The 16 Best Restaurants In Northern Liberties

"Right across from Apricot Stone in The Piazza is Baan Thai, a small BYOB that’s a good place to come for a casual weeknight dinner with a few friends when you want things like pad see ew and duck panang in a curry coconut sauce. During the summer, they have a ton of outdoor seating on the patio, so it’s worth blocking off an entire Friday night to hog one of their tables under the string lights until you’ve finished all the wine you brought." - candis mclean, alison kessler

My fiance and I have lived in Northern Liberties for a few years, and we keep coming back to Baan Thai because it is absolutely delicious. The restaurant makes delicious food and has such great variety on the menu. My fiance and I have some dietary restrictions, and whenever we add notes to our order to remove ingredients, they are always done with no issue and clearly marked on the container. We LOVE the food, and most of all, we love the owner. She is so sweet, caring, friendly and dedicated. Any time I've gone and interacted with her, it's been a great conversation where she shows how much she cares about her restaurant, the food and the area in general. Already looking forward to our next order!

Lovely little place in NoLibs. Owner is very attentive and eager to please. Enjoyed appetizer fresh summer rolls with tofu, pineapple shrimp fried rice and duck with peanut sauce entress and beautifully served sticky coconut rice with mango for desert.

If you find your self in Northern Liberties and your partner is a vegan then Baan Thai is the place. Wonderful flavors and a charming host

Top-Notch Authentic Goodness! Meat and meatless options. Chicken saté was deliciously marinated and juicy. The accompanying peanut sauce was sweet and superb. Had it with steamed rice and wanton soup because I kept it light. The rest of the party had Pad Thai (tofu) and Khao Soi. Both huge portions and tasty. Thai teas (one traditional—with lime— and one classic, more famous—with half-and-half) were delicious! Chef/owner took our order and was meticulous in respecting dietary concerns. She even made a custom wonton soup broth! That’s just unheard of. Lovely couple owns and runs the place. Friendly prices and beyond friendly staff. Eyeballing sticky rice and mangoes as well as fried bananas with ice cream for next time. Table next to us had the sweet potato “cream” puffs. Highly recommend! Definitely will be back!

Best Fried Veggie Dumplings I ever had! Majority filled with mushrooms 😋 we also enjoyed the Tom Yum (lemongrass & coconut milk) soup with veggies as well as Thai Basil Noodles... the soup could have been better... overall a great ambiance and service... We even met Ericka Alexander (Maxine from Living Single 🤗)

What happens when you have a food allergy, such as GLUTEN, and a restaurant either doesn’t read the notes in ALL CAPS or CROSS-CONTAMINATES the food? Nearly ten (10) hours later you’re still nauseous and have made more trips to the bathroom than digits in a phone number. That is my sickening experience ordering Baan Thai Thai Cuisine through the HORRENDOUS delivery service, UBER EATS. What was ordered was Pad Thai with Chicken (that possibly contained fried tofu), garnished with 9 bean sprouts and a wedge of lime, and specified GLUTEN-FREE, both in the instructions, and dietary restrictions. The second item ordered, Pad See Ew with Pork, also specified in the instructions, and dietary restrictions as gluten free, was never eaten. It’s bad enough when you cannot trust that a restaurant understands the severity of food allergies. When you add to that placing your order through the consistently WORST food delivery service, UBER EATS, you are infuriated that a corporate culture has no concept of customer-centricity. They simply don’t care about anything than collecting your money. I don’t recommend anyone with a food allergy to order from Baan Thai. Additionally, avoid Uber Eats at all costs- both are literally sickening.

Google
Incredible place! The food was delicious, great portions. I loved the menu variety and prices! BYOB is an extra perk. I highly recommend dining in although it seemed to be very popular for its take-out. Pum the Chef was delightful and came out to check on us and our food. We will be back!

Google
Causal BYO Thai place in northern liberties. Many other dining options nearby but decided to give this place a shot for restaurant week. They were understaffed so service was a bit slow but despite that, the service was good. Food is reasonably priced and the Thai ice tea was phenomenal. Ordered the Pad Thai and it was as expected for the price, 4/5. Will certainly come by again to try other entrees.

R T.

Yelp
Awesome family run place. We ate there with family and the owner/chef Pum took great care of us. The food was fresh and tasty and she also accommodated our vegan and gluten free needs. We then ended up hosting a 30 people graduation party there which turned out great as well. Everyone appreciated the food, ambience and service. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I ordered online for take away. It was ready on time. It was a Saturday night a 8 pm and there was no one in the restaurant. The person that greeted me was enthusiastic and friendly. I ordered pad se ew It was not very good. It didn't have any taste. I think the mushrooms were from jar?? The other veggies were good and fresh. I dined in about 4 years ago on a great first date. I recall we thought the food ok.

