Where to Find Next-Level Hummus in Portland | Eater Portland

"This casual, build-your-own bowl style spot found nowhere but Portland serves an array of flavors and mix-ins to pair with a dollop of smooth, creamy hummus. Pros know to double up on the pillowy soft, freshly baked pita bread on the side for dipping. An order of fragrant basmati turmeric rice balances out the hummus’ hardcore garlic taste. Order takeout online for pickup at its Cascade Station and NE Alberta locations." - Michelle DeVona

The food was not it. They were empty when we walked in and the prices are insane for legitimately bad quality food. My boyfriend found a whole piece of raw garlic in his food, and I didn’t even finish mine (which is unprecedented). It seemed like all the food had been sitting out all day and it wasn’t of the highest quality in the first place. Flavorless, which is hard to do for this type of food.

Google
Service was pleasant. The meat was chewy, my least favorite part of the meal. The toppings were great. What bothered my is a homless person walked in he tried to talk to me, I ignored him. He then approached the guy behind the whom gave him a free meal. That's the problem with the homeless they get away with it. This homeless guy was perfectly capable of working, but he chooses to beg for a meal and gets away with it. I have to pay full price plus tip and a person that chooses drugs over work gets a free meal?!? I don't think I'll return for that reason. Shame....

Google
Lunch at Cascade Station 6/28 at noon. Service for a slide down the bar and tell staff what you want for toppings, like Subway, was fine. Atmosphere = any fast food place, chairs are hard. Had Shawarma Lamb+Beef in a bowl at $18. The meat and rice were served barely warm. All the toppings I selected were cold, so with barely warm rice and meat this = pretty much a cold lunch. Toppings had good flavor, the meat was chewy.

Google
I had the lamb & beef shawarma bowl. The rice, toppings and extra sauces are all fantastic. Lower rating because the lamb & beef had a lot of gristle and kitchen area was dirty. Service was great but one of only three tables at the time. Next time I’d try the chicken instead.

Google
Great food! All the good flavors I’ve been missing😋

Google
Babas has some darn good food, and I can say with an extreme amount of confidence that the owner cares, and that the team that works there actually wants you to enjoy your food. I love the spicy pork pita with tomah is actually the best item on the menu and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Google
Baba’s was a place where I could feel the presence of the lord, I walked in and heard build my life playing. I knew this place was different. took a little bathroom break and walked out to build my life playing once again, it’s been 15 minutes and build my life is the only song I’ve heard. Exquisite. Food was amazing but I think I would come back just to hear build my life playing once again.

Google
This place has great service! Went here for lunch. I ordered the lamb and beef shawarma and a side of tabouli. I was going to order their fountain drink as they had stubborn sodas, a favorite of mine, but they were out of order, so a little bit of a bummer there. The standout was their customer service. When I ordered, it was right as they put a new batch of shawarma on the grill, so I had to wait for that to finish cooking before I could get my pita. They pre made my pita with all of the toppings while waiting, but the pita bread hardened up and wasn't fresh in the four or five minutes I had to wait. Instead of just serving the old bread to me like many places might, they threw it away and made a fresh one for me. This is pretty impressive service and commitment to good food. The interior is a little small but mostly clean. Not too bad of a place to sit down and eat. Overall, good place to eat and I would come back.

Yelp
Amazing food. AUTHENTIC SHAWARMA. Usually it's some sponge meat concoction. This was real full lamb pieces and beef. Got a bowl. Lots of free add on options! 10/10!

Yelp
Kinda tasty fast casual food at Cascade Station. Lots of food options at this outdoor mall near Portland Airport. Mediterranean is one of my favorites so the hubby and I agreed to Baba's. They were not busy during dinner hours on a Sunday evening. The employees were mostly in the back and came out to the counter when we were present. Service was reserved yet polite. My go-to is either a falafel plate or wrap. Went with a wrap this time and I found it to be kinda tasty. It was dry so I asked for tzatziki sauce on the side and they gave it to me. Hubby was really impressed though with his lamb and beef shawarma and raved about how good the sauce was. For beverages, just a bottle of Fanta for the hubby and iced water w/lemon for me. The beverage dispenser was out of order and the lemonade dispenser appeared to be getting cleaned or something. Overall, Baba's was A-OK!

