Baan Thai Review - Northern Liberties - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Baan Thai is a small BYOB that’s a good place to come for a casual weeknight dinner with a few friends, when you can eat things like pad see ew and duck panang in a curry coconut sauce. In the summer they have a ton of outdoor seating on the patio, so it’s worth blocking off an entire Friday night to hog one of their tables under the string lights until you’ve finished all the wine you brought." - Sydney McElwee

It seems like any other Thai restaurant in North Carolina when you walk in. But the food is definitely some of the best Thai food I've ever had. The Beef rice noodle dish was superb! The flavor was deep and the beef was slow cooked in a crockpot. It came out so fast! I love delicious food that arrives fast and tastes incredible. This is the Thai restaurant to try in Apex!

Google
It was our first time trying on this place. Both of my son love Thai chicken fried rice. The food was awesome. Staff were very friendly. They even have these cute plates for kids to eat. I always struggle when they give me a ceramic plate to offer food in restaurants but this one is prepared.

We dined here on a Sunday evening, walked in at 8PM and the restaurant was empty, they were just working on some take outs I believe. The food showed up quickly, however, the staff were in such a rush to close up and get us out. We were pressured to finish up, plates were being cleared as we were still eating, including the fork that I still needed, check given before we finished eating… all in all a bad experience. I wouldn’t go back though I wanna spend locally and in small restaurants.

Google
This place has amazing Thai Cuisine! Must come and sit down and have some beer or wine with your meal! Being served here is better than taking out! Get to feel the experience of sitting at a table at Thailand having a meal your Auntie or Mommy cooks for you! Must come see!

I wish there was a half star to give. Had ordered a combo food which was pad thai and chicken soup. My husband ordered red curry with spring roll combo. Since v r vegetarians, I asked if I could take out chicken soup and replace it with veg spring roll. They said they can't do it. I was okay with that and just asked them to get paid Thai. It was the worst pad thai I have ever tasted. It was with red sauce and there were hardly any veggies or tofu inside it. It smelled terribly bad. I asked the staff if they could switch it to red curry cuz I didn't like it. She was so damn rude. She said they make what they make and can't change it on the likes of customer. I have never seen such an arrogant staff. I had ordered unsweetened ice tea and my husband ordered sweetened tea. I didn't find any difference between the two drinks in terms of sweetness

Google
While this spot seems nice and the staff are attentive, the food was not the best even among the few Thai options in the area. The pad Thai was a strange pink color and the taste was not at all authentic - it was overly sweet and I suspect they mixed some of the red pre made chili sauce into the pad Thai vs using authentic ingredients. The Bangkok fried rice was slightly better but nothing special plus clearly used frozen vegetables. Both were absolutely not worth the price tag ($20 per entree) and were something you could get for $10 at a local Chinese restaurant. Mango sticky rice was fine but again very mediocre. Ambiance was also dark and small. They played a repeated instrumental track over and over.

Mia N

Google
Restaurant with my favorite duck and beef salad. But the duck was too salty, had to eat two bowls of rice. Mango sticky rice was a bit sweet, sweet sticky rice, sweet coconut milk and sweet mango 🥲. I wish the restaurant would adjust the taste to be lighter. The staff is quite attentive to customers, there are many choices for Thai dishes, edible

Google
Love Baan Thai. The tom yum super spicy chicken soup is amazing. It's our go to. Even with take out, they are extremely generous. Atmosphere is classic authentic Thai too. Great place!!

Yelp
Food was excellent, I really enjoyed the Thai Tea as well. Service is prompt, and you can tell it's a mom and pop type of business. We didn't even realize they had closed, but they continued to serve us during their break. We only realized after we left. Truly professional service, and a nice quiet environment to catch up with a friend. P.S. Try steamed dumplings and the Pad Thai. It's difficult to make them right.

Yelp
Only giving one star because the waiter was nice This was possibly the WORST Thai food I've ever tasted... my grandmother was Thai and I've been to 10 plus Thai restaurants in my life. Thought the 4 star reviews would mean this place was good but it's not I'm sorry but I must let others know We couldn't even finish our food we just packed it up and left... Here's a photo of my brothers greasy Bangkok chicken for reference..

Yelp
I've learned to love spice more because of this place, it has been a gradual climb. Tonight I ordered 2X HOT and it was perfect. Burned my lips just enough. Drunken noodles are an excellent comfort food and three little spring rolls to an order - I was in Thai flavor heaven. Service is always kind and the restaurant is clean. Maybe I should dine in... eventually. Regardless, every time, a different dish. Enjoy.

Shakirah ..

