Hamptons Restaurants Rally to Do Takeout in Unusually Busy Spring Season | Eater NY

"I found Babette’s to be a largely organic, celebrity-frequented spot whose owner, Barbara Layton, reported doing good business selling lots of juices and healthy fare as people seek to strengthen their immune systems; she also emphasized that many New Yorkers who patronize the restaurant have been loyal customers for years and argued that everyone deserves a safe place to come to." - Beth Landman

Google
This seems to be the most busy brunch / lunch spot in town. We were visiting for for the afternoon and enjoyed the grilled cheese, BLT, and ham and goat cheese sandwich.

Ash B.

Google
Every bite here is tasty! A great spot for a cozy breakfast or lunch. Good options for vegetarians. Warm and friendly staff. Plus gourmet snacks like cheeses, nuts, crackers, and cookies are available for sale!

Google
I could not possibly say enough good things about Babette’s!! I had the best BLT of my life there this week! Turkey BLT with avocado, you’ve got to try it. Their staff was friendly and helpful, and they have good GF options! I don’t live anywhere nearby but my husband and I will be making a point of returning, and not just because we were on our honeymoon and this place now holds sentimental value. Such good food!

Rebekah C.

Google
Delightful dining experience! The staff give off a "family" vibe - having fun while working together! Food was delicious and reasonably priced. I'm not local but will visit again when I'm in the area!

Google
DELICIOUS!! We stopped in during a quick trip to Millbrook! Had the broccoli, leek and cheddar frittata and the Brie & arugula melt with balsamic onion, jam with turkey! Delicious !!

Google
Can we just talk about the most delicious Cubano sandwich I’ve ever had in my life for a moment? Wow. I don’t know what they do to this but it is elevated with a bit of spice, amazing high quality cheese…and the bread. This is my 3rd stop in Babette’s in 5 days! And every day gets better! And then there is the team that works there - so friendly, efficient, helpful! And they remember their customers. One by one I watch people walk in, greeted by name or even their order. Everything in here is perfect. The best part of my stay in Millbrook thus far….and that is saying a lot for such a charming town.

Jason G.

Google
The sign in the window says open till 5pm. I missed them yesterday so I made it a point to get here early enough to get coffee I biked here for about an hour only to find out the sign in the window is wrong and they are closed. Apparently they closed at 4 and the window sign was wrong. I look forward to trying their lattes and seeing their sign updated and maybe changing my review Please update your sign so people don’t make plans based on wrong information. Thank you EDIT Here we are 4 months later and they have closed for 2 weeks and didn’t update their google listing Don’t care about your google listing? Well then you won’t care about this review!!!

Google
Pictures do no justice to how great this place is. My wife and I go out of our way to come here even for a quick bite. Burritos, sandwiches, lasagna, etc. top notch!! service is great and the people who make it all happen are genuine. Hope Babette’s continues to thrive.

Yelp
I stopped into Babette's this morning to grab a quick breakfast before I went for a walk In Millbrook's lovely tribute Park. It seems like a regular spot for locals as staff seemed quite familiar with many of their customers. Their avocado toast was top notch... Perfectly ripe avocado on multi grain bread with sprouts and tomato. Coffee was excellent. They have indoor and outdoor seating. And a large menu to choose from.

Yelp
Hands down the best breakfast and lunch in Millbrook! I recently came here for breakfast and was delighted with the fine taste of my breakfast; simple scrambled eggs done just so on whole grain toast and a blueberry muffins to go. This is a fine eating place where everything is cooked to order. It is a small space with a few tables- but early on a weekday morning. There was no problem getting served. The locals know that it is indeed a hidden gem. Would return here even if it meant driving out of my way! As an aside-the crowd of millbrook is well-heeled and sophisticated and they know about quality food. This is a small town with a very quaint but elegant feel ! Some of the other towns in the county are more crowded and have an industrial , forgone feel.

Ben S.

Yelp
This is my daily go-to. The ambience is lovely and the food, both what's freshly prepared and the pre-prepared items to take home, and the service, are fantastic. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Nestled within the heart of Millbrook, Babettes is everything you could want in a neighborhood cafe. Their breakfast options are numerous, from light to hearty. The same is true for their lunch menu, with ever-changing specials. No matter whether you come in during the morning or afternoon, you are not leaving without one of their excellent pastries. If you are in Millbrook during the day, it would be a real missed opportunity if you did not visit.

