Awash Ethiopian Restaurant

5/5 Ethiopian food!!! I’ve now been here three times in the last two years, and have traveled from all over Manhattan to come eat at this Awash! I love their Kitfo and vegetarian sampler platter. I’ll have to keep coming back so I can try everything on the menu! This isn’t fast food and it’s meant to be enjoyed slowly, so don’t eat here if you’re in a hurry.

Great but BEWARE! Google says open at two P.M. but really they are not open until closer to 2:45-3pm! And then, if you arrive right, when they have opened, you will be smelling cleaning chemicals for 45 minutes. It gave me a headache. No such problems in the evening. The gluten-free injera is really good. I only eat a vegetarian meal, I usually get the vegan sampler, but the 7 different options are quality. The service is good, the staff is very nice, and this is one of my favorite places to go for Ethiopian food in the city. 🇪🇹

We’ve been going to both locations for decades and last night, for the first time, we went for Valentine’s Day and it was perfect! They did a little decorating (cute, they made an effort) and the special kitfo with vegan sampler was the best. The service was especially sweet and she was really working so hard and it was packed — the grace under pressure was worthy of recognition. Thank you, Awash!

04/23/25 Started with the tella (a honey wine, coffee and jalapeño cocktail) and Timatim Fitfit for an appetizer. We had the awash chicken and the Yatakilt Alicha. Everything was incredible and fresh and flavorful. Prices were reasonable and service was good. My first time having Ethiopian food, it couldn’t have been better.

Awesome food! I love that you get to eat with your hands! There may be a cultural disconnect with the way that they wait on you but they are very respectful and nice with smiles! Get the platter with meats and veggies! So good!

I ordered on uber eats and it came faster than expected. Super delicious, the injera is fresh and the lamb with collard greens very nice. The portion is huge! My favorite however was the lentil dish - I think it was misir wat. Will def order again.

Loved loved this place. It was my first time getting Ethiopian food and I thought it was amazing. Got the veggie platter and the spices/seasoning was soo good. The combo together was delicious- really loved the beets complementing the chickpea mix. Everything was wrapped in a type of bread/wrap which has a kind of grainy texture but is very complementary. Got this for take out and 100% would get again. Large portion as we had it for 2 meals.

Awash was recommended by my Ethiopian friend as the best place to try their food. The welcome was warm and the service was friendly. We were five and initially wanted to order samplers with other items from the menu but the food sharing fee is a very unusual and alogical rule and we had to change our mind. Finally, we ordered individually different food from the menu. I tried beef and lentil Sambusa and beef Siga Tibs. The food was delicious, I really enjoyed Sambusa. Overall, we enjoyed the evening but considering numerous factors we decided that it was worth trying but doubt to return shortly.

Ethiopian cuisine is one of the most unique, and Awash is a great option for hearty dishes on delicious injera. We had the Awash special, which included kitfo and tibs, both staples of any Ethiopian meal. Between the injera, each meat dish, and the accompanying veggies (lentils, greens, beets), the meal was packed full of flavor. At a fixed $50 for two, it was a great deal for a filling dinner. They also have unique drinks, including honey wine and a few different cocktails, although we didn't try any this time around. The space leaves a little something to be desired, it's a bit dated in terms of furniture and decor. Avoid the bathroom, it doesn't have any ventilation. But for an excellent Ethiopian meal at a good price, Awash in Morningside is well worth a visit!

Hadn't had Ethiopian food in a minute and decided to check out this location. It's in a beautiful part of the UWS and within walking distance of Central Park. I ordered a combination platter with Doro Wat and 4 different vegetables. The food came out about 15 minutes later. Everything was delicious, would have preferred the chicken a bit spicier. The chicken leg was not fully cooked and meat next to bone had some red blood still. Injera was fluffy and sour but arrived cold. Overall good experience beautiful interior. Would definitely try their other locations in the future.

