"This bright, buzzy restaurant is just a cast away from the waterfront and has a semi-industrial fish-market look. Choose your seafood from the fridge or the tank, along with a cooking style, a sauce and one of their interesting sides." - Michelin Inspector

Modern fish restaurant (they have also a few meat dishes). I liked the concept of choosing your fresh fish at a counter that would then be served grilled. Pick the sides and the sauce and done is your main course. Very friendly service. Would definitely go again. Desserts were large and very good also by the way.

The interior design looks like a storage hall, the lights look like in a cellar but once you get your food, you immediately get taken to one of the best seafood restaurants! Restaurang B.A.R. has an amazing, broad selection of seafood of all kinds, accompanied by a huge variety of delicious side dishes. Additionally, the staff is super friendly and welcoming and the ambience is very comfortable. Our server was Lina, who was very friendly and gave us advice on our food. Certain tables are located right next to a lobster tank where you can watch the lobsters fighting and the other seafoods are openly placed on ice, showing how freshly the food is prepared. The only problem is that the name bar makes it hard to find the restaurant at times, but once you are here, it’s worth it.

The fresh seafood from the platter was excellent. But the mixed grill was good but not great, imho. A bit tight in terms of table when you have a platter and muxed grill. Plus, you can hear everything on both sides of the table. We"ll go back for the fresh fish.

Google
The food was amazing, really fresh and you can pick your fish or meat. The sides are very tasty as well.

We opted for B.A.R after it was recommended to us. It’s also on the Michelin recommended guide. It certainly lived up to our expectations with the food. We started with 4 small plates, which were all tasty and bursting with flavour. As we still have room, we went for mains If you opt for the fish, you get to had over to the fish counter and select the piece you want, awesome idea The place is massive, has a lovely vibe and makes for a pleasant dining experience. Now the negative. I agree with some of the comments, the service is really lacking and slow The staff seem inexperience, overwhelmed and simply confused/lost. We had to grab their attention on too many occasion and they even missed our coffees at the end. If they nail the waiting staff issues, this place could earn its star very soon

(Sept2024) Fantastic night, great food and atmosphere. My favorite thing tonight was the crunchy (spicy) shrimp! Always a treat to come back! (Feb2025)

Yelp
My wife and i went ti BAR on Saturday night, as it was just around the corner from the Radisson where we were staying. The restaurant was packed at 7:30 pm as one would expect. The have all the fish and meats lined up do you can select your meal. We decided to go with the shellfish platter that had oysters, shrimp, smoked shrimp, crab and lobster. Most other table were also getting the platters. We liked the platter but it was lots of work. Having recently vacationed in Maine, we were spoiled. None of the food was up to the level of maine. What was fun at the restaurant was sitting in close proximity to so many other people selecting and ordering their food. It was great international chatter. In summary, the restaurant is a ton of fun on a Saturday night but slightly lacks in quality. It also costs a bit with a few drinks, food and dessert coming in around $120+ us. If i had to do it again, i would probably look at a fish dish instead of the shell fish. Go and check it out.

Yelp
We had dinner here on a Monday. Despite this, it took a long time to place our order and get our food. Additionally, our waiter forgot the raw oyster we had ordered and arrived with them when we had finished our entrees. We would have ordered a second bottle of wine if our waiter had checked in with us. We were there for a total of 2 1/2 hours. Apart from the long waiting around and disorganized wait staff, the food was good. The concept was that you go to the counter to pick out your raw meat or fish, come back to the table and then wait some more for your server to come take your order... I had grilled salmon with dill pesto and my husband had "Ling" (a white meat fish) with a horseradish sauce. We enjoyed a Gruner Veltliner with all this which, at 490 SEK, was one of the more reasonably priced options.

