"A fixture in Covington since 2015, this family owned Thai restaurant brings that country’s traditional regional specialties to the walkable downtown. From curries and stir-fries to green papaya salad and chicken satay, the balance of sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and spicy flavors prevails. Baan Thai’s varied lunch menu is a bargain." - Beth D'Addono

Yelp
Best Pad Thai I have ever eaten. Service was great. Plan to return when back in that area.

Bailey B.

Yelp
This place without a doubt is the best Thai food the Northshore has to offer. Get the red curry, pad Thai, or basil fried rice. Everything is great but these are the top 3. I eat here at least once a week! Friendly customer service as well and the owner is a sweetheart!!

Jim H.

Yelp
Always outstanding! Service is excellent and friendly, food is amazing the sushi is perfect. I will add another review a bit later

George O.

Yelp
Solid Thai cuisine in a nice space w incredible, friendly service @ an extremely reasonable price

Craig B.

Yelp
This was my first Thai food and I will try it again. I guess I just like different spices and taste, so this did not meet my wishes this particular evening. That said, the service was more than excellent. I was the only customer and it was late. I was reminded of the Hemingway short story,"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place." Of course, by the time I was finished taking my time, there were just the owner and me remaining. She kindly offered me a ride to my car, parked some distance away (long story, never mind). I politely declined and departed, thinking I should try Thai cuisine one more time. Not wanting to be too prejudiced.

Yelp
Almost didn't find it as it had moved up the street from where it had been for years. As always Ms Gem continues with outstanding Thai dishes, although she doesn't do the lunch buffet like she did at the other location. Mussaman Curry is my always favorite! And the Mango Sticky Rice for dessert!

Trey B.

Yelp
This little gem does not disappoint. We've eaten at all Thai restaurants on the north shore and this is by far #1. It is small but outstanding.

Yelp
How the mighty have fallen! In its previous location, this restaurant was the best Thai in Covington. No longer. We waited for our food for over an hour on Mother's Day with only three other tables filled. The food was mediocre, but the speed of service was dreadful. On top of that, the corner of the dining room had constant ants crawling onto our table, along with a fly and beetle to keep them company. I'm sorry to say that I do not plan to return.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing authentic Thai food. Amazing service, and an incredibly nice relaxed atmosphere. And of course the food was incredible! Highly recommended.

James C.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I love Thai food and I live in Houston. This is better than anything I have had in Houston super authentic. Perfect level of spicy. I had the stir fry eggplant with chicken and the TomYum soup with chicken. Both were fabulous. Service was great. It was a Tuesday night so not busy. I will be back the next time I am Covington for sure!!

Yelp
save your money and go to the Thai place in Mandeville instead. Waitress was not attentive whatsoever upon all occasions of me dining there. She would be eating or on her phone the entire time and almost have an attitude when you ask her to refill your drinks which you have to get up and find her to do that. Also out of Thai tea every time I go there even when they had only been open for a few hours and don't close till 9:00 p.m.. Portions are very small compared to every other Thai place that I have been. The aesthetic is not very attractive either; I would not recommend except to take your food to go and you have to make sure to ask items you are ordering to go are actually available before you show up and they don't have what you ordered.

Emily M.

Yelp
Service: rude, the larger girl, doesn't know the menu, told me to read the menu myself. Food: really salty, and oily. Will not come back.

Mary D.

Yelp
We stopped in here because we wanted Thai food. We went there for dinner and I think they cater mostly to the lunch crowd and take out in the evening because no one was there. It is very close to the Covington courthouse. We ordered pad woon sen and drunken noodles and both were really good but if you don't like spicy, order your drunken noodles mild. I loved the flavor of the pad and the crispness and freshness of the veggies. I also loved the texture of the glass noodles. I would definitely go back or order take out.

Amy S.

Yelp
Have totally enjoyed the food from here. Excellent service. Amazing menu. Hubby and I have tried several different things and all have been perfect. I order differently than most people due to dietary issues and Baan Thai manages to get things perfect for me every time. Mother's Day they had a special sushi roll and it was magnificent! Try this place - you'll love it!

Kristen J.

Yelp
We ordered a house salad, pad Thai, pad kee mow, pineapple fried rice with shrimp, Thai tea, and mango sticky rice. EVERYTHING was phenomenal. The customer service was wonderful too. The sweet lady who cooked the food came out and talked to us for a while. Love the good vibes of this place.

Kim B.

