"Savannah institution Back in the Day Bakery (2403 Bull Street) announced on Instagram that it will close its doors after service on February 14. Owners Cheryl and Griffith Day opened the shop in 2002, and have amassed fervent followers and accolades for their buttery biscuits, cinnamon buns, and classic Southern sweets." - Erin Perkins

"Despite its name, Back In The Day Bakery only dates back to 2002, but it has already established itself as a Savannah landmark. Owners Cheryl and Griff Day (the cafe's real namesake) are James Beard–nominated bakers beloved for their biscuits, which sell out quickly every day. Those buttermilk delights come topped with, say, baked egg and cheddar, ham and gruyere, or house-made jam. There's also a daily-changing selection of pies, cupcakes, muffins, and scones." - Paul Oswell

Best biscuit in town! The owner was there and she was so pleasant. I was delighted to finally meet her after reading her cook books. Baked with heart, that you can certainly taste. The charm of the shop invited a gentle crowd and we easily made a new friend inside. I really felt like I was going back to a safer, simpler time at back in the day bakery.

I finally made it to this lovely shoppe with the beautiful art and delicious pastries. Thank you for sharing your talents and kindness. Has anyone else known an Antonucci, as written on the drawing from a SCAD artist? Jan A was my favorite English teacher in the 70's, at Magnolia High in Anaheim. Connections make memories sweeter. Enjoy.

Google
I have heard all about this cute bakery and it did not disappoint! I knew it would be good when I saw the line inside and the tables full. My cousin and I went on a Saturday morning and it was just the best place to be. We ended up ordering a piece of "bluebarb pie" and a biscuit with strawberry jam on the side. So good, and so fresh. You could tell it was made from quality ingredients. The whole shop inside is decorated so cute as well! From vintage/farmhouse style, to southern charm, it had it all. You can even see them baking in the back if you go around the corner. Such friendly staff and overall a great place to be!

We wanted to come for brunch but that was Sundays and that’s okay- so check for breakfast times. But It was still worth it because hubby said that it was the best chocolate chip cookie he has EVER had. I had lavender shortbread and WOW!!! Tasty!

This place have delicious biscuits! I ordered bacon, egg and cheese and I have been thinking about it every day! I went with 3 other people and we all loved it. They ordered the BLT biscuit. The prices are high, mine was $11, but worth it. We also ordered the guava pastry and was spectacular! Coffee is great too! Definitely a must stop if you are visiting Savannah! Line was about 20-30 minutes, so go without being in a Rush.

Google
Back in the Day was highly recommended by friends & we were thoroughly impressed!! There were so many delectable options, it was hard to choose. I decided on the jalapeno biscuit with egg and pimento cheese...it was absolutely delicious. We also split a blueberry and blackberry muffin, equally scrumptious!! We're visiting Savannah for the next few days and we cant wait to return.

Google
The only negative is that are only open Saturday and Sunday. Banana pudding is the best I've ever had. Ham and cheddar croissant, so flaky and delicious with a hint of pepper from the ham. Star brownie is beyond rich and went great with ice cream. Biscuits and jam were superb. I have 2 of their cookbooks and love everything that I make from them. Will definitely be visiting whenever I'm in town.

Google
Yummy baked goods! The people there are also very nice. I’m happy that they’re open on Friday’s now! I got a Demi Baguette and the bread is the perfect amount of softness and crunch. The bread is nice and chewy and has a tasty bread flavor. I also got the pizza and it was warm which was nice. It was pepperoni pizza on a nice thick but also super soft bread. It was soft but also perfectly crunchy at the same time. The flavors were good too, a bit of peppery spice to it and it had olive oil on it. I’ll definitely come back here next time for the sweets! :)