Yelp
Fish and seafood are front and center at this restaurant, and it's delicious. The way it works is you walk up to the fish counter to pick your fish, and then they cook it for you. You can also choose to add sauces or sides. My boyfriend got the sea bream and loved it. I tried a little, and it was buttery smooth, and well seasoned with nothing but salt. I got the seafood platter, which he helped me with, and it was delicious! The smoked shrimp were bursting with roe, and the crab was so fresh tasting and full of meat. Loved the meal here.

Yelp
It's not often that I try new places in Stockholm, mainly because when I'm home I'm not on vacation. But this time - for once - I was here in full-blown vacation mode! Which in my world mean new restaurants, museum visits and lots of time to "Fika". My friend suggested that we'd go and have dinner at this relatively new restaurant in the city. He hadn't been there either so it was a first for all of us. First tip. Make a reservation. This place was crowded when we got there and it stayed that way for the time we were there. We were lucky enough to be seated right away - this despite being almost an hour early - but the bar looks cozy enough to hang in while waiting for your table. The reservations is for two hours but it's plenty of time to eat, drink and be social. Once seated our waitress greeted us and explained the menu to us. We ordered some drinks and started browsing the menu. If I could have had one of each item I would, but I settled for shrimps as starters, so did my friend and my husband took a starter with a couple of different things (like herring, shrimp...). Once we had ordered our starters we ordered our main course. When ordering from the grill you actually get to walk up to a counter and pick the fish you want. They also have some meat and other seafood up there. There is also a tank with lobsters - if you're in that mood. We all picked our choice of fish and sat down and ordered the sides (2 siders and 1 sauce). The starters came in and oh boy, plenty of shrimps to go around. My husband was very happy with his starter and me and my friend very happy with ours. I couldn't finish all the shrimps so R finished them for me. When we were almost done with our starters the waitress came over and asked if the chef should start grilling our fish, an indication that the food would be hot, and that it would not have been standing under a heating lamp (?) for a while. We got our fish and our sides and sauce and then ... silence. The food was SO good that we all just got quiet and enjoyed this perfectly grilled fish, the awesome tasting sides and the sauces. I had ahi (tuna) and it was perfectly cooked. It melted in my mouth! My husband had a Swedish fish and he loved it, and my friend had salmon and said it was perfect. Everything was perfect - even the wine that we had ordered to the food! Despite being more than full we decided to get dessert, and .. just like the food .. it was more than perfect. I'm happy that we decided to try this place and that despite reading some negative reviews we decided to go. If you're in Stockholm make sure to make reservation and check this place out .. I definitely think it's worth it.

Yelp
Visited this sport one evening late while looking for a decent dinner and some fresh fish. After sitting at the bar the restaurant was full, but not too busy. I did notice the place had some issues running smoothly. Much of the staff was unhappy especially the bartender who was serving me. I saw him get extremely angry several times through my meal. Upon sitting down I waited a long time to be acknowledged, eventually getting my drink. I looked at the fresh fish case, excellent selection and great prices. I opted for some salmon with the chef's choice on the side for sauce and a side of salad. the food was well done and cooked properly. My poor service and rude service continued from the bartender, so I'm removing 2 stars due to not only poor, but rude service. The food here is a solid 4!

Yelp
First night in Sthlm. Try out this sea food restaurant directed by the award-winning and gastronomic visionairs Henrik Norström, Peter Johansson and Daniel Frick. We ordered The Plateau Prestige and grilled fish. More than enough for two persons! The Plateau Prestige * Everything were so fresh especially the small shrimps and the crab. Grilled Fish * The waitress recommended the Kummelfilé (Hake). It was similar to Cod but less oily. They also have a wide range of drinks available.

Yelp
I went to B.A.R. last night, a public holiday, which judging from other comments and Sweetie's experience was brilliant: it was almost empty. So we were able to have a conversation, sit immediately, get our food quickly, and not be too concerned with the service (which was friendly, but a little too off-hand for such a place ("you can pour yourself your wine." Really?). That said, while the menu was fairly interesting, and the food cooked mostly pretty well (my cod was perfect, broccoli side overcooked), the presentation was lacking given the cost (see cod pic), and I just have a real problem paying extra for sides when you're paying SEK 190 ($27) for a piece of fish? It was fine, but there are better fish restaurants that offer far more value in Stockholm.