Yelp
Sept 2022, came here with friends after visiting the Orvis Game Fair. What a cute town. Babette's sandwich was DELICIOUS. The inside of Babette's was small with a nice amount of tables. However, we decided to sit outside since it was such a beautiful day. I shared the Turkey BLT with my friend. The beacon on the sandwich was crispy and the Turkey and lettuce was fresh. The sandwich was DELICIOUS. However, they did forget to put the pickle on the side. If we are ever in the town again we will definitely stop in for a quick bite.

Yelp
Well, for starters I will apologize for not posting photos. I was with a hungry crowd at peek lunchtime on a Sunday. I am not from the area and spent the morning taking grandchild to Trevor Zoo, it was a 1hour 25 minute trip and I will return sans grandchild and zoo to enjoy this wonderful place. Heirloom tomato, turkey BLT, Brie with turkey sandwiches were otherworldly and the 3 year old practically inhaled his BBQ chicken quesadilla! Everything prepared with freshest local ingredients with incredible attention to detail for maximum flavor. Totally worth any weight and/or road-trip

Holly B.

Yelp
My favorite stop in Millbrook NY on Franklin Avenue. The best sandwiches and Chai Latte. Yum!

Yelp
Popped in today and ordered the Brie, cranberry, arugula melt (I added Turkey) to go. I have to tell you something. It's HOURS LATER and I'm literally still thinking of that sandwich. Absolutely HEAVENLY!! Perfection. Reasonably priced and super sweet staff as well. Clean and happy place. Go! You will NOT be disappointed!

David G.

Yelp
First time visit to Babette and really enjoyed it. The turkey Reuben was excellent... beautifully browned and a great balance of the ingredients ... generous, actually enough for 2 people but finished it because it was so delicious! Did I mention the pie? The dessert selection is huge but I kept looking at the strawberry rhubarb blueberry cherry pie that just came out of the oven! Sadly, single pieces are not offered, but I took a chance and brought the pie home. This is one of the the best pies I've had in my 68 years on the planet! NOT TOO SWEET and a flakey, perfectly browned crust...even on the bottom; my partner and I had it for dessert last night, and with coffee just now again after breakfast, slightly warmed in the toaster oven!!! Did we eat almost half a pie? The wait staff were wonderful and accommodating and said that the pie freezes well.... pretty sureI I won't be finding out if that's accurate!!! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy Babette's as much as I did!!

Yelp
A lovely little place set in the heart of Millbrook New York right on Main Street. Quaint and cute. Perfect for fresh scones and muffins, sandwiches and breakfast and of course delicious coffee. Very friendly staff and quick service. If you're passing through you must stop bye. I had an egg and bacon and cheese on a baguette bread, delicious. Also ordered the French toast and my friend said it was delicious. I had a fresh bake blueberry scone crispy and fresh

Victoria W.

Yelp
Brie, Arugula, Basalmic Onion Jam Melt is delicious, wonderful homemade treats, great coffees and friendly service.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
My go-to for a really great cup of coffee, a delicious scone or a flavorful frittata! Healthy options for lunch too! quinoa and kale salads, good soups, veggie quesadillas.

trish j.

Yelp
Simply the best , local place with great baked goods coffees and lunch items Owners are on site all the time and it shows

Melissa K.

Yelp
August 27th severe tornado warnings with Millbrook at the center began posting on emergency services everywhere - advised drivers to pull over immediately and take shelter, preferably in a basement. We dashed out of our car in the pouring rain to ask for help and shelter. The two girls said they were closing & told us to go to Stewarts across the street.