Yelp
I would recommend avoiding this establishment. I placed a pickup order for a chicken pad thai. When I arrived, the chef came out with my order and said that she put too much sauce in the pad thai and that it was mushy, but I should try it to see if I liked it. I immediately said no, please remake it or give me a refund. She again asked me to try it. I couldn't believe it. The restaurant refused to remake my order or give me a refund, and I was left with mushy inedible pad Thai. Honestly one of the most bizarre experiences I have ever had in a restaurant.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
-Update: Owner contacted me with an apology and a partial refund. She was very nice. I hope she can get back on track. Sorry to say after being a fan for many years, we will not order from here again. We picked up take out a few nights ago that was actually inedible. Nearly all of it got tossed. The milk in the thai iced coffee was sour. The chicken pad thai was an inedible mess that tasted old. Very sorry to see this place go down hill. I tried to reach out privately through the feedback link that they send after ordering and got no response.

Yelp
This place is in my neighborhood and we tried it a long time ago during Covid and thought it was ok but remembered the Tom kha soup was really good. My husband was craving the soup on a cold day and decided to get that and also drunken noodles. The soup was good and as we remembered it but the drunken noodles were probably the worst drunken noodles I've ever had. It literally has no sauce and it felt like they just put black pepper in it.

Louise Y.

Yelp
Randomly stopped in during early lunch hours. The owner was the only one working the entire restaurant but she was transparent and apologetic. The food was absolutely worth the wait, which wasn't bad at all. Only regret is not ordering more. Now part of my regular rotation!! Support this business, the food is delicious and the owner is a kind, hardworking individual.

Mia'Cree M.

Yelp
It was really bad. Rice was soggy yet the vegetables were burnt. Had to send the food back. The shrimp was the only good part. Waitress was rude. Establishment was dirty.

Jesse V.

Yelp
Owner is absolutely amazing. Every dish we have tried has been delicious. Such a cute family owned business. Will continue to come back.

Yonatan S.

Yelp
The food was bad. Made us feel really bad afterwards, not fresh and too many spices. Do not recommend

Yelp
Amazing server, Sirin, was very friendly and knowledgeable about all of the food! Authentic Thai cuisine! Papaya salad was delicious!

Yelp
Such nice people, especially Pum (like Puma without the A), and a lovely dining room. The menu is vast and includes street food, which I hadn't seen at a Thai restaurant before. We had the Pad See Ew and Pad Woon Sen, both were good but the noodles were a bit overcooked. It may have been that they were made fresh, and if that's the case they will always be a little more "mushy" than store-bought noodles. The flavor though was spot-on and full of umami. No alcohol but BYOB, so stop and get your beer before heading over. We are anxious to go back and try some of their street food and spend another meal with Pum. You won't be disappointed in your meal.

Yelp
I've been ordering out from this place for a couple of years and always love their food but I dined in for the first time last night. The food was delicious, we ordered so much! One of my favorite items were the curry chicken puffs, those were on their special menu. We also ordered fried rice, green curry (so good!!!), chocolate hazelnut cake and fried bananas. Everything was delicious but what I loved most was how lovely the owner was! You can tell she takes a lot of pride in the food she cooks and she always made sure we were satisfied with our meals.
google avatar

Joey S.

Yelp
Very very nice people, but our food was just OK. It didn't compare to some other Thai food we've had in the city. I had drunken noodles and the dish lacked texture, structure, and was kind of one large mush. For starters, we had the fried sweet potato which were undercooked and still a bit hard. However, the fried pork dumplings were some of the best I've had!

Yelp
Yesterday was our first take-out experience, and it was a nice 15% off for our first visit! We ordered chicken green curry, chicken massaman curry, tom kha soup, and the Baan Thai Sampler plate. Everything came to $50 using the discount for our pick up order. I was really excited for the sampler plate, but overall it was ok - my favorite thing was the chicken satay. I wanted to love the firecracker, but unfortunately it was soggy - probably because of the takeout container condensation. I really enjoyed the spice level of my green curry. I personally eat very very spicy, so I would recommend to order a spice level down if you're spice sensitive. My husband also enjoyed his massaman curry. I didn't really enjoy the tom kha, but that could be a personal preference as my husband liked the broth - but agreed with me that there were WAY too many onions in the soup - and we love onions! Overall, it was an OK experience and nothing is screaming at us to come back.