Yelp
We can here for dinner and while our reservation was for 7:15 we didn't get seated until 7:45. However despite the little late seating we had an amazing meal. We ordered the shellfish and fish grill plate for two which came with scallops, lobster, prawns, and 3 types of fish, arctic char, flounder, and some other I can't remember. It came with 2 side dishes and 3 sauces. We ordered the chimichurri and pesto along with the green asparagus, risotto, and artichoke sides. First off I can not get pst the bread and how good it was start off. I could have eaten the whole loaf. The plate was so much food and everything was fresh and grilled to perfection. The attic chat was light and flakey. Scallops were not overlooked and so tender. One of the 3 fish I can't remember was too salty for my taste but my husband loved it. I would definitely recommend coming for a great fish meal and apparently they also serve meat which we did not order any.

Yelp
A real treat for those who enjoy to dine from the depths of the sea. B.A.R. offers one of the largest selections of fresh fish (as a dine-in restaurant) I know of in the Stockholm area. Selecting a fish, sauce and side can be a tough choice with so many fantastic options, but B.A.R.'s concept intertwines fine dining with the authenticity of your local fish market. You can chat with the cooks, get recommendations, and visualize your meal with those who will execute the cooking. This kind of intimacy makes for an unique dining experience. I know I've talked up the fish, but if you're a mussels lover, you can receive some of the best Moules Frites in the city here! Unfortunately, deliciousness comes at a price. In my opinion, some of the dishes are overpriced, while others are very reasonable. Chow down!

Yelp
For our visit, we had a table reserved for eight people at 12:30. When we arrived, we found the place quite full with people queuing all the way through the entrance and no steward within reach. However, we were soon received and asked to wait, which was ok because we were five minutes early. At 12:50, we had yet to be seated. The stewardess approached us and asked us to stand by our table-to-be in order to "signal" to the other party that it was time to leave. We found this very odd. Another 15 minutes passed before we had a chance to order. Then we waited another quarter for the food. Hungry and impatient, we all dived into our dishes when they arrived. Five of us had ordered the daily special, which this day was a slice of roast beef with potatoes and bearnaise. Strangely, the serving sizes were noticeably different across the table. For myself, I had opted for the steak tartare (1/1 185 SEK) with a side salad (35 SEK). The serving size was alright, and the sides were capris, chopped onions, two yolks and beetroot (very vinegary). Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with my choice. While the meat was fresh and tasty, the presentation was mediocre. The ground meat had just been heaved up on the plate with no finesse whatsoever. It looked like ground beef from the local supermarket, intended for meatballs and the like. In addidion, the meat was fridge-cold. That's a sin in the steak tartare world. It should be served at room temperature (obviously, it's not a summer season dish). In all, the visit was a big dissapointment, it had seemed so promising I really wanted to like it! The food was just a little dissapointing though, on the biggest part was the execution of the service and the overall presentation of the food. Cannot recommend.

Yelp
Had a business lunch here two days ago and it was a pleasant experience, both the food and the place. I like the open kitchen idea, and we were actually sitting right in front of the fish counter (where you can buy fresh fish to bring home). It was pretty crowded, intense talking and noise from the kitchen all the time. Still we could easily have our lunch conversation. The B.A.R. Sandwich I had was excellent with fried fish, salmon and a white fish of some kind. All on a bed of seafood mix, salad and a thin bread crust that worked well with the fish. The service was good but one waiter was a bit absent-minded and you got this unpleasant feeling that there are other guests that seems more important than you. However there were others that did their job well. Overall a positive experience and I'll come back here again!

