I stumbled across this gem when I was looking for a restaurant in the heart of E-town. I wanted something local with a 'home cooked' style. Let me tell you, this place was fantastic! The fried green tomatoes were some of the best I've tried to date. There was a crispy crunchy crust with a delicate soft center. Perfect combination to go with the spectacular sauce they serve alongside the tomatoes. I'd dine there again for those alone. The real star of the show was the Hot brown! Let me tell you about that! I've tried the original and some of the most popular places for hot browns and none can beat Back Home restaurant. I'm not kidding. The mornay sauce was perfection. Some places make it too salty or too bland. This one was perfect 👌. The crispy bacon, the toast wasn't soggy, the carved turkey was tender and moist. No turkey lunch meat here. If you're looking for a new place to try in a beautiful small town, Come here. It was my first time and it won't be the last. I can still still taste those amazing tomatoes and the delicious hot brown! My son loved his meal too. The meatloaf and carrots were to die for.

Saw a few social media reviews and decided to give back home another try. It has been at least 6 years since we had eaten here and we found the experience very average....hence the 6 year hiatus. Well let's just say we were underwhelmed with everything. We were seated in a crowded area (even after requesting a different table and were told this was the only available table and there were 15 open tables we walked past) our food was ok. I had the hot brown and added side of pinto beans 🫘. The hot brown was above average the beans were good too. Solid B. My wife has the meatloaf, hashbrown 🥔 🧀 casserole, broccoli 🥦 🧀 casserole and a bowl of green beans 🫛. All of her sides were cold. The flavor was lacking seasoning. We finished the meal with the peach cobbler and ice cream which was solid another B. Overall I would give the food a big fat C. Mid to mediocre at best.

***8 month Follow-Up - 7/4/2025*** This place is still amazing and still serving up great meals at a good price. I loved this place. One of the top spots for good southern home cooking. I will definitely check this place out again the next time I am in town. Amazing food and great atmosphere with the best mash potatoes I think I’ve ever had.

Very cozy place to eat. Food was excellent. I had fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. I tried the sweet onion souffle appetizer, both out of this world. My entree was fish tacos, once again very tasty. The fries that came with the tacos were also delicious they were the type with some king of coating on them. Service was great although our server wasn't super friendly, maybe she was having a bad day. The prices are very reasonable, so they wont break the bank. Would highly recommend this local gem to anyone.

This place is a must-go for all who visits E-Town. The food is all-around great and fresh! The waiter consistently checks on you(without overdoing it) and the vibe there was so enjoyable. Do not leave there without trying their sweet potato casserole! You'll regret it.

Back Home Restaurant offers a delightful taste of Kentucky with their flavorful dishes. Very happy we made a stop here. The service was impeccable, adding to the overall dining experience. The honey chicken Mac and cheese was a standout dish, perfectly blending sweet and savory flavors. Loved the green fried tomatoes! The cozy atmosphere made it a memorable dining destination for my family. Highly recommended for anyone craving comforting Southern cuisine with a touch of excellence.

Drove up from Nashville in route to Bardstown and stopped by on a whim for lunch, and so glad we did! The food was absolutely flawless and the service was outstanding. We shared the hot brown, the honey chicken and Mac and cheese, and then had the peach cobbler and coalminers cake for dessert. Here are pics of everything: they speak for themselves.

Everything about this place is good. Fried pickles? ✔️ Onion rings ✔️ meat loaf ✔️ hash brown casserole ✔️ macaroni and honey chicken ✔️ chicken fried steak ✔️ Vibes? It's like being invited to someone's grandma's for dinner. Service? A lovely - if busy waitress. 10/10 - skip the chains. Eat here instead.

Food is top notch and the service is phenomenal. I had pintos and cornbread and thoroughly enjoyed them. Hubby had the country fried steak with brown gravy. I initially called it sacrilege to ask for brown gravy, but after tasting it, I'm a convert! It's the best I've ever tasted. We ordered a peanut butter pie to go and I'm already drooling looking at in togo box.

