The best experiences in Singapore's Katong neighbourhood - SilverKris

"A flagship, all-day restaurant on Joo Chiat Road serving contemporary comfort fare in a relaxed setting, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients and creative spins on classics. Recommended menu items include The Works, a generous take on the traditional full English breakfast; a Crab Meat Slaw featuring hand-cut slaw with crab and a drizzle of caramelised lemon; and the exclusive, gooey Dark Chocolate S’more for dessert. The restaurant also releases seasonal hampers, gift sets and festive desserts that make for popular presents." - SilverKris Magazine

Small selection of savory items. Some of them were tasty though all of them were ice cold. There doesn’t appear to be effort made to keep them warm so of eating food (meant to be warm) cold turns you off, this is not for you. One thing to note is that the “one-time per person chocolate fondue” isn’t exactly it. When you are shown your seat, you will be given a small number board/pass for it. However, for our group of 3, we were given only 2 passes for this chocolate fondue experience. The staff explained that it’s actually 2 person to 1 pass, which is puzzling. Hence between the 2 person, only 1 gets to have a hands-on experience on this chocolate fondue. Basically it’s just scrapping molten chocolate off a round block of chocolate. Again, if this is a highlight for all diners, be prepared that for every pair, only 1 gets to try. Service wise… orders were taken promptly. Tap water (room temper) was served. Used plates were not cleared promptly so we ended up having to stack them on the side. At the tail end of our dining, we went to get our final round, and when we returned, our table was completed cleared. That means that my cup of half-filled hot chocolate was cleared out (which was an $8 added item), and my pack of wet wipes thrown away). This was done even though we specifically said we are not leaving yet. Very disappointing… especially with my hot chocolate cleared out.

Celebrated our anniversary today, and we really enjoyed the food fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. The customer service was fantastic from the beginning til end kudos to Ms. Marie very attentive and superb customer service which made the experience even better. Absolutely worth the money.

Had the buffet brunch. The braised beef pie is amazing! the braised beef was to perfection. nice spread of savoury and sweets. the french onion eclair and tater tots were good. scrambled eggs were bit dry, could be better. the racalette was fun! you get to scrap the chocolate out of the wheel yourself.

We had such a good time at brunch today! The buffet spread was impressive — a well-balanced mix of savoury dishes and sweet treats, all beautifully presented. Kids under 10 enjoy half-price dining, which is a great plus for families. Each paying adult also gets to choose a main dish, and the chocolate raclette wheel was a fun highlight. They even offer 10% off their in-store chocolate goodies. Highly recommended for a relaxing weekend brunch! Many people came here for birthday celebration as well.

Google
Awfully Chocolate's Brunch Buffet is a sweet and savory indulgence that exceeded all expectations! The spread masterfully balances their signature dark chocolate treats with perfectly executed breakfast classics and generous savory mains. While the food is excellent, the truly exceptional element is the service. The staff are attentive, warm, and highly efficient—a credit to the establishment. They ensure a seamless, luxurious dining experience from start to finish, elevating an already delicious meal. A must-try weekend experience!

The food was really good!! This is my first time trying a chocolate brunch here in Singapore! So unique and love all the foods they serve. Thanks to Mike who assisted us, very welcoming and accomodating. Gizelle also help us with the raclette and really helpful too. Kyosha and Sheereen is so helpful on our table and help us took beautiful photos. Will definitely come back here bring with my fam! ❤️

Google
Went for the weekend brunch buffet, and service from staff is excellent, pleasant and swift. Was hoping for more chocolate-focused options, like sampling different bars of various chocolate flavours. It is a smaller variety of desserts than I had expected for the price. Just note, it is not self-serve. You tell the staff from behind a glass, and they will put your selections on a plate and give it to you. For those similarly sweet-toothed, my advice is to skip the savoury foods and the brunch "mains" and focus more on the sweets, esp with the chocolate raclette and chocolate tap. The chocolate raclette crepe is only "redeemable" 1 time per pax. It was fun to srape it myself. The chocolate tap dessert bar is blessedly free flow. I recommend going for the chocolate brownie and layered cake, and definitely get the chocolate tap on top of that. They had us pay at our table in the middle of our meal. That alone would be no issue as I was enjoying everything so far. The problem is the one who did this was a dark-skinned, young man with curly hair (may be Indian, but I don't know) who shoved the card reader in my friend's face without a word. We were here for a birthday, and I was the one paying. That ruined everything. But I'm not penalizing the rating for all the other staff just for one guy's actions. But I'm not coming again.

