"The Austin Tex-Mex mini-chain better known as Baby A’s unceremoniously closed down its Barton Springs location in late October, as reported by Austin Business Journal. A rep for the company didn’t provide a reason for the shutter to the publication, but it reported that its alcohol sales — including the notorious Purple Rita — have been decreasing in recent years. Eater has reached out for more information. It opened in 1981, and its other two locations — in East Riverside and the Arboretum — remain open." - Nadia Chaudhury

Good food and great portions. We got the combo fajita and it served 4 easily. Bacon and chicken was a little bit salty but that's alright because it still tasted good. Very good ambiance and I would like to come back for more of the menu!

My girlfriend has been wanting to go try the famous purple marg so we went and had lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The drinks: We both started with a purple marg, I wasn’t a huge fan of the flavor, neither was my gf but it grew on her. For my second drink I got a coconut marg which was very good, if you like coconut I highly recommend. The food: The chips and salsa you start with are good, the chips are nice and light- not too hard and crispy. I got the “cowboy enchiladas” which is carne guisada enchiladas (which I’ve never had or even seen as an option) and they were very good, probably some of the best enchiladas I’ve ever had, I definitely recommend getting these!! My gf got the Al pastor tacos which she said were also good and that she was pleasantly surprised. We did take our dog with us and sat on the patio, so they are dog friendly. But warning some of the patio area gets a lot of sunlight (we had to change tables cuz I could feel the sunburn😂) Our total for 4 margaritas and 2 entrees with tip was around $100. Will definitely be back

Baby A’s does not disappoint! Home of the (frozen) Purple Rita! It was just perfect. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for delicious Mexican food. Their fast and friendly service is definitely a plus! Indoor and outdoor dining available. I’ve gone twice already and will definitely be returning as a regular!

Google
Yum yum Mexican food!!! I love this place and it is a notch above many other Mexican places. First off the salsa is so good. It’s spicy, garlicky and you can’t stop eating it. I dipped everything I could in that little salsa bowl and yes it was good. The baby A soup is tasty as any other tortilla soup would taste like. Except it has a lot more chicken, tender shredded chicken topped off with a slice of avocado. I like it, warms me right up today. The second half of the soup combo is a nice healthy side of Spanish rice with a taco. I picked puffy taco with chicken. It’s good but the puffy taco is little dense than I like. But all and all it is still good. Happy eating.

I went there for dinner and there was nobody at counter first. Language is an issue and somehow the waitress didnt understand what I was asking. Took lot of time to get refill on chips. The food was below the average. Drink was good especially purple rita 😋

Google
This place is located less than a mile from Barton Springs pool. I say that because we went in on a Saturday after lightning closed down the pool. They were not prepared for the rush of people, and the first bartender on duty lacked a little something. We were ready to leave. THEN Doug showed up and we stayed for about another hour. His service was great. He was engaging, and the drinks were amazing. This was our first time ever going to Baby A's, but we've already planned to return for date night real soon.

I lived in Austin from 2013 to 2019 and Baby A's was alwaysss my favorite. I visited my family last week and insisted we go to Baby A's for a Tex-Mex fix. The food was perfect, 10/10, no complaints. But the service?? Horrible. We waited 10 minutes and no one took our drink order so my dad flagged a nearby waitress down. We obviously weren't her section and she did not bother to hide how much she did not want to help us. When our actual waitress came by, she was equally as unfriendly and rude. We felt extremely unwelcome, as if we were a burden on the waitresses. I will not return to this location ever again and I will encourage others to try Baby A's other locations, perhaps they would be friendlier.

Google
Great enchiladas, salsa, and margaritas. Awesome Austin staple. Been going since 1990 on Barton Springs!! Still the same

Yelp
Baby A's!!! #iykyk, amiright? But seriously, the Purple Rita is one for the books! Here's what's weird and kinda sad, as I write this review, I'm learning this location has closed according to a sign on their door. The sign directs folks to their other locations. This was the flagship! Since the 80s. Booooooo!!!!!! So so glad I was able to swing by one last time during ACL. The taco salad and cheese enchiladas we had were good too. Wow.

Rich M.

Yelp
I read that Baby-A's has closed. I update my review accordingly. Truth is, we only came to Baby-A's to get a "Purple" and hang out. The food was sometimes OK but most of the time it was terrible. Good riddance. Now, all I want is the recipe/process to make a purple.