Yelp
When I walked in the restaurant was empty.. yet I was sat in the corner behind the door.. and when other (white people) parties came in they were sat in the open part of the restaurant... it felt extremely racist to me.. Also you get more food when you takeout
google avatar

Yelp
Certainly a most simple humble and authentic Thai food .. it feels like you are eating in your dining room Food we eat here and keep coming back for it Basil Chicken Tofu Penang Curry Chicken Satay Chicken friend rice When my son comes home we go here to eat .. he craves for it while being it college .. Baan Thai brings him home :)

Yelp
We ordered takeout today. Pad Thai noodles today was disappointing. It was more on the sweet side so that's all we could taste. Thai basil fried rice was good. The red curry was also alright. However none of the dishes hit the spot. Still looking for my favorite Thai place!
google avatar

Talaya V.

Yelp
Wow wow wow! The food is amazing! I love the Khao Soy Chicken (creamy coconut curry soup) and the drunken noodles is sooooooo good! Friendly staff and the food is always HOT! I have no idea how they are able to cook and deliver the food in like 20 minutes to my house, but when I open the container the steam comes rushing out!!! You will not be disappointed

Yelp
Possibly the BEST THAI in the area! This place never showed up in Yelp or Google when I looked for nearby restaurants but I noticed it driving by. I didn't think to take photos but we'll definitely be back! The portions are huge and I'm not s dessert person but had to try the coconut cake and it was equally impressive- very moist and a great, natural coconut flavor without being too sweet.

Yelp
Weird "'Thai" food. I can't speak to authenticity never having been to Thailand, but there were no notes of fish sauce, lime leaves, lemongrass, or depth of any ingredient like palm sugar in any of the dishes. Instead there were strangely muted flavors in dishes that are typically popping! Best to save your money. The quality of the food is reminiscent of when I wanted to make soup when I was five years of age and mixed spaghetti, chewable vitamin C tablets, and other potpurri items into a cup and microwaved it. Words can only fail to express how disappointed my wife and I by our order of panang curry, pad thai, and pad prik.

Yelp
On a whim decided to try take out just for myself based on decent reviews. Ordered the spring rolls which were good. For the main dish I ordered the peanut lovers stir fry. What a disgusting, watery mess for almost $20. Almost all of it went in the trash. It was a super sweet, watery peanut sauce with gobs of cabbage and a few broccoli and carrots thrown in. I tried a few bites with rice and it was inedible. Will definitely not be giving it another try.

Yelp
We have had take out here several times and it's always fresh and delicious! It's our go to Thai place to order from. If in the mood for Thai I would definitely recommend them.
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Very baan-tastic! They have the best panang curry. The star crabs and panang curry are the only two things that I order now (I've tried other menu items and they were good too but I just love this curry). Baan Thai is one of my favorite Thai spots in the area.

Yelp
I've had this place bookmarked for a while and was finally able to stop in for lunch. I walked in and thought it was takeout only as everything was blocked off but they had a couple of tables available for dine-in. She saw me with my baby and immediately let me know they don't have high chairs (I didn't ask or need one). Then within 30 seconds of sitting down, she asked me what I wanted. I asked for a couple of minutes to look at the menu and for my friend to arrive. Friend arrives, she immediately follows after her asking what she wants as soon as she sits down without offering a menu or anything. I place my drink order, and she asks again if we're ready. I place mine and hand my friend the menu to look, and again less than a min later she tells us "do you want the food to come out together? you need to place order". Thankfully the food was amazing and up there for one of the best pad thai's I've ever had. It was so so flavorful. Customer service is really crappy but the food is great.

Bhargav P.

Yelp
Beware of FAKE reviews. I used to laugh at low ratings but it hurts so bad when you find it for yourself. Pls save your money. Worst Pad Thai I my life, went because of the reviews, little I know they were PAID reviews. Will never go again.

Erica D.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service, and authentic ambiance. My favorite place for curry! They always seem to have to go orders running too.

Cari G.

Yelp
Baan Thai is consistently delicious, service is always welcoming and friendly. Kelly (the chef) makes authentic Thai food. They have good wines, beer and sake. I don't know why more people aren't dining here. It's better than most restaurants in Apex (in our opinion). If you haven't dined here yet, give them a try! You won't be disappointed.

Marcel T.

