On the Grid : Away Hostel

"Are you looking for a place to sleep? Check the Away Hostel. Opened in June 2016, this place is already well known by travelers and locals. The wilder ones that are on a budget would go for the beautiful dorms. Otherwise, you can pick the intimacy option. All rooms and dorms are spacious, comfy and designed on a unique way. You also can go there just for a coffee or enjoy a good lunch." - Ghislain Mirat

I had a great stay at here. The rooms are nice and I appreciated the privacy provided by the bed 'boxes,' the lockers in the rooms are handy (you can bring your own padlock), the bathrooms were large and I was totally satisfied with the cleanliness, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the breakfast buffet is perfect and plenty (the bread was delicious!), and there's luggage storage, which is paying but very handy. The working cafe was perfect for me to get what work I needed done during my stay. The vibe there is friendly and focused during the day. The WiFi in the rooms is touch-and-go, but it's strong in the cafe. The location is also ideal for exploring both the Presqu'île and Vieux Lyon!

Definitely one of the best hostels I've stayed at! Love the decor and vibe. Lots of communal space to relax if you feel like staying in. Great location in Lyon, for trendy shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Close to several metro. The staff were lovely and helpful and I think this friendly vibe encourages the guest to do the same. My 10-bed shared room was clean and spacious, as were the bathrooms. Not a lot to complain about really! The only negative for me was the airflow in the bedroom. You basically have to choose between windows open with airflow but LOTS of noise, or windows closed with disgustingly hot but quiet room. I had ear plugs so noise wasn't an issue for me but others in the room without them literally demanded to have the windows shut! Disappointing that some people aren't up with the play and don't bring ear plugs to a hostel!! Maybe a fan in the room or complimentary ear plugs could help solve the issue. Otherwise, many thanks!

Very nice hostel, I would stay again! The kitchen only had one burner but there was plenty of space for storage and easy to cool in. I loved the cafe area to hang out and read. It didn’t seem super social but still a nice hostel to stay in, clean and calm.

Glad i booked this hostel. I arrived at 4am and could easily get my bed (that's both a pro and a cons i acknowledge, sorry for the other person in the room, i hope you got back to sleep quickly enough). The room was noisy, but as i expected it i was prepared.

Very professional, clean, tidy, organised, efficient, showers and toilets immaculate and stay that way if everyone looks after them too. Storage lockers with keycode, very safe and secure. Friendly, professional staff. An excellent stay. I also booked Slo again as they have another one in Lyon. Both are EXCELLENT! 👌

Great location and modern common areas, easy to work or hang out with coffee. Bathrooms are good for a hostel. Only downside: it gets really hot without AC, and opening the windows means it can get noisy at night. Overall, a solid choice if you don’t mind the peak summer heat.

I love this hostel. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful and kind, the environment is clean and quite secure (also for travelers with bicycles). Public transportation is very accessible with different metro lines nearby, it’s close to both of the rivers and in a very cool part of town. Great place.

I think I just caught a bad time to stay. There were about 50 visiting high school students. And that creates a certain chaos. Worst of it was when they came home after their nights out (twice while I was here) and carry on the party until 3am (it was probably more just 20 of them talking and laughing but it echos to the top floor) making life difficult for light sleepers. This place has a ton of rules. They should "control" the noise after 10pm Comfy beds, decent breakfast (+9e) though the coffee tastes cheap. While I expect the swarm of adolescents has cleared out this morning (for an early return home I think) I have since moved to an alternate hostel The People FWIW The People is more expensive, does not have a communal kitchen, does not accommodate my bike storage as easily as Slo BUT it seems quieter, the 4X room is twice the size and has a private bathroom)