Yelp
Swung through for a quick glass of akvavit on a trip without much drinking. The maitre d' checked the full tables behind him as I entered, and looked visibly relieved when I said I was just here for a few minutes at the bar. The akvavit selection was a Skåne, an O.P. Anderson, and two Aalborgs; I was in the mood for carraway, so went with the O.P. Anderson. Prices are listed per 1cl, but this pour was 4cl; SEK 22 on the menu, but SEK 88 on the bill. Reasonable prices, just caused a double-take because of the difference. Yes, there's lobster tanks, although I'm not sure I'd consider this an "akvarium." Clientele was stylish but casual --- didn't notice either logo T-shirts or sport jackets. I'll try the food next time, but I'll make sure to get a reservation.

Yelp
B.A.R. is well located, near the waterfront, the Grand Hotel and National museum. It has a cool casual vibe, and is patronized mostly by Swedes (a good sign). It offers plenty of seafood options on the menu, and you can also pick a piece of meat or fish that you point in their refrigerated display to the cook, and they will grill it for you (you also pick sides and sauce to go with it). Service was good, wine excellent, bread OK. Our appetizers were a success. My Swedish roe with buckwheat pancake and sour cream was a nice dish. Too bad the "pancake" was so tiny. My wife's salmon (mostly) and scallop (very little) tartar was topped with an Asian salad. It was tasty and refreshing. Then we went for the grilled fish made to order. Both fish were well cooked, and we tried 3 sides we liked: French fries (excellent), green beans with an onion vinaigrette (pretty good), risotto (OK). Clearly the desserts are just an after-thought here: just fruits and ice-cream in various combinations. The red berry sabayon and almond ice-cream was a little disappointing: the sabayon was really too sweet. But the ice-cream was quite good. So it's probably safer to stick to ice-cream if you really want to end with something sweet here. Overall, a solid restaurant. I would happily come back. To top it off, 15 minutes after we arrived, Mos Def walked in and had dinner a few tables from us. Clearly, the locals were unfazed. We were the only ones excited... Last tip: it got really busy real quick after 6pm. Looks like you either have to arrive very early or book in advance.

Yelp
The place is modern and filled with a mixture of young people and persons just coming from a business meeting. We ordered mussels soup and the mixed fish grill for two. The soup was excellent filled with shrimps and a few mussels. The mixed fish grill was ok but some parts of the fish were on the grill plate too long so that it tasted bitter. After the main course it took so long before they came to order a dessert that I just skipped it. The service is very poor apparently they are just students that work in the evening here. They have no idea how to present wine and they pay no attention to you. I would not come here again. Very expensive for what you get.

Yelp
Was in Stockholm for a few days last month, wanting some good seafood, and heard B.A.R. was the place to go to. Indeed it was. Probably the best oysters I've ever had. Just myself and a couple of friends went the first night, and we raved about it so much, that we came back with the rest of our group the following night. The local ale they serve is quite delicious as well, and goes well with the fresh fish they serve up.
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
Quite crowded and noisy place. But still one of my favorite spots in Stockholm. The atmosphere, the prices and the choice of fresh seafood and meat beats most other places in town! Really nice how they have made the place look like an old style food market with white tiles on the walls, light wooden furniture and a huge seafood and meat disk where you can order of today's catch. You can combine your choice with several side dishes, all which are really nice. A place like this is always really expensive in Stockholm. But B.A.R. has kept the high quality with very reasonable prices. I have been here many times, and every time I left the place really happy of my choice.
google avatar

Sam E.

Yelp
Awesome fresh oysters, especially the meaty royales. The bill shot up higher than average because we kept ordering and it was worth it. Even the simple fish and chips for my daughter were very tasty. Everything melted in your mouth. Will definitely try to go back before we leave.