I would give Awash a solid 3.5-4 stars. I am leaning more on the 3 stars now because we are still currently trying to deal with the weird divide of the check. But lemme back track: I made a reservation for 6 people. Me and a friend were the first ones there, and the only ones there when it opened. During the four hours that we were at Awash, maybe only four parties entered the restaurant. Being that this was a holiday weekend, the service from transit is, of course, horrendous. Regardless, the staff was lovely and accommodating to us in the beginning as the rest of us wandered in. We didn't order until may be about an hour or so into opening and I do appreciate the staff for being patient with us. One thing that I do want to bring attention to is that there were some concerns we collectively started to notice as we observe the restaurant. For one, while the decorations for the restaurant were absolutely beautiful, there were two lamps, one in particular that was in the center of the ceiling, that had a huge swarm of flies gathering around underneath it. These flies occasionally would wander off into different areas... they didn't really bother us in particular, but I would want to know why there was a huge collection of them underneath one lamp. One of the waitresses even swatted away at them. So this was an apparent problem that even the staff recognized. :/ When everyone arrived, we finally ordered. I got the Awash Chicken, which I absolutely loved! It was a lot of first times for my friends who have not yet had Ethiopian food, and they enjoyed sharing with each other, using the Injera bread! It was so good and filling! I also had a bit of their Ethiopian coffee in the beginning, which was quite good! As we wrapped up our meal and asked for the check, I feel that's when the experience kind of tanked. As I had mentioned, I had made a reservation for six people. The vast majority of us wanted to use our cards to pay for the meal, hoping that they would split it for us. The staff at the time told us they could only except three cards max for a transaction, and could not divide the order... Unless I am completely missing this detail on their website, I'm surprised that a restaurant, which allows the capacity of people in a party to have that kind of option. Well, understanding that Ethiopian food can be a very communal experience, maybe that is why there is such a small number on the card limit... but we were still confused by what we all had to pay. Another thing that I wasn't crazy about was on our specific receipt, they listed an already applied the gratitude or tip into the total, but when they ask you to sign, they also ask if you would like to give even more tip. But not in an obvious way, way more confusing and tricky. The reason why we all came here was to celebrate my 30th birthday. I am incredibly happy for the memories made here, and hope that the staff can take into consideration some of the concerns I had with this visit. Thank you so much!

I enjoyed it! It was a fun experience. We got the engudai tibs, sambusa, meat combo and vegetable combo. The service was a bit slow but we were a big group so understandable. They also gave us a free bottle of Malbec to enjoy with our food. Would recommend it if you've never tried Ethiopian food.

Absolutely delicious! I had the vegan sampler, which comes with key sir alicha (stewed carrots), atkilt alicha (potato, carrot, and cabbage), gomen (collard greens), misir wat (red lentils), ater kik alicha (split peas), and shiro wat (yellow lentils). It's served on top of injera with more injera on the side. All of the dishes had strikingly different flavors, ranging from warm spices to fresh and bright. The injera was tangy and bouncy in texture. The meal came out to $32 after tax and tip, which is pretty good for the enormous portion.

I went to this place twice with some friends. Best environment, tasty food, all around GREAT. The employees delivered exceptional service. The dishes deliver consistent pleasure. I expect to return eventually.

Very overrated. I was very excited because I heard a lot of good things about Awash. I was in the neighborhood so my friends and I decided to visit. It took ages for the waitress to seat us and even longer for her to come and take our order. We ordered the meat sampler since that's what most reviews seemed to have recommended. I have to say, the meat was dry and bland. I've had a few Ethiopian food places in the city, and even in upstate New York(surprisingly my favorite so far). I was disappointed that this one wasn't flavorful, besides a few of the meat being extra salty. The inerja also wasn't that sour, it felt like we were just munching but weren't enjoying it. Our water was also not getting refilled. When it came time for the bill, the waitress was no where in sight and after I put my card down it took another 15+ min for us to waive down the waitress for them to take our bill. We had leftovers so we decided to pack them to go, the waitress said okay but never came back to us, my friend decided to go up to just get containers herself but was sent back. We were ultimately pretty frustrated and already running late to our next appointment so we decided to leave, which was finally when the waitress brought the bill. If that wasn't bad enough, today I noticed they charged themselves extra tip. For such terrible service, I can't believe Awash had the audacity to give themselves a higher tip than allocated. Very dishonest business and will not be back for all the reasons mentioned above

So good! The interior feels special and thoughtful. Our server made good recommendations for spice level--"mild" was beautifully spicy. Rich flavor, not just heat. We shared a meat combo (lamb and beef) and a vegan combo. Honestly, everything was delicious. We were NYC tourists but would eat here again next time around.