Yelp
This was on a list of places to visit when in Savannah. Not just on the list but bolded as one of the places you MUST visit when in town. Following her instructions, we took a walk one morning to get some pastries and I am so happy we did! We must have gotten there right when they opened because the line got longer and longer as we sat and enjoyed our delicious pastries. Hot tip: get there early. The space is SO CUTE. Broken in half with one room being tables, couches, a long table. The other being the bakery and basically a vintage shop! They have very cute little selection of unique small pieces like salt and pepper shakers, plates, art. I wanted to get so many things but kept my cool and stuck to the sweets. We ended up getting 3 pastries and a pink lemonade they had just made and bottled. Between the peach pillow pastry, lavender and peach bar and the banana bread, it's hard to say what my favorite was. Honestly, just get them all. If I HAD to choose, it would be the peach pillow pastry. It was just that, light and fluffy like a pillow. Peaches were such a sweet little topped and the cream was so yummy. But that lavender bar??! Dense but in a good way. Ugh, back to not being able to decide now. I loved that we were able to get seats at the long table to sit and enjoy. I took another walk around the cafe with all of the goods and trinkets for sale and admired the art on the wall and the cozy space. If I lived in the area, I would 100% be a regular here. So, it's probably better for my wallet and pant size that I am not in walking distance. Go here, you'll love it. Your sweet tooth will love it.

Yelp
Social media brought me to this awesome bakery and the deliciousness of the pastries and friendliness of the owner will bring me back. I literally "fan-girled" at the chance to meet the owner. I know!! Stopped in on my drive home from Charleston SC. My only regret is that I got there too late to purchase all the things I think I would have wanted to eat. I did get to try an awesome brownie, lavender shortbread cookie and a sugar cookie with sprinkles. Next time I have the opportunity to visit- I'll get there earlier. Do yourself a favor and visit this place for some delicious baked goods. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the people are gracious.

Yelp
The cutest bakery with the besttttt food. The sausage biscuit was to die for! The cookies were delicious as well and the coffee was perfect delicious. It's definitely worth a visit to this bakery if you're in Savannah!! The staff is also super helpful!

Yelp
We went to Back in the Day on a Saturday right when it opened. There was a small line out front that moved very quickly. The inside is adorable, and full of vintage touches and items for sale. We opted for the everything biscuit, a sausage biscuit, a cupcake, and a cheesecake square. All were delicious, especially the sausage biscuit and the cupcake. We will definitely be back to sample more. Cheryl Day, one of the owners, was running the register and graciously signed my copy of her wonderful southern baking cookbook. Thank you, Cheryl!

Val R.

Yelp
Wow & Wow. We tried about 8 desserts and they all were delicious/awesome. The service was amazing and we actually met the gracious & welcoming owner Cheryl Day. It was fun interacting with other customers in the dining room. Everyone had a smile while indulging in the desserts. We were visiting from North Carolina and can't wait to return to Back in the Day Bakery.

Emily J.

Yelp
Super cute spot with incredibly friendly staff. They have a very adorable selection of odds and ends and items they were more than eager to gift wrap. The bread and pastries all looked divine and the slice of pizza was tasty. Clearly in a very artsy and eclectic part of town and they fit right in!

Yelp
A Disappointing Experience for a Longtime Fan. I've been a devoted fan of Back in the Day Bakery since they opened in 2002, and it's always been a must-visit spot whenever I'm in Savannah. However, my recent trip from San Francisco left me utterly disappointed. The bakery was unexpectedly closed, and to make matters worse, there was no mention of this closure on their website. Google had indicated that it would be open today, and I trusted that information before I got to the bakery this morning. Sadly, with its limited hours, I won't have another chance to visit during my stay. This lack of transparency and the inconvenience it caused loyal customers like me is disheartening. We've been supporting this business for years, and it's disheartening to see such a letdown. I'm still giving 3 stars because I know their bakery items are amazing. I just wish they were more thoughtful of their customers.

Tonya E.

Yelp
Cheryl and Griff are treasures, and Savannahians are blessed to have them here for 22 fantastic years. Thank you!!!

Angie T.

Yelp
I loved coming here during my college days, so I was really happy to come back to Savannah after almost 10 years and see that this bakery is still there. We stopped by on a Sunday morning and they were fully stocked. There's a nicely curated retail section and the main pastry/coffee counter. There is no seating and their hours are limited. We got a few pastries to go. My favorite was the guava danish, super flaky and not too sweet. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a sweet treat!

Emery D.