Google
Awfully Chocolate Café never disappoints! The moment you step in, the cozy and elegant atmosphere sets the perfect mood for indulging in rich, quality chocolate desserts. Their signature chocolate cake is heavenly, moist, smooth, and perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. The tarts and dark chocolate are also must-tries, each bursting with deep cocoa flavor that truly satisfies any chocolate lover. Beyond desserts, their food menu is surprisingly impressive too. The pasta and brunch dishes are well-prepared, fresh, and complement the desserts beautifully. Every plate looks as good as it tastes. The environment is comfortable and stylish, ideal for a relaxing afternoon tea, a casual date, or even a quiet place to unwind. Staff are friendly and attentive, making the experience even better. If you’re a fan of chocolate or just love good food in a pleasant setting, Awfully Chocolate Café is definitely worth visiting, vpure indulgence from start to finish!

Yelp
Ambiance is quite nice, service is fair and food is decent. Happened upon this cafe to enjoy a Saturday night dinner with family and a close friend. We decided upon the prix fix dinner which was reasonably priced but took a while to emerge from the kitchen. The appetizer menu consisted of a French onion soup and salads all of which were delicious and nicely done. The main dish that night was a choice of seabass with sautéed vegetables, roasted chicken and vegetables, steak and French fries or beef tenderloin with risotto. The main entrees came out slowly from the kitchen almost 30 minutes after the appetizers. Next time, I think I'll stick with brunch or lunch and pastries.

Yelp
We had the set menu which comes with soup, a meal, drink and then only one cake option. Apparently the last two are optional but it would just make sense if it's a set then we ordered the whole set. From the length of the soup to the main dish coming out, it took forever. We waited about 30 mins and then no waiter looks to see that we need a refill of water. Honestly you guys have very poor service and waiting time for food and menu should be clearer.

Yelp
I had seen Awfully Chocolate from across the street from our hotel during our outings while in Singapore. It intrigued me so I looked it up and I found that not only did they serve chocolate, they had a brunch menu. My husband and I were seated by the window so we could view the bustling of the locals and tourists outside. I perused the menu as to what we should try. I opted for a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, toasted croissant, and arugula salad. My husband asked for the beef pie behind the counter. I also ordered the chocolate affogato which was served in in a metal martini glass. Service was okay. The food was fine. I enjoyed a few bites of the beef pie and finished my breakfast. The chocolate ice cream in the affogato was chocolatey and rich. The café is quite nice and is located on the busy corner of East Coast Road and Joo Chiat Road in the Katong neighborhood.

Yelp
I have a confession to make, Awfully Chocolate's Butter Scotch Brownie ($7) is a guilty pleasure of mine. I usually pick one up on my way home from I12 Katong or one of the major malls in the area, as an evening snack. :D As for the shop itself, it's got a nice clean modern interior. Not surprisingly, a lot of expats in the area frequent the place for their morning coffee or meal. However, I personally feel it lacks the local charm that Katong establishments are so known for (probably because its a chain). Nevertheless, Awfully Chocolate delivers a solid assortment of primarily chocolate pastries including: Dark Chocolate truffles, Chocolate Tart, Chocolate Praline Cake, etc. This should not by any means be considered a top-of the Line pastry shop, but if you happen to have a sweet tooth and are around the Katong Area, this is a great place to stop by to satisfy your cravings.

Yelp
When you are out and about with friends and want to catch up on life...nothing sounds more enticing than some chocolate desserts and wine. Well...at least in my book, but I do enjoy some great bites, some tasty sips, and lively conversation. Awfully Chocolate has all of the markings of creating such an experience, yet falls flat on its execution that leave me wanting a lot more. Let's start with the obvious: the menu. It is pretty impressive and feature a wide-array of chocolate inspired items. The chocolate mille crepe was light and airy, yet brought the bold flavors of the bittersweet chocolate and cocoa just blended beautifully with the creme The flourless chocolate cake was nothing to sneer at, a little dense in texture, but that is to be expected. The service is where you go "really?" It was bad. There is no sugar coating this (semi-pun intended). The staff didn't really know their menu and wasn't even sure what they had left. When we reordered some wine, it was a painstaking experience to explain what we wanted to re-order and it took an epically long time to arrive. Towards the end of the evening, the crowds that were still filling the place were herded out about 30 minutes before the published closing time. We had to finish our glasses of wine that just arrived pretty quickly. Come here for the dessert. Not the experience.

Yelp
As her name suggests, Awfully Chocolate has so much chocolate its almost a hazard to have her in the neighbourhood. Fortunately as a vegan, most of the chocolatey goodness is off limits but even then it's hard to resist the pure dark chocolate options. You can get something as simple (relative) as a scoop of ice cream for $3.80 to something as extravagant as a $50 cake. Whatever your budget, any fan of ice cream will be blown away by the genuine quality of chocolate here. It's not just good, it makes you all warm and fuzzy just being there. If you don't have any money, you can just walk past and enjoy the smell. Seriously, it's like a gastronomical hug. There are plenty of food options just next door, so do save plenty of space for desert or better still, keep this for a midday treat so your experience isn't hindered by lunch of dinner :)

Yelp
Great place for desserts and coffee. Must try their white chocolate creme brûlée. Amazing. Chocolate layered cake was ok but nothing special. Overall great atmosphere, good coffee, great creme brûlée.

