Tacos In Dallas: Where to Find the City’s Best | Eater Dallas

"This splashy food truck dishes out miniature fry bread tacos with a Mexican cap. Hence, their name: Mayan Tacos. Served two per order, the tacos are topped with a pyramid of crema, crumbled white cheese, tomatoes, onions, not-iceberg lettuce, juicy chicken and refried beans. Follow them on social media and catch them often at the Truck Yard, where they frequently serve." - José R. Ralat

To be honest, I am not a big fan of Latino cuisine, but it doesn't mean their food isn't good, I just didn't have much chance to explore them formally yet. I have tried some Mexican & Pan-Latin food many times before, but never from real restaurant. This is first time for me, and I'm already hooked now. This place is very close to my home but I just had paid attention on their menu and it looks so variety, yummy and interesting. I choose Carne Asada, that the famous one I heard among their food. It was really tasty with marinated and grilled perfectly, (medium), so that make me quite sure others their dishes will be great too. I ordered take out, so I can't say much about the service, anyway everything went smoothly, food was ready for picking up when I arrived and the staff knew their job right away. Moreover, I could see inside the restaurant, it is so charming and lively decoration. (As bar style) It is spacious dining room and some patio seats are available outside. Very convenient to stop by, and huge free parking lots at Layhill Shopping Center.

Stopped for lunch on our first visit; will definitely be back!! Friendly, prompt service in an unexpectedly pleasant atmosphere. Reasonable prices—very good food! And the salsa served with complimentary chips is superb!!

The atmosphere was great however, the same CANNOT be said about the food and service. From when the waiter approached us, he seemed to be in a rush, even though we were the only ones there. He was not very friendly or approachable. The food came without the accompanying sides. My family waited an extra 10 minutes for the sides to come out. The portion sizes were small and the food was very salty. Definitely did not tip anything extra besides the 18% that They added on my check. First time and last time going to that restaurant. I recommend to the owner to please hire friendly staff and have a better way of serving the food. Rather than coming little by little put multiple people at the same table and bring everything out at the same time. It was supposed to be a nice family get together, but instead, we were treated very rudely. I could’ve definitely spent more money than I did, But due to the poor quality of food and customer service, I will not be going back.

Google
My experience at this restaurant was extremely bad. We ordered three steak entrées and we got one small bowl of beans for all three plates. Then we order Mojito and they said they don’t have Mint for it then we order a fried ice cream that had cereal on top of it not the coconut. And the prices for each entree were ridiculous and the service was ridiculous We asked to speak to the owner, believe it or not when we brought everything to his attention he said that we have to tell the server how we want beans bowls Separated. Is unbelievable that you come to a restaurant but you have to tell how you want each thing to be served. Please do not come to Azucar do not come. Go to Chido’s Mexican in route 1 Ho they will serve you like a king like a queen and they will have food to get you full

Google
This restaurant describes itself as "fine Mexican and Latin American dining", so maybe I set my expectations too high based on the "fine dining". There was nothing wrong with the food I ordered, but it did not meet expectations. The Shrimp Tacos ($20) were meagerly filled, and served with white rice(?) and a small portion of beans. The atmosphere is lively and the staff was friendly.

Google
Great place for a quiet lunch. The seafood enchiladas were delicious, though we substituted flour tortillas instead of the corn listed in the menu. The guacamole was very good, and served in a crisp tortilla bowl. The complimentary hot salsa and chips were delicious.

As a new patron of AZUCAR we were greeted with cordiality and in a respectful manner. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful. Andrea was most helpful and answered any questions we had. An overall pleasant experience.

Google
The food was not as good as it looked in the pictures. The plate is ordered only had 3 strips of stake and 3 shrimps, accompanied with a small portion of rice, beans, Pico de gallo, guacamole, and sour cream with tortillas on the side. I feel like the meat was very little for a plate of $25. I think I could have gotten more food elsewhere. I'm not very happy with the food I was served.

