Malta’s Hotels Are the Stuff of Dreams

"In Valletta, with its fortifications and its Baroque ornamentation, you might expect a hotel to lean heavily on historical atmosphere. AX The Saint John, however, has taken a liberal approach to its own history. This 19th-century townhouse, right in the heart of the city, has been updated in a style that’s entirely of-the-moment, even as it pays its respects to the past." - Mitchell Friedman

The staff made this experience we had for a week so enjoyable- always happy and caring to help. Great location and Rohit and his team, including the wonderful Leserlie, started our day at breakfast with joy. We had an issue with the air con and they were prompt trying to sort out. Great experience- also Grano bar is great place for night caps.

This is a top class boutique hotel. We had the family suite which was ideal for two people - loads of space. The furnishings are of the very highest quality and the room was spotlessly clean. What makes this hotel stand out is the quality of service. Staff remember you by name and more impressively remember simple preferences eg at breakfast. Not cheap but like many thinks in life you get what you pay for. Highly recommended for a high class stay right in the middle of Valletta with everything just a shirt walk away.

The hotel is a sister location to the Rosselli which is a few doors down, here is where you check in. We were welcomed by a friendly reception and offered water and a glass of prosecco on arrival which was nice. We stayed on the 1st floor and our room was positioned at the back of the hotel - away from the from the busy street front which we initially were grateful for. The room was nice and modern. Kept clean daily by the housekeeping team whom we cant fault. The location of the hotel is great, walking distance from great sights in Valletta and also good transport links. A few negatives, whilst we were positioned in the back of the hotel, there were odd sounds that we heard throughout the night, which I can only describe as banging and clanging. We also found after using the shower that water was leaking from under the wall. We did report this and was advised it was fixed however this was not the case, we didn't bother flagging again. The pillows were unfortunately horrendous; they were soft stuffed bag like (only way I can describe it). I definitely would want to rate the hotel higher as the room and location were great, but the negatives did have a big effect of sleep during our stay.

Our second stay with the AX group. We cannot praise the quality, presentation or choice at breakfast. It is a special treat to begin the day in Grain Street. The breakfast staff are superb - attentive, friendly and welcoming. |We were well received by reception and upon departure. Another of the hotel's strengths. Staff are obviously well selected and trained.|Our "comfort room" was more than satisfactory. Large, well laid out and spotlessly clean, as were the public areas. We would have appreciated a "space to relax" away from our room at the end of a busy, hot day in Valletta or beyond! Does " boutique" mean being locked away from other guests? Do today's tourists no longer enjoy mingling and chatting with others? We certainly miss it. Even at breakfast, other guests seem to be content to stay in their insular bubble or group or is it simply the type of guests attracted to the hotel?|Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a special hotel in an ever increasingly busy and hectic Valletta - that's not really for discussion in this review but we feel that it is becoming a point to consider for people planning to visit an island which holds a special place in British history culture.

An absolutely lovely hotel. Great location on a busy ancient street but well soundproofed room. There is no lobby but is attended by the AX Rosselli just a couple doors down. This review includes information about both locations combined. Staff is fabulous. We need to leave at 5am for an early flight and they offered to have the restaurant make us a special meal prior to our departure. The AX Rosselli includes 2 Michelin star restaurants plus a rooftop lounge. As you would expect, the food is phenomenal with impeccable service. (And there is another Michelin star restaurant literally 10 meters across the street. And yet another a block away.) Our room was spacious and very well appointed. Great shower and we had a balcony room looking over the street. Truly beautiful atrium and fantastic overall experience.

What a fantastic boutique hotel annexed to the stunning Rosalli hotel. Staff were superb, the rooms exceptional and more importantly "no black mould around the shower or sink". Lovely large thick soft towels which does make a difference. The breakfast was brilliant and the coffee delicious. We are staying there again on a regular basis as it was that good.

Situated right in the heart of Valletta with friendly staff and large, clean rooms. The Cheeky Monkey bar is connected to the hotel and provides a good range of pub food and drinks. You have the use of the parent hotel, just around the corner including a rooftop terrace and a pool. This was a last minute booking that really paid off!

We stayed at this fab hotel during August 2025 for 4 nights and 5 days and I must say that it was a superb choice. ||Hotel: |The hotel is located centrally on merchant street Valletta and it is 5-10 mins away from most of the attractions. For example at one end of this street you will find the bus station , the upper Baraka gardens , at johns cathedral which is couple of streets away, Valletta beach which is again 10-15 mins walk away etc. As soon as you step out of this hotel it has rows of eateries and the famous steps to eat at on st Julian’s and st Lucas streets. |The hotel has two hotels couple of doors away -St johns hotel is 4* and their other hotels couple doors away is Roselli 5* . When you check in or need the reception it is based not in St John’s but in Roselli. They offer welcome drinks on arrival and they hold your bags for you to start your adventure without the need for checking in straight away. Our room was very spacious and luxurious- the room was not what I was expecting. It did over exceed my expectations in terms of design , cleanliness and comfort. The room has iron, hair dryer , mini fridge , daily complimentary water , soaps, cotton pads and other toiletries. The WiFi worked in the hotel really well! Aircon was good , but annoyingly during the night it got to a certain temp and would switch off - this caused me to get too hot and have disrupted nights sleep! ||Staff: |Our experience would not have been superb if it was not for the staff. A special mention to :|Umair- An absolute gem who was of a very happy disposition and ensured our water was topped up and that he gave the highest , courteous service. |Naman- this man went up and beyond to make sure our experience of Valletta was the best. He made a few calls for us when we couldn’t get booking for a beach day and we were very grateful for his recommendation. |Dahy - He was so attentive , listened to what we needed and ensured we got what we asked for! |Amal - super courteous and informative . He always gave us suggestions and advice of the highest calibre. |The service of all staff we encountered was beyond anything I have experienced in other places. On observation with all walks of life their service was the highest for everyone that walked through the door! (Please give them a raise and a special recognition for the job they do!!) ||Sightseeing |The hotel is centrally located as mentioned above most attractions could be seen by walking to them. The hotel provides you with a basic map which is very helpful and Amal ensured he mapped out all the points of interest to us on this map which was easy to follow. |Transport: |We used a taxi from the airport that dropped us at the end of the road and we had to take our suit cases to the door. The taxi could not go beyond a point . We got the talijia bus card which gave use 12 journeys for 19 euros - this worked out for us which meant we could see other areas of the island. We did a lot of exploring in just the 4 days we were there! As the bus station was 10/15 mins walk from us it was very easy to get around. ||Food|We didn’t have any food at the hotel because we were always exploring and hence eating where it was convenient- however we did have drinks at the cheeky monkey bar which is based at the hotel - it has a good vibe and live music . We had drinks at the rooftop bar the grain which I would recommend . ||If I was to explore Valletta again then I would stay here without a second thought! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and for us the staff are the ones that made the first visit to Malta the best visit!! ||Thank you for all you do! ||Kind regards |Miss Sebina and Miss Valani