Yelp
Came here on a rainy Saturday afternoon for lunch with a party of 5. It's a great hidden gem in Northern Liberties. The chef was our server for the afternoon, due to the unfortunate circumstances that their server couldn't make it in. The chef is very passionate about her food and it shows. Everyone enjoyed their dish. I ordered the secret menu item which is the sow fish (I think that's how you spell it). It was AMAZING 10/10 would recommend, I hope she puts it on the menu. The flavor profile was light and citrusy, the sauce was delicious the fish was perfectly cooked. The chef also made it extra spicy because I love spice. This will be our new go to Thai restaurant. They also have a really delicious Thai coffee which I might like better than Vietnamese coffee, and a really bug dessert menu, so do not skip out on dessert.

Yelp
So good! I got Baan Thai for the first time today and was blown away by how good the food was. I enjoyed ordering online via the main website, it was really convenient and I received messages regarding my order. The owner greeted me and was incredibly kind and seemed very passionate about their work. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Surprisingly mid...ordered a massaman curry, fried calamari, and pad see ew and let me tell you...this is some of the most under seasoned food I've had in a looong time. I had to throw this back on the stove myself and add some flavor...paying $60 for delivery and still cooking at home is crazy. Quick delivery, but this food needed more time in the kitchen. Never again, nope.

Jim L.

Yelp
Wow...very impressive. There isn't one negative thing I can say about this restaurant from start to finish. Staff (Pum) was very responsive and actually guided us to what she thought we would want in terms of entrees based upon our likes and wants. That was personalized attention. The food came and the appetizer to the main entree was superb. The food was tasty, just enough spices and flavor. One of the best Thai places I have eaten at. The menu was broad....but lots to choose from. I know we will go back once more and enjoy other dishes here. The entire experience was positive.

Dave H.

Yelp
Very good food and portion size for the Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles. The owner was short staffed and made our dinner herself. She apologized for the wait but our food was out in less than 10 minutes. She was extremely nice and I'd be happy to support this local business again.
google avatar

Keerthana R.

Yelp
The service was really good and the people there are super nice! The ambiance is okay. The food was just okay nothing super special. The dishes did not have much flavor and were a bit bland.

Louisa M.

Yelp
The food is soo pricey for the portion you receive. The flavors are solid, not great though. The owners are really nice and the interior is decorated well too, but I wouldn't come back. The price and lackluster flavors will keep me away.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to try this place on a Friday night and made an rsvp for 6:15. Now, I've been to Fishtown multiple times but the this location in particular is difficult to find a parking. We had to drive at least 20 mins around and around before finding one. Secondly, when we arrived I was surprised that there was only one other party for dining in so that kinda raised our eyebrows. Nevertheless, we were excited to check out this place! Our waitress came and was kind and attentive to us so that's always a plus. We ordered multiple items (check pix) and I didnt like the taste of the soup. I thought it was blend and not hot enough(temperature wise) and was quite surprised at how small the portion was. The beef salad was tasty, but the meat was tough-great flavor. No complaints on the drunken noodles, nothing spectacular about the basil fried rice (one dimensional) and the fried fish was tough as well-over cooked. The fried rice and noodles have good portions-def can have one more person eating them with us. Not a bad place to eat but def not the first resto I would pick for Thai food.
google avatar

Craig W.

Yelp
Got the Baan Thai sampler and Pad Thai. The chicken satay was as dry as the wood skewer it was served on and the meatball practically crumbled when picked up. The dumplings, wonton and sweet potato lacked any kind flavor. The proteins in the pad thai were cooked well, but the sauce was so sweet it was like eating a teaspoon of sugar with each bite. Even the squeeze of lime didn't cut through the sweetness. I had to take a break from eating it a couple times but wasn't going to waste $20. It's always hit and miss with places you've never tried before and unfortunately this is a miss for me.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. Found it while searching for Thai restaurants near Penns Landing. This one was the furthest in the search but had exactly what I was looking for (yellow curry). The meal was great. I ordered the Yellow Curry with Chicken lunch special which included an appetizer and side. I chose the spring roll and salad with peanut dressing. Everything was what I had hoped for and it satisfied my cravings. The lunch special is a very good value and I went back to my hotel full and happy. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant.
google avatar

Chan L.