Yelp
Apparently recently opened and already very popular - so much so that a reservation is good for two hours - in at 6:00, out by 8:00. And that's pretty much the time you need. The restaurant is rather sparsely decorated, but features a "market" section where you go to pick out the fish or meat you want to eat. There is a routine, that the servers explain at the outset. First, think that you're eating with the family and don't expect anyone to pour your wine for you. Second, pick your meat or fish at the "market" and then return to your table. Third, select a starter (hot or cold), two side dishes and one sauce for your meat or fish. While your meal is being prepared, enjoy an ample quantity of flatbread (today with fennel seed) or crusty bread. The quality of the ingredients is excellent. All meat and fish is simply grilled and served with your side orders and sauce. As such, the overall taste of your main course depends a bit on whether you selected an appropriate sauce. I had the red pepper sauce, which was mild and didn't really contribute to the overall taste. My wife and our friend both had the ratatouille, which was tasty but didn't seem to enhance the fish. Perhaps we should have asked the chef for recommended sauces. In all cases, however, the fish was grilled to perfection. Back to the "market", it is an interesting experience. The chef knows his ingredients and is able to advise on the characteristics of each and make recommendations based on our expressed preferences. Somehow the piece of fish that arrives cooked looks bigger on the plate than it did in the display counter. For starters we had pickled herring, buttered white asparagus and a shrimp salad and declared all three to be excellent. We passed on dessert but I finished with a good espresso. Dinner for three with a fine bottle of Sancerre was 1800 SEK.
google avatar

Traci F.

Yelp
Excellent Halibut fish. When you order, you go to the chef and select which piece of meat or fish you wish to purchase. The waiter then walks you through what side dishes (which are priced separately) to order. The place was very busy, so the service was a little slow which is why we are only assigning four stars. I would certainly eat there again!
google avatar

Peter B.

Yelp
How many restaurants--in the world--appreciate that when you are serving fresh caught fish...you don't have to cook it?!? B.A.R. will grill the fish of your choice to perfection. Just long enough to warm it up and put some grill marks on the filet. Let the fresh flavor of the fresh catch do it's magic. I stop here on every trip to Stockholm for a reason...they get it here.
google avatar

Mimi N.

Yelp
Not a very pleasant dinner. There were no tables available for an hour and a half, so we opted for sitting at the bar, which was a mistake. We were not attended by a waiter more than once or twice at most, the entire time we were there. Once just to give us the menus, and another time to pay the bill. Due to the poor service, we ordered all our food through the bartenders, who didn't seem pleased with the situation at all, as they were busy making drinks, as they should be. It was extremely loud and crowded, and also quite dark. We tried to move to a table, but were not able to. The food came out extremely slowly, but was very fresh and pretty good, though a bit pricey. Would recommend the fish tacos! The lady who helped us choose the fish from the tanks was very kind and helpful, while everyone else was... Not so much. Wouldn't come back!

Greg H.

Yelp
A belated review for this lovey spot in Stockholm. Nice modern, clean ambiance. You get to choose your fish and have it cooked up however you like. We had monkfish cheeks grilled, and they were amazing. Highly recommended if they have them. Service was good. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the mood for some fresh seafood!

Yelp
Awsome seafood, great grilled fish, cozy and hipster at the same time! Good wines! Great friendly staff! Gayfriendly indeed!

Yelp
Fantastic food and great straff. You can pick your lobster from the aquarium. Book table in advance.

Yelp
Recommended by friends in Stockholm, ate here before cycling trip in Sweden. A simple concept, but well done. the wait staff is fun, friendly and knowledgeable. You start of by going to the fish counter, where the fish guy explains the different types of fish. You pick your raw fish, and they simply salt, pepper and grill. You have your choice of maybe 15 sauces and sides, and you pick with some help from the staff. great meal for everyone. Would go back there anytime

Ron L.

Yelp
Visiting your wonderful city for the first time and B.A.R. was recommended for great sea food, which was wonderful, but the service really stinks! Party of 7 and we had a new waitress who started that day, it took almost 20 minutes before she came and greeted us, service was slow and jerky. Would not go back. Sorry.

