The 33 Best Restaurants in Providence, Rhode Island - Eater

"Often seen cooking on local morning TV on The Rhode Show, chef Nick Rabar exudes so much love for Rhode Island cuisine that you’d never guess he actually grew up in New York. After spending years working in kitchens in Providence, Rabar opened his own restaurant, Avenue N, with his wife Tracy in East Providence about a decade ago. Like the original, this new Providence outpost brings fine dining flair to a generally approachable, something-for-everyone menu. Go casual with a steak and mushroom pizza or high-end with delicately fried local Walrus and Carpenter oysters dabbed with horseradish-mustard sauce. Also look for Rabar’s version of stuffies." - Jenna Pelletier

Went with a few of my guys and was very happy with my decision. Incredible service from my waitress Solia. You have to request her when going to this restaurant… she provided us with a Drake Maye type performance tonight. She was also very on point with her recommendations for the Avenue N Burger (which was SCRUMPTIOUS let me tell you). Don’t even get me started about Sam behind the bar. She was mixing up drinks like prime Michael Jordan. 10/10 would eat out here again.

Amazing place in east Providence. Corn soup was to die for. Got scallops, were delicious. Great service, highly recommend

Google
Great drinks, never heard of them before which made the surprise even better. Had the Eggnog Martini, not sweet at all. Very pleasant taste and sneaks up quick. Also had the Dream house, unique taste. Very creative. Tried the onion soup, it was out of this world. Delicious cheese, the croutons and broth all blended together well. Had the Ave N burger, comes loaded with Vermont cheddar cheese, applewood bacon. Cooked medium well, the fries were not greasy and crisp. Laid back and Melo atomosphere. Street parking isn’t horrible to find.

Super cute and intimate (read: small) restaurant. The staff was very friendly and efficient, especially our server, Rachel. She provided honest recommendations and was so nice to chat with. I was celebrating my recently defended dissertation so she comped me a drink and she also didn't hesitate to switch out my friend's drink when my friend didn't like it. My group shared a few appetizers which we all enjoyed.I wasn't a fan of the empanadas but that's a personal preference. I really enjoyed my meal, which was a special of the day, however the steak was not cooked properly. We think the kitchen messed up the temps because my other friend got a medium steak and I got a well steak which were opposite orders. The other girls got a salmon dish and burgers which they all enjoyed. Then we shared one cheesecake and one tiramisu which we all loved. I personally think they could have added more espresso flavor to the tiramisu but the texture was perfect. Overall we had a great time over a great meal. Rachel made the experience so pleasant!

As always this restaurant continues to impress, this is a new location with the same aesthetic appeal . The exterior and interior looks similar to the other location in East Providence. Kudos to the interior designer. From the rafters to the floor everything is eye grabbing. Table set ups , the bar , the big providence lit up sign just set the mood for the night. The staff are always on top of their game here, plaid shirts and smiles is what you can expect. Drinks are always good, especially on a Friday after work. The food is phenomenal, I haven’t had a disappointing meal at either location. The menu is solid and exciting, the prices are elevated, but you get what you pay for…an excellent experience. If your looking for a new dining experience, this is the place to shake up your date night.

Google
Came in for dinner and unfortunately couldn’t get a table but was able to score 2 seats at the bar and all I can say is WOW! We were promptly great with a smile by Sam and she was so helpful and answered all of my questions. I can not recommend Avenue N enough! If you get the chance, sit with Sam and order the crispy cauliflower. You will not be disappointed!

Don’t skip this place. I plan to come back. First, I was placed at the bar as a single and the tender was nice and friendly. Even helped me with my selection. I asked about and ordered the Little Gem Salad and Massachusetts Cod dinner. I like to eat local fare if possible. The salad was amazing. The dill dressing was subtle and contrasted perfectly with the candied nuts and orange peel. I will get this again. See picture. Then the Cod came out and was beautiful! See the picture. However, I wish I could say it tasted as good as it looked. The tender asked me how it was and I honestly said “It’s ok, but not as amazing as it looks on the plate.” She asked what made me say that so I took a few minutes to really analyze and taste each item, even separately. Two things. First I thought it needed a bit more pop. In my opinion it was not seasoned enough. The beautiful sauce was very mild. The veggies were mild. The fish was mild. Get my point. Then, and I have to say this could have been me or perhaps one bad delivery, but the fish tasted a bit fishy, like when it’s older. But that could be a day to day thing. As far as the cooking, it was perfectly cooked, flaky and tender. Overall I loved the atmosphere, the service and the salad. When I come back I will try something other than the cod. So a 4 because of the Cod, but a 5 on everything else. Try it out.