Yelp
We came here for drinks and snacks on our way home from Baltimore and sat at the bar. We got the skinny colada, and three pupusas. The drink was $12 which I found to be a bit pricey for a general drink with rum and pineapple juice. The pupusas were pretty good; cheese was the favorite. The salsa and chips were amazing and come with the meal. The salsa is one of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant. It was warm and had the right level of spices. We will come back in the future for a proper sit down dinner experience.

B W.

Yelp
The service was not great, waited 25 minutes for our meal to be served. The restaurant only had a few tables seated as it was early evening. The waitress was possibly new and lacked basic understanding of customer service. The food was subpar, two tiny tacos and beans, rice for $20. Mediocre at best. Chicken soup that was awful. Never returning here.

Yelp
The main problem here on my visit was service. Had to ask for chips, water, salsa several times. Not sure what happened to our orders, but it took 45 minutes to get the food. The food was generally good at our 6 top, however portions were smaller than average and expensive for what you get, and the food just Ok. I would come back to try something else, just carry out next time.

Yelp
I've been to Azucar twice and it's very good. I love that they have Latin cuisine and not just Mexican food. The refried beans and black beans are SO tasty!

Yelp
A random find but so delicious!! Came here early evening and was pleasantly surprised with the large seating and very well put together place. Love the salsa dip. The fajita platter was especially yum. I would come again and it would be a great place for a large party too.
google avatar

Lisa K.

Yelp
Great food. Ordered beef burrito, and steak frajita, everything was fresh and delicious.

Kathryn L.

Yelp
This was my go to restaurant because it is a nice clean place, has great service, and food has always been delicious, that was until last night. We were celebrating a new home for a friend, we were ignored for 15 minutes, then a server that said he was assigned to us, was less than attentive the entire dinner, our food took a long time and when it arrived, it was Lukewarm. The server was disrespectful to my husband who complained twice to the hostess and manager. We asked for the bill and he walked right past us, therefore, we went up to the manager to pay. The manager was apologetic again and said we did not need to pay. We were willing to pay but wanted to withhold a tip. The manager said he would take the bill. Three people who loved this place are not to eager to return.
google avatar

Yelp
Three stars because of the food but would have given them 1 star for the terrible service. This is a local place and I love specific items on their menu. We sat at a table in the bar because the place was packed. First set of drinks were quick but quickly went downhill from there. 20 min later we finally ordered another drink and asked if they could take our dinner order. We ordered the combination fajitas and the seafood chimichanga. About 15min later we received our food but the fajitas only had shrimp. So had to ask for the steak to be added. Their food is really good it's just sad their service was so bad that night.
google avatar

Kat C.

Yelp
We ordered shrimp in a garlic sauce with the bread appetizer (I can't remember the name). The piece of bread was so tiny and pretty sure was still raw. I got the chipotle shrimp; I've cooked with chipotle before and it was no where to be found in my dish. In conclusion very mid. Disappointing especially because it was my birthday.

Yelp
My Check-In was so positive because I was greeted with such a warm welcome by the bartender! But, I have waited over 30 minutes for my carry-out order! People that arrived later than me were served their food before me! I had to ask for an update on my order... It seems like you get special treatment/ extra nice conversation if you speak Spanish but not so much if you only speak English.

Girum S.

Yelp
I made a to go order. I didn't mind that it took long despite their being very little people but the waiter was staring me down because I didn't tip on a to go order. She might of been offended also because I put a line through where you write the payment amount. I don't trust a soul when it comes to stuff like that. The entitlement is crazy, on a to go order?!? She was staring at me like she wanted to hurt me smh. I was going to not even write a review or give it 3 stars because at least the foods edible. I got the spinach and mushroom chicken. Taste like hospital food. For 26 dollars I could of had a ball at Panera. That's what I get for trying to support a local business smh. Never coming back there again.

