We were really excited to have dinner at Sa Mandra, as we had read so many glowing reviews beforehand. We visited with our two teenage daughters, who – to our delight – tasted almost everything and enjoyed the meal as much as we did. The setting is absolutely beautiful, and the food, prepared with fresh local ingredients, is truly delicious.
That said, a few aspects left us disappointed. The dessert course was underwhelming: we weren’t told that what was served was actually the final dessert, and both the portion size and presentation felt more like a small tasting than a real ending to the dinner. We kept waiting, thinking something else might follow, but it never came, and towards the end the staff seemed to lose interest in our table. To add to the confusion, I only learned from another guest where payment was supposed to be made.
The biggest letdown, however, was the payment process. My credit card had already been charged the full amount a few days before the dinner as a pre-authorization. Even though I mentioned this, I was asked to pay again on-site. I was assured that the first charge would be reversed, but two days later the amount was still blocked. After further follow-up, it turned out I had indeed been charged twice. While I eventually received the refund, it only came through after almost two weeks, partly due to slow processing by my bank.
Overall, the place itself and the food are outstanding and well worth experiencing, but the payment issues unfortunately left us with mixed feelings.
