Well, that didn't last long.... And in a good way (as you can see 🙈)! I got the chicken burrito with the guacamole. The flavors were all there as any fantastic Mexican dish would have. The salsa is what really got me though!!! Just the right amount of heat and freshness with chips that were crisp and begging to be dipped, then torn apart. Overall the restaurant is great and recommend you give it a try when you are in Costa Mesa, it at one of their other locations in the area.

Google
Such a great spot! The food was delicious, the place was clean and inviting. The staff is super friendly. The food is handmade and beautiful. Jaida was super sweet by recommending some of her favorite dishes, which we ordered and loved. Oh and the fried ice cream is worth saving some room!

This brand, regardless of location delivers! That said, truly enjoyed trying out the Costa Mesa location. It’s beautiful inside and thoroughly enjoyed their outside patio dining. The service was outstanding. Jaine was delightful, as was the bus boy and manager. Had the two item combo and left stuffed. For sure, I’ll be back and of course brought their epic salsa home!

Hector our server was very nice, it was busy and he was still able to keep our drinks full and made time to laugh with us. If your looking for the family owned feeling, this is it. Food was so good. :)

Fresh & Flavorful – A Must-Try Baja Bowl at Avila’s El Ranchito - Costa Mesa I had an amazing dining experience at Avila’s El Ranchito in Costa Mesa! This family-owned gem truly delivers when it comes to authentic Mexican flavors, fresh ingredients, and warm hospitality. I ordered the Baja Bowl, and it was absolutely delicious. The ingredients were fresh, vibrant, and perfectly balanced. The grilled beef was tender and flavorful, the rice and black beans complemented it beautifully, and the avocado added the perfect creamy touch. The portion size was generous, making it both a satisfying and healthy choice. Beyond the food, the service was excellent—attentive, friendly, and efficient. The atmosphere was welcoming, with a cozy and traditional Mexican feel that made the experience even more enjoyable. If you’re in Costa Mesa and looking for a great spot for authentic Mexican food, Avila’s El Ranchito is a must-visit. Whether you're craving a hearty Baja Bowl or their signature enchiladas and tacos, you won’t be disappointed!

Google
This restaurant did not disappoint. Our waiter Rocky was phenomenal and the rest of the wait staff were extremely nice and attentive. The food was divine and the portions were extremely generous. I only wish we were not flying out the next day or we would have eaten here a couple times while on vacation. We will definitely be back!!!!!

Google
I've been told I'm a tough critic as it's HARD to get a 5 star review from me. But... everything we ate was delicious! *Chef's Kiss* My boyfriend and I loved the authentic and fresh chips and salsa (free), wonderfully ripe and chunky guacamole, and the AMAZING chicken fajitas with perfectly seasoned meat, caramelized veggies, rice & beans, and piping hot, handmade tortillas. It was $36 for everything mentioned, plus 2 waters. This gave us a bit of sticker shock, but they're worth it! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Food was excellent and so was service! Rocky made sure we were taken care of. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This place has very solid food for the price. And our server Rocky was amazing. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Had a great experience today Rocky was fantastic very accommodating and very pendant on what we needed (food, drink, cleanup) had a person in my group practicing their Spanish with Rocky i appreciate his patience, understanding and humor with it all. Food was great I had an Aztec burrito today and their strawberry lemonade definitely recommend them both.

Yelp
First time at Avila's El Ranchito in Costa Mesa and it won't be the last! From the host to our waiter Rocky to the manager Salvador, everyone treated us like family. They even surprised us with a fried ice cream to celebrate our first visit! The chips and salsa were so good, the fresh guacamole was perfect, and my carne asada topped with camarones al mojo ajo had so much flavor (the shrimp sauce over the steak was amazing). Handmade corn tortillas and probably the best watermelon margarita I've ever had. Above everything, the service was outstanding. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
The location is a bit off the beaten path but the hospitality is amazing. The food was very good, reminiscent of traditional Southern California Mexican cuisine. For example:the old school desert of Baked Alaskan (fried vanilla ice cream) was the best I've had. It's a great place to take a few old friends. It's absolutely a step up from the rest of the sister restaurants.