Where to start? This little gem of a restaurant served me the best meal I'd had in Etown in years! I had the open faced roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. The potato's were homemade style and the beef was so tender you could cut it with a fork. One of my friends had the chicken fried steak and she insisted I try it. Definitely the best I've ever had! With cream gravy and mashed potatoes it was a real treat. My other friend had fried green tomatoes and an order of soup beans and cornbread that she said reminded her of her mother's kitchen. Oh and for the first time I remember from any restaurant it had a 100% from the health department! This place is not to be missed! I want go back! NOW!

I had a great experience here at back home restaurant we were seated very quickly. The waitress was super nice. The establishment had down home country field to it. It was great. My food was excellent. I got fried chicken with gravy mashed potatoes and it was all very tasty. I definitely recommend it and I would be back.

This was a great experience with excellent service, great food in a wonderful environment and prices. The hot brown, country fried steak and beans and cornbread were all great. Next time you get an opportunity stop by and check it out. They also have gifts and clothing as part of their gift shop.

Nice ambiance, good food. No service. We were passing through and decided to try this place. Had to catch someone to refill my husband's tea. Brought it back and added no Ice. Sat for awhile, after the meal, because we wanted some cobbler. Finally gave up and left. Our waiter never came back to see if we needed or wanted anything else.

In town for meetings, looking for something local and found this gem. Great selection of food and our server Morgan was amazing. The ambiance is unique and warm with small dining areas which adds to the experience. I will definitely return and highly recommend you check them out.

This was a welcome stop, friendly staff and patrons. Service was fast, food was amazing, fresh home cooked goodness. We had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, pintos and corned bread, fried green tomatoes All was excellent!! The establishment was as cute as could be. Cozy inside, lots of cute decor also had patio dining. Prices were reasonable servings were large. We will make this a stop when passing through near meal time.

THIS place is sooo good !! It looks waaaaaay smaller on the outside but then you step inside and they have big back rooms. While we were visiting, we had this place twice, we loved it so much. I got the Country Hot Brown, which before Kentucky, I've never had this open sandwich. OMG DROOOOOL !! I loved it better than the regular Hot Brown I've been having around town. The waitress did say Becareful ! Skillet is extremely hot. It was. SMH, I got burned when my thumb accidentally touched it. Ouch ! Now I have a little remembrance scar from Kentucky. lol My kids got the honey chicken both times we went and my husband got their meatloaf and man, we didn't even hear him all dinner. He was munching away, no talking. lol Overall, a must come and eat place !

Delicious Home Cooking and Wonderful Servers. Food here is really good and reasonably priced. I recommend the fish tacos, the pinto beans, the cod, and any of the sides. It's a homey atmosphere and the restaurant has a boutique attached to it that sells candles, chocolates, home decor, and women's clothing. This is a great place for lunch.

This a regular favoriye for us. Never disappoints. I had the hot brown and broccoli casserole. My husband had the special. Both wonderful meals.

Oh my gosh- we came here for the first time on a Thursday afternoon for a late lunch and loved the experience. You park in a small gravel lot, cross over a bridge and feel the warmth before ever stepping into the large house turned restaurant. And.... there is boutique shopping inside- both upstairs and in the waiting areas so be sure to go up and check it out!!! I had the most delicious fish tacos - the slaw mixture was melt in your mouth yummy and each of the 2 tacos came with a long hearty piece of fried fish. Heavenly! And our wonderful server brought us drink refills which I always love. It's a house- so tables and booths are set up throughout all the rooms . It's quaint and delicious. Ladies room is a one seater so plan ahead for a line! We will definitely come back here! It's worth a traveler's time to get off the expressway and support this home cooking restaurant!

Only problem was there were too many great dishes on the menu that we overate. It was all delicious and presented attractively.

This popped up on yelp and we stopped in and had a late lunch I got the country ham my wife had the chicken salad, we also got fried green tomatoes to start and not disappointed with our meal, and we finished off with the peach cobbler. The staff was very nice and took good care of us.