Yelp
Ordered dinner to our hotel by DoorDash. The two bowls we got (lamb/steak and spicy pork) were very big and came as we ordered them. The meats were well prepared and the other ingredients seemed fresh. I will say that the bowls (both of them) were very heavy sauced. Too heavy. I think the entrees would have been much better without being drenched in sauce. Not to get graphic, but we each had upset stomachs hours after eating the bowls - I think it was the heavy sauces. I recommend you ask for limited sauce or get some on the side.

Yelp
Haven't gotten my food yet but service is highly disorganized; soda machine is broke with limited drink options. Hoping the food will redeem itself but so far very disappointing experience.

Lamoni C.

Yelp
I got the pork pita and my girlfriend got the chicken rice bowl. Both meats were so incredibly dry. The bowl she said it was super wet and flavorless. My pita wasn't constructed very well the top was just feta cheese and lettuce and the bottom was dry pork and hummus. Also there was an entire clove of garlic in my pita.

Caroline R.

Yelp
We arrived hungry and so ready to enjoy a lamb/beef gyro. Seeing the rotating spit with the meat made us that much more hungry. Sadly, it went downhill fast. They don't actually slice the meat from the spit. They forked out some chunks from a warming drawer. It didn't even look like gyro meat and it didn't taste like it either. The meat was cold. The hummus was salty. The tzatziki sauce was runny and didn't taste as it should. We added some red onion and feta cheese to the pita, both of those tasted fine. The meat had little taste and we couldn't detect any lamb. We did get several hunks of fat/gristle. Pretty disgusting. Neither one of us felt good afterwards and it might have had everything to do with how the temperature of the meat. At $14 for a cold pita with cold tasteless meat, I wouldn't suggest patronizing this place. We certainly will not be back.

Yelp
I have eaten at Baba's more than one person should ever admit, but I can say with great certainty that the food is quite good and that those who criticize it are more than likely probably just having a bad day. I support this business 110% and want to see it thrive. Also Spicy Pork is the best item on the menu and you can't disagree with me.

Hudson R.

Yelp
Food was mid at best and overpriced. I had a lamb and beef bowl and it was $18 for food that didn't fill me up at all. Wish I had gone to the Panda Express or burger place right by it instead.

Yelp
This is a fast casual place that is perfect if you have an appetite. We stuffed our faces but didn't walk away feeling gross because the ingredients are fresh and not to mention flavorful!! The tobulah is delicious and you can't pick just one sauce!! Will definitely come back if I find myself in the area.
google avatar

Olwen C.

Yelp
This place is very much open (Yelp lists it as closed?) and also a great place to grab food before heading to the airport. We walked in at 8:30pm when everything else was closed and the guy was super nice and helpful and the food was good. A little on the pricy side for a fast casual place, but everything was fresh and tasty. I got the falafel bowl. Falafel was flavorful and cooked just right.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients, delicious food - fast, friendly service. Vegetarian and vegan choices and Stubborn soft drinks! If you're in the area give Baba's Mediterranean a try.

Yelp
Had it door dashed to work and it was great food and great delivery service. Ordered the chicken bowl with the rice. I would definitely order it again.

One of the best places in Portland is Baba's Mediterranean grill restaurant at cascade station. Atmosphere 4/5 Service 5/5 Food 5/5

Yelp
2 days in a row they have no chicken kabobs. Someone needs to learn how to order. Really enjoyed my last visit here in 2023. Not so much I'm 2024. Get it together fellas.