Yelp
We saw good reviews of this place and wanted to give it a try. The duck basil was decent. The duck wasn't crispy like how duck basils usually are and the basil flavor wasn't there but the flavor was good. Pad Thai was very orange, we are not used to this color. The flavor is good but noodles are super dry. The pad kee mao was our least favorite. Very bland no flavor at all. We will probably not be ordering here again.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Service was horrendous. Pad thai was very bad. Worse I ever had. The sauce was very jammy like and sweet, did not taste like typical pad thai. They gave me the wrong dessert, we had to wait for water that never came, and they only had one waitress working the entire evening. It was restaurant week. Not coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
New to the neighborhood and we're trying to land "our spots". We found our Thai Spot for sure in Baan Thai! We ordered takeout on a Saturday and it was a quick and painless process. Phone to table in 30 minutes. Staff is Covid ready and eager for your orders! What we snagged: -Money Bags (SO Baan [damn] good!) -Pad Thai (Veggie and Tofu) -Pad Kee Mao (Veggie and Tofu) Everything was VERY flavorful and HUGE portions. All for sub $30. Got two meals out of it all. We'll be back to Baan for all their great dishes for sure! The ONLY constructive feedback is ensuring the tofu isn't as mushy next time around.
google avatar

Todd W.

Yelp
Clean and friendly! Absolutely outstanding meal!!! Pad See Ew, Panang Curray and Chicken Fried Rice all 5s! We were confused by the mix of 5 and few lower reviews?!? It turns out that apparently there are a couple other Bahn/Baan... Thai restaurants... so maybe that had something to do with the mix of reviews? The wife/husband (chef & owners) team checked on our table multiple times. They were happy to answer questions and tell us about their background story. Super sweet! Highly Recommend!!!

Hakim A.

Yelp
I took my wife there for her birthday. The food was excellent, the customer services was great. The owner, and the staff (Ray) were very attentive and took time to converse with us and make sure that we were satisfied. I know we will go back very soon and enjoy other dishes there. The entire experience was positive.
google avatar

Rono K.

Yelp
Decent food. Horrible horrible service. Sat at 7, its 9:30 and my wife finally got her meal and its wrong. I got mine at 9. They are sweet people but they need to learn how to run a restaurant.
google avatar

Brendan D.

Yelp
The food was arguably terrible ... we threw out half our order. Won't be ordering again Service ok Ambiance was off no one in the restaurant
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
What a difference a few years makes. I was out of the area for 2.5 years and while away bragged about Baan Thai and how authentic it was. I even had a friend from Thailand over during that time and he agreed that this was as close to home that he's had in the U.S. My meal tonight was the worst Thai food I've ever had. Any seasoning in the beef salad was drowned out by the overwhelming sweetness. The meat that at first bite seemed tender was more mealy lacking any flavor. My favorite dish in the past was the Moo Yang. This version didn't have that balance between the charcoaled meat and the seasoning, like the previous dish, it was overly sweet and mealy. The Chicken Satay had the same quality as their other meats and the flavors were more like tandoori than Thai. Clearly something dramatically changed since a few years ago as Baan Thai was a model of authentic consistency. Sad as this is just a few blocks from home.
google avatar

Helen B.

Yelp
Absolutely AMAZING curry! This place is incredible and the owner is the best. A great cook and super funny! If you like legit Thai, this is the place!
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
I love the food and the service. The baan Thai eggplant is to die for, and their seafood is always cooked fabulous. Honestly have never have a bad dish in five years of coming here. We had chicken curry pops (I think that's the name) from their street food menu and i could have eaten a dozen of them myself.

Jacob B.

Yelp
Got delivery and this was quite possibly the worst takeout I have ever eaten. I think this is the first time I've ever thrown out leftover take out. Panang Curry had an overwhelming cinnamon flavor and the noodles tasted like the meat had been tossed in as frozen. Alternating bites were hot and cold, truly an unsettling experience.
google avatar

Frannie B.

Yelp
It was mediocre at best. The dish had an odd flavor similar to liquorice. My friends curry dish was better. The spices were well done. For almost $60 there was not enough food.Would not recommend.
google avatar

Crystal W.

Yelp
I was in the mood for Thai food so I decided to stop by since it's the closest Thai place to my apartment. I ordered the basic chicken pad Thai since I figure you can't mess that up. Well it wasn't terrible but it sure wasn't tasty either...there was hardly any chicken and bean sprouts. It was a whole bunch of noodles. Surprisingly there's a few tofu which was a nice touch. I had to go home and scramble a few eggs to add to the dish so it wouldn't look like a plate of sad noodles. The noodle had an odd sour yet sweet taste. I've been to a lot of Thai restuarants in Tampa Bay area in Florida and this one was sadly disappointing and one of the worst I've tried. So if anyone knows a good Thai place in Philly, let me know.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
I love this place. The food is absolutely delicious and made with extra care (favorites include the pad ka pow, pad see ewe, curries, and most recently the "experimental" corn cake). I can also recommend the Thai iced tea. We also love the people who own and run the place. They are super friendly and gracious - it's a joy to be around them. They will make you feel at home. Proud to support a local NoLibs restaurant with terrific food. This is the spot!
google avatar

Emma C.