Google
Wow, what a wonderful find. I’ll be honest at first- the menu seemed standard. Interesting salmon, good steak option, calamari. Don’t be fooled. This isn’t your average American cuisine. It is the best version of all your favorites. We made a last minute Friday reservation and got an amazing table. The calamari is crisp, spicy and perfectly balanced. The scallops in Uni-corn risotto is to die for. The shrimp and grits has an umami flavor that is both familiar and also so so so tasty. The service is great (thanks Tess), and you won’t be rushed. It’s a chill and fun atmosphere that you won’t regret! I would highly recommend for date nights, when you want to chill with friends or family without being rushed.

Yelp
I came in here after trying to get a walk-in reservation at another place that ended up being full. Avenue and was so delicious and so fun to eat at. We got a couple of bottles of wine for the table and a ton of appetizers and all just shared top of style. Would 100% come back, and next time I'll bring more people because it was such a fun environment. Our service was great, the restaurant is so cute, and the food is fantastic. Can't wait.

Yelp
I saw the glowing reviews on Yelp for Avenue N on Hope Street and decided to check it out with some friends. We arrived at 7 on a Friday night and the dining room was pretty much full- though it wasn't too overwhelming since the tables are spaced apart well. It was a bit energetic and we were seated after several minutes because we had a reservation; I can see it being hard to get a table on a weekend if you don't have a reservation. We sat by the window and were greeted by our server, who was very upbeat and gave us in depth descriptions of their specials for the night. We settled on some of their humorously-named cocktails and ordered some appetizers. After ten minutes, our server arrived back with the fried oysters, wings, Brussel Sprouts and pork baos that we ordered. My favorite was the fried oysters, which were so light and fresh, but all of them were delicious. For my main course, I chose the pan seared scallops which came on a bed of risotto. The presentation for this dish was done very well and the scallops were perfectly cooked. The risotto got a bit repetitive towards the end but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Overall, my experience at Avenue N was great and I recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a fantastic and modern take on New England cuisine.

Yelp
I recommend this business. Food is excellent, especially the salmon. I miss their Providence location.

Yelp
Officially one of my new favorite restaurants in providence! When you walk in, there's dim lighting which I particularly enjoyed especially because it made the providence sign stand out. Our waitress was kind and very attentive from the minute we were seated. Now the food was divine, everything was perfect. We ordered the calamari and each ordered the short rib with gnocchi. Every ingredient in that dish complimented each other so well, it was such a lovely culinary experience. My friend also ordered the "only fans" drink which she enjoyed. Will definitely return and can't wait to introduce more family and friends to this restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great time at this restaurant! I have been wanting to try it out ever since they moved into the spot and I usually see they are very busy on the weekends. We were able to snag a seat on a weeknight and we're very impressed with the food. I was not super hungry and the waitress suggested that I could get "half orders" or something so I got a half salad and some sliders that were on the appetizer menu and it was perfect! The atmosphere is clean and hip, but not uncomfortable. The prices weren't too bad either for a nice restaurant. Can't wait to try some of the fancy drinks when we come back next time.

Yelp
I sometimes dream about the grilled little gem salad. It's salty and crunchy and creamy all at once.
google avatar

Hasan K.

Yelp
Another enjoyable meal. Three of us shared all the food: three Brisket sliders, a little chicken gem salad (unusual and tasty), and a pepperoni pizza. We washed down the food with glasses of wine. We like the place and the vibe, even though it can get noisy. Our server Erin was personable and efficient.

Yelp
I had been here before but it had been a while. One of the best meals I've had recently from food to service to ambience. The place is small so DEFINITELY make a reservation. Two of us had burgers-crispy exterior, doughy bun and crispy bacon were the highlights and the fries were perfect. The other two had the chicken and the gnocchi with short rib and both looked terrific. Though I didn't have a drink this time I've met people for drinks there before and the list has lots of options. Already looking forward to my next trip.