Yelp
I very much enjoyed the food and nice service at this location (very good). The shwarma bowls are plenty big enough to share and I also liked the quality of their falafels. Nice and helpful staff (who are kinda busy, tho, taking care of your orders so not all tables will be as clean as you like when they're busy). Very casual interior. Fluffy pita. For the quantity of food the pricing is actually very reasonable. Only issue: Good luck getting a parking spot on weekends at Cascade! Flooded with WA license plates.
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
Solid, but not amazing. Humus is good. Service is way over you and it or whatever. This is Greek Chipotle with a shorter line.
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
They are friendly, fast, flexible and delicious. I would call it the mediterranean subway since you order on the counter step by step. First by selecting if you wanna have a bowl (with rice and humus) a pita (piece of warm bread with a pocket in it to fill the goods in) or a kebob (a meat skewer). Then you have your protein choices like chicken, lamb, pork or vegetarian falafel. On top of that you have a delightful selection of fresh ingredients as topic (like cucumber, onions or lettuce). And finally you have a selection of sauces that Include a yoghurt sauce called Tzatziki I did choose a mic of chicken and pork which normally isn't at the menu but without hesitation they did it! On top a few fresh vegetables including lots of onions (they are red lightly picked onions) and of course tzatziki sauce Let's start with the sauce cause it's on top I had mini tzatziki sauces and this is one of the more authentic ones very delicious and fresh not too much garlic but also you still taste it. The meat was wonderful Crispy well seasoned. I am a happy camper. The only thing is that they are out at the airport I would go more often if they come towards the city :). Well done keep up the good and Delicious work

Irene Y.

Yelp
The bowls were decent, we got the beef/lamb bowl and the chicken bowl as well as several plain kids bowls with just rice and meat. The food was fresh and the hummus was good. The kids didn't like their kids bowls but that is always a hit or miss. The lentil soup was spicy and very heavily flavored with cumin, I should have asked for a sample prior to ordering.

Yelp
Stopped in after picking up starving folks up from PDX. Its close by and has excellent food, great portion size. The Shwarma bowl was great!
google avatar

Brent W.

Yelp
I have eaten here a few times and it is always good. It is nice to have a pita stuffed with veggies, hummus, and other toppings. They need to fix the bathroom door. It is tough to open and close. Piece of advice: if you take the back roads to get here you will drive through encampments and areas with RVs and broken down cars parked everywhere. Stick to the highway.

Yelp
10-26-21 our last night in Oregon...just so happened that Bachelorette was on this evening and we could watch it at our hotel. Previously I always wanted a fancy big meal the last night of any trip but this time was different. Told hubs let's go to Cascade Station cuz I had seen it on our way to the hotel. I had searched for places on Yelp that were about a mile away or less. Hooray they were here! We parked and I saw the name lit up for this eatery. Let's go here! Doc had introduced us to Mediterranean food in Ohio while she was starting her PhD program. Yes!!! Shawarma was on their menu with 3 meat choices. I chose chicken. When prepping my bowl the man asked humus? Sure. Rice? Okay. I was so happy to see it looked like perhaps a saffron rice. I chose lettuce and a mint tahini sauce for the last item to be drizzled on top. Brought it back and enjoyed it at the hotel. The flavor was so comforting and exactly how I like it. So good. Also ordered two pieces of baklava, so flavorful with flakiness and some moist honey- topped off a good takeout meal. I also ordered a chicken kabob for hubs. Both items took a while to prepare and when done the man said Thankyou for your patience.

Noah S.

Yelp
What can I say. I had mixed feelings when we walked in around dinner time and only one person was in the joint. We ordered 2 chicken bowls. I hit hummus and rice, tzatziki, feta and two of the salad toppings. My food tasted good but it was luke warm at best. So was my friends. The rice and the chicken were not hot. I was really disappointed. There is no excuse for serving hot food that's cold.

Elise C.

Yelp
Being so close to mass transit, and the turnover being high, the food is always fresh. The guys serving one up, are generous and pleasant. So far the bathrooms have even been clean. Great fast food!

Elijah P.

Yelp
With much excitement to try a new place I was left dumbfounded when I received my meal. You would expect to have a decent size portion for the price you pay. The service was not horrible but would like to see a friendlier place when ordering. This place did not meet my expectations nor is it a place that I would recommend to someone else. Very disappointed with my experience.

Merry P.

Yelp
Food was good, BUT they over charged the bill and there were unlisted extra costs for sauces/toppings. Some of the menus had 'no' costs listed. Will think twice re. returning.

John S.