Yelp
Oh Back in the Day! I'm a huge fan of this bakery and their two main cookbooks. Everything they make is stupendous, but I think it needs to be pointed out that they have seriously downsized. A lot of these reviews and pictures don't reflect the current setup. I visited Back in the Day five or six years ago, and it lived up to the hype. A large variety of whimsical and classic baked goods to choose from. I went again while on vacation in Savannah last week, but I was disappointed to find a very limited, ordinary selection in a much smaller space than before. All they had were brownies, chocolate chip cookies, a key lime pie, plain and pecan croissants, blueberry muffins, vanilla cupcakes, and maybe one other unnoteworthy item. Nothing seemed even remotely freshly baked. Mind you, we went at opening. I wish we hadn't planned our morning around visiting here. Hopefully this helps others avoid making that mistake. Just get the cookbook and bake yourself!

Deb M.

Yelp
Don't understand all the fuss. Always limited selection. Glad she's successful! Service at register was friendly.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
It might be open during their business hours, or it might not. So don't waste your time. A sign in the window informed me it was closed for a private event this week for all three of the three days that it is said to be open. I had even checked the website and Google maps ahead of time to see the hours since I had to rent a car to get there. There is no mention of this closure anywhere, except on the door. How hard would it have been to post this change to their website? What a waste of my time and money.

Yelp
Was really excited to try this spot... took an Uber out here because we were visiting Savannah and didn't have access to a car. There was a long line when we got there but it made me excited to try everything. We ordered the tumeric orange juice. It had a lot of rave reviews but I didn't think it was that special. I use tumeric a lot (I drink it in golden milk when I want a little boost, I use it in different curries and soups in my daily cooking, and my mom also used it as a "cure" for certain ailments while I was growing up). I could barely taste the tumeric and it was floating in blobs in the orange juice so when I did get some tumeric it was too strong. The build your own biscuit was kind of disappointing... RISE in downtown Savannah was much better. The bacon was thick and crispy but that was pretty much all it had going for it. The biscuit was big and generous in size but a bit dry tasting. I like biscuits that are flaky on the outside and soft and not crumbly in the inside. Would probably not return here, even if I was craving a biscuit.

Linda D.

Yelp
My only regret is that I had recently eaten upon my arrival at Back in the Day Bakery. It was time to leave Savannah and head back home, and we were just looking for coffee. The iced latte was fresh brewed and so delicious. The old school vibe in this corner shop was so welcoming and I can not wait to return for another visit. I took a few minutes to browse the shop and check out the interesting items hanging on the walls. As I did so, I couldn't help but notice the gorgeous pastries and breakfast sandwiches that the patrons were enjoying. It felt like a spot for locals to just pop in to write an email or finish some work as the day progressed. I will be sure to keep this Bakery on my list whenever I return to Savannah. This bakery has such a friendly vibe and worth seeking out while passing through or visiting Savannah

Corey C.

Yelp
This place is magical. Full stop. Oh, you wanted more detail? Alright, then. The biscuits are tender and flaky and gorgeous - our favorite has to be the "everything" seasoning for the unique flavor. The egg bake - which can be ordered as a pillow tool to any breakfast sandwich stylin' is a delicious meld of cheeses and egg that makes you question what the hey you have been doing "mcmuffining" anywhere else. The sweets on offer? Daggggg. I'm rocking the double digit sweatpants again with no shame - absolutely worth every bite.

Kristen H.

Yelp
Back in the Day Bakery is only open on weekends, but I knew I had to stop by when I learned that Cheryl Day was nominated for James Beard awards for best baker and cookbook. The baked goods are a bit on the pricey side, but I absolutely loved the everything muffin with cream cheese and jam. The old fashioned cupcake is also possibly the best I've ever had - moist, light, and sweet but not overwhelming. You really can't go wrong here.

Alexis B.

Yelp
Yoonie told m about this place in a list of places to hit while in Savannah and it just happened to be outside of Starland Yard (which she also told me about... thanks for the tips Yoonie!). I was about to skip town after lunch and needed some coffee to go. I wish I could have stayed all day because it had the hip coffee shop vibe that we all know and love. It's definitely the place writers go to escape their plaguing writers block. It's full of energy and old school charm. We had just ate so we skipped the amazing pastry case and had a couple cold brew coffees to go. The have a station for you to add your own accoutrements so we made them to our liking and got on the road. Can't wait to come back and check out more of what Back in the Day Bakery has to offer.