Yelp
Food is just ok. Portions are small. And worst of all is that I've called at least three times within the last month to place an order and each time they said they were out of something prompting me to go elsewhere. (Dumplings, thai stuffed wings, etc) Very disappointing. Also, they do not have the friendliest people working there, kinda rude.

Michael B.

Yelp
Phenomenal food, service, and the owner is amazing! Family owned and operated with love. I WILL BE BACK when I do business in this area.

Lalitha V.

Yelp
After a tiring journey from North Carolina to Louisiana landed here for dinner as most places were closed on a Sunday evening in downtown Covington. The restaurant has vegetarian options which is very difficult here since it's a seafood place. Had fried vegetable spring rolls for starters - good (Pad Wee) - noodles with veggies for the main course - it was very good and flavors were on spot! Thai rice pudding with coconut milk for desert - omg! This was out if the world. I didn't expect this to taste this good!! I am going to eat this a few more times before I leave this place. Service was good. Parking was easy as I went a little later in the night and the owner is a very pleasant lady to chat with. Sorry for not taking pictures, was too hungry and tired that I just gobbled up the food

Mary Sue G.

Yelp
We were extremely disappointed in the Pad Thai take out. One was so dark it tasted burnt. I called the restaurant to ask about it and was told they were using a new sauce, nothing else offered. I probably will not go back to the restaurant.

Wesley G.

Yelp
Mixed reviews. Decent Thai food place for the price. Had the Pad Thai & Curry Noodles with no complaints. Order arrived at the table fairly quickly. On the other hand, may want to consider take out or expect some potential impoliteness from the waitress. For myself, the hostess-waitress ask if we where there for pick-up or take-out. I said no we would like to dine in. We waited to be seat for a few minutes then I asked her if we could seated. Note, there wasn't any other customers at the restaurant. She then acted frustrated and then "corrected" stating I didn't let her know we wanted to dine in. Later about half way through our meal three more people arrived for dine in. I witnessed the same waitress arguing with them while they tried to order. Not just one, but all three.

Marie E.

Yelp
Was really excited to try this place and was just left really disappointed. The staff is very friendly but the food was just not good.

Angie T.

Yelp
So they do a buffet at lunchtime now. Not quite my thing but, it's pretty good actually. The Pad Thai is good, the potstickers are great and the curry is so amazing I ate two bowls of it. Almost licked the bowl after my second one. And it's cheap. You cannot beat 8 bucks a person all you can eat Thai. Walk in, seat yourself, have your drink order taken then serve yourself. It's legit for a buffet.

Fairy L.

Yelp
Very neat and clean. Fancy and romantic at dinner time. They are known for their buffet. I do not do eat at buffets therefore I have sampled off the regular menu which is very good. All i vegetarian items are fresh.

Steve I.

Yelp
Covington is a really small city but it has a good number of Thai restaurants. Of the few Thai restaurants on the Northshore that I have been to Sala is the best. The outdoor patio is a great dining option. My friend and I came here recently and we were very pleased with both the service and food. We were seated immediately upon our arrival. The lady who served us was really friendly. My friend had the Phanaeng Curry w/shrimp and it was very good. The curry was not overwhelming. I opted for the Chicken Cashew Nut made Thai hot. It was absolutely wonderful. Spiced just right for me. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. The presentation of the dishes was very good as well. The cozy atmosphere, welcoming staff, and amazing food make this restaurant one of the best choices on the Northshore.

John L. H.

Yelp
This restaurant is incredible. Located in beautiful downtown old Covington, Sala Thai is a relatively new restaurant with amazing food. The building appears to be an old house. The dining area is spread out in separate rooms and there is also a patio for outdoor dining. The restaurant wasn't busy so we had a room all to ourselves. The server was very friendly and helpful. He brought out two complimentary fried dumplings containing cream cheese, crab meat and vegetables. It was very tasty. We ordered spring rolls and Shrimp Tom Yum Soup. The soup was among the best I've had. The broth was perfectly tangy with tomatoes, green onion and mushrooms. The spring rolls were vegetarian and were perfectly fried. For entrees we ordered the sweet and sour shrimp and the Thai Cashew nut with shrimp done Thai hot. I knew I was in for a treat when the waiter warned me that the cook enjoyed making dishes Thai hot and that I had better be prepared. Anytime a warning like this is given, I know I am in for a treat. It was incredible. The spice was wonderfully hot and made me feel alive. Even when very spicy, Thai food still has an incredible flavor. This dish was great. The sweet and sour shrimp was equally good, but significantly less spicy. We thoroughly enjoyed this meal and will absolutely return for more great food.

