Yelp
Holy crap on a cracker! When you see a Yelp listing with a 5-star average, you take note. Then you read the reviews and it sounds great! AND, they have sopapillas! No one has those where you're from! (No one even knows what they are in Illinois--I ask at every Mexican restaurant, and only 1 has known so far. LOL It's a New Mexico/AZ thing mostly.)The anticipation builds, knowing that it could all lead to disappointment if it doesn't live up to expectations. But, you're a free spirit, an adventurer, so you take a chance...albeit there's little risk when it's 5 stars, whatever, I'm trying to paint a picture here. Well, your adventuresome spirit is about to be rewarded my friend! Azada, with its rogue 'Z', hits the mark. You will not be disappointed today!
And so, traveling through CO, we eagerly planned our stop at Azada. The pics looked a little divey-- it kind of is, but I'm down with that. It's actually like a divey, much more authentic, Chipotle; same concept. We'd heard how friendly the owner/employees were. They were indeed; charmed perhaps by my eager awkwardness, you say? Probably. ;) Many reviews mentioned being able to sample all the meats first-- you definitely can, but they are all so good, it does not really make your decision any easier. The majority of my time spent here was in deciding what kind of meat I would get.
I decided on a bowl with half green chili, half red chili, and as far apart from each other as possible. I'm a purist. You can add all the usual suspects: beans (& they have some with chorizo), salsas, cheese, lettuce, potatoes, various rices, etc. The bowl, while not overflowing, was of adequate size and only $6. I could have handled a larger portion. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in flavor! The green chili pork (Colorado green chili) was spicy and bursting with flavor. Amazing. The red chili beef was fantastic as well. I'm a huge carne adovada fanatic (another New Mexican dish) and this was basically that, so I was over the moon. Hubby was equally pleased with his bowl as well. Another stop on our return trip was eminent. Of this, there was no debate.
Also noteworthy, the horchata is made freshly every day, one if the best we've ever had. The sopapillas were $3.50 for 4 poofy pillows served with some delicious honey to drizzle over, and while they weren't the best ever, they were still damn good. I am not complaining one bit. They also make and sell their own homemade tortillas, bonus. I do have to stress again, although I favored the chilis, all the meats were delicious. For example, the carnitas, a roasted pork, had less seasoning than typical, but still robust in flavor, strong roasted flavor if that makes sense. In addition to the fairly large dining areas, there is a small 2 table patio outside, perfect if you have the pups with you, assuming other pups and bicycles are already occupying said patio. If that happens. Just walk half a block down to the park on the corner and dine al fresco! That's what we did and it was lovely. :-)
As I said, a return trip would happen, and it did and I even bought some red and green chili with their respective meats by the pound to take back home in our cooler since I knew our fridge would be empty. (Who wants to cook or shop after a 20 hour car ride? Not this girl!) That was $15 a pound so I only got half a pound of each as it was kinda pricey. It held up well, even better really with all the flavors marrying.
Yelpers nailed this one. I can't wait to try a burrito next time, hopefully and there will be many next times. If you stop, plan to shop. It's a really cute little area full of all kinds of retail shops, bakeries, costume shops, and so much more. I just don't think you can go wrong here. Oh, and they are working on a liquor license too, hello Ms. Margarita! ;) Yay for road trip adventures and excellent Yelping prowess! :))