Yelp
I ordered a gyro sandwich. Big mistake on my part. The meat had absolutely zero flavor and 75% of the meat was disgusting and full of fat/grizzle which rendered the sandwich inedible. Perhaps the other food offered there is edible, but after my experience I will never know. If you decide to eat there, avoid the lamb/beef at all cost unless you are a fan of fat. 1 and done.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
Friendly service, when you can get there attention. Very noisy, we were the only ones eating at this time 5:30 PM. I ordered beef&lamb, with tabouli - $13 (I believe they offered me rice with the meal as well - but I do not eat rice) Tables were dirty and wobbly. Even the trash can was wobbly. No salt or pepper at table. Three young women working behind the counter, and no other people in the restaurant (should have been a clue). Do yourself a favor, visit Panda Express right next door instead - at least the food will be hot and fresh.
google avatar

Joanne S.

Yelp
I usually take pictures but I was just so hungry! Located next to Panda Express! This is my first time here and I was pleasantly surprised. It's like a build your own bowl or pita. I got the bowl and comes with rice, hummus, and romaine lettuce, and picked the beef and lamb shawarma, baba ganoush, pickled onion, kale and carrots, baba salad, tzatziki and minty tahini ( very refreshing and delicious). Food takes a while since they make they cook their meat fresh! Everything was so good but definitely give yourself some time especially if there's other people before you!
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Impressed by the food and the med flavors. Everything tasted fresh and the sauces were on point. Service was incredibly nice and attentive! They made a mistake on my order and without me even saying something, corrected it promptly. Great food and solid service is a tough combo to find here in Oregon but this place has it.
google avatar

Jacintha T.

Yelp
I love Mediterranean food because of the spices and flavor, this place lacked in both. It was as if they steered down the flavors to meet the masses. Not a fan, would not recommend. Lamb/steak bowl The rice was cooked well, lacked flavor. The lamb and steak combo meat was good, some a little tough. The sauces provided Tzatziki and tahini, were bland. I couldn't even taste any of the dill or garlic. Staff were friendly and the place had nice comfortable cushioned bench chair. Pineapple Cream Soda They had fountain Stubb...something, I don't know the brand. It was fantastic!!! Good mix of both flavors and not too sweet.

Jon ..

Yelp
I enjoyed it. Like so many places, it is a "chipotle" style with you picking proteins, toppings, etc. the falafel side was hot and good. The shawarma (beef and lamb) was quite good as were the toppings. The pita itself was outstanding. I don't live near but would return if I were in the area
google avatar

Dennis C.

Yelp
Delicious food! The best pita bread and hummus I've had, hands down. Prices aren't bad either. The guy working behind the counter was very helpful, too, and had a lot of information about the types of food they had and how they made it. Really enjoyed this dining experience.

Henry O.

Yelp
Excellent service-everyone is very knowledgeable and friendly. Food is fresh and delicous overall a great choice for lunch if your in the area.

Yelp
We reached Portland around 8:30pm and was looking for a place to have a dinner. We searched for the place and came through Baba's Mediterranean Grill. We quickly gave them a call and told them to prepare a Falafel platter and we will pick up. We reached there to pick up the food and food was ready according to our requirements. The falafel platter was tasty and delicious. We loved the food.
google avatar

Shannon Y.

Yelp
Popular South of the border BYO burrito concept meet Mid-east Mediterranean cuisine..Viola!! You get Baba's. Items like kabab's, gyro's, bowls and salads are your choices. Choose one, then your protein option, veggies, sauces and your done. Everything was prepared to order right in front of you while you walk down the line. I had the falafel in a bowl today and the falafel was fried to order with just the right amount of spice. All other veggies, toppings and sauces were fresh and flavorful. Not sure if this is a franchise but this is a well thought out option for a healthy lunch or dinner. Enjoy!
google avatar

Amanda N.

Yelp
Ordered door dash & was craving Mediterranean. The portions were huge & I love the fact that you could customize each bowl. Ordered Beef Shawarma Bowl And Chicken Shawarma Bowl. Customized it with sauce & different condiments. Eat it fast before it gets soggy! It was delicious!
google avatar

Nirag T.