Yelp
We typically frequent the Rumford Location but tried Providence last night. Just like Rumford, I fell in LOVE with Providence. We were a party of 4 and everything was perfect. Service was great without being overbearing. I did like that the tables are further apart here but it was very loud. Had oysters, little gems salad, oysters, potato soup, eggplant lasagna, chicken and scallops-everything was delicious. The drinks were fantastic as well especially the only fans, boujee, martini with blue cheese stuffed olives and the some like it hot.

Yelp
Very classy, casual venue. Hubby suggested we come here for dinner and I only had time to briefly glance through the photos before getting ready. The presentation of the dishes in the pictures looked very fancy and upscale, so I decided to put on a dress. Hubby was already wearing a suit for work. I didn't realize this restaurant was located on the East Side of Providence on Hope St., which is a casual hipster location. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer; hubby ordered the salmon with couscous and I ordered the fried oysters, which was thoughtfully served on a bed of salt and a giant slice of lemon and an amazing horseradish dipping sauce--perfect combo. There are only five pieces of oysters, but they are quite filling if you're ordering another appetizer and dessert. The calamari was excellent and so fresh. The flourless chocolate ganache cake was decadent with a guiltless hint of sweetness. The majority of the people there wore preppy casual outfits. Very hipster. I loved the upbeat music in the background and the casual ambiance. It's a popular restaurant, so it was packed but with zero to minimal wait time for seating on a Friday night. I did call ahead for reservation for 2 just to make sure we get seated right away as we were hungry.

Tammi M.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience at Avenue N Providence. We had a reservation for 8 but the place was packed. We had to wait until about 830 to be seated. But rather than looking the other way, we were treated so well and offered a drink and snack while we waited the extended time. On top of their kindness, the food and drinks were excellent and so fresh and delicious. We've been to the Rumford location many times over the years, but this solidifies the fact that this is a high quality place with a heart for customers . Thank you.

Yelp
Extraordinary experience, what an exceptional establishment with fantastic staff. I initially called asking a lot of (annoying and tedious) questions, some of which included a reservation, a bottle of wine recommendation, many others I can't even remember - all of which were time sensitive. Liam helped me patiently through out the entire process and I even called back a while later for some follow up questions I forgot to ask! I live in NC and my parents were driving from PA to Pawtucket and I found Avenue N (googled fine dining off of I95) for dinner for them and am beyond happy I did. I wish I could personally thank everyone who helped. Y'all are the BEST!!!
google avatar

Gillian K.

Yelp
The empanadas were pretty dry. The pork belly n buns were sublime, and the burger was nice. The standout were the drinks.. the lady running the bar is pretty talented. There were 3 couples drinking at the bar.. I can see why. Not as many people were dining, such a change from days gone by.
google avatar

Dennise K.

Yelp
Enjoying a meal here is never a disappointment. Since I am house sitting in the area, I made a point to pop on in for an early dinner. Just as they open is the perfect time to get in there before the crowds arrive. As a solo diner, the corner end of the bar is the perfect place to enjoy a meal and talk to the bartender. I always, always get the steak and mushroom pizza. I also treated myself to a delicious salad that was out of this world And Nathan the bartender made the perfect Manhattan. If you're in the neighborhood, make a reservation! Or you can show up just as they open, you are likely to score a seat. I highly recommend this place to either have dinner solo or to bring a friend!

Yelp
Great local spot right off of Hope Street. We will come here pretty often just given the location. Food is absolutely phenomenal here. Their menu is quite small but every item on the menu is extremely thought out. The scallops and salmon are always my go to. Their cocktail selection is great. Service is phenomenal. It's a cozy vibe with outdoor seating in the summer.

Yelp
Best pizza ever !! So glad we discovered this place ! Very creative ingredient choices

Yelp
Ambiance is good, staff was very attentive, as was speed of service. Unfortunately, with many awesome options in Providence, the food was unremarkable. Three of us started by sharing some appetizers, including the Black Bean & Smoked Corn Empanadas, Kung Pao Brussel Sprouts, and the Point Judith Calamari. All were ok, but none were "wow, this is really good". We then moved to sharing the Margherita pizza. Once again, it was Ok, but that's about it. All were cooked well, but just lacked seasoning/ flavor. Yes, all three of us love cooking, so perhaps we are particular, but when we go out to dinner we look for food that a professional chef can do better than we can do at home.
google avatar

King Y.