Yelp
Hands down best quinoa salad I've ever had. We needed a quick bite before our winery tour and the hotel guide suggested Babette's on a long list of cafés with outdoor seating. On the outside, it looks like any standard coffee shop / café, but the food was definitely a step up. The bf and I split a smoked salmon BLT and sides of quinoa salad and mac & cheese. The sandwich was fairly standard: bacon was crispy without being too crunchy. The salmon had enough body and smokiness that added a layer of complexity to the American favorite. The sandwich as a whole was a little thinner than I would've liked, but it was of good quality. The mac and cheese was disappointing. We appreciate the fact that it was made with real cheese, but the portion was underwhelming for the price. The quinoa was the complete opposite, so fresh, perfect textures, and we could not get enough of it. The kale was prepared properly (massaged) and it was nicely dressed: red wine vinegar was the only ingredient I could get out of the cook. We sampled their cookies too. We still don't know what is in the signature, but it was chewy, sweet, ad a great finish to the meal. The lemon cookie had a lot of zest, so if you're not a fan of that, be wary. The double chocolate was my least favorite of the three, but it still held its own. I would've liked a few more chocolate chips though. All in all, Babette's is great if you want high-quality, casual cafe food. Make sure to grab the table outside for a nice meal in the quiet village.

Yelp
Fresh made everything! I've had yummy everything every time I've popped in. Tuna Sandwich was good but the Pickle tickled my heart. ;D The bonus was after having bought cheese from the Farmer's market, they sold me a frozen baguette to bake at home. ~super easy. & great Iced Coffee!

Yelp
We stumbled upon Babette's kitchen yesterday. My husband ordered a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit, I had a vegetarian hash breakfast with a biscuit. The biscuits are to die for - melt in your mouth, everything a biscuit should be. The food was delivious !! The staff was friendly. Highly recommend this spot, we look forward to going back next time we are in the area!

Carlisle S.

Yelp
Millbrook is so happy to have Babette's back open after a brief COVID-19 closing. In addition to the menu, they are also offering special menus twice a week where you can order prepared foods ahead of time and pick up on specific days. I am vegetarian and Babette's has lots of vegetarian and vegan options. They use incredibly fresh and often organic ingredients. I must say that for breakfast, their Scrambled Eggs cannot be beat! They are so fluffy and flavorful with buttery deliciousness. For lunch, the veggie burger is my go-to must-have. From the prepared foods, I have to mention the Seasonal Pasta Salad. I'm not even a pasta salad fan but this is the best I've ever had. The last one I got had fresh asparagus, peas and shiitake mushrooms tossed with a super light lemon & olive oil dressing. Another great dish I loved was the Garlicky Kale and Broccoli. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked to al dente perfection. They're also known for their baked goods so be sure to pick some up. The Peach Blueberry Crisp is always a fav. Be sure to stop by or order ahead from Babette's when you're in Millbrook!

Richard M.

Yelp
Quaint little place with extremely pleasant staff and most important excellent food. I visit Babette's Kitchen often. If you have not then you are missing out on something special!

Yelp
Just had one of the best but's of my life. Seeded tomatoes, lettuce without hard spine, so much bacon and a perfect light gold on the toast. I'd show a picture but was moved to write this review only after gobbling it down. Half is enough for a regular appetite. I shared mine

Alixandra E.

Yelp
There's not much choice for casual eating out in Millbrook, but it's a pretty cute place and a decent choice for food. The atmosphere is nice and and the people working there are very friendly. The prices are surprisingly steep for the portions they give you and the location. I'd expect this sort of thing in Manhattan, but not a little village in upstate New York. I ordered the Veggie Wrap ($9.50), which was a decent size, but my boyfriend got the meatloaf ($7) and it could easily have fit in his hand. Their mac'n'cheese ($6) was good, but swimming in oil. Overall, it's cute but pricey.

Yelp
The food was quite good. What put us off was being hustled out of there impolitely when we had just been served our (first) cup of coffee after a brunch. Were there about 45 minutes, max and our coffees were still steaming when hostess approached us and said that they really needed the table and could we please go? Daughter was in bathroom at the time and, again, we had not lingered at all. Coffee was still hot. Kind of the opposite of what you want when you think weekend brunch. "Eat up and beat it already, will ya?"

Yelp
Babette's is a five star place when it comes to food -- it's delicious. Always. But their incredibly overpriced coffee is beyond poor. The three stars I gave them is kind of a combo of the two extremes. It's sad, really, because they could do so much better with their coffee if they tried even a little. If you are a coffee snob (and if you are not, you're lucky because you'll be fine with any coffee) -- in other words you want your coffee fresh roasted and brewed carefully, don't order any coffee drink at Babette's. They use pre-packaged pods of espresso--God knows where or when it was roasted and ground-- and their regular brewed coffee has poor flavor and is weak. I am a fan of an occasional afternoon latte. I like the strong coffee taste inside the creamy microfoam of well steamed milk. At Babette's no one seems to have been trained to use the machine, and they use the steamer to merely heat up milk and mix it with the not-so-good espresso. And they charge more than anyone else in the region, or New York. So my advice -- stop off for an incredible lunch or breakfast. You'll pay through the nose but it WILL taste amazing. Drink water (served in very small plastic cups, unfortunately) or iced tea. Skip the coffee.

