Montrose Dive Bar Featured in ‘The Wedding Singer’ to Reopens on Friday | Eater LA

"One of Montrose’s oldest and most storied bars, housed in a 90‑year‑old building that became the current spot in 1971, blends decades of local lore with thoughtful preservation by its new owners. The location has cropped up in films such as Old School and The Wedding Singer and is tied to colorful anecdotes — an underage Karen Carpenter reportedly snuck in to perform early in her career, and the bar once hosted gambling and other illicit activity, complete with an old doorbell used to warn patrons to hide evidence. After being sold in 2017 the space was refreshed with a new pool table, upgraded booths, a restored mid‑century fireplace, and new TVs; the atmosphere remains jukebox‑driven rather than cocktail‑forward, with occasional live music, a full bar, and rotating beers on tap. The current ownership group consists of local partners (including Jordan A. Nedeff and his wife Marcy, formerly of Magnolia House in Pasadena, plus Michael Wright and brothers Jason and Peter Filardi), and hours are weekdays 4 p.m.–2 a.m. and weekends 10 a.m.–2 a.m." - Mona Holmes

Google
The bar is absolutely amazing. The bartenders know how to delicious drinks. When I walked in, I went straight to the bar to order my drink. The bartender quickly came to me to take my drink order. I asked for an Old Fashion and the bartender jumped right to it. The inside has a very cool vibe. There is a pool table and also a stage. The bar also has a Jukebox that plays awesome music. The bar offers outdoor seating in the front and private area in the back. Definitely recommend stopping by you will not be disappointed.

Google
Amazing. Perfect place to go for a drink that’s close to home, super cute n divey, friendly people, nice bartenders, STAGE FOR LIVE MUSIC, small intimate atmosphere, diversity (thank God!) amongst its patrons… just the best of the best. Love it 😍

Google
Fantastic bar. Great service and an incredibly friendly staff. Upscale drinks with a vintage vibe in a freshly renovated bar. Dine into this throwback to the golden age of neighborhood bars.

Google
This place looks like old English pubs or Chicago style al capone's bar. Very friendly staff reasonable prices and nice atmosphere with live music on Saturdays.

Google
The Wedding singer bar in Montrose. It’s called Avignones and its a great place to enjoy the Hollywood history of film and good fun reasonably priced drinks and great music from the 70’s 80’s In LA this it the original dive bar.

Google
7/2024 Update: disappointed when they took out pool tables, but nice additional interior improvements. Unfortunately, we were served drinks today that were more expensive than they have been and had no alcohol, so I think I will be checking out some of the other remaining hang outs from now on. 😞 no frills, but fun place to go and hang out for a few. Great location. reasonable drink prices.

Yelp
Have never had a bad experience here, the bartenders (and the owner) are cool and laid back and the jukebox is nice to play a favorite tune without getting skipped or snobbed off.

Yelp
Best Old Fashioned hands down! Great service by the Bartender Chris. Good array of drinking option and they have a jukebox that lets you set the vibe, awesome!
google avatar

Yelp
Super fun and it gives off those incredibly local dive bars vibes. You can play pool here too. This is exactly what you would expect from a dive bar, no need to go into detail.

Yelp
We went to a local event that wasn't great, so we had to look for another place to spend the night. And it was here! The bartenders are SO nice! They worked with us to make cocktails that were featured on the website but not quite in season yet. There's no kitchen for food, but you're allowed to bring take-out inside, and they recommended a local pizza place that delivers late in the night. Also that night the DJ was amazing!!! We were on the dance floor until our feet hurt (and we needed some Pizza). His ig is wrld.hero if you want to check what nights he's there! Would highly recommend ending (or starting???) Your night here if you're in the area! Good vibes all around.

Yelp
Fun local bar to hang out with friends for a drink, watch some live music in an intimate setting and drink your troubles away! Great staff and a cool owner that knows how to take care of his customers!

Yelp
Charming, local, relaxed, and fun. Only suggestion is to add some decent wines to the menu.