John Michael D.

Yelp
Baby A's is a must-visit in Austin, especially if you're seeking the old Austin vibe. They serve some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. The shrimp enchilada goes nuts! The purple margarita is a game changer. The staff are friendly & professional, and the restaurant is always clean. My only feedback is that I wish there was a patio. 10/10! Don't listen to the fake news in those other comments.

Sean R.

Yelp
On a beautiful Texas night, the patios at Baby A's rightfully see themselves full of college students as far as the eye can see. And for good reason, the drinks are cheap and strong, and the fresh made chips will keep you satisfied as you wait for your food. I kept my order simple, the famous purple rita to start and a baby changa to make sure said rita didn't stop me from getting home. One of the reasons this drink is likely as famous as it is, is probably because the primary ingredient seems to be everclear. Strong and well worth the price tag if that's your goal for the night, personally I was fine with a small sip. The baby changa was exactly as advertised, I only wish it came with more sauce. The primary downside of this being a popular spot to eat is that the service did take quite a bit longer than expected. I recommend getting here earlier than you think to keep yourself a priority.

Georgina G.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite spots in Austin because it has been consistently reliable over the years! If you're looking for a restaurant where you don't need to make reservations and can still enjoy a great meal on the go, this is the place for you. The outdoor patio is fantastic for people-watching and can accommodate large groups! Be sure to try their flight of margaritas, and if you're feeling adventurous, go for the purple margarita. Just make sure you have a designated driver with you, as those cocktails can really hit hard by the end of your meal!

Thania M.

Yelp
Quick stop into Baby A's while we were awaiting our show at the Zack Theatre. What a better spot than being on Barton spring, enjoying the sounds and vibe that Austin has to offer. We were seated right away. We advised our waiter that we were going to be ordering and leaving as we had a performance to attend, and he obliged and provided everything immediately for us. The nachos were outstanding , not your typical nachos, but very well presented each chip had a little bit of the refried bean fajita and then all the fixings on the side which was perfect. No soggy chips, Mexican Martini top notch less than 40 bucks two martinis one order of nachos You get warm chips and salsa as you're seated. We have been coming here for over 2 decades and never disappoints. Well done!!

Mark P.

Yelp
41$ for a purple margarita and a burrito Love this place, but y'all need to come down on the price please! Great service and the waiters are always friendly and amazing and the food is great Definitely visit this place:)

Emily K.

Yelp
Fun location especially to pregame ACL. The food is pretty average. The Baby A's margarita was underwhelming. Not big or strong for the price and sort of bland. The staff are also a little unbending and were weird about accomodating our group on the patio out of the sun. Will probably be back to pregame ACL in the future but that's about it.

Emily M.

Yelp
Come for the purple Margs, stay for a good time! Andrea took great care of us! Best happy hour around!

Stormy B.

Yelp
This place had paid parking for ACL but failed to mention you can't leave the lot until 11 pm. Wouldn't let us out even when we had a 7 month old with us. The manager said if said on our parking ticket but it didn't say anything at all. Be safe manager and staff don't care

Paul S.

Yelp
Always good after ACL Fest: cowboy enchiladas stuffed with carne guisada, topped with a layer of chile con queso

Zammy V.

Yelp
Tortilla soup done perfecto! They have the best tortilla soup we've found. Haven't tried anything else, but if they're as proper as the soup, it's real, good. We just get the soup and go. We don't care about Television, Sports or drinking at a bar, but seems lots of people do. Seems the place could use a periodic makeover, it seems rather high trafficked and a bit outdated, but at least they painted the exterior and finally got a new sign. Try the tortilla soup it's the best Comfort Food.

Julie S.

Yelp
I came here on a stop during a brunch walking tour while visiting Austin, and I am seriously disappointed that I wasted one of my (few, precious) meals here! The breakfast taco was nothing special, and honestly their "famous" purple margarita must be famous for being terrible. I really really did not like it - I don't know if it was the color messing with my head, but it tasted like cough medicine to me! Blegh! Also who makes their margaritas with Everclear?! The fruity slushy drinks like the mango and strawberry were much better in my opinion. Also the ambiance leaves much to be desired, the place looks like it is haphazardly designed and falling into disrepair. The chips were average and the salsa was decent. The service was good, so I will give a generous 2 stars instead of 1!