Olivia F.

Yelp
This place is very cute! We had the Tuna Melt and the Smoked Salmon BLT. The service was fast and it was delicious. There's plenty of options from salads to sandwiches. We also got cookies and the raspberry bear claws to go. They were also great. Perfect place to stop in for lunch!
google avatar

O. D.

Yelp
Was there last Sunday, had a salad with a quiche - delicious! Salad was extra crispy, fresh and with perfect vinegar dressing. Tasty and fresh. Iced coffee was very nice too. I liked the place and the decor. I will definitely include this place as a "food destination" when we will be around that area.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Overpriced. Great lox. Fairly slow service.
google avatar

Tia T.

Yelp
So my bf had to take the driver's test and the only place we could schedule it was Millbrook. We stopped in a Babette's for a morning coffee and muffin...my consolation prize for having to take a day off from work to take my 30-something bf to the DMV. I was surprised that Babette's had such a great on-trend menu...generally a rarity outside of metro areas. The service was super friendly. My coffee was tasty, not overly acidic or too strong; a perfect medium body. The muffin was delicious, it was a coffee cake muffin...I've always wanted coffee cake in muffin form! It's too bad the bf passed the driver's test because I would love to go back to try the lunch menu!
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
a particular favorite of ours. We go for breakfast brunch, but you can't go wrong with prepared take away dishes either - meatloaf and chicken pot pie, salads, etc. Everything is really fresh and, it's easy to see (and taste!), prepared with care and love. Staff is super friendly. Great coffee and espresso (I usually go with the red eye). I also get the egg, cheese, and sausage or bacon biscuit - homemade biscuits! Plus fresh OJ, croissants, and all kinds of great sweet treats. Gotta go!
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
A bit pricey but well with it. A nice place with great food and friendly staff. Eat outside of the weather permits. Salad and veggie burgers are very very good.

Nicole R.

Yelp
My favorite spot for a chai latte mid morning or for turkey chili or the amazing BLT for lunch. A must visit if you are in Millbrook.

Mike T.

Yelp
Have eaten at Babettes Kitchen several times. The food is fresh, and innovative. Great coffee. Staff is friendly and very helpful. My wife and I were taking pictures of each other and one of the staff spontaneously offered to take a picture of us. Best breakfast lunch in Millbrook.
google avatar

Kristina B.

Yelp
Lots of charm to this cafe...my bf's corned beef sandwich was flavorful and good. My choice was the soup/half sandwich combo--almost 10 bucks...butternut squash soup--made w/rather a heavy hand with the ginger. The 1/2 tuna salad sandwich was bland, seemed like it was scooped out of the can and onto the bread. With the cappuccino--I had to add cream to tone down the super strong taste of the coffee--it was $14! Charm w/o the substance to back it up, I'm sorry to say.
google avatar

Ann M.

Yelp
Had lunch there on Saturday after biking the Duchess Rail Trail--veggie burgers and potato salad with an Arnold Palmer. Everything was excellent. We were really happy with our meal. And we bought a loaf of the banana coconut blueberry bread to take home; it's outstanding. I look forward to going back.

Eliza E.

Yelp
When I die, I want to be buried in a vat of Babette's lemon tart filling. So lemony. So luxuriously creamy. Not that yellow-flavored gelatinous goo that so often masquerades as a lemon tart.
google avatar

Amika B.

Yelp
Love this cozy little place! We had the Cuban sandwich and it blew our minds! Their little treats are so delicious as well! We will be back again!

Ronald G.

Yelp
The perfect, friendly village cafe. Great food and coffee always served with a big smile.

cece z.

Yelp
Amazing selection of delicious vegetarian foods. Lentil and spinach salad, marinated veggies, sesame noodles and veggie burger. Great pies and muffins and coffee!

Jackie V.