Yelp
This Awfully Chocolate branch is located on the corner of Joo Chiat Road and East Coast Road. It is part of a space shared by Awfully Chocolate and Mooshi Bake. I rather liked the open concept of the place and how it's not segregated according to each individual shop. Parking there is really difficult, so I suggest parking in the malls nearby instead. I really love chocolate, and have supported Awfully Chocolate since its early days when they only had 1 product - The Chocolate Cake. I'm happy they've done well for themselves, and wanted to try what their other cakes taste like. :) I really enjoyed their signature super stacked cake which costs $6.50 per 100 grams. I had it with their Hei Ice Cream, and it was served together, with the cake warm. It was really good, as the chocolate was rich and creamy, but it wasn't overdone so that I felt sick. The ice cream wasn't too sweet and had a great consistency, and it complemented the cake really well. However, I did find it a little too pricey for what they were offering. I also tried their cold poached chocolate with the Kahlua Cream topping. Apparently, they've come up with a a new technique to make this dessert, and upon trying it, I found it a little bit sweet, but the chocolate was rich and soft, with a creamy texture. It was more like a thick and dense mousse cake. It's quite hard to describe! Other desserts I've tried there were too sweet and not great. I still like the original cake best, and ordered one for my friend's farewell. It did not disappoint! :) Stick to their cakes I say!

Yelp
I think Awfully chocolate is a good place to go for desserts. They sell their signature chocolate cake, butterscotch fudge and their chocolate ice cream, amongst many other chocolate dessert variants. While their chocolate cake is not mind blowing, its good enough to keep you and your friends satisfied. Their ice cream is pretty good however. At their east coast outlet, it's a combination of a bakery, dessert shop and restaurant. If you're dining in, you can order from any or all of the three menus. Though I haven't gone there for a lunch or dinner seating, the menu does look promising enough to make me want to try it out.

Yelp
I don't know what is the secret cold-poach method used for this Cold poached chocolate $6.00 but it is simply a velvety semi-solidified chocolate ganache. It was my favourite out of the rest, because it was just pure chocolate goodness without any obstructions in the mouth. The saltiness of the Salted Butterscotch Blondie Brownie $6.90 did not strike out as much as I would have thought. But the delectable fudgy, chewy texture after microwaving makes it one of the earliest cake to be wiped off the plate. On the other hand, the bulky Hazelnut Crumble with a cookie base $6.90 is not something that you will like on the first bite, but the bittersweet taste gradually crawled in. What I like most is the top crumble layer, which was why I bought it initially. But apart from that, I would still pick the Butterscotch Blondie. The White Chocolate Creme Brûlée ($6.90) which was served in a ramekin dish, is now in a the form of tart like their Chocolate Tart. But ooh...this would be one of the sweetest dessert I would remember for life. So sweet that I would avoid at all cost the next time. The White Chocolate Butterscotch Block ($6.50) is not something new on the menu but I wanted to recall its taste. This is fairly good one when you have it with the dense brownies because the light fluffy texture of Swiss roll sponge and the sweet-salty butterscotch cream helps to balance the richness of the latter. But the white chocolate layer tasted more like buttercream instead of fresh cream which I would prefer. And surprisingly, after having ALL these except the Creme brûlée in one sitting, I was not hit with any chocolate concussion as my previous visit for Fullerton Chocolate Buffet. Hope that when I return there will be new items to try too!

Yelp
Service was awful. Waited ten mins before we could order and then waited more than 25mins for dessert to come. Which should not have taken long considering all they had to do was scoop the ice cream and serve the cake. We even had to prompt them for the food as they seem to have forgotten about it. Had heard good things about this place but will never come back again.