Yelp
The food at Azucar is okay - nothing special. Their bar area, however, is really lacking. It's too small, has no table service, and has a very limited offering. I wish they would expand into some of their very large dining area and improve their selection.
google avatar

Yelp
I came to Azucar with a group of 3. I ordered the lobster special. My company ordered enchiladas and churrasco. Average price for any dish seems to be 20 or over. My dish was $44. I My lobster was tasty, but did not wow me. My sides were vegetables and rice. The sides were very bland. The rice was sticky and flavorless. The churrasco was bad. They didn't give us chimichurri sauce that's a big no no. The enchiladas were tasty and the sauce on top of the enchiladas was delicious. Service is great. We were seated fast on a busy night. Our waiter and manager kept checking on us constantly. The staff was friendly overall. Ambience is great. Saturday night They have live music. Other nights are fairly quiet. Finally, I probably come back to Azucar, but this restaurant is not on top of my restaurant list.
google avatar

Demond S.

Yelp
On my latest visit during COVID, I ordered ahead as usual. I waited 45 minutes before I drove over to get my food. It ended taking them 1h15m to 1H20m to prepare my order. When my order came out, it was missing several items. This is the 3rd time this has happened since January. My experience in dine-in service is better. For take-out service, you may want to consider longer than usual wait times but definitely check your order before leaving so you don't have to make two trips as I have in the past. On a good note, the food is very flavorful and colorful. Bon Apetit.

Yelp
One day I buy a cheviche, next day is 1/2 side. I do not have to write to much just look at the picture.
google avatar

Jane F.

Yelp
Super disappointed with my experience here from the premixed margarita to the fajita plates that i paid $24 for where i got 2 pieces of steak 2 pieces of chicken and 3 butterflied shrimp! The plate didn't even come sizzling to the table. I will not be returning they are ripping peoples heads off with this.
google avatar

Giovanni S.

Yelp
Happy Hour is only for outside sitting FYI! Something their website does not mention. The Food & Drinks are Great! Ceviche is amazing.
google avatar

Margarita B.

Yelp
The prices here are ridiculous! $150 for two pitchers of margaritas. It's ridiculous. Don't dine here. We spoke to the manager and she was unwilling to resolve this. When I mentioned she was losing 4 customers she didn't care. We're never coming back!

B R.

Yelp
They ignored my son's order and they took 1 hour to deliver the food. The waiter walked by several times without even making eye contact, and then after promising the food would be out soon, left us sitting another 15 minutes. The loud music made it hard to talk. The food is good, but the staff is pretty clueless for these price points, which are not cheap.

Odalis D.

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars I would. My party & I didn't get our orders taken till an hour of sitting down. Then my friend didn't get his appetizer till an HOUR later & it was just guacamole & chips.. didn't get our food till almost TWO hours later when it was almost closing time. Mind you the servers also never came to check up on us, we would get up & order our drinks from the bar. Horrible experience

Yelp
Probably one of the lower rated restaurants that I have ever been to. I don't get why when I enter with my husband either the old lady or the other female waiters always speaks in Spanish to us.. it makes no sense to me. I barely speak it and just because my husband does doesn't mean you need to assume. Like treat every customer equally. You wouldn't be speaking in Spanish to a white person if they came in. They only make eye contact with him and never with me.. it's the weirdest thing in the world. Even when I reply in English it's like they are mad about it. I don't know why they have waiters that barely speak English let alone don't know the drinks. I was there and asked for a Bombay Sapphire with sprite and the waitress didn't even know what a Bombay Sapphire was and told me they didn't have it and then had the Josh (who is in fact the best waiter/bartender/ I think manager there) come to the table and he asked me what I wanted. I told him and he was like yeah we have it. He wasn't sure why she was confused. Get this, then she came back to the table and was like oh you pronounced it wrong. I did not, I have been drinking this for 12 years. She told me it's pronounced MUBUMBUY and I was like it's pronounced BOMB-BAY not MUBUMBUY. She literally had the nerve to tell me that when she didn't know what it was? Nice coverup but no. I'm part Indian, I think i would know how to pronounce BOMB-BAY. It's Bombay. Its not hard. It's ok to learn but don't play off like it was my problem. Then she went to the other table and the guy order a jack and coke and she didn't know what Jack Daniels was... she had to go ask Josh again. Like all she did was try to speak Spanish with my husband and ignore me because she didn't speak good English. Like literally Josh shouldn't do her job because she's useless... I would also like to say this place used to be great. But they got cocky and now the food quality went down, the service went down, I mean I wish this place was like it used to be.