Yelp
Okay, I admit this place is super-cute and the owners are really friendly but being a college student on a budget keeps me away. The coffee is good but nothing you can't make at home for a fraction of the cost and the food is pretty overrated but I can appreciate that the it is fresh and not processed . Millbrook's small businesses come and go quickly so that's a good reason for me to pop in there for lunch or a cup of coffee every so often but that's about it.
google avatar

Alexandria L.

Yelp
Great people and atmosphere however the food is too pricey. I get that it's Millbrook but it's not Manhattan. $12 for a tomato and mozzarella salad is just ridiculous and it didn't even taste good. It tasted sweet as if sugar was added. Very disappointed in this place.
google avatar

Vanessa T.

Yelp
A bit expensive, but good food! I only go to Babettes once in a while - I would be broke if I went as often as I would like... The sandwich's are great- My favorite is the veggie with tapenade, hummus and goat cheese. The also have really good lemon bars but they are $3 each. The place is packed on Saturday and Sunday mornings and there is not much space to sit or stand for that matter. I really don't think the coffee or espresso is up to par ....you can get better coffee across the street at the deli!

Ben C.

Yelp
No one is nice there food sits out for hours and forget the breakfast sandwiches sitting on top of the counter microwaved to order

Laura S.

Yelp
My favorite spot to come in Millbrook for breakfast or lunch - very cute place with tables inside and out on the sidewalk with A bustling atmosphere and great energy...food is always fresh and delicious...only reason I gave it 4 stars is the staff is either super friendly or super not (and sometimes the very same person who was friendly the day before). Ive been coming in just about every weekend every day I'm in town this summer and still kind of the same. Not sure, but I'm just hoping for a little more consistency in the warmth and friendliness from this place that exudes it in everything else they do...
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Nice setup inside. Girls behind the counter are nice. The baked goods are a real treat! That's about all the praise it gets. Very pricey, but the menu selection offers many varieties. The cooking is ok. Food tasted bland and coffee was just OK.

S S.

Yelp
Breakfast, lunch & dessert...It's all good! Babette is a wonderful place to start your day. Two of my favorites at breakfast are the cranberry or cherry scones and/or the steel cut oats. Almost forgot, take a loaf of the zucchini raspberry bread home for the next day's breakfast. You won't be sorry. Back to the scones though - I can't even begin to describe how good they are. You have to try one or again, take one for the road. My favorite lunch sandwich is the BLT. My mouth is watering just thinking of it. My better half is a vegetarian and loves the veggie burgers on a ciabatta roll. And they have more than just sandwiches, I just cant get past the BLT. And finally... the desserts. Slices of mixed fruit pies/bars, key lime bars, Texas blondie cake, the list goes on... best bakers in the Hudson Valley!!
google avatar

Ed S.

Yelp
Great bakery, breakfast, soup and sandwich place. Only 6 or 7 tables but the food never disappoints. Did I mention the bakery was good?! Yum. Good coffee and they use a lot of locally grown/produced food. Did I mention the bakery was Great!?

Mary Beth D.

Yelp
We've been several times for late morning breakfast or lunch. Never fails to deliver, even to two fussy 12-year olds. Surprising range of offerings for a small place. Exceptional biscuits, delicious soups, salads, coffee, quesadillas, and sandwiches. Delicious baked goods. Killer bear claw. Run, don't walk.

Najolean C.

Yelp
Just tried this place on Saturday. It really represents what other small eateries and cafes should strive for: a clean, charming setting with freshly prepared, flavorful food that is served by a competent and friendly staff. Babette's is just wonderful. I enjoyed a BLT sandwich, and it was perhaps one of the best I've ever had. Their coffees, teas, and drinks are so refreshing! I had an iced chai latte and absolutely loved it. The atmosphere is distinctly sunny and upbeat, and the window seating is adorable. This place is a perfect way to end a weekend morning spent perusing the many lovely features of Millbrook. If it gets crowded (it's a rather petite space), just get your food to go. It will be just as tasty!

Teddy D.

Yelp
I think I came here once on a bad day, so didn't think much of the place. Since I started going again it has been a very pleasant experience. All the food and drinks are great, and they change up their daily selections very often.

Sonika H.

Yelp
Really love how cute this place is and all of our food was fresh, well made, and delicious. If only we could find this kind of spot in NYC in every corner. Thanks for a wonderful meal :)