Lisa P.

Yelp
Amazing bakery. I've only been to Savannah twice but knew that I should make a point to stop in both times. The customer service here is amazing. The people who work here are genuine and the baked goods are great. I don't think you can go wrong with anything. Yesterday a friend came along and purchased a slice of key lime pie before heading back to Florida. It was so good that she came back and bought a second slice. I had the Cardamon cold brew when I saw someone in front of me order it and say it was pretty damn good. It was. I actually wish I could have it today. If you haven't been. Go. Now.

Anya B.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this bakery. I'm a big Cheryl Day fan and have baked many recipes from her Treasury of Southern Baking. So the haul we walked away with was very worth it: a vanilla cupcake, ham and cheese croissant, biscuit with butter and jam, guava puff pastry, and a loaf of bread--all of which were excellent. The cupcake was one of my favorites, and the croissant was delicious too. The inside of the bakery is beautiful, from the display case of all the fresh-baked goods to the extras they sell in store (cookbooks, food-related accessories, etc). If I lived in Savannah, I'd be here every weekend.

Yelp
Back in The Day Bakery was promoting a pop up hosted by Preachers Soul Food where lunches would be available for purchase. I wanted to support so I went to check them out and was super disappointed with how rude Todd (the chef) was when I ordered the mushroom BLT. I was wondering if it was vegan since it was not notated on the menu so I asked the cashier & she called Todd out from the back. When he appeared, I asked "hey just wondering if there is bacon on the mushroom BLT or is it vegan? Just wasn't sure" & to which he replied, "there's no bacon on it" & walked away. No hello. No thank you for coming down and supporting my business. No smile. Just a look of inconvenience & annoyance. My sister suggested we go elsewhere but I ended up spending the $14 on his significantly under-portioned lunch box anyway. If Preachers Soul Food wants to expand it's support base in Savannah, they should really consider implementing a kinder or warmer approach. Savannah was booming today, I could've spent that money a dozen different places. At the end of the day, a business is only as strong as it's support base. Also, please consider letting someone run the line other than the main woman at the cash register. She is annoyed and unpleasant almost every weekend I come in & it is obnoxious. I have been following back in the day bakery for the past decade and I've been a huge supporter, but representation is everything and if you have people in the front who are rude, or if you're promoting businesses who show no desire to build a community base, then the brand that you've worked hard to build will suffer. There are other bakery's in Savannah with exceptional customer service, up the standard or lose loyal customers.

Melanie O.

Yelp
If the sweet little old lady who always had sweets in her purse was a bakery it would be Back in the Day! Wow my tastes buds were so happy I woke up early just to eat here! When you first walk in, you're greeted by a wonderful smell! The decorations are very cute and even have some stuff for sale! I also really appreciated how you can tell the owners really cared about everyone, the food and their employees with their words. I ordered the sunny side biscuit and a cold brew iced latte. Both of which make me really want to travel back here just to eat it again! The biscuit was sweet and buttery and the egg with the biscuit was subtle but delicious and I added chicken to it (but I felt like k should've left it as is) but overall insanely delicious! The coffee was smooth and made you want to never get rid of a caffeine addiction! I would go back for sure to try the pies and pastries and this one cake on display that I still think about. It had a vanilla frosting with sprinkles, simple and elegant. But before you leave make sure you go to the back and check out the clear wall where you can see where they make everything behind the scenes! I would come back here in a heart beat again!

Maisha R.

