An Oral History of the Food Behind Seattle’s ’90s Grunge Scene | Eater

"An early Capitol Hill Thai restaurant that introduced many locals to tom kha gai—its fragrant coconut-and-lemongrass soup—producing memorable first encounters with ingredients like galangal and helping popularize Thai flavors among the grunge-era crowd." - Bruce Pavitt

Google
We had a really bad experience here unfortunately. The $22 pad thai tasted more like chow mein with chunks of tamarind—it tasted like it was made with soy sauce? The pictures don't really communicate it, but it was very strange. And the portions were very small for the price. $22 for a tiny bowl of curry and it doesn't even come with rice? The prices are shameful—if they were more reasonable I probably wouldn't have left this review but yeah you can't be charging this much and having the food be this bad...

Google
Excellent food and a killer lunch special! It’s so cute in here too, excellent atmosphere. It’s really consistent too, been here many times and it’s always great quality food and excellent service. Put it on your regular rotation if you live in the cap hill area! Best Thai food I’ve had in the city.

Joanna Cross

Google
This place is incredible and needs more business than i see it getting! The $20 lunch special is incredible value and the quality is top notch - unfrivolous, simple food and a super warm atmosphere. The coconut prawns are amazing and the entrees never disappoint!

Google
Amazing restaurant with authentic Thai that truly moves one's palate and heart. It is a well-known local establishment and has been serving the Capital Hill community for over thirty years. The food is well-sourced and super fresh, which makes a noticeable difference. The staff is very welcoming and attentive, and the bartender is super friendly with remarkable skills and knowledge about various drinks. You should definitely ask him for an improvised cocktail. My favorite is the delightfully inventive "King's Crop-Top."

Mark Mayers

Google
Food is just ok- honestly it's ridiculously expensive. $14 for six crab Rangoon is insane. I paid $26 for the duck and it's like ten pieces of duck with some peppers and mushrooms. The rice tasted old. I go here sometimes but it's always hit/miss. It tastes like cheap takeout food and I've had better for <$20 and I paid $50 total. Not recommended, won't be coming here again.

Google
I got a Groupon that said it included in person and at home dining, but when I went to pick up my food they said they didn’t accept Groupons for takeout and I had to pay full price. It was $30 each including tip. It wasn’t horrible but it was comparatively the worst Thai food I’ve had in Seattle. I assumed I read the Groupon wrong but when I read it again there was no mention of that rule, just the at home dining option mentioned. I reached out to Groupon and they will not give me a refund and said the restaurant wants me to reach out to them to talk about it. I just want a refund.

Google
Pretty decent Thai place in Pike Street with ample seating. Dropped in to grab quick dinner with a friend and we ordered Pad Kee Mau and their house special noodles. Pad Kee Mau tasted so good, House noodles weren't that great. I'd like to give it another try sometime to check out other dishes.

Google
First time here and let me tell u the food was amazing, delicious and super fresh, we ordered the crab fried rice, pad Thai with chicken and the chicken fried rice amazing and also Thai tea didn’t disappoint at all.

Yelp
Loved this Thai spot in Cap Hill. I got the peanut noodles with tofu and it was creamy and delicious. Their cocktails were refreshing and yummy. Quick service in the middle of the day for lunch. I would definitely come back to this spot.

Yelp
I ordered a small tom yum soup and it barely tasted like Tom yum. It didn't feel it had a good sourness and mostly was salty and tasted of chili peppers. Service is very friendly here though. It's in a convenient area in cap hill but parking usually gets difficult around here. I'm sure you could find somewhere better to stumble into. Or perhaps don't get the Tom yum
google avatar

Yelp
This has been our go to Thai restaurant when visiting Cap Hill for years. Have gone through some staff changes and so the ambiance has changed. Food is still great but the loss of personality does effect the experience.

Minsoo L.

Yelp
Found this hair when I was basically done. And pad thai didn't taste like pad thai - it was just soaked in this weird sweet sauce that was too sweet. Worst "pad thai" I've ever had

Yelp
Came with a walk-in party of 5 around 8pm on a Sunday night. It was a little busy but the staff were happy to accommodate us and set up a table for 5. Service was friendly and fast. I ordered pad see ew with tofu, with a spice level of 2/5. It was a good combo of flavor and quantity, with enough leftover to take home for lunch the next day. My entree came out to about $20 after tax and tip, which I consider a little high for just one vegetarian entree. But the size of the dish basically made up for it. Would recommend Ayutthaya to anyone looking for a casual sit-down Thai dinner.