Mosette B.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin ! The food is amazing and the menu options are unique and not the same ol' thing you're use to seeing at Mexican restaurants. I love the outdoor seating!

Ariana A.

Yelp
If I could give this place zero stars I would. We were excited to come and celebrate a friends 21st birthday by trying the viral "Purple Ritas". Upon walking in we were greeted and sat immediately but the restaurant reeked. We ordered our drinks and were rushed to order our food. The food was alright nothing to write home about, one mistake was made on our order and the server was not very happy to tend to us and fix it, leaving an extra charge for something we never received. Our waiter ruined the whole experience for us and I understand some people have bad days but don't take it out on your clientele. Very disappointed with this place will not be returning they need some "happier campers"working here.

Jason D.

Yelp
A decent meal, at Austin in prices. I don't live here, as you may have gathered from my location. I've been twice and my experience was the same both times. It is situated near Zilker, and has. A good central location. The staff work hard, and they've been good through both of my meals here, they stay busy. They're actually the reason I can keep a solid three overall. Service is a huge part of everyone's experience. Coming from an industry where service is a key factor, it's on the top of my list when I interact with different businesses. You can see the pics, they are solid plates of food. Quantity is good. No complaints on the portions. There isn't a wow factor for flavors or taste. I can't say that I crave anything, or that there's a standout dish I've had here. This is a solid post drinking, festival, or other kind of joint. If it was open at 2am, and I was nearby, I'd hit it for a filler. But I wouldn't come here as a must go when I visit the A. I'm sure I will be back, as I have friends that have a historical connection to this joint. Three isn't a bad thing, three is solid. Check it out, see what ya think.

Yelp
I will keep this short. The food here is simply not that great. The beans and rice leave a lot to be desired. The tacos I had (forget what they were) were pretty bland, same with the salsa. Free chips are always a plus at a restaurant. The purple margarita though.... it will do the job it sets out to do. Be aware that she is dangerous... and it also doesn't taste the best... like cold alcohol and something else that I couldn't put my finger on.

Mike E.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Can't go wrong with strong margaritas and some good Tex Mex. The purple margaritas are an absolute legend of Austin! Service: 5/5 We were seated quickly and our waiter checked in on us several times through the evening. Environment: 3/5 This location has seen better days and isn't particularly clean.

Tristan F.

Yelp
For Austin prices, Baby A's really got the job done. You don't go here expecting a 5 star meal, but the food hit the spot. The only disappointing part was the limit on alcohol. Overall, had a great experience.

Morgan L.

Yelp
Great happy hour food deals! Our waiter Andrea killed it with excellent service on a Friday night. Will be returning

Dave G.

Yelp
I'll start with the good. The michelada here was pretty enjoyable. Aside from that this experience was really disappointing. From the get-go when we walked in no one acknowledged us. There was a table of servers all seated and talking to each other who looked over at us and then just carried one. The smell in the main dining room was off-putting at well. This should have been a sign. We finally asked the bartender if we should seat ourselves and he said "sure". So we grabbed a seat on the patio and ordered drinks and I got 3 tacos a la carte. The food wasn't very good but I've had worse. Then, however, we ordered a side of guac for the chips and they brought out a 1oz side. When I asked them if they had anything bigger they said no - "no one orders Guac for the chips". Fair enough. So we tried the little bit they brought us and it was spoiled! We told our server and she was polite and took it away but still charged us for the side and didn't apologize at all for serving spoiled food. Go next door to Chuy's.

Caroline S.

Yelp
Ebelyn was absolutely amazing! She was very tentative and made the BEST margaritas! Everybody come ask to see her because she is absolutely beautiful and fun loving (:

Brandy G.

Yelp
The inside smelled of sour mop. We chose eat outside. Food was ok and service was great.

Lauren M.