Yelp
Take me back to this bakery any day! We'd scoped this place out on yelp before a recent quick trip to Savannah and when we arrived around 11am on a Saturday morning, there was a good crowd. The line moved quickly however and seating became available in the small dining room by the time that we finished ordering. Wanting to try a few things, we got: 1. Grilled cheese which was filled with a mix of gruyere, Monterey, and white cheddar 2. Ham and cheese pastry 3. Sunny Day Biscuit Daily Special - biscuit with an egg bake and cheddar cheese, with added bacon and strawberry jam 4. Slice of pumpkin pie 5. Cinnamon roll Everything we tasted was really good. They are known for their cinnamon rolls and they are superb indeed! The roll was thick but not heavy, full of cinnamon, and glazed to perfection. This was the reason that we came and we were pleased after eating just that. Biscuits are their specialty as well. It was nice and buttery and flaky. I loved their homemade jam. The egg bake had a subtle flavor so it really allowed the biscuit to shine. All of their baked goods were very well made. The ham and cheese pastry had a nice about of herbs topping it and the pumpkin pie filling was delicious in between layers of crust. The only item that we ordered that wasn't 5 stars for me was the grilled cheese sandwich. The bread was good but it was much too cheesy for me. Sometimes less is more and this was definitely one of those occasions. The same could be said about the bacon that we added to the breakfast sandwich. It was very overcooked. For $2, it wasn't worth it. What was worth it however, was the money that we paid to enjoy these delicious pastries! I hope to return here to try more of everything'

Linda R.

Yelp
Been to hundreds of bakeries throughout my travels and this remains my favorite worldwide. First of all, it just feels like what I imagine southern living to be like and evokes a nostalgia of down home baking. Second of all, I've tried most of the savories and sweets offered and they simply can't be beat. Though it'd be hard to pick my favorite, I've never had anything that I could count out as not being a favorite, I'd have to recommend the banana pudding. Side note, the banana pudding portion is plentiful (large) for the price...IMHO, all items are reasonably priced.

Fifi C.

Yelp
Both the Sunny Day and Sweet Potatoes biscuits are delicious. The biscuits are freshly baked with nice balance of savory and sweetness. The Sunny day biscuits is filled fluffy egg and melted cheese. The sweet potatoes biscuits super has a unique taste and nicely combined with the cola ham. I highly recommend both biscuits. The lavender shortbread is surely a disappointment! It's more like a sugar cookies than shortbread. It's dry and sugary.

Kelly L.

Yelp
Super cute bakery! Stopped by at 2p and they were sold out of a lot of stuff already! Got the guava puff and it was so fluffy! Would come back again!

Justin O.

Yelp
We used to love this place! The breakfast sandwiches, biscuits, banana pudding, and the coffee were amazing before the pandemic in the original building. This last Saturday we went in to grab breakfast, and ordered two biscuits with butter and jam. We were expecting hot amazing biscuits that we remembered from before. We were handed a brown bag with cold biscuits for over 6$ each. Over 6$ per cold biscuit? Why would you get rid of the best items on your menu? Bring back the good stuff, and at least if you are going to rob people for biscuits, heat them up!

Liz P.

Yelp
This place was very tasty. My Airbnb host recommended it and it was about a 10-minute walk, it's definitely off-the-beaten-path though. You can find it at the intersection of 40th Street and Bull. I saw a picture of the everything biscuit on Yelp and that is what I got, with sausage and homemade jam for $7. I never would have thought to pair sausage with jam but it was very good - almost like a sweet and savory McMuffin. They had loaves of bread, cupcakes, and other foods that also looked delicious, as well as coffee and other drinks.

Hollie P.

Yelp
The old fashioned cupcakes and cakes are out of this world, seriously phenomenal. Wish I could have one every day.

Lindsey S.

Yelp
3 words: Bourbon. Bread. Pudding. I would go back everyday just to eat it, but my figure would hate me! Their iced chai is also to die for. Not too sweet but still full of flavor. I also had the Everything is Everything biscuit and my boyfriend had a buttermilk biscuit and added chicken. No disappointment! Tip: make sure when you come in you aren't in a rush. It is a small bakery and there was a good wait in line to order when we went, but there is so much for you to look at (and drool over) to pass the time. It is a cute spot that I highly recommend, especially when you have a sweet tooth!!

Kennedy B.

Yelp
If you enjoy rich, delicious, sweets- this is your place! I tasted 'Back in the Day Bakery' for the first time at Perc Coffee (another wonderful spot in Savannah). I was pleasantly surprised buy the outstanding flavor of their Poptart Pastries. Flaky to the tongue, but bursting with outstanding flavor once taking a bite- I HIGHLY recommend trying. The strawberry filling was outstanding, but the Hazelnut was even better! These pastries are incomparable to anything in the Savannah area! I'm actually quite upset my time in Savannah ended so quickly, and that I will not get to continue to try these sweets!

