St. Johns Italian Restaurant Gabagool Closes July 17 | Eater Portland

"I watched it grow from a North Mississippi food cart specializing in Italian sandwiches and pastas into a St. Johns restaurant over nine years, becoming a cult favorite fueled by Reddit fervor. When it opened it stood out as one of the few neighborhood spots serving handmade pasta and the only place selling piadina filled with capicola — its namesake gabagool. For five and a half years locals sat on the patio twirling pappardelle and spearing potato gnocchi; the kitchen cured its own pancetta, made its own sausage, and hung house-made pasta, producing dishes like tagliatelle with braised spring rabbit and spaghetti al’ Amatriciana with house-cured guanciale. At the bar I found cocktails built on infused simple syrups and house-made limoncello alongside standards like Campari. After a brief pandemic closure it reopened for takeout in May 2020, added a large outdoor patio, and returned to indoor dining in summer 2021, but on July 17 the owners announced on Instagram that the restaurant would close because “We’ve been unable to reach an agreement on a lease for our space,” and asked patrons to stop by in its final weeks to share good times and positive memories." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

It was my first time there, and I will be going back. The menu had so many selections that i need to try. The atmosphere was packed but still nice, and the service was excellent. The server was patient and caring. The photo 📸 spot is super cute, and the food was good and plenty of it.

Google
Lovely brunch with my daughter. The cold brew coffee was on point. Service is always great here. Food was amazing with huge portions.

Google
Nice breakfast spot for all types of skillets, French toast and big fluffy pancakes. Very nice atmosphere for families and lots of seating. Super nice patio if you like eating outside. Super nice staff and clean bathrooms.

I'm visiting from AZ and my sister said this place was really good! I had The Outlaw, eggs over hash browns, biscuits and gravy. My grandson got Banana Split French Toast. So good, I highly recommend this place!!

Google
First time today.... The food was delicious!! Definitely we will be back! I had the Gypsy skillet and berry tart pancakes. My husband had the Bad Wolf skillet with banana split French toast.

Google
A very great place with great service! Never came here until now! Very big portion sizes it’s worth the money you pay for. There is breakfast lunch and dinner here. With a bar for other people too. Great place to come and just chill with some friends.

My party of three went for Sunday breakfast. Although there was a waitlist, the line went fast! I think the music helped the wait time fly. Paul made the best 90s and 2000s Playlist. I grooved from the lobby to the table and throughout breakfast. The food was delicious. We had the Southern Skill special with the carrot cake pancakes, the Veggie Skillet with white toast, and the Steak Skillet with the pineapple upside down pancakes. We left completely full and with half of our food left. We topped the meal with Peach Moscato Kit. It was great!

Google
What a wonderful menu! Unexpected for a breakfast lunch dinner. A full bar! Creative cocktails! A breakfast skillet with stuffing? Yes! And it was delicious! You will not believe the selection of pancakes and French toast. The food came out unbelievably fast. I love that they leave the coffee carafe at your table as well as a bottle of ice water for refills. It's always handy and you don't have to wait for a waitress. Prices were reasonable for the giant portions

Yelp
Needless to say Five Star joint. I need to have a location in Stevensville Michigan and Surprise Arizona. Took the 3 grandkids there yesterday. Yes it's a costly please put the food is damn good. Well whenever we go back and visit the kids will head there for breakfast. and that waitress would just knock your socks off. That little lady knew why she woke up and came to work. All cleaned up and prettier than a brand new shiny dime. Could've been all the jewelry on her hands but the rest of her was right in line. I talked this one through, so if there's mistakes forgive me.

Yelp
Wow, this is the best brunch I've had in NWI by far! We stopped by on a Sunday around noon and there was about a 20 min wait. Once seated service was prompt and our food came faster than expected. All of our food was amazing. My son's French toast from the toddler menu was incredible and could have fed me. The egg tacos were also incredible. Overall, AVGO is a great value for the quality and preparation of food.

Yelp
Can't believe it took me this long to review our favorite breakfast spot! Avego is dangerously close to home and the portions are HUGE. We keep coming back for the berry waffles, all the skillets, and biscuits and gravy. Everything hits the spot every time. Bring an appetite and maybe sweat pants.

Yelp
It's 1:30 on Palm Sunday and the place is still hoping. The menu looks interesting. Tons of fun French toast , pancake, and crepes choices. Plus, they leave the pot of coffee and water carafe on the table! Portions are large. The garden skillet(vegan) comes with a generous dollop of avocado. Our pineapple pancakes were fine. The 3 links of sausage probably sourced locally is plump, meaty, and juicy. Our server Tanner was prompt and attentive. Avgo is worth the 5 stars.