Yelp
This is a great go to Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa are exactly what I like at a Mexican restaurant. The salsa had onions and cilantro but not huge tomato chunks with a little kick to it. This is a great place for a group and as a date we had a party of 9 and they were very accommodating and kind with great service!

Yelp
This spot really nails the vibe of a perfect neighborhood Mexican restaurant. They have complimentary chips and salsa and they kept them coming throughout the meal, which everyone at the table appreciated. We came in about an hour before closing with a big group, and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. They found space for us right away and never made us feel rushed. I ordered their famous soup--it was good, but I'll probably try something else next time. It just didn't quite pop for me flavor-wise, though it wasn't bad by any means. I'll likely order one of their combination plates next time. I love when a place offers those. Overall, I'd definitely come back and would recommend this place if you're looking for a casual, sit-down Mexican spot with solid food, great service, and a neighborhood feel.

Yelp
Our server, Mercedes, was wonderful. She was extremely sweet, attentive, and had the perfect recommendations. Food and drinks were exceptional. Both the blood orange margarine and the passion fruit margarita were the perfect mix of sweet and strong. The ambiance is true to Mexican culture and clean. We'll be coming back!

Yelp
First time here. Just arrived from Utah at LAX. Heading yo Costa Mesa we ran into Avila's El Ranchito . The family owned feel and very friendly service from Rocky was welcoming. Ambiance on the Patio was nice. Had Albóndigas and Husband had Shrimp Cocktail.

Yelp
Went to go eat here with my friend two days ago. I ordered fajitas with a piña colada. The food and service were really delicious. Our server Maldonado was really nice & the atmosphere was great. The guacamole was sooo good also

Yelp
When the hubby is craving enchiladas we go to a tried and true Mexican restaurant. Dishes are flavorful and it's always a vibe in here. Nothing more comforting than a cup of albondigas and homemade tortilla. Also ordered the Pepe's Special (Asada Encebollada) with chile negro. So good The chamaquita ordered the kids' hamburger meal because she hasn't developed her Latina tongue yet .

Yelp
This is my friend's favorite Mexican restaurant and we were celebrating the holidays and a birthday. My friend tells me that this chain of restaurants is family owned and all the recipes are proprietary to the family. Enchiladas are my benchmark for Mexican restaurants and what I order to decide on if a place is worth coming back. Hand made tortillas and very fresh tasting green tomatillo sauce were the stand out for this dish. The chicken was moist, but there was a bone in it that I can overlook as the bone was large and I spotted it quickly. Great ambiance and my friend and I sat and talked for hours during their off peak time (2:30-5:00 on a Sunday). They still got a very consistent stream of customers even at these off peak hours. I would absolutely come back and try more items. The waiter was so kind to bring out a birthday sundae for my friend. Small acts like these make a huge impact. Wonderful service. Parking is easy in their private lot, but we did come off peak,

Yelp
In my opinion it is over rated. Hospitality and ambiance ok. I ordered steak fajitas, very little small pieces of meat with grilled onions that were super salty. Margaritas almost $12. Each with almost no alcohol in it. Waitress begging us to write a review! I've been to so many Mexican restaurants and they were all much better than this and they didn't cheat on their alcoholic drinks.

Yelp
Great attentive service and the food was good. Our waitress provide her expertise on the tamales. In fact, she said if the tamale is not to my liking she would not charge for it. Let's just say the pollo tamale was delicious.

Yelp
The atmosphere was so fun and felt very tropical. It was way easier to park here than the other locations. The food was phenomenal as always- the salad, tostada, and margarita made my night! Our servers and host were so friendly. Highly recommend this spot and excited to go back!