Yelp
Great place, one of our favorite places. We used to stop when driving between Boston and NY. But can't anymore, the speeding tickets that Pawtucket issues through their cameras just isn't worth the hassle. $50 for going 30mph in a supposed 20mph zone. The food is great, but sorry, I hope they can change the cities policy, I know it is going to keep one customer away.
google avatar

Erica H.

Yelp
Unbelievable from start to finish. The service, ambience and everything we ordered to eat was perfect.. from presentation to taste. The wine selection was also on point. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Diane M.

Yelp
I really liked this place my friend chose. It had nice casual ambience. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. First we ordered calamari. He wasn't crazy over it but I absolutely loved it. It is the best I've had in RI . I then ordered grilled shrimp, which were a little over cooked. But the martini w st Germaine was beyond perfect. I'd come back time and again for that.

Yelp
We went to Avenue N on NYE, and it was fabulous! The food and service was top notch without being too intrusive. The drink and dinner suggestions were perfect. We're definitely looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Yummy yummy yummy!! Visited twice since the reopening of indoor seating and was very impressed. Went once for food and was blown away by the fried chicken buns (in korean bao style). The server was very attentive and had recommended them to us. The drinks were also very good- tried the gin cocktail and was impressed by the dry flavors and and garnish. The next time I went just for drinks and again had a phenomenal time. The service was excellent and the drinks were strong and flavorful. Will definitely be going back the next time I'm in PVD.

Yelp
My wife took me out for my 50th birthday. Saw the many positive reviews. We lived in the area before buying a house which made it a bit nostalgic. The waitress brought over complimentary glasses of champagne to start the celebration. That was very nice and unexpected for sure. We love reds so we selected a bottle of the JUGGERNAUT Cabernet. Ordered the special. Short rib pappardelle was delicious. For dessert a flourless chocolate cake that was divine. We'd certainly come back again for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
We've been to the other Avenue N and were told that this one was better. And yes, we agree! In all honesty, would give it 4 1/2 stars but happy to round it up as it's been a while since we've had a good meal out. Honestly, the menu is a bit eclectic. But I agree that it was all good. Had the crispy oysters which were good and also ordered the steak and mushroom pizza which got a lot of attention. It was pretty dense with cheese and delish. Definitely recommended! We also ordered the scallops, which were pretty good. Could have had a bit more sear for my taste but still very good. Also ordered the pierogies, which were tasty and the Creole swordfish, which my son loved. Any time everyone is happy with the meal, I consider it a win. So 5 stars it is. Coming back next time I want food that is predictably tasty.

Yelp
I've been running by this restaurant in the evenings and had to see what was drawing people to this place. The staff was friendly and quick. The atmosphere was great. The food was solidly good. I got the cubanelle pepper rellenos to start. They were cooked perfectly and the "eggplant chorizo" filling was super rich and complex. This was my favorite part of the meal. My wife got the salmon, which was solid and well-cooked. I had the scallops which were also well-cooked but didn't wow me flavor wise. Overall, a hip spot with good food. Great for a date or night out with friends.

Jen F.

Yelp
I tried this place for the first time a couple of weeks ago and will definitely be returning. The kung pao brussel sprouts were the best brussel sprouts I've ever eaten. The scallops were also delicious. My friend ordered the pepperoni pizza (pictured). I didn't try it but she loved it.

Joanne C.

Yelp
I have been to this restaurant a half a dozen times and really enjoyed it. In fact, I have introduced it to friends. Unfortunately, my last visit this week was disappointing. My companion and I ordered the short rib, a dish I loved on a previous visit. Each of us received a few pieces of fatty/grissly meat lost in a bowl of gnocchi. Some of the rib meat could not be cut, never mind chewed. The price per dish was north of thirty dollars which just compounded the disappointment. I expected the hefty price for the meal and drink when I come to this restaurant (the bill for two glasses of wine, one salmon meal, soup and salad with tip came to a hundred bucks) but the value needs to be there. We will give it another try in the future, but for now it won't be in our top three.