Yelp
Just discovered this gem in Montrose. Bartenders are super friendly. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
Barely any women in the bar at all. Very bro-like, could be the really horrible language being yelled across the bar by male patrons and bartenders alike. Christian is literally greeting customers by saying "hi motherfucker." The menu online is totally fake, they have no idea how to make any of their "signature" cocktails. Idk kind of a bummer. Halloween decorations are super cool tho. Cool place for locals.

Yelp
Michael the bartender was awesome, his Whiskey sour and Moscow Mule drinks were sooooo good!!! I've had them elsewhere are they were not ittttt lol Awesome vibe all night. ***Monday nights they have open mic! ;)

Yelp
My friends and I were excited to come here, but the bartender's rude attitude ruined the experience. Despite being of legal age with valid IDs, we were treated like an inconvenience while others received friendly service. Everyone here is 40 years old & plus. My friends and I are 25. The condescending behavior made us uncomfortable and unwelcome. We called immediately after to voice our concerns, so hope they make some changes. Unless there's a staff change, we absolutely won't be returning.

Yelp
Fun place! I need to fill up the rest of this dialogue box with Text in order to be able to post it. I need to have 85 characters and I'm way short.

Yelp
AMAZING place. new to the area so we were scouting out some of the local bars + this place was immediately everything we wanted. very casual, extremely kind staff, just an overall wonderful time ! has been an amazing way to meet fellow locals and a GREAT place for musicians especially to network with each other

Yelp
Went with friends for their Tuesday karaoke night. While the bar is very retro and has a great feel, the stage is in an odd location inside--anyone singing plays to the area dominated by a pool table. I'll return to sit in a banquette and sip cocktails with friends, but not for any planned entertainment. Update: Business owner responded quickly to my one complaint. And it turns out plans to adjust what I saw in a longterm expansion. Kudos for the quick response and looking forward to seeing how this venue morphs into a live performance space.

Yelp
$2 beers? $15 Lagunitas IPA pitchers? I don't care if the $2 beers are Pabst. I'm sold! Avignone's is a pretty cool spot with a lot of character. I stumbled upon this bar a couple weeks ago while a group of my friends attended a book club a couple blocks away. It was actually my first time in the city of Montrose. I'm a fan. I needed a place to hang out at for a couple of hours and Avignone's provided. In fact, with a Saturday day-time happy hour, I was more than satisfied. Aside from the cheap happy hour drinks, I found the decor and ambiance here very enjoyable. The seating was comfortable and the dim lights gave the bar a nice feel to it. Service was great and the music they had playing was on point. Unfortunately, they don't have a kitchen, but they do allow you to bring in your own food. My friend and I went to the pizza place next door and enjoyed our slices here at the bar! If you find yourself in Montrose, definitely stop in. Very friendly, and very affordable, especially during happy hour.

Yelp
Fun spot for a drink or two. Locals hang out here to connect. It's a good time and it's great to have them in the community. Service is quick.

Yelp
Cool little dive bar. Dim lighting and pool table set the mood for a drank!! Cool spot to grab some drinks with a friend or your better half and shoot the Sh!t.

Yelp
Some things get better with time, others well, not so much. In this case, the latter applies. I had been a regular @ Avignones's Fridays 80s night. DJ Alina was spinning them bangers and a great time was had. It was all good until one Friday night there was a stage added. This not only decreased the amount of free space for the clientele to dance but the bloody billiards table was relegated to the other side of the dance area. This ended up leaving one third of the space previously available for dancing. Don't get me wrong, I love a good game of pool but, really? If people went to Avignones for the billiards, then why have a dance floor!! Let me ask you to contemplate this and think on it. .... Yes! You have surmised correctly! They go for the drinks and the dancing. I can take a gamble that on a hot Friday and Saturday that billiards table probably brings the owner a hefty $50! On my most recent trip to Avignones, I also noticed that DJ Alina is no longer there. I was told "no more 80's night." What!...How can it be possible? That's the sole reason I searched out Avignones in the first place. I felt safe and happy dancing to music from an era that NEVER gets old. Instead, the new DJ was spinning pure 80s hip hop and running a lot of videos. I love hip hop but, mix it up a bit porfavor. To the owner I say, let's get rid of the table and bring back the 80s with DJ Alina. In summation I say "read the room. Why fix it if it ain't broke! " Peace out.