Yelp
When my husband visits a friend who lives in the area, they often go to Avila's El Ranchito, which was recommended to us. Upon arrival, the restaurant was very busy and chaotic. We visited on a Thursday around 7 p.m., during the time when several graduation parties were taking place. The hosts advised us that the wait would be approximately 15 minutes. Interestingly, another couple that arrived after us was seated before my children and me, which was somewhat disappointing. Once seated, I had to get my own menu, as only two had been provided initially. When ordering drinks, I asked for lemons with my water but did not receive them, despite following up. My children shared the carne asada plate, and I ordered the fish tacos. The salsa was delicious and chunky. The carne asada was large enough for both of them to share; the meat was tender and thin. The rice was flavorful, while the refried beans were okay but had a noticeable taste of lard. The fish tacos were mediocre, with a strong fish flavor not typical of white fish, but complemented by a nice slaw. The black beans lacked flavor, so I chose not to eat them. I had forgotten that I ordered their house soup; it was acceptable, although it lacked any particularly bold flavors. I needed to add lime to give it a bit of extra zest. Overall, I was somewhat disappointed with the experience, and given there are many other Mexican restaurant options, I likely would not return.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in California! Even the chips and salsa are beyond outstanding! Thick chips that do not break when you scoop into a bowl of salsa! Flavorful chunky salsa that dances on your taste buds! Outstanding service from JAIDE that leaves you wanting for nothing! Perfect Mexican ambience Inside the dining room with comfortable booths and chairs. This Mexican restaurant is a hidden gem on Placentia Avenue in Costa Mesa, California. Highly recommended!

Yelp
A group a friends got together for Saturday dinner. Super busy but the wait was minimal. Sat outside with nice fire to keep warm. Inside the restaurant the place was full. The diners seemed to be having a great time. Definitely a local hangout. We started out with a liter of Cadillac margaritas. Strong, flavorful and hit the spot. Nachos were a delicious appetizer. My gf had the Vegi Aztecta burrito and I had the Pepe's Special. Her burrito was loaded & smelled delicious. A quick thumbs up & I knew she was happy. The Pepe's special is a rib eye steak. Cooked to perfection medium rare with grilled onions! The salsa Chile Negro was a smooth & Smokey combination. Get extra because it's so delicious. Fresh beans & Rice complimented the dish. The topper is that it comes with freshly made corn tortillas. Fantastic! Dispite being crowded our waiter keep tabs on us & was on the spot. So friendly. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
This location is the BEST amongst all the Avila's El Ranchito. We had really good service by Rocky tonight. He was attentive and quick to bring what we need despite being super busy. When I mentioned to him my fajitas had mostly veggies & not much chicken, he quickly went into the kitchen and brought out a side of chicken!! 10-star for Rocky and his services. Food always delicious here. Hubby had the carnitas plate and he loved it. All lean meat.

Yelp
Was so happy to find out Avila's Costa Mesa was the same one that I used to frequent in Huntington Park. Food was delicious, Blood Orange margarita tasty, and Rocky our waiter was so nice, friendly, and accommodating. Will definitely be dining here again. And plenty of parking which is always a bonus!

Yelp
The last time I ate in that restaurant was about 2 years ago! Man, they serve the best Mexican food and the prices are reasonable! They also serve the best Cadillac margaritas as well! I was quite impressed! And this location is in a perfect spot! I began eating there during my lunch break around 1983, 1984! And ever since, I have eaten there! I have not grown tired of the place and though, I am now currently living in Texas, I will be going there in the next 3 weeks from now! I like the staff there! So friendly and welcoming! Not only that, but they're accommodating! Anyway, will be there in 3 weeks!

Yelp
Our family frequents the El Ranchito on Placentia in Costa Mesa at least twice a week. We feel strongly that they have some of the most authentic Mexican food around the area. We especially enjoy the chicken tortilla soup and salad combo. The service from all staff is excellent and a special shout out to Jaide, our favorite server. Fantastic job you all! Palombo Family, Rick, Christy, Kim, Declan, and Finnley.