Yelp
Tried on my trip to portland. Pics on yelp seems promising but I was disappointed when I tried it! Don't know how restaurants like these maintain 4.5 rating on yelp. I tried Falafel bowl, to start with I was served burnt falafel in first go. When I brought it their notice the guy at the counter gave me a look as if it is fine for them to server burnt food and even after paying I should just eat it! Then after consulting with few of his colleagues he decided to replace just the Falafels from the bowl. They were unapologetic about serving burnt food and behaved as if they don't care. Even the non burnt falafel lacked taste and I thought I wasted my money today. Put your money to better use if you are in portland, especially when the place is full of amazing food trucks

Munk F.

Yelp
I would have given this place a zero of I could. PLEASE do NOT eat here. We chose the place for healthier choices and were very sorely disappointed, and for the record we are both avid lovers of Mediterranean cuisine. I have been down with what feels like mild food poisoning and haven't been able to eat at all for days. Everything meant to be hot was cold and tasteless, everything meant to be cold was lukewarm. The food wasn't tasty in the slightest and it was $$ to boot. My mother threw away her wrap after two bites. PLEASE. DO. NOT. EAT. HERE!
google avatar

Angelica A.

Yelp
Passed by Cascades Station complex on our way back to Vancouver, BC and hubby and I wanted to eat something healthy but filling before embarking on the 6hr journey going home. I found Baba's on Yelp and figured it was worth the try. We ordered chicken shawarma pita for hubby and spicy pork + chicken bowl for me. The hubby was okay with his pita, no complaints and no raves. I initially wanted to get the spicy pork but they didn't have enough so I had half spicy pork and half chicken with rice, hummus, lettuce, onions, salsa, eggplant and feta. I enjoyed my bowl -- it was filling yet felt healthier. The gentleman at the counter was helpful and friendly. Overall, it was a good experienc
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
I love the food, but they seem to close on a whim. This is the second time I've shown up to a closed restaurant without updating google.
google avatar

Nadia R.

Yelp
Very clean and very tasty meals. Fast service. But kinda small portions for the price.
google avatar

Elly Z.

Yelp
Three stars only for how polite the workers are and because the place was clean and it was a pleasant experience. The food however was bland, and did not taste authentic at all. If you're looking for an Americanized version of middle eastern food, (like Olive Garden for Italian) then this place is fine. If you're looking for traditional Mediterranean food, this is not the place for you.

Joshua S.

Yelp
I'm middle eastern and I will say this, the quality of the meats and sauce is excellent. What doesn't work is that, they barely put any feta cheese or sauce on it. They could try to be more friendly, and seeing there are health violations, and nothing been addressed about it makes me wonder how serious they are to keep this place alive. Also they were quite dead and didn't bother to clean the tables when customers left so there more dirty table than clean at the moment. They really could be amazing if they would make the sandwiches more fulfilling, and address the violations from the health inspection. I'll come back in a few months and see if improvements have been made as it's hard to find a place with quality meat so I'm going to be hopeful they listen.
google avatar

Jacinto H.

Yelp
Great place to eat. I go here once a week. The food is outstanding. The only reason that I am not giving it a 5 star is that there is always a huge line and only one employee. Please owner of Baba's, your food is great. Don't be cheap and please hire more help.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
A bit slow service but worth the wait. Had the lamb and beef pita and a side of Felafel. Staff was friendly as well. Wonderful and a do over.
google avatar

Adela B.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to this but unfortunately we walked in on a hot day and the A/C the entire building was out. Not a big deal as I figured the food would make up for it. However, they still had raw meat hanging in a 85+ degree store. The raw meat really put a damper on the selection and from that moment forward was hyper aware of everything else. I ordered The chicken plate and it was not cooked through and was luke warm. The toppings clearly had been sitting out in the elements and where wilted. Such an unfortunate experience. They should not be selling food in those conditions. So disappointed. My meal was terrible. I took a few bites and threw it out. The server didn't even say anything or apologize and was clearly annoyed that I was visibly not enjoying my experience. Overall a horrible experience.
google avatar

Derek F.

Yelp
You can customize a bowl with savory Mediterranean meats and sauces? YES PLEASE! I'll be back!
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Omg this place is to die for I just moved 10 min away and I will be here weekly lol. Everything is soooo good my mom had the falafel and I had a bite and it's delicious and the lamb/ beef was fabulous can't wait to come back and try again soon!!!