Great little dinner spot if you're craving some down home cooking. When we arrive for dinner shortly after 5 o'clock, there was only about 2 to 3 cars in the parking lot. We were warmly greeted inside by a friendly lady who showed us to our table. Our server greeted us shortly after and took our drink order, and helped answer some questions about the menu since it was our first time. I ordered Poppy's meatloaf, with mashed potatoes and a white gravy, and their white mac & cheese. Everything arrived in order, and was very delicious. The meatloaf was excellent and topped with a ketchup glaze crust, accompanied with pillowy mashed potatoes, and a creamy white gravy. The macaroni and cheese was good, however, it could use a little bit more seasoning. I found it to be a little on the blander side. Portion size was excellent for the price. I couldn't complete my entire meal and packaged it up for tomorrow's lunch. When we finished our meal, we perused around the front lobby which offers unique gifts, and home accents for purchase. At the checkout counter there are glass pedestals with sweet delicacies including bourbon, balls, and peanut butter balls. We snagged a couple of those for the car ride home. On our way out, we noticed the restaurant was very busy. The parking lot was completely full of cars, and others were circling the block looking for an empty spot. Parking can be challenging because the lot is extremely small. Get there early for the best spot because it does fill up fast. Overall, this is a great little hidden gem in the beautiful downtown of Elizabethtown. We will definitely be back again!

Super cute place and walking in the door, you *think* you are going to get a great meal here. Unless you like all of your food coming straight from the can or package, you will be mistaken. My military son was even less impressed stating that it was the WORST meatloaf he has ever eaten! That's saying a lot as he is a very diplomatic person. My hubby made the joke that it was like an MRE and he said that the meatloaf would give a MRE a bad name. I'm so sad that we dropped $75 on an appetizer and our meals. Talk about a mark-up!!! Lort! I would never recommend this place and I wouldn't go back. Setvice was fine. Food was terrible. So sad to say this but man, what a disappointment!!

As the name suggests, this is a comfort food place wrapped around a country furnishings gift shop. Always manned by the friendliest help you will find in this family run business. Don't expect anything complicated on the menu. It's all pretty basic American. I wanted to get the burger until I was told that they cook all the burgers well done. So I opted for three fried pieces of chicken breast on white macaroni with garlic toast. Joan had the fried green tomatoes and white chicken chili. I'm knocking a star because of not being able to get the burger medium, and another one for just lack of imagination on the menu. Example how about chicken thighs or chicken on the bone?

Driving through Elizabethtown, we stopped for supper. Loved the atmosphere. Morgan was our wonderful waitress. The food was great. Enjoyed our evening there.

I really enjoyed this restaurant! The food was good, everything we ordered was cooked perfectly, with the exception of the carrots I ordered. They were syrupy sweet, and I'm from the South. I really enjoyed browsing the store. There's a bit of everything and I wanted about half of it. This is a lovely restaurant/store. Sort of a small Cracker Barrel!!

Lord, if there was a place I could eat at every day, it'd be here. The food and atmosphere are so immaculate, I love it. That, along with whatever radio station/playlist they have on? Perfect. I always get open faced roast beef when I go there because it is one of my favorite meals, and when I tell you they do it so perfectly. The meat is tender, the potatoes are an amazing consistency, and even the BREAD is so soft and delicious. I'm scraping the plate clean by the time I'm done. The only negatives for me is that the service can be a little slow at times, but the waiters/waitresses are always so kind. They don't treat you like strangers. That and some parts of the restaurant are so HOT, and it's especially bad when you have to wait between drink refills. These things don't dissuade me, though, especially not when the food is so amazing. I feel like I'm witnessing the birth of baby Jesus when I see the waitress put down my plate in front of me.

We were on our way back to Texas from Ohio & always look for a unique place to eat. We're so happy that we found this restaurant! Delicious food & prompt service in a friendly, homey atmosphere! My husband had the country fried steak & I had the chicken fried chicken. Our sides were mashed potatoes, green beans, broccoli casserole, & baked potato salad. We both chose cornbread over a biscuit. Yummy! Highly recommend this for a great meal where you feel welcomed!