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai place in Seattle. The food is always excellent, service great and it's easy and quiet. A good place to meet friends and catch up.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and even better staff! Food is incredible, everything on the menu is amazing

Yelp
This is my go-to Thai spot in Cap Hill! I've been coming here for years now and always satisfied with the food here. Their Crab fried rice is a highlight for me! This time around, we came in for a weekday dinner and found a spot easily. Our server was really helpful with curry and noodle recommendations, since we were feeling a little indecisive. We ended ordering the Panang curry and Rad nah noodles. Both were great! The Panang curry was rich and excellent over a bowl of white rice. The Rad Nah was came with plenty of veggies and noodles and tasted amazing, although there was just a bit more sauce than what I usually prefer. Overall, had a great time as expected from a CapHill staple!

Yelp
This was the first place I had Thai food over 25 years ago. A friend and I were going to go to Taku but he forgot his ID. So when I saw this place was still open I suggested it. I used to work on the hill and this was a regular of the gang I worked with my go to was their phad see ew. On this visit I decided to try their COCONUT CHICKEN it was listed as one of the specialties. I had grabbed an ice cream before cause I had time to waste before meeting my friend so I knew I wouldn't eat my entire meal and wanted something I knew would reheat well. Also my friend got the crab fried rice so I wanted to get something comparable in price. Food was still delicious and comforting. Service was friendly and food came out quickly. It was nice to see this family owned restaurant was still around. The Seahawk game was on this Thursday and it obvious the owners were fans in their jerseys and the game on in the bar. Was nice to go back and visit the place I had my first experience with Thai food.

Yelp
I'm used to be a regular. The food has gone downhill. Past 2 orders to go have been wrong. Completely wrong items. Both time they told me I would get a refund but then nothing. So many great Thai options in this area. They need to step it up.
google avatar

Ruchita L.

Yelp
Food was okay and they only have one vegan option which tastes more like a peanut dip than a curry. Fine as long as you're not vegan.

David H.

Yelp
Good food, great service, green curry was delicious, but a bit too hot for a number 2

Isa C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for two years and love it. My favorite is the spicy basil fried rice. The service each time is wonderful.
google avatar

Augustin R.

Yelp
I got the Larb, with ground chicken. Usually going to Thai restaurants I opt for the ever faithful pad Thai or pad see ew, but I recognized the name larb so I tried it and it was delicious. It had a very nice refreshing, citrusy, and tangy tamarind taste. If I could drink the vinaigrette it was served in I would. I got a level 3 spice, which I didn't think was too spicy, but my friend got the fish curry and he was sweating heavily, so maybe ask about how intense the spice is if you're not someone who manages it well. I think my only complaint with the dish was the plating. The plate was maybe a little too small for the serving size, or it could be in a mess and I don't have decent eating habits. It was also served with an almost half wedge of cabbage. I believe this was meant to be be peeled leaf by leaf, but the cabbage size was a little awkward and didn't work that well as a serving vessel. But overall very delicious and would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Still wonderful. Excellent thai, great service (Boon is wonderful) and such Seattle history. They say Capitol Hill is experiencing an epidemic of frat boys and entitled young couples, but the today's view from the corner window table of Ayuttahaya showed the soul of the neighborhood to be intact.
google avatar

Eric Z.

Yelp
I got the Pad See Ew from here for takeout. It was relatively quick for the food to be ready and the service was friendly. While the portion was very filling, the Pad See Ew was not as good. The Pad See Ew was a bit bland and not as good as I was expecting.
google avatar

Shivani K.

Yelp
Randomly chose this place for dinner and it became our weekly go to spot! The food is delicious and fresh, the drinks are amazing as well! Definitely try the yellow curry fried rice and the special Thai curry! Try the cinnamon monkey drink for a real experience! 10/10. Everyone needs to check this business out!

Yelp
I haven't stopped in to Ayutthaya since I lived on Capitol Hill (back when mankind feared for dinosaur attacks) but we were in Seattle for the garden show so we decided to head up the Hill to try it. Ayutthaya is celebrating 30 years in business and it surprised me that this would mean that when I used to lunch here it was relatively new. We ordered the three curries with roti to start and had an order of the crab fried rice, Ayutthaya noodles with squid, and a pad Thai with prawns. The review might be colored by the fact that we were starving by the time we walked up. The Ayutthaya noodles are still as flavorful as I remembered. The squid was a nice accompaniment to the wide noodles. The pad Thai was saucy than I recalled but tasted good. The crab fried rice, which I don't think I had back when we dodged dinosaurs, was very good. The only nitpick would be that you crunched into the occasional shell fragment - but at least you know it's real crab that way! It's a venerable Thai place on Cap Hill and still worth visiting if you're in the mood for Thai.