James O.

Yelp
I repeatedly come back for the yellow curry. Even as takeout, it's a lot of food! Delicious and quite filling. Planning ahead for lunch tomorrow, I also took home the Pineapple Fried Rice with chicken tonight. So, can't speak to that dish yet... but it looks yummy!

Michael L.

Yelp
I thought I had already reviewed Baan Thai (formerly Sala Thai). It is one of my favorite restaurants on the Northshore. The curries are awesome and the homemade soups never disappoint. Their buffet is an absolute standout. Fresh food every few minutes, a wide selection from their menu is served on the buffet: salads, entrees, appetizers, desserts - everything is fantastic and fresh. They capture Thai flavor better than any other restaurant in the area and that is saying a lot because we are blessed with a multitude of choices here. The people that run it are 100% dedicated to making sure you have a good experience and are just as friendly as could be. (John Besh has commented on their great service and good nature) My friend and I showed up in the late afternoon and the buffet was closing down. No problem! They cooked whatever we wanted and charged us the standard charge of $8.95. Best Thai food and best value in the whole area.

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Baan Thai has amazing Thai food! My family has been going for almost 9 years and the food is always good.

Stuart T.

Yelp
Great food. Friendly staff. Love this place. Visiting from Michigan, but this is already my fav in the area.

Emily F.

Yelp
I've ordered a few times via Menu Express. It's not best but the only Thai restaurant available for delivery in my area. Most of the times, we ordered drunken noodles and pineapple fried rice. The drunken noodles are a bit dry, but seasoning is decent. Pineapple fried rice is good. Both dishes are spicy even we ordered MILD. They need to go easy on the chilly, so kids can eat too.

Carolyn H.

Yelp
The food was amazing. We shared the Green Curry and Pad Thai. I miss their old location in a house, but their future looks bright in the new space. Can't wait to go back!

Chris J.

Yelp
I have to admit I'm not a Thai food expert. This is the third time I've tried Thai food, and all I can say is WOW! This place was great food, so many different dishes I tried and all with fresh ingredients. You can taste the freshness in all the ingredients they use here. I was amazed. I'm a huge spicy food eater and this place gives you five levels of spice to choose from. I chose 3-4 and it was perfect for me. Great service from the waitress and the price can't be beat. Will be returning for sure!

Stephen R.

Yelp
If you are looking for the best Thai Food on the plant then this is the place! This place has the absolute best Thai food I have ever eaten! We stumbled upon this place in downtown one day and have been going here for years! The food always comes out perfect! The staff is friendly and always do everything to take care of us! I always recommend this place to anyone looking for some good eats!

John K.

Yelp
This place has become my go to solution for a great meal cooked by someone else. I love curry and other meat free dishes. They're fast, delicious, reliable and friendly.

Roger B.

Yelp
Been going here for around five years! The family that runs and works in the restaurant is so nice and friendly. The food is A+ 100 and has vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, and dairy free options.

Michael M.

Yelp
Ambience and food was great. I had the green curry with roasted duck. Spicy and flavorful. The owner was so very nice. I will return.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Delicious Thai food. The Basil fried rice is one of my favorites as well as the drunken noodles. You can request your spiciness level. All items are made fresh to order.

Spencer W.

Yelp
Every so often I order their pineapple fried rice w/pork "three hot" and it is so tasty & perfect.

Mark B.

Yelp
Wife and I wanted to some take-out thai. This place was very legit. Online menu is not exactly the same as the in house menu, just be aware. We went in to order as there was an issue trying order over the phone. As we waited, the lady, who I assumed owned the place, had us try the dancing shrimp salad which is not on the menu was amazing. We took home some green curry, chicken satay, and beef salad. All were awesome. In retrospect we would have ordered the dancing shrimp over the salad we brought home. Everything is cooked to order so it takes a few minutes for them to cook your food which I much prefer to big vats. Dining room was nice, but we were tired so food was great to go.

Karen C.

Yelp
Ok so this was my second time ordering take out Pad Thai. It was bad both times. It was a gob of dry noodles. No real sauce to coat the noodles, a smidgen of bean sprouts, and I had to look for the meat. I will not return. Wasted my money.

Manish N.