Bill M.

Yelp
I was there last night with a golf group. Not only was the service horrible (took forever to get drinks, food, or water), but they brought the wrong pitchers of margaritas--pitchers which were also filled 3/4 with ice. The excitement came when the checks arrived. The regular margarita pitcher was priced at $45, but on our checks were for $65. When questioned, the staff brought out the manager who was immediately confrontational. It's interesting that as we walked into the restaurant, an older couple leaving told a member of our group to watch out because they overcharge on the check. We chuckled that one off, but I guess we should have listened. The manager took $10 off my check, but made it known that she was doing it begrudgingly. Still...it was more than what we ordered. Oh well.....we didn't leave a tip (which I've never done before....that's for how irritating the manager was) and let them know we'd never be back. Oh....and as I left....I told the other patrons to watch their checks because they were overcharging. It was an unnecessarily ugly scene.

Yelp
I visited this place several weeks ago with a friend who said their nachos and drinks were great. I was certainly not impressed with their service. The food was mediocre, the hospitality was lackluster and the waitress was not attentive. Our food arrived over and hour late, our appetizers were also late. The chips and cheese....... the CHEESE! Was horrible. My head was throbbing because the cheese was high in sodium. I ordered the steak and it was sitting in a pool of oil. I was so nauseous the next day. The waitress seemed to be annoyed anytime I asked for silverware, beverages and an ETA on our food. I will never go there again
google avatar

Virginia R.

Yelp
I have eaten here several times and it's always been pretty good (a little overpriced) but we had only dined in, this was our first time doing take out. The take out was ridiculous, their FIFTEEN dollar nachos were less than 10 tortilla chips with melted cheese that was already cold even though picked it up as soon as it was ready and we live 5 min away. Most of the food was cold and the guacamole was already turning brown. The foods packaging was also leaking, needless to say their way of packing takeout sucks. For having spent over $70 I think the amount of food and how it was served was prosperous. On a more positive note, this is the ONLY time they have gotten the doneness of the meat in our order right. All the times we've dined in, they had overcooked the meat but this time it was on point. If we do decide to give this restaurant another try though I doubt it, it will only be dine in.

Edwin S.

Yelp
Terrible place expencive and the food is not that good i hope to never comeback to that place
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
I ordered the Lomo Saltado: My dish arrived hot, plenty of onions, fries, meat, etc. Very tasty - five stars *****
google avatar

James V.

Yelp
Went during lunch. I was surprised they didn't have a lunch menu with smaller portions. A friend had the Caribbean salad, which could have served two. I decided on two side items; the taco and corn tamales. Both were excellent! The service was attentive and prompt.
google avatar

Kay R.

Yelp
We ordered the nachos al carbon appetizer. We got 4 chips for $8, which I found to be an insulting price for the portion. The second disappointment was the margaritas. The menu says "many varieties" of margaritas, half pitchers for $19.95. When we received our bill, our half pitcher was $34.95. We asked the waitress (not our original waitress probably because she knew she did something very deceptive) why the price was so much higher than the advertised price, and she told us it was the upsell to Patron. Not once during the conversation about margaritas, were the following words spoken: "Patron," "top shelf," "upsell," "34.95"or "more expensive."
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
This restaurant is a mile from my house, and I've visited occasionally over the last several years. The food has always been good, but the service has been hit or miss. Sometimes I'll get a good server who checks back almost too often. Other times I'll get a server who can't be bothered. On my last visit, I waited a long time before a server ever appeared. He didn't speak any English, and after he took my order, he never returned. A runner brought my food, and I had to flag down a manager to get my bill. Sometimes when I've been there by myself, I haven't gotten chips and salsa, unlike every other table around me; I assume they think it's not worth it for one person. And sometimes there's live music that's so loud it drowns out any attempt at conversation.
google avatar

L H.