I haven't had Ethiopian food in such a long time and this place blew me out of the water. I was a bit worried that I didn't have a reservation walking in but was able to get seated very quickly for a party of 4 which was great. We ordered the Shared Platters for 4 people which is a restaurant policy (the amount of people = amount of shared platters). This was definitely way too much food, a portion size of 2 can definitely feed like 3-4 people, but I was really glad I tried it and was able to have a lot of leftovers. - Meat Combo - The presentation of both these sets were crazy, I loved the giant plate with all these different dishes sitting on top of the injera. I feel like I don't really remember how a lot of these dishes tasted, but each one was incredibly delicious and went very well with the injera that was slightly "sour". I even liked the beets dish which was a massive surprise because I do not like beets. - Awash Special - Again, the presentation here wow-ed me. My favorite dish in both these plates was the Special Kitfo which was incredibly flavorful and had a hint of spice on it. I know it's supposed to be raw meat but I couldn't taste it at all. This is officially my new favorite Ethiopian dish. Overall, absolutely wonderful experience especially good for coming with friends and sharing food. Will definitely be back!

This Awash location was not a wash! (I'm probably having a little too much fun with the pun here..) Come here for affordable, authentic Ethiopian food within an artfully decorated interior. I introduced one of my friends to Ethiopian food here on a holiday Monday, and they were blown away by the variety and taste. Service can be a bit slow, but the taste is flavorful with generous portions. We thoroughly enjoyed the vegetarian sampler with loads of injera. It was a bit of a struggle to finish all of it.. but we made good progress. The beets were the refreshing highlight from our meal.

Terrible customer service. I ordered on GrubHub what I thought was a vegetarian meal. When it arrived it had meat and I don't eat meat. I called to get it fixed. Most restaurants will honor the mix up in orders, this should've been easy. I called and the lady who answered couldn't find my order. Then I had to repeat my address and my phone number multiple times to help her find it because she kept mixing up the orders. Then she told me there was nothing she could do until someone else came back to deal with it. Then she called back and told me it was my fault and they weren't going to replace the order. When I told her that was poor customer service, that even if it was my mistake, and it was, they should still work with me to fix the order. She refused and started yelling at me! So I hung up, contacted GrubHub, and got my money refunded. NOPE. Never again. Awash is A WASH!

There are reasons to go into Manhattan for dinner, there are reasons to stay away from Manhattan for dinner. This is a restaurant you steer clear away from Manhattan for dinner. It is not the prices, those were okay. It is not the accessibility by subway, that is first rate. It is the service I received, for the food that I received. The food is decent, but it looks too white tablecloth here. Too neat, too pretty, and it looked scared to be eaten. It felt like I was eating eggshells. If the meal does not feel right, it will not taste right. After all, we eat with our eyes as much as we eat with our brains. As for the service, it leaves more to be desired. My server was pretty rude, especially when I asked for suggestions. I like to ask the servers what they think is good. Is it too much to give an honest opinion? You would have thought I asked her to marry me without even asking her on another date. I felt insulted. To add more insult to injury, I felt like an alien bug that had to be squashed immediately. When another customer came in that she knew, she was all jolly and friendly. To me, I was watched the entire time like I was under surveillance. Yes, I cheated a little to use a fork to eat some of this, but here? I do not care. The heck with it here. When she did come back to check on me, she asked me if I wanted more injera. I said sure, thinking it would be free. But no, this is Manhattan. I noticed when I received my bill they charged me extra for more. That is a crying shame. No where else since I started trying this cuisine has done this, and no one treated me like a second class citizen as I was treated here. Since the food is decent, that is the only reason I am saving this review from being a one star review. One thing is for sure, I am sticking with the Brooklyn location.