Yelp
Went on a staycation with my boyfriend and visited this restaurant! Food was great but service was a -5/10. The waitress was rude and clearly did not want to be at work. I didn't catch her name because she never introduced herself and covered her name tag with a GAP hoodie half way through our dining experience. Several issues occurred during our reservation. My boyfriend ordered the Baja Bowl but requested the shrimp be replaced with the carne asada meat. She kept asking what tortillas and did not comprehend what he was asking her. She didn't ask any follow up questions. If he didn't have a 5 minute conversation with her explaining what he was asking for the substitution his order would have been completely wrong. She did not care about anything what so ever. We never received any silver wear or napkins at all. When we ordered a second round of drinks, she rolled her eyes and walked away with no response. I was shocked that we received the next round of drinks with no confirmation that our order was understood or heard. I would recommend this restaurant for drinks and food but the service is horrendous. She never checked on us if we needed anything, was rude and absolutely not friendly in the slightest bit. If you are working in the hospitality industry, please show up. This was ridiculous with how terrible the service was. Possibly the worst service I've ever had. I went to the restroom at one point and I saw she was sitting at the bar on her cellphone. A completely different server approached us, Evelyn, and was more friendly and kind in the short conversation we briefly had. Spoke to to the manager and she didn't seem care either. She had nothing to say but a simple "sorry". This is not about a comp, this is about servers being better at their job. Please just treat it with respect.

Tiana P.

Yelp
I never leave yelp reviews but I have honestly never had a worse experience at a restaurant in Austin. From the management to the servers the entire restaurant is awful. We were not given water, utensils or napkins until we asked multiple times and the servers were hovering over us but refusing to help. One of the bathrooms was closed off and entire restaurant smelled heavily like sewage. Apparently this is an ongoing issue because a server than came and sprayed bleach around our table while we were eating and we were unable to breathe. When we asked for the check and to go cups for our overpriced drinks they refused. This was an awful experience and we believe the restaurant should be investigated for health standard violations. This place has fallen so far.

Leah H.

Yelp
This place is really run down. The menu online is not updated and states happy hour is from M-F. There is no happy hour on Friday. Everything is falling apart. The salsa (very tomato-y) and the frozen margarita were not very good. I'd recommend going to Chuy's down the road.

Kimberly H.

Yelp
Love loved our time at Baby A's. Andrea Swanson was our server and she made our visit awesome. We were there for a small celebration and our drinks and food were perfect for the occassion. We will be back!

Ron D.

Yelp
The food and Margaritas are shit, highly overrated Everclear is no bueno much ado about nothing here. Such garbage. How do shit holes like this stay in Business?

Una D.

Yelp
Worth negative stars. I only came here because my friend insisted I try it and he wanted a drink. The only thing I got were the Amore's tacos with corn on the cob and got almost immediate and massive food poisoning. The food was clearly not good and not prepared well. I also got a sip of their purple margarita which was awful Exorbitant prices and our waitress messed up our credit cards. The even more disturbing part was when I was sick in the restaurant, at their table, not a single staff member came over to help or ask if I was ok. Do not come here. It's a tourist trap.

Alex M.

Yelp
This was the WORST experience we had in Austin. The service was so slow - our waiter straight forgot about us on the patio multiple times and the restaurant was practically empty. It took us 15 minutes just to sit down and get menus. Their purple margaritas are just cold grape juice, and while we were there the machine went down. We mentioned to the manager as he passed that we hadn't seen our waiter in awhile and he goes "Sorry we should have done sections this morning" HUH?! THERE ARE FOUR TABLES HERE! How does that explain why the waiter hasn't come back with the hot sauce we asked him for 3x. However, none of this compares to the General Manager's complete and total lack of customer service. I have NEVER experienced someone in hospitality quite so rude. After 20 mins when our waiter never came back to check on our food (that he got wrong) I went to find a manager. I found him inside and told him "the pork in this bowl was really fatty and inedible." You could see the fat pieces on our plate. He proceeds to follow me outside and dig through the bowl to see if we ate the pork or not. Then says "well you put dressing on it, you destroyed it." UMMM cause we thought we were going to eat it!! I literally dug through the bowl and pulled out all the pork still left. The whole bowl was full. There wasn't that much pork to begin with. THEN as if that wasn't bad enough - he goes "well you should be wearing a shirt." I've been here an hour, I'm in a bathing suit not naked and it's 100 degrees today. I have NO PROBLEM wearing a shirt but no one told me!! If I could give it zero stars I would. Go to Matt's this place sucked.

Cliffina J.

