The Most Australian of Australian Restaurants

"Sun-faded pots of roses and herbs are clustered round the entrance of this inner city warehouse restaurant, while inside, lace-topped tables are spread with the third-culture creations of kids who grew up in Sydney’s proudly multicultural outer suburbs. Roast chicken with toum, taramasalata (fish roe dip) on shokupan (a milk bread), a riff on a fried “seafood basket” with Italian mixed herbs; at Baba’s Place , it’s all a generous, playful and delicious love song to what it means to be Australian today." - Alexandra Carlton

We loved this place! We had the tamara toast and the beef tartare to start and they were both full of flavour. The cauliflower was also very nice! For the main we had the lamb which was delicious and the side of butter rice which unfortunately was the only disappointing part of our meal (would not recommend, felt plain in comparison to everything else!). The waitress recommended the sticky date for dessert and oh my god that is probably my new favourite dessert!! It was insanely good! Overall good service, our drinks just took a while to arrive is all. Great ambiance, had a lot of fun!

Fun casual eatery in a wonderfully fitted out warehouse space. It’s artsy and kitsch and every where you look has something to pique interest. Group menu was a good intro for first timers here like us. We added all the optional items. Would recommend when you’re in the mood for long lunch. I really enjoyed grazing on the opening dishes especially the yoghurt and dip with house bread. I’m not usually a bread person! The beef dishes were less memorable for me but full kudos for super tender beef cheeks - that’s patience and love there! Wholesome flavourful food. 3 hours later and we were finally onto the dessert. Good size given how full we all felt at this point! Really enjoyable experience for the occasion and I’d love to return.

Ahhhhhh i’ve been wanting to for here FOR AGESSSSS. And i finally did! Atmosphere felt so warm, cozy and welcoming buzzing with groups and groups of people. We opted to sit at the kitchen, where we saw food made in action. I do gotta say they sure know how to run a kitchen, it was spotless, and well managed. Food on the other hand was just as good. We had the tarama toast. Chefs kiss, didn’t think i’d like it but it was mwah loved it. Ans then we had the chicken. Oh my the chicken was cooked and seasoned to absolute perfection, and the chipsssss. Gosh the chipppsssss were outstanding. Crispy and golden on the outside and soft on the inside. Absolutely will be coming back.

The place is in the warehouse area of Marrickville closer to Sydenham train station. Decor and atmosphere is like old style home with a beautifully photo wall and lovely old furniture. Food is delicious. I was too busy eating to take photos of it all Staff were very friendly and helpful by explaining the menu.

I’d like to leave a balanced review. My two-star rating isn’t because the food was completely bad, but rather because it didn’t really suit my taste. Also, a few dishes felt a bit different from what was described on the menu. 1. The toast was quite ordinary, mainly just the taste of spread and cucumber. 2. Yogurt mixed with chickpeas. 3. The beef tartare had a lot of corn and nuts in it, to the point that I couldn’t really taste any beef. 4. The seafood salad had almost no octopus in it, the portion was very small. 5. The lamb chops tasted about the same as something I could make at home. 6. The “butter rice” felt more like mashed potatoes or something similar. Overall, the flavors and textures were repetitive, and the dishes were quite expensive for what they offered.

Original, innovative cooking with excellent flavour and texture combinations results in delicious food coming to our table. Add the quirky venue and fit out, plus friendly knowledgable staff and it made for a superb eating. Nick and his wine list are both outstanding! It’s a clever, inclusive, diverse list that covers all bases andt budgets. I’ll be raving about last night to everyone for a while. Bravo team Baba’s, and thank you!

I would give a rating closer to 3.5 stars. Overall loved the atmosphere of the place, but found some of the dishes to be lacking. Ordered the set menu, the yoghurt dish was okay, but a bit bland in flavour compared to the other punchier dishes like the cuttlefish salad and cucumber dish. Moving on the mains, not sure about the potato side dish with rice and peas underneath fried potatoes. The inclusion of peas and the tomato based sauce was a bit jarring, it felt like something that was put together with leftovers . The beef cheek was nice and tender, but a brown sauce might have made it more savoury vs the green herby sauce which although fresh, didn’t quite hit the spot. Service was good, as our water was consistently topped up. Only thing I was a bit disappointed about was that in the booking I had specifically requested a candle for the dessert (I had booked under birthday celebration) but didn’t get one once the dessert had came out. Not a big deal, but perhaps a note for improved attention to detail or missed communication (I noticed several other tables with a candle). Overall, loved the vibe of the place. Might order a la carte next time instead of the set menu though!

The food was unbelievable that me and my friend could not stop talking about coming back here, its such a homey vibe. From the starters to the desserts we were just blown of how amazing each dish is. I would 100% recommend dining here. I also just wanna thank ⭐️ Liz ⭐️ she had done and made all this possible for us, thank you for helping us fill our hungry bellies.