Yelp
If you are a chocolate lover you might enjoy here more than I did. We stopped by for dessert after dinner. I tried their millefeuille, which is not the usual kind i was expecting with puff pastry. it was a thin multilayered cake and cream. and felt a little bland. Drink wise, we wanted something refreshing, so none of us opted for chocolate based drinks (which could've been where we failed). They werent memorable at all. And wouldnt opt for them next time. Maybe next time I should try this place out again when we arent so full or tierd. And pick actual chocolate drinks :)

Yelp
I've patronised AC since its super early days and always raved about the hei ice cream. However, with the evils of expansion, the standard has understandably dipped. There used to be a time when the ice cream was of a generous portion, thick, and not overly sweet. These days, more often than not, the scoop depends on the strength of the server of the day, and comes with bits of ice inside. Which is what happened last night, really. Little crunchy bits of ice. Adds texture, yes, but not something I'd appreciate. Really, if it's the first time I was having hei, I'd be bowled over by its depth of flavor but then again, I know full well how much better it was in its heydays. In addition, service is exceedingly poor. The girl indicates for you to move inside if you're dining in. You squeeze in past the very narrow passageway where people are waiting for their takeaways. A sign says "Please wait to be seated" so you take a seat at the bar stools at the white tiled counter because there's no one there to usher customers. A couple of other people squeeze their way in and wave at the server inside. The server beckons them in. You look at the original girl questioningly, but she ignores you. Frustrated, you order takeaway and eat it there, sitting at the white tiled counter. And interestingly enough, there doesn't seem to be a difference anyway because no one tells you can or you can't, which doesn't make sense because then there's no real point in segregating an inside/outside area right?

Yelp
We got chocolate martini. My friend requested for a little stronger wow! These people charged 3x the price. I understand upping the additional price but come-on guys 3 times for making a drink stronger seriously not reasonable. Either you clarify before or be reasonable with customers.

Yelp
First of all, let me start with this review has nothing to do with the product, and entirely about the service experience we had there. I'm a huge fan of the products that awfully chocolate produces; their chocolate cakes are second to none; sadly, this location only sells whole cakes and not slices. However, even with that initial disappointment, I quickly got over it when I caught sight of the chocolate tart. I went in with my two kids and my friend who is as into chocolate as I was. The restaurant felt like a walk in chiller, we had to ask the staff to switch off the fan as it was really chilly (it was also a rainy Saturday afternoon). They very nicely obliged which I thought, was great, the menus also followed very quickly after. It was not very crowded at all, with probably 5 or 6 other tables occupied in total. We were waiting for someone to come get our orders as we were really looking forward to some great desserts, but to no avail. The male manager seems more interested in looking at his phone then working, the new female staff member was kind of lost looking. I understand that, because she is new, however, Mr Let's-see-what's-new-on-Facebook, draws a decidedly smaller amount of understanding. When my sweet friend went up to say that we are ready for our orders to be taken, he said that he was waiting for us to be ready. Again, a really odd proclamation since his back was facing us and there was no perceivable way that he could see us. Mr-IPhone came over asked what we would like and when I mentioned that we would like some ice water, he very abruptly ran off to get it before we could even get our orders in. It was a short while before we saw our desserts arrive, the new female staff was holding my friend's ice cream and for some strange reason decided to leave it in the counter and went off to do something else. We sat there looking at the ice cream also sitting there on the counter, no other staff member seems to be doing anything about it. So again, my poor long suffering friend had to go get the attention of mr instagram manager. He perked up from his phone again to serve us the ice cream in a wobbly metal martini glass. When the rest of the desserts finally made their way to our table, the manager thought it was a good idea to tell my three year old that she should drink a lot of water because the desserts are too sweet. Shouldn't he be trying to convince us that the food is great, instead of "too sweet"? I know that he was probably feeling awkward given that we had to basically tell him to stop looking at his phone twice and he was trying to make conversation but he really needs to do better. I wished I took a picture of my poor girl's bewildered, chocolate-smeared face. I did so badly want to like this place, like I said, the products are great. The service on the other hand, leaves an awful lot to be desired.

Yelp
You pay $7.00 for a cappuccino and they serve you in a papercup!!... That's too much!!... A total disrespect to the customer, the beverage and price!!... awfullyoverpriced

Loh L.

Yelp
This pertains to the Christmas Black Forest cake. I have been eating the chocolate fudge cake for many years, despite the ever-increasing price, because I like the cake. It is delicious and has a good texture. However, the Christmas forest cake is something else. Too much cream and hardly sufficient cherries. And the price of $98 for a cake is exorbitant, doesn't justify the taste of the cake.

David C.

Yelp
We will never go back. After stopping in to pick up a birthday cake for our 4 year old, we add on some cupcakes. They didn't ask if we were eating them there or taking them away, and when we went to a section with at least 6 open tables (this is late on a Thursday night), we were informed that we could not eat there because we did not pay GST and some other charge. We happily offered to pay whatever surcharge there was so we could sit and eat with our 2 & 4 year olds, asking only for forks- no water n

Alaap T.

Yelp
The service has been deteriorating with every visit we make. They serve half the orders or wrong orders most of the time. To top it, they do not inform you of changes in the menu. We went for breakfast when there were at the most 4 occupied tables and they took 30 minutes to serve half our order. Definitely not going back
