Baan Suan Mae Rim

"Although this restaurant is outside the city centre, it’s worth the drive for its Thai cuisine, and especially its northern dishes, served in a beautiful, natural setting. Open for more than a decade, the place consists of several northern Thai-style pavilions, which all face a pond – and you can also dine in the open air. Either way, there are tranquil views of the trees, pond, and rice fields. Deep-fried snakehead fish with hot and spicy sauce is recommended." - Michelin Inspector

This was our first meal in Chiang Mai and we drove about 45 minutes from the international airport. There are dining facilities inside but we chose to sit outside as the evening was cool. Service was friendly but a little slow as the place was around half full. They have a plaque showing they received Michelin recognition in 2020, and the food was mostly nice and tasty. We enjoyed the fried glass noodles so much that we re-ordered the dish. The omelette and the small shrimp dish were also nice, as was the starter plate featuring pork crackling and the delicious local issan sausages. The larb, which came with a hugh plate of vegetables and which included innards, was more of an acquired taste. Prices were reasonable and you also get to enjoy sitting surrounded by ponds.

Our hotel manager recommended this restaurant. We love their tomyum gung!! This Muchelin guide restaurant lived to its name. Given that we could only order seafood n vegetarian dishes, we opted for the fried tilapia with garlic, omelette, morning glory n kale. Definitely worth going again! And we went on the second time ...very happy with our dinner!

The menu photos doesn’t look attractive at all but the foods turns out to be quite decent other than the sweet and sour fish which was really so so……..service wise is really a “basic services” restaurant………..it is a really fair priced restaurant which is good resting place if you are nearby…….

Best fried rice and Tom kra soup in Thailand and the whole wide world 🌎 😋 Fresh & local food, keeps being recommended by the Michelin restaurants guide every year! Worth the trip from the city, make it a day's excursion as there're so much to see and do in Maerim.

I love all their dishes but my favorite was the glass noodles and the snail curry. I highly recommend the indoor seating area as the flies in the outdoor area were really annoying and affected our dining experience. The indoor area was full when we arrived so it's better to make reservations first.

One of the better Michelin restaurants I’ve been in chiang mai. It’s a bit far from the city and the food presentation is not as nice, but I like the taste. It’s worth a visit. Their pan fried dishes have the “wok hey” taste. They have good cooking equipment at a high temperature that is hard to make this taste at home. Not all the restaurants can do that.

Baan Suan is a popular Thai food restaurant in Mae Rim. A lot of company groups and large families eat here, and it can handle a crowd. Parking is ample, seating is spread over several levels, and the kitchen is large. The dishes are all the Thai standards, focusing on fish. I especially enjoy their Fried Fish with Chili Sauce, but the non-seafood dishes are also good, especially their Paad Krapow Moo. Service is good, and the prices are reasonable, so it’s a good family spot. Most of the seating is outdoors, but there is a small enclosed and air-conditioned space if required. But given the usual evening Chiang Mai weather, this is usually unnecessary. Just make sure to bring along the bug spray!
