A Guide to the Middle Eastern Restaurants in Chicago’s Southwest Suburbs

"Saj is a street-food well loved in Bilad al-Sham, consisting of a flatbread folded over into a half-moon shape that can be served with a variety of fillings. Baba Saj offers everything from labneh with olives to halal mortadella; school-kid classics. Maybe their best is the muhammara saj, made with tomatoes bursting out of the saj itself, is juicy and satisfying. Other offerings include different mana’eesh varieties, shawerma, and msakhan — a flatbread topped with stewed onions, sumac and chicken which the Palestinian city of Tulkaram is particularly well-known for. The Harlem Avenue location is technically in Palos Hills. There’s also a drive-thru and another location in Oak Lawn." - N.A. Mansour

This place goes above and beyond your expectations. They have a lot of different food and service is lightning fast. I didn’t wait even 5 minutes and all I ordered was ready. Their crew is huge and I believe almost all of them are Arab speaking people. It is self service and you should clean up after yourself. Their prices were on cheaper end and portions are big. The place itself was really clean and the special item on their menu was type of bread they make it to your choosing. I love dolma but theirs felt like it was from can. We asked for hot sauce for some reason hot sauce was more salty than spicy. Overall I loved the food and majority of them were very delicious.

The drive to Baba Saj takes either 35 minutes from my home, or 45 minutes from work. Despite this, I happily make the trek at least once a week and stock up on chicken shawarma sandwiches. Im not exaggerating, this is the best shawarma and garlic I’ve had anywhere in the U.S. plain and simple. The famous Halal Guys in Manhattan ain’t got NOTHING on Baba Saj. Thanks to everyone working so hard in that place, I seriously appreciate it.

The food is so good but workers cannot understand english. I get shawerma often and I hate pickles. When I pay 17 dollars for a meal I don’t want to pick pickles out. I get it every week and almost every other week they just leave pickles in my food even though I say like 5 times for no pickles.

Delicious. Hummus had what seemed like some minced green peppers on it, which is not something I've seen before and it really elevated the dish. Both the beef and the chicken shawarmas were excellent. They were juicy with a very satisfying taste. I also appreciate them cutting the wraps down to bit sized pieces. Not something I thought I needed but now I can't live without it. I cannot wait to try more!

Went to Baba Saj two nights in a row and they didn’t disappoint. The first night we tried the gyro bowl and gyro meal. Portions sizes were great and the food was amazing. The toppings such as tomatoes, onions and lettuce were fresh and crisp. The sides that it came with were also amazing. The second night we tried their zinger meal and it had a nice kick to it. Over all great place if you want to grab a bite. Seating can be a little crowded but that just means people love the place.

Amazing place with excellent customer service! I asked for no pickles in my wrap but received one with pickles by mistake. When I brought it to their attention, they immediately made a fresh one without hesitation. The shawarma wraps were delicious, the food quality was top-notch, and the dine-in experience was great. I’ll definitely be going back!

The food was delicious. We ordered chicken roll and shawarma bowl. It tasted great and the quantity was too good. The chicken was nicely seasoned. The interior space was quite small but it was clean and neat. Overall we loved the food and would love to try again!