Yelp
I don't understand the negative reviews We have been there for dinner not take out a few times The food and service are very good The wine is good and reasonably priced Small place but they maximize the space usage Nice and relaxing ambiance I would definitely recommend it
google avatar

Yelp
This place is so good! One of my mom's coworkers recommended it, so we decided to get an order delivered for dinner tonight. The delivery was super prompt, and they had an option for no contact, so it felt very safe. I got the drunken noodles with tofu and no eggs, and my food was absolutely amazing. My mom got the red curry with tofu, and she loved it. I absolutely recommend this place and will be sure to order from here again!
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
This place is not authentic at all. The drunken noodles have no flavor. They just taste like noodles soaked in soy sauce. The Tom yum soup was the biggest disappointment. Lacked flavor and was very bland. I couldn't taste lemongrass at all. I'm sorry to say that I won't be returning here for a Thai meal
google avatar

Yelp
Always fresh and delicious. Great local Thai option. The papaya salad is outstanding.

Yelp
Been to Baan Thai many many times over the past three or four years. My partner and I love the food here, and have had positive experiences with dining in and takeout. My two favorite orders are the Massaman curry with chicken and the pineapple fried rice. My partner is vegetarian and rotates through the menu and has yet to find a dish we both don't like. If you are nervous about spiciness, the mild truly is quite mild. And if you like it spicy they definitely do that too. Staff has always been attentive and friendly. Highly recommend you stop by.

Ayesha A.

Yelp
Delicious! Service was quick, staff was nice and probably the best shrimp pad Thai I've had.
google avatar

Jen A.

Yelp
This place has turned into a weekly go-to for us. We absolutely love the drunken noodles with tofu, and we pair it with the pineapple fried rice. The dishes are so flavorful, and the portion sizes are perfect. We typically start with the star crabs, which are just your usual crab Rangoon. Deliciously crispy, and the dipping sauce is so good! Knocking off one star because of their online ordering system. It's easy to use, but the restaurant doesn't actually set the time that your order will be ready. We ordered on a Saturday night, and the website said 15-30 mins. We got there after 20, and ended up waiting an additional 30 because they were slammed. I'd recommend calling to get an accurate timeframe.

Yelp
Let me talk about how I love this place, again? It's just such a pleasure during covid to order quick and then pick up in such a safe environment. Masks are required - it says clearly on the door - then when you enter they have adjusted to layout to allow tons of room between you and the staff when you are checking out and picking up your order. What a relief, you know? I literally don't see anyone or go many places (as in the grocery store is a huge deal for me - so I mostly order) and this makes me feel safe. A total pleasure. The green curry with tofu is my fav - one thing - brown rice would be awesome but since they only have white I use my own at home. Cheers! Thanks for the amazing food, team.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Friendly staff, fresh food. Lots of flavor and lots of variety. Never disappointed. Chicken larb and massaman curry are some of my favorite dishes. Duck is good here too. If you love spicy they aim to please, but almost everything can be made not spicy. Coconut soup is yum. I eat here about once a month, when I'm in Apex, and am never disappointed.
google avatar

Jbear F.

Yelp
Great food and efficient service. Friendly too. The take out order was ready right when they said it would be. The Chicken Red Curry and Fried Gyoza tasted very good. The spice level we specified was right on. Would recommend and go there again.

Yelp
Awful meal How did this place get such high reviews?????? The pad z ew had a bland taste

Linda G.

Yelp
Worst Thai food I have ever had. Pineapple fried rice was supposed to have chicken, shrimp, pineapple, raisins, scallions, nuts. No shrimp, no pineapple, no raisins, and very bland. On top of that, when my husband showed up to pick up our to-go order, one of the employees thought he was from DoorDash and started yelling at him about the order - "do your job" - and would not listen to him; treating him not like a customer but a delivery person. (Was that because my husband is African American? Who knows.) Avoid this restaurant at all costs.
google avatar

Jenna C.

Yelp
Consistently the best Thai in the area. Hard to beat their red curry! Wowza! Also, crab wontons very good. Not overwhelmingly crab.

Dani W.

Yelp
I used to like this restaurant but in the last 3-6 months it has gone VERY downhill. Maybe they got new cooks, new owners or are trying to save a couple bucks per order but there is NO EXCUSE. Their green curry has zero flavor. In fact, I wonder if there is any actual curry in it? I think not, because why else would it have no flavor and have green food coloring in it? Yes- GREEN FOOD COLORING. Not even attempt to mix the green food coloring with the yellow food coloring in an attempt to make it appear a little closer to what it should be... NO- LITERALLY EMERALD GREEN. The chicken in my curry was dyed the color of an emerald. So yes, if you love chemicals and green chicken this is the place for you. The curry itself? Totally flavorless. I ordered my food at a 3 spice level (just be,ow "Thai hot" but instead I got a mildly sweet milky emerald green substance. No spice. I had a jar of green curry paste in my fridge. I mixed some if that in to help a bit... We also ordered drunken noodles- So dry, and Also supposedly a 3 spice level. No flavor. Just.... Terrible. To add insult to injury we ordered the "shrimp delight" for our daughter at $8. There were only 3 shrimp in the meal. We were so disappointed. We decided to look up other reviews of the restaurant and ran across a review by a person who suffers gluten intolerance. The person said they spoke with someone at this restaurant to confirm that the curries are gluten free; however, they are made with coconut milk, regular milk and cream. Reading this review was enough for me to toss our entire order in the trash. A total disgusting waste of almost $80. When it comes to Yelp reviews I try to live by the "if you have nothing good to say, it's best not to say anything". I love to support local restaurants but I feel offended by what I ordered there tonight so I'm just being honest with how I am feeling about this place...