Yelp
Came here for brunch and it didn't disappoint. I had the skillet and pancakes and both were very good. All the ingredients seemed fresh and the staff was friendly.
google avatar

Melody B.

Yelp
I was not kidding in my last review when I said I had to come back ASAP and try their breakfast because lunch was so outstanding! Breakfast didn't disappoint either. My husband and I got here at around 8am. It was somewhat busy, but we were seated immediately. I ordered the Gingerbread Pancakes from their monthly features menu and wow, those pancakes need a permanent menu spot. It tasted just like a gingerbread cookie in pancake form. It was a perfect breakfast for the holiday season. The portion was gigantic, so it made another breakfast meal for me the next day. We don't live in the area, but I foresee AVGO being a restaurant we frequent when we visit my in laws.

Yelp
Such a fun brunch vibe! Went on a Saturday afternoon and despite the volume of people waiting we were seated within 15 minutes which was great. Opted for the mimosa kit with 3 different juices all of which were fresh tasting and added layers to the typical orange option. No issues with any of the food EXCEPT the "crab cakes" were more like an interpretation of one and resembled more of a fritter with 95% breading and less than 5% crab which seemed like imitation. I'd love to go back but I'm staying far far away from that one! Would love to try more of their sweeter options.

Yelp
I have heard good things about AVGO and am glad I finally got to see for myself. The restaurant itself has a lot of natural light. There are plenty of breakfast and brunch options ranging from classic to unique and modern. We walked in at 9 on a Saturday and were sat right away, but the waiting area was full by the time we left around 10. I opted for the gypsy skillet with ham, onions, peppers, hash browns, gravy, and cheese. Topped with 4 eggs and a side of pancakes, this was enough food to last me 3 meals and was absolutely delicious! My friend chose the chickpea avocado toast which came with 4 generous slices of bread piled high with avocado, chickpeas, tomatoes, onions, microgreens, balsamic glaze, and feta. I also liked that they give you a full bottle of water and carafe of coffee so you don't have to wait on staff for a refill, though they were definitely attentive throughout our meal.

Yelp
AVGO is my favorite part about coming to visit my parents in Lowell-but don't tell them I said that. It's always busy when I come here but that doesn't affect the service or the wait time. I've had the eggs Benedict and probably is the best one I've had in a long time and another time I had the berry crepe thing and wow- that was delicious.

Joyce M.

Yelp
A first timer and easy to enter your name on a waitlist. We only had to wait 10 minutes for a table and were seated in a comfortable booth. The menu has an extensive selection of various breakfast dishes. The server came quickly with a pot of coffee and water carafe which stayed on the table. The server was friendly and knowledgeable on a question my Sister had. I ordered YaYas skillet which was amazing! Huge portion which I took a great deal of it home with me. Sister ordered the pigs in a blanket consisting of four pancakes, eggs and bacon served taco style which was another huge portion. Coffee was very good. Will definitely come back to try something else.

Yelp
Great food & fast service. Highly recommend this restaurant Music is also upbeat! Paul & staff are tge best!
google avatar

Traci W.

Yelp
My only complaint is that they need a bigger parking lot because it is a bear to find a spot at this popular breakfast/brunch destination. Why? Because it is phenomenal! They have the guest flow down to a science. Even though we had to wait until our entire party arrived, the wait for a table was only about 10 minutes. The service was great. And the food, OMG! The red cakes (red velvet pancakes) are a 10/10, I HIGHLY recommend. I forgot to get a picture before I dived right in because they looked so good and tasted better than they looked. All I can say is just go! Go to AVGO. Thank me later :)

Yelp
We've dined here several times and have enjoyed each meal. This is our families go to brunch spot when we come visit in the area. We were disappointed in the service today since we never got another pot of hot coffee to enjoy with our pancakes. We waited a while and eventually had to get up to ask for the pot we requested. We gobbled up the entire meal and enjoyed every bite.

John M.