Eliana W.

Yelp
This is the best. bakery. ever. That pretty much sums it up, but to explain, I have had the back in the day bakery cookbooks for a few years now and have baked numerous recipes from the books. When we planned a trip to Savannah, it was basically so that I could go visit this bakery (yes, actually). We came by one morning and there was a line nearly out the door. While waiting in line, I could not figure out what to order so we pretty much ordered everything - a homemade strawberry poptart, an everything egg biscuit sandwich, a cinnamon roll, a piece of strawberry pie and a piece of cake. Everything was flawless - literally! The most amazing, however, was the biscuit sandwich. The biscuit was so flaky and perfect I couldn't believe it. In fact, everything was so good that we altered our plans so we could come back again the next day. When we returned we each ordered a sandwich, one was the curry chicken salad, the other vegetarian, and shared a pastry filled with cream cheese and chili jam. I would normally never order anything like that but my boyfriend wanted it and it was probably the best thing we got because it was so surprising! The decor is also ridiculously cute and old-fashioned with a pastel color palette and vintage hangings all over the wall. I keep joking that we need to go back to Savannah just to come back here again, and I wouldn't be surprised if we actually do!

Ambar C.

Yelp
The most lovely artisanal bakery I have encountered! Came on an early morning and was able to see the magic happening in the back. The decor is vintage and cute but with a real homey vibe. The coffee is fantastic and all the pastries look delicious. I had the biscuit sausage sandwich which was the most flavorful breakfast sausage I've had. And the biscuit was hot and fluffy and just perfection. Also the brownie is to die for.

Rodger S.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! I can't even begin to describe how delicious the food is. The cinnamon roll! The chocolate heaven cupcakes! The chocolate chip cookies! OMG! OMG! OMG! The place itself also provides a lovely place to eat the scrumptious food. And the staff members are delightful.

Wandering W.

Yelp
We went to here based on Yelp reviews. Walked in to a woman behind counter that completely ignored us. Finally asked if we could be waited on and was told "all we have is in the case". We were treated very rudely. As to food, we did not try anything, but what was in the case did not look fresh or appealing. Left there and went across street to an amazing lunch at the vault.

Yoonie L.