I've had Ethiopian food in Philly and DC and loved it, so I was happy to see that NYC had its spots too. I was drawn to Awash in particular because its menu has customizable platters where you can choose the meats included and what size, since I think Ethiopian food is most fun when you get a giant platter to communally eat with your group. My friend and I came at peak dinnertime on Friday, but luckily there wasn't a wait and the servers seem to keep things moving. The inside of the restaurant is quite dim but nicely decorated with cool lamps, baskets, tablecloths, and a real candle at each table (watch out for it when you grab at your food!). We ordered an Awash combo for two that came with two generous servings of kitfo, special tibs (sauteed beef), lentils, collard greens, and beets. I found the tibs a bit tough and would get the other beef option next time, but the kitfo was DELICIOUS and I'm glad they gave such a large portion of it. Don't be afraid to try it because it's raw beef - it's kind of like the consistency of sushi spicy tuna, and amazingly buttery and seasoned. The platter is plenty of food for two and I'm happy to have leftovers for tomorrow. It takes a little while for the food to come out here, which was also the case at my favorite Ethiopian spot in Philly so maybe it's something to do with the cooking. We also had to flag down a server a couple times for water, which I needed since the food can get quite spicy. However, I wouldn't mind making this my regular Ethiopian spot - love the combos and the kitfo, and I need to return to try the lamb and honey wine!

Had a hankerin' and this food hankered! My dining companion and I had the vegetarian combo which was more than sufficient for two people. The twist is we had it with gluten-free injara -- not quite as tasty or fermented as the standard version, but still very good. Everything in the combo plate was delicious, and avoided being overly salted which is overly common these days. It may not be gourmet or present some artistic spin, but If you are looking for traditional style Ethiopian food this is the real deal.

Awash is one of the best Ethiopian places in the city. It's one of the first I had been to around here. This is a little different than Indian. It's not as spicy, but the food has flavor. There's lots of choices for vegans. Be prepared for how you're going to eat. It's one of those Ethiopian places where traditionally you eat with your hands. This saves them money on washing dishes, right? It has lots of vegetarian options. The food all comes on a platter. It's covered with a spongy injeera bread. This comes with a few rolls of the injeera. We had the Tofu Tibbets. It's about $15 and comes with some greens. This looked like it was spinach or something like that. As for the tibbets, they were good. These had a pretty spicy tomato sauce and the injeera helped soak it up, making it much easier to eat it. It was really good food. It gets busy even later at night. This is one of the few Ethiopian restaurants around here so if that's what you want try getting something from this.

First time trying Ethiopian food. We rode our bikes and arrived hungry. It was delicious! Eat with your hands because that's the way it's done! We asked our wonderful server Joy to pick whatever for us and this is what she chose. Great selection except for the chicken. It was dry and just meh. The rest of it was delicious! The beef was amazing and full of flavor, soft meat and just overall I wish I had a tub of it. The injera was wonderful. Soft yet had an underlying sour taste which I enjoyed with the food. We also got wine and beer! Small selection but good none the less. If we ever come back which we will, we will definitely come back to this lovely restaurant! Thanks Joy!

I've been to Awash twice, and both times I got the Awash Special. If you eat beef, you NEED to get this dish simply because of the Special Kifto. It is this spicy beef tartare that is soooo addicting. I'll go around the platter and try every dish, but I always come back to the Special Kifto. It is seriously so good. Between my two meals at Awash (several months apart) I have noticed some slight discrepancies. The first time, I had a delicious cabbage dish on the platter and I was a little disappointed when it wasn't included on the platter on my second trip to Awash. Also, I was under the impression that injera refills were free, as they were the first time I went to Awash- however, the second time I went, when we asked for extra injera, the waitress (rather rudely) said we would have to pay extra. Usually, injera has been complimentary at every other Ethiopian restaurant I've been to. One additional note - I think the staff could be a little more liberal with the napkins, as Ethiopian food can get a little messy on the hands. Overall, though, amazing food! I will definitely be back.

My friend and I have heard great things about Awash and finally got the chance to try it. The spot has a dimly lit dining room with a relaxing vibe. There's outdoor seating too if that's your preference. We both ordered the vegan combination platter, which comes with your choice of 5 different vegetarian options. The platter is served beautifully laid out on a piece of injera. Everything tasted absolutely amazing. You definitely have to try the Mesir Wot and the Shiro if you order a combo platter. I could eat them for the rest of my life and never be dissatisfied. Although it was a hike to get up to 106th street, I'll definitely be returning. Totally worth the travel.

I love Awash and I love the food. I've always been a huge fan of this restaurant since I first came here. I ordered a beef, chicken, and vegetable combo as per usual and my mom ordered something similar but with lamb in it. We both also ordered only gluten-free bread and those were the only two orders we made that night. Of course, the food was great but it came in 45 minutes late and they only did one small side of the gluten-free bread and they gave a huge side of the bread with gluten in it which made absolutely no sense. Why would we want any of the bread with gluten in it if no one ordered it as a side or in general? We ended up throwing out the bread and sharing the small side because no one could eat it. It was a waste of bread, which was also a disappointing thing. I love this restaurant, and I hope to come back in the future, but this experience wasn't good.