Yelp
Luv this place It's always busy Food is awesome huge portions always have to take home leftovers But that's a good thing

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday morning at about 11:30 AM to a very long and large waiting area full of people Good luck finding parking as well. Even though there seems to be a lot of parking you actually have to wait for someone to leave to get into a space because they are limited. The restaurant is located what looks like to be a commercial office building on the first floor As soon as you get in, you need to digitally check in and place yourself on the waitlist We waited a total of 27 minutes with no place to sit because it was that crowded When we finally sat down, although our waitress was a little slow on the uptake, the food was faster than waiting for her to take our order The food arrived super fresh and hot order taken perfectly, and these portions are super big and generous I have to say the food is tasty. It looks great, and it is great value. I would definitely come back here again because the quality of food is good Now I know how to prepare for the crowd and the weaker time Also, they happen to see us right next to the most Instagram, part of the restaurant, where they set up this bench and a light fixture which I included in this review, because we were literally right next to it, and there were crowds of people standing around, waiting to get their perfect photo

Yelp
Great service. Excellent food with HUGE portions. Maybe share. Ambiance wonderful. Restaurant packed but you can still converse. Price is fair.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Food is outstanding!!! Well presented. Always new and creative entree's. The servers are always friendly and kind. The weekends are very busy but things still move well. Obvious the owner takes pride in this establishment and truly cares about your experience. Went down the street to omelette house and what a huge disappointment. This is and will be my go to!!!
google avatar

Don G.

Yelp
This is the best breakfast place in NWI very family oriented portions are big enough to share. Well worth the price and they have a full service bar for great Bloody Mary's and mimosas. For as busy as they are wait times are not bad.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Food had always been above par. Service has always been excellent. Ambiance is perfect. Great food, great service, very clean.. Paige is a rock star and Paul is an amazing owner/host... Always has a handshake and greeting for whoever walks in. Honestly one of the first places that's been perfect. In my opinion.
google avatar

Robin A.

Yelp
Great service, digital check in that you can monitor your position in the queue. Huge portions- 3 meals for me. is delish. Music is a bit loud, you can converse over it, but if you have hearing difficulty it may be an issue. Family friendly, great diverse menu.
google avatar

Jeneane B.

Yelp
This is our third time at Avgo and every time we have been here the food and service have consistently been amazing.

Jenny R.

Yelp
Food is do good, and the service is great. It also is clean and modern. They have unique food options.

Yelp
I was visiting my old stomping grounds for the weekend and one of my besties suggested this place for a lil Sunday brunch moment. We're from a town in the middle of nowhere in Illinois, so we had to cross the border to check this place out. Two words = worth it. It was about a twenty minute wait, but I feel like it was a little shorter than that. Maybe the time flew by quicker since I was with my favorite people in the world. Anyway, we sat and the place is super cute, y'all! The place is bright and open with a lot of places to sit. The place was packed though. That's a good thing though because they deserve all the business they get. Their menu is so vast, but in a good way. They truly have something for everyone. Many many options for both sweet and savory breakfasts. If I see oats on the menu, trust I'll be getting them. So it got the old fashioned oats and a side of scrambled eggs. The side of eggs filled an entire plate! A plate of eggs for $3-$4? STEAL! I live in Arizona so the prices on this menu were to die for. I was able to get so much food for like $12. The oats were super creamy, and the fruit was ripe and sweet. The eggs were flavorful and fluffy. 10/10 meal for me. And my friends agreed. I'll attach pictures so you can see what everyone else ordered. But everyone LOVED their meals. We got a variety of sweet and savory dishes. I got rounds of, "this is delicious," "I loved this," and "this is so good!" When we were finished. The food came out quick, the service was attentive and friendly, and we had a grand time.

Lauren M.

Yelp
Great breakfast and lunch spot in Saint John! Worth the brunch rush wait! Piping hot soup every time. Coffee is great. Quick service, hot food. Can't complain.

Adam Z.

Yelp
There was practically no wait! Which i thought was awesome for the amount of people at this breakfast spot. Checking in was seamless and easy to follow. There is a kiosks at the front entrance that can be easily overlooked if other guests are using it. It is really hard to flag down the people who work here, mainly because it's hard to understand which ones are working as compared to which ones are just guests entering. The food came within minutes of ordering which was nice, the servers and baristas are definitely on top of their job here. I had a complicated drink order and the bartender ran from around the counter to the booth we were seated at just to make sure she got the drink order right. I felt she really went above and beyond in to carry put the perfect drink service. Exceptional service.

Yelp
I don't normally make it out this way for food but it was a nice spot for breakfast. It had an extensive menu, that included alcoholic breakfast drinks as well as a number of coffee options. I had oatmeal with fresh fruit and it did the trick. The coffee was pretty decent, too, as I went with the drip. There is ample space in the dining room but it there was a line out the door by 10am on Sunday. The service was good - our server was friendly, which is always a nice thing especially in the mornings.

Kevin M.

Yelp
The service was great to start. Food was very good. Server was attentive. Made our group very comfortable
google avatar

Nina E.

Yelp
Food was delicious and ambiance was lively. Great space to dine with fam and friends. Service was decent, yet respectful. The server was super sweet. The sunroom dining area is my fav, yet all tables are cool. We also had drinks from the menu. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
This place is getting it right for breakfast and lunch. Super clean, food is on point and staff HUSTLES. I'm an early riser so I love that I can get lunch items super early when mostly people still want breakfast.