Yelp
I Walked in with a pre-reserved birthday aspirations and bartender was upset to even serve a drink when we walked in; side note; if your going to be A bartender your facial expression and body language is a big thing, and ... I understand it's 9:35-10 pm no one is trying to stay out that late and working as bartender on thanksgiving night I understand it's annoying. No one wants to work but damn I understand but Alyssa flip out and YELLED "If your not going to tip on thanksgiving day then don't come Here ever again wtf" her name is Alyssa and I guess her manager is Nicole I totally understand but god damn never seen this before when someone yells at a customer and demands a tip everyone in the bar stoped and stares at Alyssa, straight out of a movie...wow I don't know but I've never had that experience ever at a bar, when I've been forced to tip by intimidation and embarrassing a guest by yelling at them, I will talk to Nicole the manager and hope she talks to Alyssa this is just uncalled for and very unprofessional. And I hate to make this a RACE ISSUE BUT THE COUPLE WERE HISPANIC... I'm a server/bartender myself at a very well know restaurant at a near area much busier than this location one of my bosses actually goes here a lot and I will be sharing this with my store and train my new trainees HOW NOT TO BE, and won't be going here any longer none of my coworkers would ever talk to people in that tone of voice and sorta force them or make them feel like they have to tip....no one is obligated to tip... no one is ever deserving to get yelled like that...

Yelp
I would give this place zero stars if I could. My friends and I came here for a fun night out after dinner, but the bartender treated us with nothing but rudeness and condescension--for no reason other than the fact that we look young. We were very excited to come and planned our night around coming to the bar after. We are all of legal drinking age, had our valid IDs ready, and were nothing but polite, yet the bartender acted like we didn't belong there.Instead of providing decent service, they were dismissive, rolled their eyes, and barely acknowledged us while happily serving other customers. When we came up to the bar to order a drink with our ID's ready, It was clear we were being judged unfairly, which made the entire experience extremely uncomfortable and frustrating. A bar should be welcoming, not a place where paying customers are treated like an inconvenience. Unless they want the customer to be rude back which thanks to the bartenders attitude, we happily matched his rude energy. We gave them a call and voiced our complaints to a very kind lady over the phone which we hope gets somewhere but unfortunately as she claimed the bartender has been there for years so we don't expect much to change. Would love to give this place a try when a different bartender is clocked in. But until then, we definitely won't be back.

Yelp
Cool spot in Montrose. We went there for a Trivia night for our Rotary club, great service and super friendly. We didn't order food because they had ordered pizza from next door so can't post a review for their food.

Yelp
I was charged for call when I asked and RECEIVED well vodka. I brought it to the bartender's attention, he claimed to fix it. The charge on my card the next day was back to the original over charge!! How does that happen!!! Ugh! Don't use a card here! Cash only folks, or just don't go here.

Yelp
I went there on a Tuesday night because I'm a big karaoke nerd and I heard this is the only karaoke show near my home in La Canada Flintridge. Walked right in, the place had plenty of people, karaoke was hoppin' and the bartender greeted me in about 30 seconds after I found an empty stool at the bar. She poured me a solid portion of Jameson and a Pint of 805 and I began to drink in the karaoke and the atmosphere as well as the booze. I can compare this place to various dives with karaoke in Redondo Beach and more recently, Highland Park where I've lived. It's on par with the places I frequented in the South Bay, and a bit cleaner than the Highland Park bars. It was a good karaoke setup too, with the music in the next room from the bar, so if you aren't into the singing you don't get blasted in the face with it like other bars. Quaint back patio allows patrons to bring their drinks outside and have a smoke if they so desire. A plus for this vaper. Oh, and you can get some 'fresh air' out front as well, drink in hand. I had a good time and I will definitely visit again.

Yelp
Crowded, hard to get service and almost had my purse stolen while I was there. We went for a friends birthday and to be honest, regretted choosing this bar. The drinks were ok, can't complain since we did choose basic cocktails that are hard to mess up but don't think we will be back at all.