Yelp
Found this Thai restaurant on Yelp and wanted to try it out because of the great reviews -- it definitely didn't disappoint! Service was very prompt and friendly and the food was great. We went during their lunch special, which is $7.95 for normal dishes and $8.95 for Chef Special dishes. Ordered the Pad Z Ew and Yellow Curry, both which were delicious and also came with a coconut soup or peanut sauce salad as part of the $7.95 lunch special. Portions were big and I was satisfied and stuffed by the end of the meal. The Pad Z Ew had thick stir-fried rice noodles with your choice of meat (I got tofu), sliced carrots, scrambled eggs, and broccoli. I thought the sauce was delicious and while the noodles were kind of sticky, I didn't mind it because of how good it was. The Yellow Curry came with your choice of meat, potatoes, onions, carrots, and rice. It was very creamy with a kick of spice to it depending on the heat level you choose. Definitely recommend these two dishes! Also quick tip: if your dish isn't spicy enough, ask the waiter for the sauce platter, which contains 4 different types of chili sauces!

Yelp
I've lived and apex for almost two years and drove by here when I would go into Harris teeter. I regret not trying this place sooner!! My husband and I ordered the Tom Yum, star Rangoon, spicy Thai basil fried rice with chicken and pad see ew. It was amazing and freshly made to order!! We will definitely come back.
google avatar

Abc D.

Yelp
We love the food here. They are open for dine in but with a very small capacity. Outdoor dining is also available.
google avatar

Yelp
My almost daily lunch place now. I was so worried whether I will be able to find good thai restaurant in North Carolina when we moved last month. Glad I found this close to our home. This is the best I have been to after Bangkok 54 in chapel hill. Excellent lunch specials, very very tasty food, well priced.
google avatar

Kristin Y.

Yelp
Best takeout in Apex! We love their pad Thai and all the curry dishes. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. Delivery is quick and easy with online ordering. You cannot go wrong with this restaurant!
google avatar

Katharine B.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic Thai food in Apex! I was excited to read the reviews by Greg Cox in the N&O and this restaurant proudly displays his article. The ambience is casual and the service was outstanding. I had a curry seafood dish and loved it. Next time I will get the dish Daniel ordered because it was also with curry and a fantastic and hearty dish of fresh flavors. The prices are on point with the location and I am glad I finally tried it out. The reviews are consisently high and now I know why. This is a great choice for Thai in the Beaver Creek and 55 area.

Emily F.

Yelp
Food was pretty overpriced for what you get. I ordered the pad Thai and drunken noodles, and both were lacking in flavor and were cold/seemed like we had just been served food that was cooked in a big batch and sitting out for a while. The pad Thai was very red in color which was odd.
google avatar

Suzanne T.

Yelp
I had dinner there for the first time and the food was delicious! The service was great. Everyones meal was cooked fresh and enjoyed by my family. I was amazed at how many take out orders were prepared. If you like Thai food I suggest you gone this local restaurant a try eating in or for take out.
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
I think this place is one of the best options to get the most authentic Thai food around Cary, Apex, Morrisville. I lived in Bangkok for 10+ years so I can confidently say I know what authentic Thai food tastes like. Food is super tasty, portions are great, and they offer a good variety on their menu! Staff is also very friendly!
google avatar

Vania W.

Yelp
I came here for lunch over the weekend, so there were no lunch specials. It was pricier than I expected, ~$15 after taxes for an entree. Unlike the weekday lunch, the normal entrees do not come with choice of soup or salad, so I ordered a soup separately. I am so glad I did because the soup ended up tasting better than my entree. I ordered the Tom Kha, a coconut-milk based soup, and it was delicious! Really great flavor and a decent amount of meat and vegetables put into the bowl. The Drunken Noodles was where things fell flat for me. This dish was way too salty. One of the reviews on here has critiqued the food for being too sweet, so I'm wondering if they added extra salt to compensate? Aside from the noodles though, the fried tofu that was added to the noodles was actually very tasty. I think this place still has potential based on the other reviews on here, so I do want to come back. I also want to try the sticky mango rice that is on their dessert menu!