Yelp
This place is so quaint, located at the corner (formerly the French restaurant Rue DLS) right near Blackstone Blvd. I was there for a work get together and it was a great experience, the staff was attentive throughout. I tried one of the cocktails from the menu it was really good (I can't recall what the name was). The appetizers were so good, the cauliflower, brussel sprouts and calamari are must dos. Even the oysters (fried on the shells presented over salt). The pizzas were yummy, they have a secret pizza that was probably Big Mac and it was good, the crust is kind of crispy and flaky. I look forward to trying entrees there next time!

Sasha A.

Yelp
This was our first time here, walked in around 5:30 on a Friday. I was a little surprised at how small the space was. There is patio seating out front which was full. The bar seating and at least the tables behind the bar are very close together. I see pictures and reviews saying the tables are spaced out. I didn't see that in the bar area the tables are extremely close. We had a couple drinks and split the margarita pizza with pepperoni. The pizza was delicious and generous with the toppings. It could have been a little more firmer in the middle. The toppings did slide off trying to get it onto the plate. It is a large pizza and easily shared for an appetizer. While our drinks were kept full we weren't ever asked how the pizza was. The dirty dishes were never taken away until we received the bill. Parking looks like it could be an issue when it's busy. We will have to come back to try more food.

Yelp
It's so so so so good. So good that I often get the same dang things over and over again because they're...so good. Little Gem Salad: My favorite salad in all the land. Tangy, yummy, satisfying, and zesty. Steak & Mushroom Pizza: It's so delish and decadent you WILL be bringing home leftovers. Gourmet all the way. The cocktails (specialty and otherwise) are expertly done, too. The service throughout is friendly, outgoing, and fast. They also do an amazing job with COVID restrictions. Make a reservation and go, go, go.

Jesse D.

Yelp
Great food. Great bartenders. All around great local spot. Try the stuffies and the cheeseburger.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great meal here. Apps: kung Pao brussslls and the pork belly skewers. Entrees: salmon and short rib gnocchi. Skipped desert but the carrot cake sounded nice. Drinks: only fans and vibe check. I didn't care for the names of the drinks but they were tasty and different. Sweeter but I enjoy vodka. The food was excellent. The Brussels had a heavy sauce but it was welcomed for me. Sweet and savory. The skewers were sticky and cooked perfectly paired with fresh bao buns. Pickles and a sauce. I'd get both again. The salmon was cooked perfectly. The crab seemed to be a bisque under the rice. Clever and tasty. I had the gnocchi. I prefer more a sear on my gnocchi but the dish was nostalgic of a pot pie with that creamy sauce. The short rib was soft and amazing. The meal was complete. The place is quaint and cute upscale enough and welcoming for casual. I'd go again.

Yelp
Wow! First time here . Starting with creative cocktails and then amazing appetizers ... We had the pork belly skewers and brisket sliders. Incredible !!! I wish I could describe how wonderful this culinary experience was. Main entree's of the crispy fluke , eggplant parmigiana and burger were such a delight and delicious!! Stuffed but we had the carrot cake for dessert . Ahhhh!!! Can't wait to return ! And thank you Amy for showing us the pantry ! And the chocolate chip cookies !! Amazing !

Yelp
Stopped in on a busy Friday night. I had a glass of white wine. The harissa meatballs were delicious. The bartender had an incredible pair of new glasses! Comfortable and classy! I'll be back

Yelp
Good spot for drinks/food on Hope street. Came here to grab something quick. Got the flannel season and the luck of the draw. The flannel season was perfectly balanced and was quite good. The luck of the draw is similar to a Manhattan and was quite strong. Also tried the Lippitt Collins, which was light and refreshing. For food, I got the Nashville hot chicken buns which were amazing. They should def bring that back on the menu. Also tried the salmon special with Brussel sprout leaves, asparagus and potatoes. The salmon was prepared well, and overall tasted quite good, though bit pricey for 34$. Overall good experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely restaurant with two great qualities; the food and the impeccable and welcoming service by hostess and our waitress Sydney. This was our first try with friends and we were all impressed from the cocktails to the New Bedford scallops over Risotto to freshly brewed decaf coffee and dessert. One of the best meals we've experienced lately in and around the Providence area. We'll be back!
google avatar

Dennis P.