Yelp
It's always great every time we went. Great bbq pork, seafood pad pork pao, Lardna, green curry and many more! Um, can't wait till next time!
google avatar

Zhen L.

Yelp
I was looking for a good Thai restaurant that is open on Sunday. Search on Yelp and found this spot in Nolibs area. Thx to other Yelpers for their photos!!! I was salivating as I scroll through Yelp's photos lol. They have indoor and outdoor seatings available. When we arrived,it was relatively empty, but it definitely didn't stop us from dining in:) No Thai is complete without Thai Iced tea(not in my book). Baan Thai's Thai Tea is one of the BEST in Philly. I've drank Thai Tea from various locations, but Baan Thai's is definitely one of the BEST. We started off with appetizers and soup. Money Bag, Angel Wings, Beef Satay, and Firecrackers. My favorite is the Money Bag, they look and taste amazing. Love the crispy and crunchy exterior with soft fillings interior. Satay Beef with cucumber salad is also very delicious. Their Tom yam soup hit the spot for me as well. Hubby's favorite is the Firecracker. While my brother's favorite is the Angel Wings. Our appetizers look like a meal right? But we didn't stop ordering, even though we was pretty full lol. We continue with Kang Curry, Duck Tamarind, Thai Fried Rice with crabmeat, Drunken noodles, and Seafood on the flame. Idk if is bc I'm full or what, their entrees lack tastes. Everything I've tasted is just MEH. The only fascinating part is when Seafood on the Flame were presented on the table. It was a seafood entree wrapped in aluminum foil and the staffs lighted on fire. Pretty cool to watch. We have nothing bad to say, but vow to return for appetizers in the future.

Nicole G.

Yelp
Tonight was my first time dining here. Pum did an exceptional job making us feel welcome and gave us the best dining experience. The curry was so flavorful and just the right level of spice, will definitely be back!
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for years now and it never disappoints. Their lunch menu is a perfect combination for 10 bucks. My favorites are their curry, the moo yang, and the bbq pork. Today I went for the red curry with salmon and it was delicious as always. I got a Thai salad with peanut dressing and a vegetable fried wonton. I've never tried their beverages but others in my party have and also say they are tasty. I'm a person who enjoys consistency and Baan Thai is always the same in customer service and food quality. The servers are extremely polite and attentive. I also like the simplicity but cultural decor. A must visit in Northern Liberties.
google avatar

Minaz M.

Yelp
Ordered take out. The red curry (Kang dang curry) with shrimp was delicious and so were the drunken noodles! Will definitely order from here again.

Vandy R.

Yelp
I ordered via Uber Eats tonight. I order steamed dumplings and Kao Soi. Having lived in Thailand 8 years, definitely not quite hitting the spot. The steamed dumplings were very small and the dumpling was gummy and the pork filling very tough. Also, I've ordered a few times trying to give the place a chance, and they have skipped the notes each time. I requested extra pickled greens and for some reason it never happens and the uber delivery doesn't seem to care to even review it. tonight the kao soi was with tofu and vegetables. Except minus the vegetables save for 1 lonely miniature corn. Won't give them another opportunity to disappoint.
google avatar

Isaac A.

Yelp
Ordered takeout during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was fast, hot and delicious! Ordered the Pad See Ew, Drunken Noodle and coconut veggie soup. All with tofu. Good flavors and food portions!
google avatar

Alexander S.

Yelp
Wow! Possibly the best Thai meal I've ever had. From the salad dressing to the fried noodles, the food was perfect! Add the friendly service and eclectic atmosphere and you get a must-visit restaurant, which Baan Thai will now be for me.
google avatar

Jim F.

Yelp
Best Thai in the area, excellent curry. Owners accommodating, friendly and hard working. Outside seating is welcome.
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
The food was amazing and so was the service! Food was very fresh and the portions generous but not heavy, a nice balance between the meats and the rice. When we first sat down the chef/owner walked us through the menu and gave a few suggestions based on our preferences. The dining setting was comfortable for our group of 6. We got thai hot tea, thai iced tea, hazelnut cake and house made coconut ice-cream. We will definitely be returning and recommend everyone try it out.