Great food! Great service! Great Atmosphere! What else do you need? Our server Morgan was amazing and gave us great suggestions all of which we highly recommend. The Honey Mac was just the right mix of sweet and spicy and the skillet caramelized the cheese of the Mac perfectly. The meatloaf is just like my momma makes it; my mom actually ordered it and it got her seal of approval. The turkey on the hot brown was carved versus sliced (I.e. not from the deli) and substitution of bacon for ham hit the mark perfectly. All the food including the sides was hot and our crab dip appetizer was eaten so quickly I didn't get a chance to snap a picture. We don't travel through Elizabethtown often, but every time we do now we will stop back home!

Always great food and great waiters/waitresses! Only issue we have been running into is calling and they tell us no togo orders due to staffing which is understandable but, feels like we are putting the hostess out sometimes when we call and ask if they are accepting togo or if we come in and there is a wait and we are actually willing to wait. Maybe those moments are just after a long day. If I hadn't had so many of those repeat experiences I definitely would give 5 stars.

In town for business and found this gem. Very homey since it used to be at home. Food was great. Service was great. I win all the way around.

Local home style place. Stopped in for dinner while on the road. Started with a small salad and it was pretty good. I had the chicken tenders over the mac n cheese and it was pretty good. I thought the chicken tenders were maybe a tad over breaded and I liked the mac better. But it hit the spot.

This was an interesting place. It's an old house and you eat in one of several rooms with 2-6 tables in them, so it does feel homey and uncrowded. Our server (Collin, I think) was friendly and attentive. He was good at anticipating refills and I liked that he had recommendations on the menu. One of those was the Kentucky Brown, which must be some kind of regional specialty. It is a hot turkey sandwich with cheese sauce. A day later I'm still not sure what to make of it. The individual components we all good, the turkey was thickly sliced, bacon was perfectly cooked and tomato seemed fresh. The cheese sauce didn't really seem cheesy to me, more like a thick gravy. I don't usually eat tomatoes but I did here just to get the full effect. I must have liked it, I ate it all. My wife did like the cod and she really liked the sweet potato casserole, she said it was like dessert. If we are in Etown again, I would definitely return.

Absolutely amazing home cooking. The honey chicken with white mac and cheese is my favorite! Great atmosphere and nice experience. I love that there is baked goods you can purchase at the checkout as well. We are return customers.

This is a really cute spot with good food, and it especially stands out among Etown restaurants. We went here at 11 for lunch, right when it opened, and we had a nice meal and were very well attended. We ordered the fried green tomatoes to start. They came with a spiced mayo that was very addictive. I ordered the fried green tomato BLT (can you tell I like fried green tomatoes?) and my boyfriend ordered the country fried steak. I subbed out the Lays chips it came with for broccoli casserole side. My boyfriend also got broccoli casserole for the side as well as mac and cheese. I could've eaten a bucket of that mac and cheese. Everything was really simple and tasty. I was really hungry and was hoping that the BLFGT would be a little heartier, but it was still really yummy. My boyfriend also ordered coffee and he was surprised by how smooth it was. Overall really good experience here, in a really cute and local restaurant. Would definitely recommend here in Etown!

We were passing through and read the reviews on this restaurant ... and were excited to find the Back Home. Reviews were great from many especially for the Hot Brown. My husband's Burger was average. My salad was far from a rave review. I am gluten free and allergic to pork, so I had few choices. The salad was your typical boring big bowl of lettuce. As my husband said, "In a good restaurant, every item should be worthy of good reviews." We will not return.

Decided last minute to come here for dinner and was not disappointed! Certainly items that called out to my southern roots and my home cooking needed belly. Decided to go with the Country Fried steak adding some fried green tomatoes as an extra side with the hash brown casserole and green beans. It didn't look huge but before I was over half way done eating my belly was certainly full! The decor and little options for purchase were also a good addition. Don't forget to grab a couple treats on the way out or have a dessert, if you have room.

This restaurant I would never go back to if they offered free food. I got the fried chicken dinner and they served me frozen Banquet fried chicken from a box and charged outrageously for it. It wasn't their chicken or fresh chicken made! Gordon Ramsay would have a fit!

We were back In Elizabethtown and had to stop in again. It was just as amazing as the last time. I had the country fried steak dinner, and the wife had the Kentucky Brown. Both were fantastic! Another thing we enjoy about this place is the soft 60's, 70's, & 80's music playing in the background. The people and service again are outstanding.