Yelp
The food is not good at all. We had nachos and it had about 3 ingredients on it. Nachos, cheese, and refried beans. No lettuces, tomatoes. Salsa comes spicy. I wouldn't recommend it.

Kathryn M.

Yelp
Came here after a nice day at Barton springs- it's a fun vibe especially on the patio when the sun is out! The staff were all really nice and the service was great! We ordered the Brisas bowl & Al pastor tacos both were flavorful and the shrimps were cooked nicely.... Also ordered their skinny margarita the classic 81 with jalepenos and it was a pretty decent margarita! Definitely a classic staple of Austin everyone should go to

Anna A.

Yelp
Was a regular here for a long time, and very disappointed with our recent visit. We were overcharged 50 dollars for four margaritas, and when we called the next morning they told us to wait until Monday, which unknowingly would make it so we couldn't dispute the credit card charge. We were also lied to by the staff and told their was security footage of us ordering multiple drinks, which we then asked for as it would have proved our innocence, however then they said there was no camera footage. We began checking with friends, and it turns out multiple people have been overcharged when drinking. I hate to think this establishment is taking financial advantage of drunk patrons. Check your check yall!!!

Keilon L.

Yelp
Come for a relatively stiff drinks and good atmosphere. There's a nice large patio in the front for outside dining which is (in my opinion) a necessity these days. There's nothing like dining al fresco with tacos and tequila...think about it, I'll wait...Nothing! As a newcomer and first timer I was forced to try the Purple--it's a purple margarita-ish drink. The flavor is pleasant like grape kool-aid spiked with tequila and Everclear...my kind of party. For the undecided or "undecided for," there's margarita flights where you get 5 different flavors in tall shot glasses that equal up to a full sized drinks. You have your choice of the tropical flavors or another set (which I obviously didn't get as I forgot the name; sorry). I chose the amores tacos which are the more traditional style, as they describe it. They're juicy and pair well with the zest of lime and their somewhat muted "green sauce". The fish taco is also a crowd favorite. I had a bite of one. It tasted fresh but lacked a lotte pizzazz in my opinion. This is a great spot to drink with friends and enjoy camaraderie while also having the option of pretty tasty tacos.

Susan W.

Yelp
Back in the day...they used to have the best puffy tacos. We ate here this week and the shells were stale and had very little meat inside. The refried beans were a little runny and the rice was mediocre. We've had some other not so great meals here. But, the puffy tacos were always our dependable go to. What a let down! It's never been the cleanest place...but we enjoy the laid back environment and people watching while we dine outside. The service has always been friendly to us, but don't think we're going back.

Donna H.

Yelp
The place is not a looker but the service and food were good. The queso compuesto was so good we ordered two! We ended up ordering the mixed fajita for 4 people. The sausage was fantastic as well as the chicken, shrimp and steak. Try a margarita (the purple margarita was a hit amongst the group) and enjoy yourself. Would return.

Christina C.

Yelp
Celebrating with my daughter I wanted to treat her to a good meal and a drink but baby A's , definitely was a bust. I asked for cheese enchiladas but I got shrimp enchiladas and I am not a fan so I didn't eat asked for swirl margaritas got regular margaritas . My daughter got a stuffed avocado she liked it. Sat outside on the patio and it was just dead no life in that place everything was just grey no music playing and the smell of garbage filled the air. Ya not what it use to be, I can't see myself going back there again.

Dermarcus B.

Yelp
I would not recommended coming here with a big group of people. The reason being that the server will be extremely rude and difficult to the group. I ordered the taco salad which you would think is hard to mess up but they somehow did. Imagine going to a Mexican restaurant that does not have hot sauce. Extremely unpleasant experience for our group and wish we had spent our evening somewhere else. They also forced you to give them a tip they did not deserve by already including gratuity. I have never had a server want to talk to us less. She needs to start looking for a job in a different industry because clearly hospitality is not for her.

Roberto R.

Yelp
food was really good, but our server Carmen was absolutely terrible. from the moment we got to our table she gave us attitude, not only that but she gave me the wrong meal and gave me the already picked at food once she realized her mistake rather than giving me a new plate. She then said we can only charge everything on one card just so she would get a gratuity tip ($25). good idea considering she would've gotten ZERO had it all been separate. Austin is usually known for its hospitality but this server was NOT a testament to that. I'm not one to leave reviews but this lady was the worst.