Yelp
Superb seafood, great wines, excellent service. Beautifully laid out space with lots of natural light. Great Swedish dining experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good restaurant that is somewhat reasonable (for Stockholm). This place is trendy and fun. We stayed with the small plates, ordering four for two people. We wish we could have tried more. Good wine, beer, and cocktail choices.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't generally write reviews of restaurants and I'm a bit fussy about food but this place has become my favourite restaurant in Stockholm. It's very unpretentious in a very Swedish way but the quality of everything is top class. It's not a fine dining type of experience and it's not trying to be, But if you like fish, without any faffing, you should go....soon.
google avatar

Jannik H.

Yelp
Nice seafood restaurant. The music was slightly too loud, but the food was good and the waiter attentive.

Yelp
This place can certainly get packed, but the fresh fish is amazing, and the avocado and grapefruit salad is to die for. After eating here for a business meeting, I went back the next night for seconds!

Abby Z.

Yelp
This was one of the best fish restaurants I have eaten at. I'm from Boston and picky about eating fish. Nice cool atmosphere, well priced considering the excellent quality. I would definitely book a reservation if you are visiting Stockholm.

Joe C.

Yelp
Have dined here twice both times fantastic. Great atmosphere, grilled fresh fish was awesome ( got the wolffish) a large carte sides were delicious got the fries (some of the best I've ever had) and broccoli. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I ventured over to BAR with a group of coworkers on a work trip to Stockholm in Feb 2015. I have to say that I loved the atmosphere of this place! Like others have said, very modern with a hipster feel to it (rustic, metal & wood, etc). The menu is a little confusing, but basically you physically walk over to the counter where you choose your fish to be grilled, then select your sides. The food was OK to me, but then again I think I ordered wrong... I went the route of the seafood pasta rather than fish, and it was just mediocre at best. However the others I were with loved their meals, and one of our friends from the UK said he liked their fish & chips better than from home. The wine list was also great, no complaints there. Overall this is a great restaurant for those looking for a cozy environment to soak up some good conversation. (Also, keep a look-out for the waiter that looks EXACTLY like Johnny Depp... no joke.) Would go back, but order differently next time!

Per M.

Yelp
Celebrated my birthday together with my family. Afterwards half of us got really sick within 24h, when calling the restaurant about this they really couldn't care less. They hardly apologized and offered no compensation whatsoever. I will never ever come back.

Irene B.

Yelp
We had a reservation and were seated promptly. After sitting for about 10 minutes we decided to proceed according to the reviews we read and went up to the counter and picked a fish. There was no English translation of the signs and a man behind the counter was willing to name them more rapidly than we could integrate. However, we did hear "arctic char" so my husband and I picked one to share. He told us to sit down and our server would take the rest of the order. Again a somewhat long wait, and we ordered our sides. We didn't know how they would find us but they did and the fish was the best I have ever tasted. Despite the initial confusion and noise and "rough and ready" atmosphere I would go back for the food. We life near the shore of the Atlantic Ocean and each fresh fish at least 4 times a week....yet I have never had an arctic char that was so juicy, moist and delicious.

Rachel L.

Yelp
Five star food -- Starting with the bread and cocktails. The local Swedish ale was delicious. And everything on the grilled seafood platter for two was perfectly cooked and at peak freshness, and the grilled broccoli and asparagus salad (especially the dressing) were simple but flavorful sides. The desserts featured Scandinavian favors and were delicious. We had the rhubarb compote with cardamom ice cream and roasted white chocolate, vanilla ice cream, and the pistachio/roasted nut cream with the raspberry sorbet. But the service, sigh. We had to pester and remind for everything -- water, butter, an extra plate for our three year old, clearing dishes, getting a dessert menu. No needs were anticipated, just the bare minimum met. Too bad since the food and venue -- cool and slightly edgy, clean and modern but still comfortable table spacing -- and the pricing, were nearly perfect. No decaf coffee though. Kinda strange with such an extensive and great evening dessert menu. I'd go again though and would just be ready to hound the wait staff.
