worth the price.
Our server didn't check in with us after the truffle sprouts were brought out by the runner. From that point on, we had to track him down for the check, which felt a bit unprofessional.
As a local, I truly hope this place can refine the service and food to match its incredible location. I'm sure I'll give it another shot, but not in the immediate future.