Yelp
Food was average. Pad see ew was not seasoned Chicken larb and crispy garlic chicken was pretty decent. Spicy eggplant stir fry wasn't anything special although it was spicy. Portions are large, I had plenty of leftovers after dinner.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at Ayutthaya Thai. The food was absolutely delicious. Bya was our server and he was very attentive and was a delightful person. Recommendations were spot on for what we were craving!!! Thank you so much for this excellent experience!

Steve W.

Yelp
The food is great! Still owned by the original owner's family, the service is friendly and attentive, and the interior is warm and easy on the eyes. I have gone there since the year it opened, and when I return again, I am always glad that I did!
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed a quick lunch at this Thai restraint restaurant on the corner of a high foot traffic intersection. I came during a post-lunch craze hour, so the restaurant was fairly empty. The servers were incredibly kind and quick to come and check on my table. Overall would highly recommend for a quick bite if you can snag a table near the windows.

Zoe L.

Yelp
Service is always great! Food is even better! And ambiance is so nice, it feels like a quiet get away in such a busy area. I would 100% recommend coming here, way more affordable than other Thai in the area and you get great portions. Bya was our server and he is the best ever!

Dylan L.

Yelp
Service was nice and it had an inviting interior, but there are better Thai food options in the area.
google avatar

Hiral P.

Yelp
Decent food. Below average for Seattle Thai food. Pad woon zen was not good, pad khee mao was better. It was kind of annoying how the takeout boxes/bags were leaking when we picked it up. Service in terms of order-pickup time was fairly quick which was a plus
google avatar

Debasmita R.

Yelp
Pretty good Thai food! We got the pad kee maos and the crispy garlic chicken and we chose 4 spice level for everything but it wasn't spicy at all. The noodles were really good and tasty but the crispy garlic chicken tasted more like orange chicken and it was dry on the inside. I also got a thai iced tea that was refreshing!
google avatar

Yelp
Their tamarind chicken is very tasty--I don't think many Thai places in the area serve this! I've been here a few times and haven't strayed away from this dish--definitely will be trying other dishes in the near future. Their service is great. I also really liked their mule :)
google avatar

Yelp
Long standing customers, the food is always excellent! Service is immaculate! Whether it's delivery or dine in, best Thai in the city!! 100/10

Yelp
I really dislike leaving bad reviews and I really wanted to like this place because of the convenience to my work but it's just not good. I've given them a few chances and I think the food is really lacking. I ordered the Phad Thai, the noodles were all wrapped up inside of eggs like an omelette. It was literally an omelette with noodles inside. Really weird. I've also tried the Pad Se Ew which was very dry, there was very little sauce, vegetables were hard and undercooked, and the noodles were stuck together? It's a shame because it's in a great location! I will say, however, their crab Rangoons are to die for and the Tom Kha is not bad. Still giving a 3 because there are much better options in the area.

Alex H.

Yelp
I've been coming here for nearly 15 years, and hope I can keep coming for 15 more. The food is delicious - I especially love the Tom Yum soup with its rich broth and perfectly cooked veggies. The staff are extremely friendly and I love the big windows and decor. A family favorite and a neighborhood institution.

Natalie B.

Yelp
Get carry out most of the time. Large portions which are good for leftovers. The crab delights have an overwhelming pepper flavor. I love these typically but they were not my favorite from here.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Wow, this place is SO GOOD! Ordered the crispy garlic chicken (favorite), Pad See Ew, Tom Kah Yum w/ shrimp. All was amazing! highly recommended!
google avatar

Mikela D.

Yelp
Walking through cap hill and ran into this place! Wow so delicious. Humongous portions, fresh and tasty food. Ordered coconut curry, sweet and sour veggies and pad ki mao. All super super delicious. The service was on the slower side due to one cook, but that's okay. Servers were kind and did whatever they could to make us happy. Really loved this place and will return when in the area 10/10!!!
google avatar

Smith S.

Yelp
By far the best Thai in sesttle. The noodle dishes, the peanut sauce, the pad Thai is all insanely delicious. I've been recommending this place since I got here thirty years ago. Not a better value in Thai food in this city. Rust me. I've tried.
google avatar

Yoona L.

Yelp
Delicious and central. We love Thai food but have been let down countless times by Thai restaurants with good to great reviews online. While it's not the best Thai, it's certainly a solid place to get your Thai fix. But just a note of caution: they don't mess with spice! So if you are sensitive to spice, definitely recommend downgrading that spice level down a notch! Stir fry duck dish was delicious but still pretty spicy at a 2. I might just go with 1 for next time. Also noticed the dishes get saltier the higher you go on the spice scale. Perhaps their spice mix also has some sodium in it? We also got a Prik King dish at level 3 and it was a lot saltier. Appetizers of spring rolls and Tom Kha were also delicious and comparatively better than other places. Would most definitely return!