Jessica G.

Yelp
My mother use to tell me that, if your house is dirty it says a lot about who you are as a person. We are not from the area and it was a tad different from what we expected. When walking into the building the floors were sticking and the smell from the bar was very strong, smells like a drunk man off the streets or a sour beer. So that automatically got me scared to eat just from the atmosphere. My husband told me to never judge a book by its cover so we decided to stay and eat. The waiter was very tentative and respectful. The drinks were good and the food was amazing. The only down side I did not enjoy was the smell of sour beer and some of the waiters eating the chips in the chip basket area! No shame just grabbing chips from the machine and picking chips from baskets that were preserved. No gloves and very unsantized. The place needs a deep cleaning and a sanitation system in place. Boy I was scared from catching food poisoning but we made it thru and the food turned out ok. Would we go back? Hmm ask me a year or 5 from now.

Sacrificial L.

Yelp
Are you joking??? Which server signs for tips without asking the customer?? Just because you think you can doesn't mean you can take advantage of us. Just plain disrespectful. We were a big group and I understand gratuity but in what case does a server add the tip without asking the customer. Never returning, workers couldn't even bring out water for us?? Nothing else to say other than disrespectful. Margs are fine not even that good.

Marissa M.

Yelp
first and last time-- now i know why people travel to San Antonio for mexican food!!! i dont know how Austin people eat this crap. I had the helen special- green enchiladas puffy taco and soup. the only good thing- the soup. the enchiladas- the cook forgot to cook the tortillas in oil before filling it and the puffy taco- OMG!!! the worst!!! the tortilla was like a shell....hard and not tasty at all. my husband had the cowboy enchiladas- he thought he was back in the army!!! the way the enchiladas were prepared...$55.00 for what! save the money and the upset stomach.... come to San Antonio- we cook better!

We have always loved Baby Acapulco restaurants. We started going to the Riverside location in the 80s and have always been frequent patrons. Since the advent of COVID-19 and social distancing, we have patronized the Barton Springs location more because of their beautiful, well covered patio. One of our favorite things to do is to share a plate of fajita nachos and a purple margarita. Today we added a small queso to the order as well as iced teas. Our waiter, Greg, was very attentive and friendly. (During the pandemic, the staff is always masked and social distancing is enforced.) If we are not sharing a plate of nachos, my husband loves the chicken sopes and I often get the Al Pastore bowl. Most all of the food we have had here has been excellent and the service is always timely and attentive.

Yelp
Food sucks. Service is worse. To top it off they tip themselves 25% and don't give you the option. Would never come back here

Yelp
While in town for ACL my friend and I stopped here for dinner. It was right near the entrance which was perfect for grabbing a few drinks and tasty food beforehand. There was no wait to be seated and we thoroughly enjoyed the air conditioning. Food wise I had the shrimp enchiladas. I really liked the creamy sauce and the portion size was generous. I was also a fan of their salsa. It had a good amount of spice to it and was made fresh in house. Of course, I had to try once of their micheladas too. I was not disappointed. Overall this place hit the spot & I'd definitely come back again next time I'm in town. Tasty food and friendly service, a win win.

Yelp
Penny Wise Pound Foolish Came in Sat afternoon for some light snacks and drinks after doing some walking on the Town Lake Trail. Patio is great and people come here for a fun environment. The food is average TexMex fair. Fish tacos and shrimp/rice/black bean bowl. Nothing memorable but nothing bad taste wise. Guacamole was obviously not fresh, but fine. The flan was disappointing, too dry. Never have experienced that with flan before. One thing that absolutely ruins a dining experience is when you order a drink, the beverage is subpar, and the restaurant refuses to exchange it out or give your money back. We had ordered the Classic 81 Rita and a spicy margarita. The Classic Rita was fine, refreshing. The spicy margarita tasted like their bartender was clueless, made a normal margarita, forgot the actual order, and decided to throw in some hot sauce last second. It was garbage. We just had a spicy margarita at Lefty's the day before which was a million times better. Our waiter Beto informed us there was a corporate policy to not refund drinks. Talk about a penny wise pound foolish decision. Beto was a good waiter, I still tipped him the standard 20% but told him what an idiotic policy that management had. I will never go back to a place with such a cheapskate policy.