Food service and and low key ambiance for a shared meal with friends. Learning to do the protein-based plant wraps around meat and veggies was fun and tasty. Felt comfortable with Ethiopian friend guiding us...

I usually have the best dining experience in upper west side of New York City but this restaurant is just nasty and did me dirty. The food was good. It wasn't the best Ethiopian food I had, especially coming from Hawaii, they are legit way better Ethiopian foods on Oahu, but this is not the worst food. When it comes to their service, it was just nasty. I've noticed that they are kind to Caucasian customers. But they were very cold and unkind to me, and I was the only asian there that night. When I was ready to check out, they told me they don't accept discover cards. But I only brought that one credit card and didn't bring any cash. The waitress forced and escorted me to go to the grocery store next door to withdraw cash. And when she saw I was charged $1.99, she said: oh it's ok. Just $1.99. When we came back, I called their manager, and offered to have them cover the atm fee. But they did not cover it, and they demanded me for tips while lecturing me: if you use a discover card, you need to tell us in advance. I told her, no, I don't, because on the door, there's sigh saying they accept all cards.

One of my go-to Ethiopian spots in Manhattan. Portions are generous and the flavor is consistently phenomenal. That injera is simply to die for! As an entree, we love the meat sampler, which has a delicious mix of beef, lamb, and veggies. I'm also a huge fan of the avocado salad appetizer. I always leave this place with a full belly and leftovers.

First time ever having African food. I'd give this a good experience overall, would def come back, but nothing special.. I mean obviously it's not appealing but the food was flavorful and unique with spices, the inside of the restaurant was nice and comforting vibes but it's outdated, and the service was good but the lady over poured my drink lol. It was $22 + tip Food: 4/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 3/5

this was so good. it was my first time trying this delicacy and i'm so glad i did. it is certainly not my last time at Awash and i pray to go there again someday soon. the staff was very friendly and recommended great dishes. we all got the meat combo and it also came with veggies. the waiter even persuaded us to not get an appetizer because the meat combo would be a lot of portions and heavy. i loved it. the flavors were extraordinary and balanced. the injera was so perfect i need to find this recipe i can eat ethiopian food at Awash for the rest of my life 10/10 come here for the experience and also wash your hands before and after you eat cause it can get messy and they have utensils upon request (you noob) A1

Alright folks review 500!! This was one of my favorite Ethiopian restaurant in NY, but they have been off lately. Started out with the service when I last went. It was very subpar, and then when I went a few weeks ago they didn't have the gluten free injera and the guy didn't seem to care... So yes I went to Haile Bistro, and they accommodated my needs. I truly am saddened because this was my true go to, and they were definitely 5 star. I would order the veggie sampler that you can order by how many people you have in your party. You can get 5 courses per person and I believe the prices vary from $19 to $57. Don't forget the avacado salad as well! I would also get their honey wine which was delicious. Almost forgot they do also have desserts. I believe it was Rum cake and carrot cake. I have never tried them personally but I have been with folks that have and they enjoy it. Probably one of my shorter reviews but I am just hoping the service changes so I can update them to the 5 stars I know they are!

The food had zero flavor and did not taste good. We LOVE Ethiopian food and try it in every city we visit. This was so terrible, even after we tried to season it, that we had to throw our entire meals away.

Even though the kitchen was closed at 9, they still welcomed us with open arms. The veggie sampler was recommended instead of ordering two separate vegan friendly dishes and it was worth it :)

vegan options galore. best Ethiopian in the US. order the veggie sambusas and combo platter. delicious!!! they have great meat dishes too. the staff are delightful as is the ambiance.