Rachel L.

Yelp
I don't write reviews often but I got takeout here, and it was definitely the worst Pad Thai I've ever had... the noodles were super dry with no flavor and the egg was like a strange layer over the noodles and was really over cooked and burnt. Definitely would not try again, many better places to choose from
google avatar

Mikaila D.

Yelp
Everyone!!!!!!!! We ordered this food for takeout during the pandemic, and they were so amazing to us! I have an egg yolk allergy, and they cleaned the pan before they made our stuff. The food was incredibly delicious, and they were so ridiculously gracious to us! I would recommend this place 100 to one, no matter what. Absolutely wonderful humans and insanely ridiculously delicious food. 100 Stars.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
The takeout I got from Ayutthaya Thai was pretty awful. I got Crab Delight for appetizer. It tasted like deep fried pastry filled with cream cheese. I couldn't taste any crab in it. For the main I ordered Tamarind Chicken. Each piece was mostly batter, very little chicken. It was overcooked and the sweet and sour sauce was not good. The entire dish had 3 cashews in it. I won't be going back given how little quality ingredients they were in both dishes, and the poor flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is incredible and the staff is SO kind. Seriously comparable to the food we had on our trip to Thailand this year. Love it! We eat here all the time.

Yelp
VISIT HISTORY: - Last visit: 3 weeks ago with my mom during lunch hour. I feel super meh-diocre about this place and it's taken me three tries to finish the review. - Frequency: First time - Visit again? No. - underwhelming and mediocre food and experience & there are so many thai options around Seattle although the location is good. FOO(D)RINK: - Papaya salad: Was pretty spicy. Small portions for my hungry tummy. - Pineapple fried rice: My mom got this and it was pretty buttery. As much as I love butter... a bit of an overkill maybe? I was pretty hungry though so I finished hers - well balance of meat and veggies. Sometimes fried rice is a restaurants way to skimp you out on meat but alas, this was not the case. VIB(E)XPERIENCE: - We came in at that awkward time of between lunch and dinner so there we were one of the two occupied tables. 4-5 staff hanging around by the bar. - Service was adequate. - Noise level: We were one of two tables filled. So pretty low. - Wait time for foo(d)rink arrival: 16 minutes and 31 seconds. I found this a bit unusual as there was only one other table that was at the restaurant... so maybe that means the food is made fresh to order but still seems much longer.... - Wait time for our check: almost immediate!

Angela E.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in Seattle. We try to go almost every week. Food is delicious and everyone who works there is super friendly and welcoming. It feels like a home away from home. I am grateful to have this wonderful place in my neighborhood!!!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE They lied to us and were rude about it. So... we chose to do take-out at Ayutthaya, because we recently moved to the neighborhood. Their online service was fairly simple (if you looked past some of their sketchy pricing) and the food said it would be ready in 10-15 minutes.... sweet. We get there 15 minutes after we got confirmation that it was in fact ready and it wasn't. Ok, that could be fine, but then they were completely rude about it and it took another 20 minutes... Wow... how does one rescind the tip? Update... we got home and all the food had spilled
google avatar

stephanie p.

Yelp
Something has changed with the flavors in the food. Searched to see if maybe the restaurant had been sold/changed hands, but didn't find anything. Maybe just an off day?
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
Delightful gem we found by accident! Stopped by for lunch. I had a red curry chicken and my wife had shrimp over noodles. Both were ample portions and full flavored - seasoned exactly as ordered. Thank you for making our lunch a special treat!
google avatar

Ravleen K.

Yelp
I'm really surprised by the overall low ratings here. I've dined in twice and had the best experience with the service, drinks, and food. Ayutthaya is my go-to for Thai in the Cap Hill area. The Twisted Thai tea is delicious and their drunken noodles, Thai fried rice, curry sampler with roti, and duck curry are great!
google avatar

Jasmine D.

Yelp
I ordered through DoorDash and got the beef salad and crab wontons. The salad was such a large portion and had a lot of sauce which was good. I love how flavorful and it wasn't too spicy (I ordered 3 stars). The crab wontons seemed to be made from real crab meat which was nice. I'll definitely be ordering their beef salad again.

Pam D.

Yelp
We ordered and had delivered as part of a celebratory weekend. I hate paying good money for bad food. The fried "eggrolls" were too doughy and not enough filling. I couldn't get past the overly sweet and excessively oniony pad thai. The coconut mushroom soup was decent. Overall the food and flavour was sub-par and highly disappointing. The only positive thing we have to say is spice level and eco friendly was spot on. Highly disappointed and waste of good money.
