The newest branch of the popular Baby Café has now opened in San Leandro's Marina Faire Plaza!
After the failed attempts in downtown Alameda, Southland mall and NewPark mall, the owners are back at it, and this time, in a much better location for potential success (Emeryville and Union City are still going strong).
Also shuttered is the Oakland Chinatown branch, and this one is apparently a direct lateral move from there. From what I can see, the menu is similar to the full sized offerings at sit down locations (not the mall/food court branches).
Despite the huge Cantonese population in San Leandro, this area has always been underserved with HK cuisine offerings, with Sisi's and Leisure café being the only other options if one doesn't want to venture out to Oakland Chinatown or down to the Tri-City area.
Another recent competitor within this realm is Garden Café in Castro Valley, and along with Baby Café, suddenly, there is a plethora of latenight HK "cha chaan teng" selection in this part of town!
I was so excited for this Baby Café to finally open its doors, I went twice within the opening week! And let me tell you... it didn't disappoint!
The interior motif is reminiscent of a park, complete with imitation full sized trees (making this more of a garden than Garden Café actually is). It is also quite spacious with comfortable seating spread very far apart, unlike at the cramped Union City location (after they removed the birdcages). Lighting is very bright, and ceilings are high, claustrophobics need not worry.
Service is friendly, and I recognize much of the staff from the other shops. Only time will tell if they will remain, or if they are only here for the grand opening.
The actual geographic location is very convenient, as it is part of the Marina Faire plaza anchored by New Sang Chong Market. In a blink of an eye, in true Chinese fashion, this once humble strip mall has turned completely Chinese, so it is now your one stop shop for all of your needs.
Parking is plentiful, since the lot is quite large. If there aren't any spaces immediately in front, there are plenty more around the corner.
As for the food... it's great! I have so far sampled a few items, from Curry Beef Stew, Sizzling Steak, Hainan Chicken, Hand Shredded Chicken, Mapo Tofu, Sizzling Ground Pork Japanese Tofu, and even the Milk Tea with their logo as an ice cube, and everything has been exceptional. My only *very minor* gripe is that the milk tea is a bit grainy, and not too strong, but it's certainly not bad.
So far, this branch of Baby Café is still in it's infancy, but as it matures, hopefully things will remain consistently wonderful!