Yelp
So I finally found the best Thai restaurant in Louisiana and it's in Covington 'Baan Thai.' They have buffet for $8.95 from Mon-Sat 11a-2.30p so I got to try everything and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed with anything. Buffet had 3 different types of soup including my favorite hot and sour soup, spring rolls, pork, chicken and shrimp toasts, soft spring rolls, steamed chicken dumplings, 2 different types of salad, papaya salad & yum salad chicken, pad Thai, mixed vegetables, Thai basil chicken, red curry chicken, 3 different types of rice, sticky rice, white rice and fried rice and desserts. Great service with courteous and professional employees. I'm from NYC so not easily impressed but this Thai restaurant will probably give most Thai restaurants in NYC, a run for their money.

Christy F.

Yelp
Great Thai food!!! I enjoyed the soft spring rolls with peanut sauce, and cashew chicken. Both were fabulous!

Victoria A.

Yelp
BEWARE! There's a reason why this scum bucket is called BAAN Thai. You'll be "BAANned" if you try to discretely explain to your server that a dish from the lunch buffet is cold after they've scolded in front of other guests for not eating all of your food. We're not children. We understand how buffets work. We regularly enjoyed your food. We just prefer to eat hot EVEN warm food over cold. Fair warning to everyone: If you dine at this joke of a business, make sure to force feed yourself every cold bite before the lunch lady gets angry that you expressed concern with their ill prepared food.

Krista J.

Yelp
Authentic and amazing Thai! Everything was great, we ordered for 3 adults and 2 children and everyone loved their meal! We will be going back for more!

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
EXCEPTIONAL. I LOVE that their lunch buffet is even open on the weekend (Saturday only), so I took my husband as a treat for going into work with me on a weekend and we made it into a little date! It's a quaint little house and the moment you walk in the front door you are greeted by the delicious, savory smells of Thai food and the buffet in front of you! The set-up is great. Literally the moment you walk in the door, you get a plate, can go down the buffet filling your plate while staff greets you, gets your drink order, and sets up a table for you! Ours was by the cute little window, and it was the sweetest little home-like place I've ever eaten. It feels super fancy, despite being casual, I highly recommend it for a date. PLUS, the food is exceptional. From the crispy egg rolls and dumplings, to pad see ew, Thai fried rice, amd pineapple chicken, which was my favorite. I loved it because it forced me to get out of my comfort orders of pad Thai and green curry and try new dishes that I loved! Forgot the name of their ground chicken dish, but it had a lot of basil, was a bit spicy, and so exceptionally decadent, too! I really love that Thai merges sweet, salty, and spicy because it's always so unique and satisfying. Service was also exceptional and fast and overall it was a magical experience. WORTH THE DRIVE FROM THE SOUTHSHORE.

Bryson L.

Yelp
This place is somewhere everyone needs to try. Every single thing I had was incredible from the papaya salad to egg rolls to chiang mai rice !

Basura B.

Yelp
Ordered spicy basil eggplant, they must of been out and didn't have the decency to tell me, so cut up zucchini instead. Staff was rude, didn't put any condiments in bag. finally, it Was a mess in there. Just all around trash.

Leisl B.

Yelp
*FYI: New phone number! 985-377-6906* Great for take-out or dine in. Restaurant is BYOB. Cute atmosphere in old house, sitting out on the porch is especially nice. Fast service, generous portions. If you want your curry super spicy, ask for it "Thai hot."

James F O.

Yelp
So disappointed... Been here several times and the food was decent. But every time I went back it got worse. Totally inconsistent! This time I ordered out and for the very last time. Soft spring rolls were just bad, basically just lettuce and the shrimp tasted old, even the peanut sauce wasn't good....at all. Beef Pad Thai was the biggest disappointment as it was flavorless and bland, dry, no veggies, just served with a small container of crushed peanuts and some type of spices... never again. Now the green curry I had was bland especially when the last time I had it here it was so spicy it was barely edible. This time it wasn't even spicy or flavorable. I even mentioned this to the person who took my order and they said they have no control over this. Basically no guarantee!on how it will come out... that's bat sh** crazy. Know the food you serve. I've eaten enough Thai food to make this review and recommend people to stay away!!!! Consistency folks! It also looked like there were too many cooks in the kitchen. So sad for me and them.

Margie V.

Yelp
Great Thai food right in downtown Covington. Their lunch buffet is a real deal, but dinner is just as wonderful. Highly recommended!