Yelp
Came here with my family to celebrate my brother's graduation! Service was absolutely amazing and quick, the staff and the ambiance made us feel so welcomed. I want to recognize our server Rocky, he was so kind and welcoming. Not to mention that the decore of the restaurant felt super homey. As an early father's day gift, the staff had given my dad a glass cup and to celebrate my brother's graduation, complimentary fried ice cream. I couldn't even get pictures of the food we ordered because it was so good! DEFINITELY COMING AGAIN.

Yelp
Went to the Costa Mesa location last night and it was packed for Mothers Day Mexicana but our group of 4 was seated almost immediately. Started with Modela Negras, then straight to the tasties...Shrimp plate and taco plate for the wives, Carnitas and Ribeye plates for the men with a Flan to finish it all off. Everything was cooked to perfection, came out in a reasonable time and well attended by Robert who was running his ass off like everyone else. This place ROCKS!
google avatar

Trinity K.

Yelp
Anyone who says this place is overrated clearly doesn't know good Mexican food and is expecting cheap drinks in Orange County (doesn't exist). Their food is wonderful, service staff is wonderful, and price is moderate. Especially for how great the family takes care of their business. Just be aware of parking, it gets super congested right on the street. I'd stick to uber if you can!
google avatar

Gloria C.

Yelp
Super friendly staff and great service! The restaurant ambiance feels like a visiting family! The food is authentic and delicious and they drinks are on point. Always my "go to for excellent Mexican Food and consistent great service.

Yelp
This was our first time at Avila's El Ranchito, and we had a great experience! I was pleasantly surprised by the ample parking, which made arriving stress-free. We were warmly greeted by Salvador at the host stand--he welcomed us with a big smile and made us feel right at home, which really set the tone for the evening. We were thinking of checking out the bar first, and Salvador kindly let us know we could come right back if we decided we wanted a table instead--such a nice touch! We found seats easily and the vibe was relaxing. The margaritas were incredible--fresh, fruity, and perfectly made. We also loved the chips and salsa, which were super flavorful. Can't wait to come back for their Tuesday specials and, of course, more margaritas!

Yelp
Authentic Southern California Mexican food. Fun atmosphere, great service, delicious food! The guava marg is delish as is the blood orange marg! This is my New Mexican go to!

Yelp
My friend introduced me to this restaurant and I was so pleasantly impressed by the quality of the food. The combination plates definitely hold the most value for around $20. I ordered the enchilada with a tamale and it came with rice and beans. My friends plate looked especially appetizing with the taquitos and tamales.

Yelp
Decided to drop by after going to an outdoor market with my partner, mom and 2 dogs The climate and scenery was nice and best of all dog friendly ! Quick to get seated in the patio area, chips and salsa was good too. Good was quick and our server Rocky was super attentive! Would recommend and will go again

Yelp
If you're debating coming here, let me be your voice of reason. I stopped by on a whim at 3pm on a Saturday and was shocked to see a packed dining room. My curiosity led me stay and I'm so glad I did. The food here is really good if you're living for a Mexican-American restaurant; the Pepe's Special was fantastic! Ribeye was tender, and the onion was perfectly grilled on the hot plate. I briefly wondered why this location of Avila's was rated so well compared to other locations; then, I met Rocky and my questions were answered. Rocky and his team provided us with some of the best customer service I've had in a long time while also balancing a private party out in the back. Super impressive to watch him balance greeting customers and chatting while serving a busy dining room and touch base with the private party. Thank you Rocky for showing us Avila's first timers a great time!

Shivani P.

Yelp
I don't usually leave reviews, but I had to for this place! Enchiladas are my all-time favorite food, and as a vegetarian, it's often tough to find spots that can really accommodate my preferences. Avila's went above and beyond--they made the BEST enchiladas I've ever had. The service was just as incredible. Salvador gave us such a warm welcome, and our hostess was so sweet and friendly. The restaurant itself is adorable inside with a cozy, welcoming ambiance. This is officially my new favorite restaurant. I can't wait to bring my family here!