Yelp
Love this place. My family and I come here once a week. The service is first-rate and the food excellent.

Gloryann B.

Yelp
I have been visiting this restaurant for 10 years and recently is a big disappointment. The wait time for 3 people on a non busy day is ridiculous. We arrived here at 2:30pm order our drinks and food right away and by 3:30 we ended up getting our food. Other tables that order after us end up getting their food fast and the attention to them was impeccable. The food was cold, the carbonara pasta with chicken was too salty specially the bacon pieces. Never the less we will not be returning.
google avatar

Danny B.

Yelp
My wife and I went to Azucar and had a great time. The ambiance in the restaurant is very welcoming, the walls are very colorful. The chips and salsa are excellent, the chips are thin and salty, and the salsa is warm, which is how salsa should be served, as if it just came off the stove. The food here is really good and the portions are large. This is not really tex/mex, it's more of a South American feel, but they also sell pupusas. The carne asada here is very good whatever meal you get, you definitely want to have rice and beans come with it, the rice here is white rice, but it's excellent. The lomo or pollo saltado is really good here too and the French fries and portions of meat or chicken are big too. If you come here, you're going to get good quality food, you may have to wait a little longer than you'd like for your food to come out, by the food is great. Also, if you like flan, they have excellent flan here, and I mean excellent!
google avatar

Kayon N.

Yelp
I've been here back to back for the past few dayss now just for the frozen margarita and chips and dip! Today, I tried the mussels , steak quesadilla and wings and waS not disappointed! I look forward to coming here again and getting entertained by Joshua! He's so sweet and funny!

Yelp
What a gem! I passed by this neighborhood and no pretentious restaurant many times but I never stopped by. The beef tongue stew brought back my childhood memory. It was so tender and well flavored. The ceviche micro was excellent with good size mixed seafood. The house made Tres Leches was a nice touch too delicious meal. The interior is nice, open, and clean. The service and wait staff are professional. Good things do not have to come with a price. Two thumbs up.
google avatar

B N.

Yelp
Sorry I do not feel comfortable ordering from here again. One person even paid $5.00 for a large and still only received 4 chips.
google avatar

Prity K.

Yelp
They don't deliver so I placed an order on the phone. I ordered a chicken chimichanga and a tortilla with cheese for my granddaughter. Also 2 bottles of coke. It wasn't ready when I went in. It was Friday night and they were busy. I waited at the bar. They forgot to give me my sodas so good thing I checked before leaving. The food was bland and lacked flavor. No chips/salsa. The upside was that it was fresh. For $30.00 plus , I wasn't t impressed.
google avatar

Talia Y.

Yelp
I've been coming here since August, and they have the BEST chips and salsa !! The chips are thin , crispy with the perfect amount of salt. We always get the shrimp and chicken fajitas and they are delicious. Definitely worth coming.
google avatar

Allyssa T.

Yelp
We ordered carry out from here and the food was okay but the service was horrible! They forgot an order of tacos and refused to give us the tacos. They were very disrespectful and unprofessional. Also, you can't assume everyone doesn't know how to speak spanish when you decide to talk about people in spanish. Some people come from bilingual households. I will never spend my money here again.
google avatar

Tiane J.