Yelp
What can I add to this page of stellar reviews without sounding like a broken record? Well, I'm gonna give my 2 cents anyway! Back In The Day Bakery (BITDB) has been on my list for quite some time, but they are only open from Thursday to Sunday, so it hasn't worked out...until a few weeks ago. My husband got off work early and we took the kids to the SCADMOA and remembered...wait, what day is it?! Is it open?! ? Yes! Yes! YES! So off to BITDB we went for lunch. Walked in around 12:30 pm, no line, but unfortunately they were out of the Buttermilk Biscuit, one of the things I heard they were famous for. But am I surprised? Of course not. My bad for coming this late in the day, but there were still some solid choices. - Parking - Street parking. Around this part of town, it's free. Most of the parking is not metered, but watch out for restricted days and times as indicated on street signs. - Vibe - It has this simple, clean exterior and then you open the door and walk into this super cool, old school, industrial vibe. The shop layout is in a L-shape. The order counter is on one end, so you order, pay and grab a seat. They'll call you up when it's ready and you bus your own table. They seemed to have just cleaned up the original interior, keeping original window panes and preserved wood from...wait for it....back in the day (ok, I had to throw that in there somewhere LOL). They painted some of the brick walls white and they have all sorts of vintage items and furniture, paired with new pieces. You know when mismatched furniture is put together that it all somehow matches? Yeah, that's the look. I was also delighted to see several art pieces by Cedric Smith, a local artist. - TLC - The lady who served us was very courteous and even introduced herself and to let her know how she could help as we were trying to decide what to order. You don't really get the introduction at most order counter places. Am I wrong? She was super sweet and genuine. - Eats / Refreshments - Dirty Chai - This was great! My husband ordered this one and let me have a sip. Cardamom Sweet Milk Cold Brew - I loved the addition of the Cardamom for their version of an Iced Coffee. Custom Made Biscuit with egg bake, ham, Gruyere cheese on Everything Buttermilk Biscuit - Since they were sold out of the Buttermilk Biscuit and since I desperately wanted to taste this biscuit after making it here on the right day, the closest thing was the Everything Buttermilk Biscuit. The only difference is the Everything seasoning on top, so it was the next best thing. Ok, are you ready? It's the best damn biscuit I have EVER eaten. EVER. Yup, I said it and if you know me well, I actually hate (ok, don't tell my kids I said that, it's a bad word in our house)... strongly dislike when people make these types of claims. Personally, I rarely make claims like that, but when something is as memorable as BITDB's biscuit, I am forced to throw in the towel and dish it out. Sure, I may meet another biscuit in the future that may take away that title, but I won't forget this one quite so easily. The biscuit was so thick, so buttery with so many layers. It was almost flakey and really, it's okay to be flakey when you're a biscuit. I couldn't fit the whole sandwich in my mouth. The Everything Seasoning was sprinkled on the right amount and the pairing of ham and Gruyere cheese was the classic combo. Oh, and the egg bake needs an honorable mention. It is no ordinary egg. It's not an omelette, fried egg or scrambled as you might think. Please note in terms of texture, not the flavors, but it almost reminds me of the consistency of a Gyeranjjim (Korean steamed egg dish) or maybe even more closer to a Chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg dish), cut into a generous square perfect for the biscuit. From the description, their egg is baked, but it was soft, silky and smooth texture to it! Amazing, I tell you! Curry Chicken Sandwich - made with house made ciabatta bread. The crust of the bread was a bit too hard for my husband as he has braces right now, but I loved it! It was a curry mayo with golden raisins and greens! So delicious! - Kiddos - No Kids menu, but the kids shared a Grilled cheese that was made with Gruyere and Cheddar Cheese. Plenty of gooey goodness and half a sandwich was a perfect portion for both kids. They also offer sweets, did I mention that? I have to go back for those too! So the moral of this story is go early and 12 pm may be too late. There is a reason why this wife and husband duo have written books and won awards, and a well deserved one at that. The fact that we get to indulge in their weekly offerings right in our city is a gift. Treat yourself and plan a visit... anywhere between Thursday and Sunday.

Yelp
It's hard, as a tourist and out-of-towner to provide a 5 star review and provide anything different from the over 300 (I'm guessing) glowingly positive reviews, so I won't. This place is worth the hype, has one of the biscuits this northeastern person has ever eaten, is lovely to experience and was incredibly friendly. Pros: Food. My wife and I tried the staple Egg and Cheese biscuit (with bacon added) and Ham and Gruyere biscuit. They were excellent with a mildly flaky, very buttery crust. The bacon was a thick "rasher" style, real egg and gooey cheese. The gruyere on the ham wasn't the cheap stuff - it was aromatic and similarly gooey. We loved these and the biscuits are worth the stop even if you're closer to downtown. We also tried the cinnamon roll which was warm with an oozing icing that was incredible and perhaps made me pre-diabetic. Service - friendly, enjoyable, happy to wait on you. We felt at home! Crowds - small, but polite and enjoyable as well. Southern hospitality again and again Cons: Too much stuff to try! And from what I understand, they run out frequently and somewhat early on weekends. The hours aren't ideal, but we have similar shops in and about towns where I'm from and it's fairly normal. What you'd get in extra hours, you'd lose in quality. This is perhaps more noteworthy than an actual con. Conclusion: If you're like us, from out a town and debating a trip. Just do it. We were fortunate to be staying at an AirBNB nearby that worked PERFECTLY. When we come back to Savannah, we'll be coming here.

Yelp
April 2019 - party of one I've been anxious to try this place for a while based on all the Yelp reviews. It's only open Thu-Sun so this took a little planning on my part. I ordered the pimento cheese & bacon on a ciabatta roll, plus a biscuit and slice of coconut cream pie to go. Coconut cream pie is my favorite and very hard to find. The sandwich filling was really good but the bread was so over-toasted that I couldn't even bite into it. Since the front counter was packed with drooling customers, I didn't ask for a re-do. I used a fork to eat the insides. The biscuit lived up to all the adoration, even perfect without butter. The star was the pie! Although it sat in my warm car all afternoon, it was still delicious by the time I got home that night. Next time I will stick to dessert to go.