Yelp
O M G I was left in complete awe after visiting this place last night. Just moved to the area and was super excited to have a dive bar so close to home. However... after the horrible behavior by the bartender Alyssa, I don't believe I will come back. The bar is super chill and was clearly serving a certain type of patron. I planned to have a couple of drinks after thanksgiving dinner to celebrate my birthday and wanted to ensure this place would be open. I passed by to make sure around 6:15 and the place was open. I walked in to speak with the bartender to give her a curtesy heads up about my party of about 10 people who would come around 9/10pm. Alyssa said" they should be open" and since that is not a definite answer, I asked how I could make sure 100%. She then said "well you can call but if i dont answer its because we are closed or its super busy" huh? Really inviting don't you think? This should have been the first red flag. I said thank you and that I would be back later. My party and I arrived around 10:15 and from the start you could see it in her beautiful resting face that she was not having a good day. Even the way she demanded to take all our drink orders when some of us were not ready seemed way too pushy. But we let it go... For some context, many of my guests and I have a background in the service industry, from server to bartender to manager and so on.. I will be the first to say that I HATED SERVING with such a passion and the moment I could become a certified teacher and quit, I did so elated. I have much respect for anyone working in the industry.. it hella sucks.. however... to experience what she did is called harassment and completely unprofessional. From other reviews I have read here, this type of behavior is acceptable because ALYSSA STILL WORKS THERE even after countless people have expressed her terrible service and "bartending" skills. Alyssa even said "i dont give a f*** about no Yelp reviews" -_- yes girl, clearly... Anyways, she yelled and intimidated guests into tipping her or making sure they tip on thanksgiving... Alyssa, not sure where you're from but it is not CA law for tips to be added. This is called a courtesy young lady and as someone who has been stiffed before, I understand how frustrating it can be. HOWEVER it never gives you the right to say anything. I am throwing a wild assumption out there to see if it sticks.. but maybe you shouldn't be working in the service industry.. idk think about it.. maybe your place is elsewhere.. Anyways... i wont be going there ever again if the owner continues to employ these type of unprofessional individuals who verbally assault their patrons and have no real experience in hospitality. Good luck and I hope Alyssa finds what truly fulfills her cause bartending is NOT YOUR CALLING silly girl. To the dude who kept apologizing on her behalf, completely unnecessary and im sorry you've had to CLEARLY do this before..

Yelp
Fantastic spot in the gorgeous la Crescenta Valley area. I wouldn't call it a hole in the wall because I believe it's a staple in our beautiful community. If you want to come in for a good cocktail and take a stroll down a sparkly light Street come on down to this establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
So. Much. Fun!!!!! There was a DJ on Friday night playing the best classic 80s songs. Hipsters dancing and playing pool. Super nice bartenders making super strong drinks. Felt like a date scene from a movie like Pulp Fiction would have been perfect here.
google avatar

Ammar M.

Yelp
The only reason this isn't a 5* review is because when I went there they were very understaffed. That said, if ur looking for a classic, red vinyl booth bar, this is the spot to go to in Montrose.
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
I had a bad experience here a couple months back with a friend who was treated disrespectfully with no other explanation than ethnicity. I left a negative review based on that experience and was threatened by Jordan the owner who said he would pursue litigation based on slander. That's not how Yelp works. I'm sorry your staff is racist. I have a feeling that sort of behavior is strongly encouraged by ownership
google avatar