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem! They are always accommodating for all different types of crowds and I love coming here for a quick bite or even a family dinner. There is a full dining room and a separate bar area if you want to grab a drink. The staff is always friendly and pleasant. The food is really delicious! My go to is a steak chimichanga (there is a slight up charge for the steak). I also love the guacamole, fajitas, carne asada, wings (can you tell I frequent this establishment ). My absolute favorite are the pupusas! The chicharron pupusas are so good! A must try. Honestly, all of the food is pretty amazing and I have yet to try something that I didn't like. The only, only, ONLY, downside is that they do not have a kids menu. Luckily, I was able to order plain fried chicken wings and a side of fries as a makeshift kids dinner. That is the only thing I think they need to work on. Had they had a kids menu, I may have added another star. There are some nights you can hear live music as well which is a plus. A stop here is a must for authentic Mexican and Pan-Latin Cuisine!!
google avatar

Jes U.

Yelp
The absolute best. This is our family's favorite restaurant and our go to for all special occasions hands down. Delicious food, awesome staff (Josh rocks), and all a family owned restaurant!

Natalie P.

Yelp
This place is just terrible. I was always reticent of the service- if you don't speak Spanish they will not get to you - but then today I bought tortilla soup to bring to a hospital patient and it's literally a giant piece of corn and some carrots. In what world is this tortilla soup??

Monique J.

Yelp
I was very disappointed. He swiped my card three times and it was declined each time. I had plenty of money on the card, but I left. I called my credit card company and my card is fine. THERE WAS NO RECORD OF THE TRANSACTION. Maybe their machines weren't working or maybe they were only accepting cash today. He should have tried to write a manual transaction but he was in a hurry. I wasted my time, worrying about my card number being stolen. I will never go back.
google avatar

Rumit P.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for lunch a few days ago on Sunday. We were greeted quickly by a friendly host. The interior is huge (they evidently expanded from a smaller space after an adjacent hardware store shut down) and has plenty of tables and booths. We were not offered preference for seating (table or booth) but were seated at a booth in the center of the restaurant, which we preferred anyway. The restaurant offers complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was fresh and homemade but did not taste like traditional salsa; it had a sharp, overripe tomato taste that did not please me (but I ate it anyway because, well, salsa). I ordered cheese enchiladas and an on-the-rocks margarita with salt; both were a large portion, tasted delicious, and was made exactly as I requested. Note that the refried beans are NOT vegetarian, so order the black beans instead if you don't want pork in your meal. The service from the server was very good initially, but as they got busier for lunch and we were winding down our meal, our server was less and less visible to us, and we needed to call upon the busser for our check. Once we received our check, the payment was processed quickly and efficiently.
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
Mixed experiences. Ceviche mixto is very good. Enchilada not so good. Chips and salsa are excellent. Black beans are terrific. Service is very spotty. One night, three of us were dining together, meals were brought out for two of us, nothing for the third person. We waited thinking his order would be forthcoming- nothing. Flagged someone down, she said she'd check, never saw her again. Flagged down bartender (we were dining at table in bar area), he said he'd check. About 10 minutes later - it's been now about 25 minutes since the two diners were served, he returns to say that the kitchen had boxed it up as a to go order and they are now putting it out on a plate for him. That is crazy - how did one order for three diners come out as one item to go? And then after 25 minutes, don't you think you should remake the order?
google avatar

Phi N.

Yelp
So since the last time I've been here, I've tried a couple more items on the menu. Plus, they've opened a new section to the restaurant. Now they have dancing on weekends and I think karaoke once a week. The places a huge, has lots of parking, and is well decorated. The service is also super friendly. New items that I have ordered include the bistec cubano, bistec a la criolla, stuffed shrimp with crabmeat, zarzuela andaluza, and a side of platanos maduros. The bistec cubano is nice and tender, has a delicious bitter marinade to it, and comes with platanos. The bistec criolla comes with a salad, lots of peppers and onions on top of the steak and an excellent flavor. The stuffed shrimp was good, but not amazing. They were large shrimp with lots of crabmeat but the sauce didn't blow me away. I only tried a little of the zarzuela andaluza, but I thought the sauce was really tasty. The platanos are a must everytime I come here now, along with ceviche and papusas... the main orders have to be switched up because it's too much food if I get it all, haha.