Today we enjoyed a meal at Back Home Restaurant. This is a restaurant located downtown in an old house. When we arrived the parking lot was full, which is a good sign that this is a popular place. Inside, we enjoyed looking at the Christmas decorations while we waited for a table. The menu features good country cooking, and our waitress made some recommendations. We started with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. For our meal, my husband had the turkey and dressing special with pinto beans and mashed potatoes, and I finally decided on the meatloaf, broccoli casserole, and potato salad. My husband enjoyed his meal, his favorite being the pinto beans. I enjoyed my lunch, too, and I will happily reorder the potato salad when I have another opportunity. So good! We're glad we had the opportunity to visit Back Home and recommend it to anyone looking for a good southern cooked meal.

The first thing I noticed when entering this old house turned family owned restaurant and store was how absolutely clean it was. You won't see a speck of dust anywhere. And there's a lot of square footage to keep clean. You're just gonna feel better from the gate eating in a place so tidy. We started with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. I strongly recommend. The dipping sauce for them was quite good as well. For the main dish, I ordered Chicken Fried Chicken with sides of mashed potatoes and mac n cheese. The chicken isn't the best I've had, but very good. The mashed potatoes are indeed some of the best I've ever had out. They are fantastic. The mac n cheese is decent, perhaps a little under seasoned, and considering there is an up charge on that side, I'd avoid. The corn bread was a little dry. Not a home run but I'd give it four stars. They were at three with the cleanliness alone. I'll be back the next time I'm in Etown.

We enjoyed dining here. We had a good server who was friendly and efficient. The meal was very good. I had the chicken fried chicken, which was served with milk gravy. For my sides, I choose hash brown casserole and broccoli casserole. You can choose your bread and my pick was cornbread. The iced was good (I ordered unsweetened and my husband had an Arnold Palmer). The restaurant also has a candy counter (delicious!), cards, and gift items. We didn't go, but there is a boutique over the restaurant. (BTW, the ladies room was clean, large, and nicely appointed.) Although it's a couple of miles from the interstate, it's worth the drive.

Great travel stopover. We had the fried green tomatoes, pinto beans and chicken salad. All good. Nice little country shop attached.

Recommend for the good food. Tried a couple dishes already. Will stick to the country fried steak. Made to order and the gravy accompanying compliments the dish well. Sweet potato casserole and mashed potatoes were also good. Staff is polite and helpful. This place does get busy and it's small, there will be delays in service. Parking lot in on the lot is small. The restaurant is at an intersection, there may be traffic at times.

Back Home Restaurant was a very pleasant dining experience with friendly wait staff and delicious food. Their home cooked meal style will remind you of your favorite dinners with your family growing up. They offer a boutique/gift shop inside, similar to what you may find at Cracker Barrel with better selections in my opinion. The menu is easy to navigate and select what you'll be enjoying, with a price that's well worth your visit. I would gladly stop in again when I'm back in the area, A+!

Amazingly quaint vintage atmosphere! Cute from the inside out! Sweetest ladies inside! It looks like the boutique upstairs keeps it very well decor very well done! I wanted more than a few things from the boutique! Very happy with the food!! Marked it as somewhere to come back if we ever travel through again.

The atmosphere is so cozy and homey. The service is wonderful. Food was wonderful. Hubby loved the ham. My salad was fresh. Would do it again if we're back this way again.

Newcomers to area and have been scoping out local haunts. Back Home is near the top of our list! Initially we hesitated due to limited handicap accessible parking. (Gravel is not wheelchair friendly.) Friendly and knowledgeable servers, relaxed atmosphere and good home style cooking. So far we've only tried the Kentucky Hot Brown as recommended by our server. Will be trying other entree items soon and doing a comparison of Hot Browns elsewhere as we've heard they vary from kitchen to kitchen. Great for families with small children; sturdy chairs and benches for seniors.

Great value. Portions were large for the price. Great flavor. Service was good. Only complaint was not all items ordered delivered at same time. This is our go to place when in town. Wish we had one in Northwest Alabama.