Yelp
I am a denizen of Montrose bars since 1994. Avignone's has been taken by the body snatchers. Having been the best foothill dive bar for decades, it has changed ownership for the first time to "investors" who "always wanted to own a bar" according to the interviews they gave to reporters. Well, gentlemen, you now have your hobby, but it will not succeed as such. Michael B's review was spot on, but much too kind. The number of single star ratings are piling up. The five stars are likely shills who know one or more of the owners. Please note the completely lame and ineffective responses from the owner with regard to un-skilled bartenders and ridiculously high drink prices. NOTE: this is an update review from a long time fan of the "other" Avignone - before the body snatchers came. Visited the place and here is the disaster we found: 1. bar staff is terribly inattentive, one was surly 2. prices are double the previous levels 3. back bar is sparsely stocked (looks more like Toys 'R Us in their final weeks). 4. the two basic cocktails we had, totally sucked, I think one was missing the booze, completely. 5. 8-9 other customers who looked like they were "rode hard and put away wet" Maybe the prozac wasn't really working for them. 6. Bartender had to get out a book to figure out how to make a margarita from the "well" booze, incredible. 7. $10 for a well drink with each component carefully measured - idiotic. 8. Someone is being nice to someone's grandmother by having her mix drinks while reading the Bartender's Drink Book - pathetic staffing. The previous owner made no effort to have a theme to the place and that made it a dive bar. Guys, putting a neon sign that says "welcome to the jungle" was whose idea? "Jungle" has many connotations in today's world and not all positive. Having 20 albums covers from the 60's and 70's is someone's idea of "retro"? It just screams cheap. How does the wall decor fit together? With the addition of under shelf lighting and removal of a pool table, this new effort is a fail at whatever message was intended. Impression? Sophomoric, not retro. This is a group of rich guys' hobby. Gone are the days when a person could stop by before the weekend Farmer's market and have a truly remarkable bloody mary created from individual components of vodka, tomato juice, black pepper, celery salt, Tabasco, Lea & Perrins worcester sauce, fresh lime juice and a stick of celery. When completed, it should have had a Prop 65 warning label attached as paint stripper - loved it. $5. Gone? and why? 1. None of the previous real bartenders were re-hired. 2. The place opens at 4 pm now rather than at daybreak. 3. Mr & Mrs. T mix doesn't cut it at $10. By the way, we ambled down a block to Basin 141 where there were 5X the active, vibrant crowd, bright music, a person right in front of us when we sat down welcoming us with food and drink menus (up to date) and asking us if we had been there before because he "wants to make our visit a good one". Our actual bartender stopped by for face time with us every 10 minutes just to see if "everything is good and can I do more for you". Huge difference and we spent about 90 minutes and 3x more $$ here than at Avignone's, got much better value for our dollar and could actually taste the booze in the exciting and different drinks. The comparison is complete. Good luck with your hobby. When you want it to be a real dive bar, you will have to get some professional help. Professional meaning someone who actually did it for a living. Right now, your reputation will be "Home of the Short Pours". No more Avignone's for us and that will be what we share with others. I will recognize one of the owners wrote a response, but after reading it, it still didn't say anything or address any of the items of unprofessional conduct observed. It was a diatribe seeking some recognition for his good deeds and living in the same zip code his whole life. Sad. Saw a response from one of the "owners" that they will have the NFL showing this year. The NFL was always on the tv at this bar when the other owner had it, Since the place now opens at 4 pm, Sunday, Monday and Thursday night does not mean you will have the NFL. 90% of the games are played during the daylights hours, in case you didn't know.

Yelp
The finest hosting procedure was done here! Starting from the welcoming staff, great atmosphere, and kind ownership. Great place for photoshoots with prior arrangements. Cheers.

Yelp
Avignone's!! My old stomping ground .. What a fun cool spot ~. Love the sexy vibe .. It's so great to see that you're back open for business after the unfortunate shut down to all small businesses ! I took a colleague here a week ago for some drinks before we went to dinner and he just loved it !! We listened to some fun music and even shot some pool ~. Great service and fantastic cocktails ~. Looking forward to my next visit ~ Cheers

Yelp
The bartender Chris was the nicest person! He made my day! The whole place is a nice place to get together with friends.

Yelp
Great place to chill out and have either a nice stiff drink or a cold beer. Had a very relaxing few drinks before catching a movie up the street. Drinks are affordable and people here are down to earth and laid back. Place wasn't crowded and I like that. They have a pool table and a music box, even board games if you fancy to play with your table.

Yelp
Dive bar heaven. Pool table. Cash only. Cheap decent drinks. Music. Not live music, just music. Come as you are. Bring cash. No mixology here, thank goodness. Have fun!

Megan P.

Yelp
Dark atmosphere and an awesome friendly bartender. Please don't install a giant window by the pool table. "Natural Light" is the wrong route I liked it for being a dark dive/dive-ish bar :) I liked the music that was playing too

Armen A.

