"An outstanding property in a quiet residential section of Ipanema, whose Italian name (“babbo” is a colloquial Italian word for “dad”) provides an insight into the cuisine served here, a fusion of Italian and “carioca” dishes conjured up by chef Elia Schramm. One of the most popular eateries in the area, Babbo Osteria pays homage to the chef's father, and brings childhood memories and family influences to the cooking on offer. One of the dining rooms, decorated with ornaments reminiscent of a traditional Italian “osteria”, provides the backdrop for handmade pasta dishes such as Uova Pepenara (tagliolini served with small cubes of bacon and a creamy soft egg) – the chef's version of the classic carbonara. Main courses include the “filetto”, a medallion served with a delicious pepper sauce and golden gnocchi, as well as desserts in the purest Italian style, such as tiramisù and a perfect combination of pistachio and lime!" - Michelin Inspector

A charming and fancy Italian restaurant, with good service overall. We were warmly welcomed, but we waited long before anyone took our order, and we even had to call someone twice - to give us menus and to take our first order. About the food, all the plates we ordered were very flavoursome, though a bit heavy on the stomach (the gnocchi with truffle sauce and the appetizer with eggplant and cheese, for instance). It’s nice that the waiters grate the cheese before you, so you can say the amount desired; nice experience! Furthermore, the place itself is very traditionally decorated, has a vintage and antique style, which is attractive and cosy. Overall, it’s a good place (a bit expensive, but worth it), but the staff could be a bit more attentive.

The restaurant is in a beautiful old house, the food is really great, but the service and atmosphere were a disaster. We waited half hour for a table, then 10 minutes for menus, it took 15 minutes for Parmesan cheese to be gra ted on main dish which was cold by then, drinks were not poured or empty bottles picked up, not once were we asked if we need anything, the espresso arrived after the dessert, the checkout took forever, no thank you or a smile. The atmosphere was like a busy noisy bus station with the waitress running around like mad. I almost felt sorry for the waiters. There are better options for good Italian food in Rio de Janeiro.

Super nice staff really good food. Recommend getting a reservation or arriving early as they have room every night for walk-in’s but it fills up fast and there’s long waitlist lines.

Absolutely delicious meal. The octopus secondi (see photo) was one of the best octopus dishes I've ever had. The pancheta really bolstered the flavour and the octopus was grilled perfectly. The service was super friendly. Only minor criticism is that the caprese starter could have more basil and mozzarella, however the flavours were great.

Really good Italian food; all dishes that we ordered were very tasty. There are menu in English although staff don’t speak English. Friendly service. Price is high but reasonable for food quality. Red wine by glasses were good too. Mocktails were plenty and good. Beautiful casa. One of the best meals in Rio for us. Casual and good vibes.

Nice food quality and great taste with reasonable price. I like salmon tartare the most. Apologize for fix the review again today we just go again without reservation and we came as you suggested to wait 40 mins before restuarant open at 7pm. When we arrived at 6pm and sat outside for almost 30 mins, many of your staffs came to smoke and we understand that this area people can smoke so we moved to sit on the chair on the balcony area because we have no choice and no area to wait. Suddently one of your staff came to chase us out by claiming that the table was set, cannot be sit. That is not good experience at all!! So we decide to go another place where welcome us.

Visited in June 2024. Brazil. Rio de Janeiro. We were craving pasta, so we went for an Italian restaurant. We found this place with the highest reviews in our area. The interior is pretty simple, the tables are close together, and it was loud and bustling with customers. It’s always nice to see a place packed, it usually means the food is good. Food: We got a salmon tartare for an appetizer. The salmon was so tender and the sauce balanced perfectly with the fish, it didn’t overpower it, it actually enhanced the flavor. The fresh radish was a nice touch. For our main courses, we had the lemon pasta with scallops and the nero pasta with octopus. Both pastas were cooked perfectly. The pasta itself was cooked just right – elastic, soft, and salty. There was a lot of sauce, which coated the noodles, and the protein was cooked perfectly - the scallop and the octopus were both cooked perfectly. Service: The service was good. The waiters didn’t speak English, but we were able to communicate with gestures. The pasta took a while to come out, we were pretty hungry after the appetizer. Overall, it was a decent service. Overall: We had a great experience. This restaurant is on the pricier side, but you get quality food. If you’re craving Italy, I recommend enjoying their flavors.

Best Italian food I had in Rio! Melt in your mouth perfection. The ragú was some of the best we’ve ever had. The shrimp pumpkin was incredible. Highly recommend!