Nate B.

Yelp
Pad Thai was okay not too flavorful. I ordered with seafood and didn't enjoy it very much.
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
WHY was everything so sweet?? Baan Thai had been on my list to try every since I moved here because of the reviews. After two years, I finally had to chance to try it and it was just okay. We ordered the Spicy Eggplant and Beef Oyster. The Spicy Eggplant should be named Sweet Eggplant because there was no hint of spice at all. I requested it to be spicy but that's not what I got at all. And to top it off, it was swimming in a pool of oil. The Beef Oyster was okay. It tasted like both the dishes were made with the same sauce base which was weird to me because I have never had two different Thai dishes taste so alike. Even if other places use the same sauce base, they do it in a way where you can't tell. Usually when you're super hungry, even an okay place tastes amazing but I was left so disappointed and confused! Maybe I ordered the wrong dishes here but man oh man it was not what I expected at all.
google avatar

Anila Y.

Yelp
Finally got the chance to try this Thai place! I am glad we decided to make the drive out for date night. What stood out about this place place is that it is extremely authentic flavor-wise. We ordered spring rolls, yellow curry, and pad-thai (all vegetarian). The pad thai had the exact flavors of pad thai that I always crave. I also love the yellow curry. Yellow curry isn't usually my go-to curry, but I just loved the creaminess of this one. They also didn't over-do it with the potato. The tofu was cooked well too. I knocked off a star because the spring rolls were very bland. Furthermore, we ordered our food spicy, and all that meant was that they sprinkled a bunch of crushed red pepper flakes all over our curry and noodles!!! It totally took away from the authenticity of the dishes. Next time I would probably just forgo having my food spicy so that I can just enjoy the flavors without the added taste of pizza-parlor crushed red pepper. I also thought it was weird that the curry was served on a plate. This made serving ourselves a very difficult task. Finally, they did charge us for extra steamed rice even though the amount of rice that came with the curry was not nearly enough. Despite these minor disturbances, of all the thai places in the Triangle I have tried so far, I would definitely pick this one to satisfy my occasional thai cravings! Plus vegetarian friendly is always a bonus :)

Yelp
So I have eaten here several more times. The food is really outstanding and completely 5 stars!. I am in love with their Wonton soup and think it's the best I have EVER had. Their red curry is the best in the area. Their Cantaboon Pad Thai is a specialty and really, really good. Their service is still a three star and very hit and miss. The answer for me is carry out. All the yummy food without the poor service. If you are eating in, alot extra time.

Yelp
Very good, they are one of my go-to lunch spots since the pandemic started. They observe good practice around the Covid-19 guidelines and are very timely, nice, and punctual. My go-to dishes are pad Thai and Tom Yung soup, and they are excellent - have had them with chicken, shrimp, and tofu.....all very tasty. My experience has been that if a Thai place can't do pad Thai well, they can't do much else well. Highly recommended.

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
We ordered the Pad Thai with Shrimp and Red curry with tofu. Both were delicious and we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Onvara A.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try Baan Thai for a while so I'm glad I finally got to go! Good, authentic Thai food. Service was not the best, but food made up for it. I got the Pad Prik Basil with chicken, bell peppers, onions, garlic, green beans, and basil. My friend got the Lad Na Noodle - wide noodles in brown gravy sauce with broccoli and carrots. We both enjoyed our dishes! We split the Thai custard and sticky rice and mango and sticky rice desserts - both delicious. I was so so happy to find that they had Thai custard here!

Basel B.

Yelp
I would not recommend this food for a Thai food lovers. It taste more like chinéese than Thai. Spicy basil chicken didn't have a taste to it. It's more like dark water and a whole onion, a whole bell pepper and 10 small pieces of chicken I do regret it. Spring rolls looks like the same ones you get from Cisco. Never again Oh yes the one star is for the steamed rice
google avatar

Saiteja G.

Yelp
Good Thai place to go in apex. Probably the better one in the lot. I have been here about a good number of times and the traditional curries are good. I am not a fan of their specialities. If u want to have some friend price and a Panang curry. I will go back here as I have no choice in town.
google avatar

Julia M.

Yelp
Atrocious. Disgusting. Didn't know red curry could get this bad. They put so much sugar into it, it's inedible. I took out red curry with chicken and extra bamboo shoots and Thai Dumpings. The Dumpings were fine but the red curry was absolutely too sweet. Like a dessert. Same goes for their Thai tea. It's as sweet as sweet tea at Bojangles but also it lacks in favoring that makes it Thai. Save your money go somewhere else.