Yelp
Great dining experience!! The food and the plating was top of the line. Our appetizers which consisted of Black Bean Tortilla Soup and Rock Shrimp Dim Sum was a perfect starter as was the Takes Two To Mango cocktail which was a tropical delight . A special shout out to China the superb mixologist who was meticulous on creating these amazing libations. Also I recommend the Braised Beef Short Ribs as an entree. The ribs were lean, seasoned perfectly and cut like butter with the fork. The atmosphere was cool, hip and modern and the service was outstanding. I can definitely highly recommend Avenue N Providence. Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Ted H.

Yelp
Food is great. Two tips: in the winter, the seats near that door which keeps opening, that's a non-starter, wind and cold make those tables near the door not viable. Also, last night, a Friday...way, way too noisy--people yelling to be heard by one another, maybe the music is too loud and that amps-up the need to speak over the music? Too noisy, period.

Warren C.

Yelp
Great food and menu and reasonable prices. Also had a great tap beer. I didn't eat dessert.

Yelp
How have I forgotten to review my current favorite restaurant in Providence. I really love everything about it. Location because it isn't awful to locate a parking spot. Staff are all excellent and most importantly, the food is always amazing. They also have great cocktails. The sauce that comes with the oysters is outstanding. I ordered a flatbread (maybe steak?) that had a similar tasting sauce. They have good options and even though I can be sad that something I liked is no longer on the menu, the replacements take that spot quickly. Thank you for Avenue N for being top notch.
google avatar

Cailyne G.

Yelp
This place is by far one of my favorite restaurants. Every time I have been there, the food has been absolutely amazing. I also like that their menu changes so there's always the option to try something new. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This restaurant is on another level! The service, the drinks, the food -ALL are OUTSTANDING!!! I actually ate here twice this week because the flavors and uniqueness of the menu selection is exquisitely planned and executed! Our party has tried the Kung Pao Brussel Sprouts, Crispy Walrus and Carpenter Oysters, Rumford Biscuit and Chicken Dumpling Soup, Tomato Bisque Soup, Kung Pao Cauliflower, Pan Seared New Bedford Sea Scallops, Steak & scallion pizza, Butternut Honey BBQ Pizza, Short Rib Pappardelle, Pan Seared Filet of Salmon- each dish was literally cooked to perfection with a taste out-of-this-world! Kudos to the Chef!!!! We will be regulars here for sure!

Ruth N.

Yelp
Staff is wonderful.. small and loud..similar to the Rumford location.the entrees were a disappointment..

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants. The service is always impeccable. The drinks are phenomenal and the food is consistently creative and delicious! It's in my top 5 favorite places for date night! I highly recommend the no. 3 cosmo it is dangerously delicious! As well as the kung pao brussel sprouts, roasted corn soup, grilled little gem salad and the chicken entree. Everything is delicious!

Yelp
Fabulous food. Great cocktails. Friendly service. Nice atmosphere. What more do you need? Very seasonal and fresh ingredients put together in an inventive way. Would definitely go again, although it is a bit pricey.

I was pretty excited that avenue N was here and offering outdoor seating! We went with some friends this past weekend. We made a reservation, but the wait time can get very long. (Some people in line were told nothing available until 8:45pm, and that was just before 7). We shared the pork belly spring rolls (good, but the meat itself could have been more flavorful), the calamari (nothing special but nice to snack on) and each got our own entrees. I ordered the hand pulled noodles with short rib. These were incredible the first bite but then just good. That first bite blows you away but as you keep eating, the broth/sauce feels a little too sweet and acidic. The short rib is cooked to perfection, however. My husband had the pizza and loved it but said it was very "suburban" - a lot of cheese and the crust is nothing to write home about, but pizza is always pizza and satisfying. Ambiance is good - we thought the street would be loud since we were outdoors, but it wasn't bad. The service was mostly prompt (our drinks took a while, but everything else was very timely) and very kind. Desserts, though, are a big pass for me. We ordered the flourless chocolate cake and I honestly think cheesecake factory can do better. Our friends had the tiramisu and said it was, indeed, tiramisu.