Bill V.

Yelp
We have been going here for years. The food is good , the service is solid, but about six months ago they changed the chips and the new chips have no flavor. I mentioned it to who I think was the manager and he acknowledged the change but that was a couple months ago and they haven't fixed it. No reason to buy guacamole now. It sucks because their salsa is good. I know others have complained too. There are too many other restaurants options out there , I am surprised it hasn't been addressed.

Yelp
Came here after a round of golf with some buddies. Was really hungry and craving some Mexican food - this place went above and beyond my cravings... Some of the best fajitas I've ever had, amazing service, very generous portions, and everything came out super quickly. Everything feels very authentic and made with love. Rocky and Salvador provided an incredible experience as first time customers. I will definitely be back soon. Try the fried ice cream if you manage to have space after your meal!

Yelp
Warm, friendly staff, great food, tremendous service, and a very family vibe. Wonderful experience in a comforting and casual Mexican setting. My family loved it here and we will definitely be back.

Yelp
First time eating at this place. The Avila soup was outstanding. I ordered enchiladas combo (chicken suiza & shredded beef ranchera) which were very good. The salsa was absolutely delicious! The service was fast & attentive. Cozy, dimly lit atmosphere.

Yelp
Food and drinks are excellent, but the service is superb! Very friendly staff that made us feel at home.

Yelp
This was an absolute delight to have lunch at this restaurant. When I walked inthe place on Monday, April 28,2025, it felt authentically Mexican. They gave me and my companion the warmest getting The service was exceptional and the food was superbly prepared. The ambiance was cozy and the chips and salads flowed like a river. My Server, Rocky, was the best I've experienced in years. He was kind, accommodating, thorough and especially generous. I would recommend this place at the highest of recommendations!

Karen S.

Yelp
My family and I went yesterday to celebrate our sons college graduation. We were greeted by a very nice gentleman in the parking lot welcoming us inside. We were quickly seated, and Rocky, Our server introduced himself. Our server was very professional, courteous, and thoughtful. He provided us with three complementary fried ice cream desserts to celebrate the graduation and they gave my husband an early Father's day glass cup as a gift. The food was authentic and delicious, which was enhanced by their hospitality. The decor is traditional to the culture, vibrant and colorful. We were made to feel like family, thank you Avila's El Ranchito. We will see you soon.

Yelp
Rocky was a greater server good food and service I recommend the beef enchiladas! Very chill place for dinner with good music

Hong N.

Yelp
Guacamole was $14. When they ask if you want guacamole, keep that in mind The one item combo (taco) was good. Nice shredded beef, crispy shell, a lot of rice and beans. But not that much flavor. The fajitas were also sizzling hot, good flavor, and the corn tortillas were nice and fresh. Tostada, however, was ok. Beans soaked into it too much and not a lot of meat. Do not get the fried ice cream. The coating tastes bad, since it tastes like they fried it and put it in the freezer. Service was nice though although a little rushed and the decor and lighting was also nice.

Yelp
Had a great first visit! The food, atmosphere, and service were all excellent. I tried the enchilada, and it was absolutely delicious. Looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu!

Yelp
Let me just start with Jaide the waitress that helped us...... one of the best I've come across!!! She was very helpful with our selection today, wifey got the machaca plate with potatoes n beans.... she enjoyed it very much. With Jaide's recommendation, I ordered a 50/50 mix of posole n menudo.....I would never have thought that combo or if other places would do that. But let me tell you, I'll be asking for that combo anywhere they have those 2 items n I'm in the mood for it. Their regular salsa was spicier than the spicy one which i always ask for at any Mexican places i go to..... the salsas are pretty solid, muy bueno!!! I also ordered a side of rice, it was da bomb baby!!!! I loved it n I can't wait to have it with the leftover combo soup i brought home!!! Thank you Jaide for the recommendation n the very warm n welcoming personality.... you made us feel like family!!! We will definitely come only to this location from now on when I want Avila's!!!!