Jen B.

Yelp
Avgo, my favorite local restaurant. The staff is always incredibly pleasant, and I have to give a special shoutout to Mimi, the bartender--she's fantastic! Paul and Pete have also been amazing and are extremely helpful when it comes to planning events. Not only do I love Avgo, but I also highly recommend their other restaurants: Umi, Prime, and Theo's. Each has its unique charm and delicious offerings. If you haven't been, I definitely encourage you to check them out!
google avatar

Stella D.

Yelp
The food here is good but some of the things here aren't the best. The service is very good too, but the line to get in is atrocious. The ambiance here is mostly maybe here or there it's can be a little negative overall I give it a 4.
google avatar

Yolanda H.

Yelp
Food is very good. The service is awesome. Waiters are very kind and knowledgeable about the food. Linsey is the best.
google avatar

google avatar

Kimberly E.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the portions are large. Come hungry. They have monthly specials to try too.
google avatar

Tabitha W.

Yelp
We tried to come here once on a weekend and the wait was out the door, so I'm glad we came back during the week when it was less crowded. Honestly, the photos just really speak for themselves. All of our food was beautiful and delicious - and plentiful!
google avatar

Kim A.

Yelp
AVGO is delish and deserves the regions best breakfast! Portions of breakfast and lunch are very generous
google avatar

Wala I.

Yelp
I was a regular there. I'd go every Sunday because it was a REALLY good spot to have breakfast or lunch, until it wasn't anymore. The last few time we've been, there cups were not clean. Plates and silverware had a very funny smell to it made it hard for me to enjoy my coffee or my food. I haven't been pleased for the few times I've been..it's actually disappointing.

Heather M.

Yelp
Amazing food. Even my kids love it. The have the best French toast and really fun foods too.
google avatar

Lee G.

Yelp
I've been there a couple of times and as always been greeted by the Hostess or Manager Paul who has always been gracious and has gone out of his way to please my group that I'm with eating with. We always ask for Debbie who is an excellent server and always continues to come back to the table to ask if we need anything or if everything is okay. The food and Management are 5 Star!!!
google avatar

Mae B.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, quick service, friendly staff, big portions of food even for kid's item.

Yelp
The portions are HUGE. The food is bomb. Service is great. Price is good. What more can I ask for? Nothing!
google avatar

Marie H.

Yelp
Delicious food, excellent staff and beautiful place. Always clean! Yes it gets crowded but they move quickly. The selection of food is amazing and I haven't had a bad meal ever. The mimosas are the best!
google avatar

William D.

Yelp
We ate at the bar. The food and drinks were great. The servers/ bartenders are very nice.
google avatar

Veronica F.

Yelp
The portions are insane! Tried both the berry tart pancakes and the upside down pineapple pancakes, and both were amazing. Would definitely recommend getting something to share! Our server was very sweet, and our food came out pretty quickly. We went on a Wednesday morning at about 10:30 and there was no wait. AVGO is the perfect place for brunch, and are great at accommodating large and small parties.

Marty H.

Yelp
What happened? I've been going here for years and getting breakfast. I love their French toast but I just tried it today and it was awful. The bread was terrible. It tasted nothing like what I'm used to getting. I guess if it isn't broke, change it anyways.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
AVGO is a really cute place for breakfast or lunch. I really liked the atmosphere and decor. It was bright, clean, and colorful. They were pretty busy when we got there, but we could tell the staff was a bit backed up with open tables yet no one being seated due to being busy setting up for a large party and cashing out guests. At one point, one of the servers came up to the manager and asked, "what's going on? Can I seat people? What are we doing?" They seemed a little overwhelmed. After we were seated, we learned it was our servers first day, and she did amazing! We had a great dining experience. Their breakfast menu is larger than their lunch menu, but everything looked really yummy! The portions were HUGE! I was a little disappointed by the avgolemono. The menu said it was the same as Theo's, which is my favorite, but it tasted more like a creamy potato soup that had rice instead of potato. It wasn't lemony at all. The loukomada French toast tasted just like loukamades - if you've never had that/don't know what it is, trust me. You'll love this. The omelette was giant, and the red velvet pancake with Nutella was decadent. Overall, I enjoyed AVGO. I'm sure I'll be back again in the future!

Andrea M.

Yelp
I have been here 3 times and every time the staff is amazing. Our waitress is always Great and the food is Amazing. Haven't had a bad experience or a bad dish can't wait to go back.