Yelp
Great service, awesome bartenders they're all super friendly, very nice ambience inside. I love this place, been coming for years, the back patio is very nice and newly built, love the seating in the front on montrose Ave, great location, great bar, always a good time.

Yelp
This place is the beginning and the end. Everything I ever wanted in a bar. They have an Alyssa! Awesome! A Dean! Dope! And a Melissa! Magnificent! What a welcoming environment. I can't imagine a place that resembles the shores of Zion more distinctly. Special thanks to Devaughn and Christina

Yelp
Avignon's is a great place to let you hair down. All the patrons have a positive attitude. All just want to have a good time listen to great music. This place is a great mix of an old school bar with a modern twist. I'll be coming back soon

Yelp
First time at Avignone's. My family and I were celebrating my sisters birthday which fell on thanksgiving.. We came to this establishment since she recently moved into the neighborhood. As soon as we walked into the door the bartender "Alyssa" red curly beautiful hair did not like our presence. She was continually rude to my family even though they tipped her well. My boyfriend and I went to get last call drinks, literally a cocktail and a apple pie shot, all of $15 tab mind you Alyssa was not being kind at all. We stepped away from the bar for all of one minute while I was going to my purse to get a couple of dollars to tip her. Without any warning or provocation she yelled at the top of her lungs something along the lines of "if you are out on thanksgiving night and you don't tip" but loud so loud that everyone at the bar stopped in their tracks. I have never felt so embarrassed for someone. She was trying to humiliate us for what? $2.25 which would have been 15% of her tip which I was getting. Getting that out of control for $2.25 was out of this world. But I get it times are hard right now. Either way nothing warrants her behavior. There was a regular who kept coming over to our group apologizing and reassuring us that this establishment is great and kept asking us how He could make it better, we thanked him but reiterated the fact that this woman did not like the color of our skin. We are Hispanic. Honestly I would come here again. But if I saw her I would leave. Just because she was so rude and disrespectful for frankly no reason. I hope she gets the help she needs cause frankly she does not like her job. But the bar was beautiful and we even dove in as the floor instructed lol!

Yelp
Love this bar and the people working here, especially the management . However after coming here multiple times and using Apple Pay (which they have the modules for) they now refuse on a Sat Night to accept the Apple Pay because the lady bartenders don't know how to use it and consider it a burden. Money& loyal customers are key to any business and that sadly doesn't seem important to them. I specifically come here after a long day and don't bring any C.C because of this easy Apple Pay and now I will sadly reconsider next time. Disappointed honestly

Yelp
Miss AVIGNONE'S, the staff, owners & regulars! Stay safe and hope to see you soon! Timothy P. P.S. How about opening up like during Prohibition???

Yelp
Love it!! Divey but classy! I was curious and now I know that it is karaoke Tuesday!!! Yaaaas! I love dean behind the bar!
google avatar

April Ray M.

Yelp
5 reasons for 5 stars: 1. If you love Martinis, they have THE BEST olives. Not your average pimento stuffed. 2. Tuesday night Karaoke is a blast! 3. The pool table and the cues are perfect according to an avid player I know. Only one table which is nice because it's not bombarded by pros and their tournaments. 4. Tacos!?!? Friday nights only. The best street tacos ever! 5. The bathrooms are clean. Actually the whole place is well kept and not scary anymore. It was really in bad shape before. Lol.

Yelp
This place is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! Talk about a phoenix rising from the ashes!!! The old Avignone's was the epitome of a 'dive bar'...dark, smelly, and not much ever going on. The NEW Avignone's is like a 'quintessential dive bar meets upscale metropolitan lounge'!!! Everything from the music, to the crowd, to the fun seasonal events...INCREDIBLE! The bar staff are all on top of their game, the drinks are perfect, and you can even control the music of the bar via an app on your phone! if you're looking for something new, and want to ditch that 'city' feeling, go to Avignone's and let loose! You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
The Dearest's brother loves this place but I don't really see the charm. Visiting on Octoberfest weekend, we were invited in by free beer samples at the door? Planning to come in anyways, I got a Jack and Coke for close to $10 in a small plastic cup. Small bar, no food, typical Montrose parking. Despite the restaurant's fun history, no value here.