Some of my best college food memories were of eating Ethiopian meals in DC with friends of all political stripes one summer. Liberal or conservative -- we all loved coming together over family style meals served over a huge round of injera, and eating with our fingers while debating topics as hot as our food. Ethiopian food is a bit harder to come by in NYC, but there are a few well-known bastions of the cuisine, including Awash, which seems to serve the real deal. They even offer gluten free, all-teff injera, which tastes far better than my homemade renditions made from the recipe on the side of my Bob's Red Mill bag of teff. It has a really unique flavor and texture that's unlike the softer, more springy wheat-based injera typically served in Ethiopian restaurants in the US. We recently tried the tibs wat and doro wat combo served with three vegetable dishes of your choosing. Between two of us, we were able to try all the vegetables dishes on offer. The tibs wat and doro wat packed some serious punch. Not everyone is going to like the dryish texture of the beef in the tibs wat, or the chicken in the doro wat, but in my experience, this seems to be how it's made everywhere. (It's very similar to Indonesian rendang.) Although we liked the stewed meat, to us the best part of the meal were the plant based dishes. Ater Kik Alicha (yellow split peas cooked in a mild stew and seasoned with onions and herbs) were a nice respite from the spicy heat of most other dishes. This dish was made with small chickpeas, clearly soaked and prepped in-house, and not from a can. They retained a substantial amount of texture. Misir Wat (split red lentil stew cooked in berbere) was excellent and the resemblance to certain Indian masoor dal dishes was uncanny. Again, lentils retained a good amount of texture. (These kinds of lentils are typically made a bit softer in Indian cuisine.) Shiro Wat (ground spiced chickpea and split pea stew, cooked with chopped tomatoes and onions) had a pretty similar flavor profile to the ater kik alicha, but was cooked to a slightly creamier consistency and was spicier. Atkilt Alicha (potatoes, carrots, and cabbages seasoned with herbs and spices in a mild stew) were tinged turmeric yellow. Enjoyable, not particularly exciting, but another nice option for cooling off your mouth in between bites of spicier things. Key Sir Alicha (beets and carrots cooked with onions and flavored with herbs and spices in a mild stew) were made with firm, sweet beets, probably prepped from fresh beets. (This is labor intensive, FYI.) Really a nice, light, low-key dish. Gomen (chopped collard greens sautéed with ginger, garlic, onions, and herbs) introduced some important green vegetable matter, but in all honestly, were a touch bland. I didn't get much of the ginger (or perhaps my mouth was too spiced out by this point to detect it). By itself, it needed more salt, but did act as a nice foil for the salty tibs and doro wats. We also tried the beef sambusas, which came three to an order. These are thick pastry rolls made out of phyllo (or phyllo-like pastry) and moderately filled with beef. Flavors and textures were reminiscent of Tunisian or Moroccan cigars / cigares, but far thicker, rolled chimichanga-sized. The food isn't particularly photogenic by delivery, so know that if you dine in at the restaurant, everything is presented beautifully, with neat little scoops of each dish placed on different parts of the injera. The soaked-through injera you get to eat at the end is fantastic. Someone on the delivery website we used called this food, "Gucci." I have to agree. All those labor-intensive preparations = very, very Gucci.

Ordered the meat combo with extra injera for $40 takeout to share for 3 people, and it was enough food and a good value. Everything was pretty good. The meat was a bit salty, and the red lentils were a bit firm, but otherwise it was all tasty. Wish we could've enjoyed the food in person.

Awash Ethiopian Restaurant offers free delivery & large portions. The packaging was fine except for a small leak. I tried the 19$ meat combination and 12$ Timatim Fit-fit. The fit-fit was overly spiced & oily. The rest of the food was ok - but it was better the last time I tried it. Since so many restaurants are struggling during the pandemic, I give extra credit to those able to remain open. Overall it was ok.

Excellent Ethiopian food with options for all types of food preferences. Their vegan sample was to die for. Even the meat eaters liked it better than theirs (the doro wat had no flavor comparatively)! So many incredible, full flavors and the injera just absorbed it all so well. Their cocktails were also very unique and had a nice twist to them. Servers were very kind and made great recs. 4/5 stars because the service is usually quite slow (although everyone is super kind and as long as you're not in a rush it's just more reason to enjoy!), and the bathrooms were not clean. All in all, this is some of the best Ethiopian food in the area.

Friendly staff and food is decent. However, they seem understaffed, especially on weekends, and consequently it is contributing to a poor service. The men's room was out of order and they simplly locked it without putting a sign that said so. Customers we're queueing in line assuming someone was inside. But the staff didn't care much and was walking by us until we reached out to ask if there was an issue.

We went to Awash for an early dinner on a Sunday night. At first, there weren't many other people there, but the restaurant started to fill up around 6:30. The environment of the restaurant was very nice and warm, and the waiters were very friendly. Although there was some music in the background, the overall ambiance was pretty quiet and good for conversation. We ordered a sampler platter for three people which included two dishes and 6 out of the 7 vegetarian samplers and two meat dishes (we chose awash chicken and yebeg alicha). There were a lot of options to choose from, but I would personally recommend getting a sampler to be able to try as many things as possible. One thing to know is that there is a $9 fee if you get a sampler for a smaller group of people than you are with. We were really satisfied with the food that we got. There was a large amount of variety, and they were all great. The food also came out relatively fast. Overall, I would definitely recommend trying out restaurant. I think it is a great option for good, casual Ethopian food in the area. The prices were reasonable as well. For a dinner for three, you are able to have a good portion for less than $20 (excluding tip). The waiters were also very friendly and patiently answered all of the questions we had. I will definitely recommend trying this place out. It's a great place to go for with a group, especially those who love to share! That being said, they also do have options for those who don't like to share as well.

Before moving to nyc I lived near a lot of good Ethiopian food in DC and was excited to have it again here. Overall pretty solid! The vegetables were delicious but I thought the chicken was just okay.

Let me just sing the praises of my favorite. FAVORITE restaurant in NYC. Awash is home. Awash is joy. Ate it twice last week. Now order again for this week. I think I will have to order every week. I was feeling depleted and immediately began to crave it's healing spices and ghee. This is like family cookout. Look at this deliciousness. They don't know me but I love them. Sambusa - delicious. I've had lentil and chicken. Both awesome though I like lentil more. Miser wat- perfectly flavorful and wonderful spice Aterkilt - delicious cabbage and carrot. I love that they don't cook the heck out of it so the veggies still have texture! This is the way to do it! Beg Alicha - I will marry this dish. So juicy. So well prepared that I smile while eating it. It's like the comfort of a warm embrace from a good friend. You can TASTE the care they put into their food here. I need to marry the cook, only way I can ensure happiness for life.

Our first visit here was awesome - food and service was exceptional! It was our first time having an Ethiopian meal and our server was very helpful when she was taking our orders. We were very impressed and so we told ourselves we're coming back for more. We came back again a few weeks later - on a Tuesday night around 6:45pm. We didn't have a reservation but saw that they had a few open tables. The lady said she couldn't take us as they were fully booked for dinner, but offered us the bar seats instead. When we got to the bar, I went to check their website and saw that I could make a reservation for 7pm, 7:15pm, 7:30pm, etc. I make the reservation and waited for a few minutes and showed the lady that I now have a reservation. We were seated right away as there were still about 5 empty tables. I heard the lady refuse to sit another couple after that. I was so turned off by that but of course, I didn't let it ruin my night. The food was still great - very flavorful and looks extremely appetizing on a shareable plate. But customer service on the second visit might make me not want to come back anymore.

This is a great spot for some delicious Ethiopian food! The best part is they do substitutions in their platters. We ordered vegetarian platters, the red lentil is a must try! We also ordered the lentil sambusa but the server didn't inform us and got us the vegetable sambusa as they were out of lentils! I have heard their lentil ones are delicious! The Ethiopian coffee and tea were good and went perfectly with the platter!

I haven't had a meal that slapped this hard in a while. My best friend frequents this place and decided to come here for a birthday dinner. They were extremely welcoming about hosting a group of 15 of us. Although the ordering process was complex because of how many of us there were, they still pulled it off with no error. I, and a few of the other guests, arrived here HUNGRY. From the first bite, I could tell this would be a very filling meal. All the meat and vegetable options were exploding with flavor. My favorite option would have to be the special tibs and Awash tibs though. I wasn't as big a fan of the lamb and chicken. Upon request, the waiter was also able to bring out a slice of carrot cake with a candle for the birthday girl, which was a very nice touch to the perfect evening. Not to mention the cake was actually amazing. Probably one of the best carrot cakes I'd ever tasted in my life. Might come back here just to get a slice of my own. By the time we left, I could barely walk out because of how stuffed I was. And to top it all off the price was extremely reasonable. It ended up amounting to about $23 per person (excluding the birthday girl of course). Probably one of the most successful birthday dinners I've been to in a while. Thank you Awash!