Yelp
It's with good reason that Back in the Day Bakery has been a nominee and finalist of the prestigious James Beard Award for culinary excellence. I've eaten here enough to have favorites and personal dislikes. Their biscuits and variety of breads are baked fresh daily, and they use their breads for their sandwiches. Additionally, you'll wait in line by the display case full of fresh baked cinnamon rolls, scones, cookies, cakes and so much more. Today I enjoyed The Bakers Salad, $11.50, which was a profusion of color and veggies! Tomatoes, cauliflower, radish slices, cucumber, broccoli, pickled onion, red onion, mixed greens, golden raisins, grated carrot, walnuts, and biscuit croutons make up this salad. Their homemade Brown Sugar Balsamic vinaigrette was the frosting on the cake! Delicious! Hubs always orders his favorite, the Egg Biscuit, and it's actually my least favorite - personal preference. However, the ingredients are fresh and biscuit homemade! The egg on this biscuit is whisked (I'm assuming) like an omelette, and baked in a sheet pan (I'm assuming) then cut into squares. It's a soft, slightly fluffy, square shaped egg. Additionally, you can build your own biscuit with any topping or condiment. Other tips:This popular spot usually has a wait. Today they had a brown sugar simple syrup to add to coffee or tea - ingenious! Their banana pudding is to die for and made with their homemade cookies. They have a wonderful published cookbook. Enjoy!

Yelp
Unlike most people who visit the place we were unaware of this place's history or popularity. Came here on a Sunday promptly at 10am. We were the 3rd people in line. We were lucky to have our pick of baked goods including cookies, danishes, biscuits, and croissants. We had a pecan croissant that was OUTRAGEOUS! The brownie was also spectacular and melted in your mouth. The selection is not huge but you do have choices of both sweet and savory items. The items are not inexpensive but they are worth it. Make sure you come at opening. By 10:15 the line was around the block.

Yelp
Y'all. This is one of my new favorite breakfast places in an up and coming area of Savannah, near the new Starland Yards project. We stopped here and grabbed some breakfast and some treats. First off, the buttermilk biscuit was amazing -- flaky, buttery, and the perfect amount of flavor! We created our own and added egg bake, bacon, and pimento cheese. My husband had the ham instead of bacon and it was great, too! We also had a star brownie, chocolate chip cookie, and blueberry strawberry bar all of which were amazing. They also offer cold brew, hot coffee, and iced coffee. The best news of all, they create a few simple syrups in house (no monin syrups here, hallelujah!) and the two we tried (maple vanilla and brown sugar) were both delicious! I am so happy that we visited here! The staff was so welcoming, kind, helpful, and you could tell that they all enjoyed working here to make your experience great

Yelp
Pretty spot, nice people. Unfortunately we didn't get there early enough to buy what we wanted (pound cake) but knowing that, we'll try again.

Yelp
Back in the Day is a neat little spot with a cute and vintage decor. While their menu is somewhat limited, their biscuits and baked goods are delicious. My partner had multiple iterations of their buttermilk biscuit sandwiches during our trip and loved them all. Also, they have unique coffee options such as maple vanilla & lavender honey lattes; however, since I'm not adventurous with my coffee, I had it black it was just fine, which is really my sole complaint here related to taste. My only other complaint would be that the prices are just a bit higher than one would expect. But, overall, a cool ambiance with some delicious baked goods. Oh! and one last tip: they're closed Mon-Weds, so plan accordingly!

Yelp
The line is worth the wait. Get the biscuits, croissant and brownie. You are set for the day. Absolutely delicious.

Yelp
Best biscuits ever!!! Wish we'd known. We would have bought more. Thank you to the Pinterest board that let us in on this little secret while we were in town. Treated ourselves to some traditional southern pie as well. It didn't disappoint. Do yourself a favor and add this to your Sat. morning calendar while you're visiting.

Yelp
Holy cow. This place has the BEST BISCUIT of my life. If you are ever in Savannah, our this place on a need to visit list. Get the everything biscuit and don't question anything. The everything biscuit had the absolute best texture of any biscuit I've had - The perfect outer crunchy texture and fluffy inside. Their sweets case was glorious. From pies to cupcakes to banana pudding to loaves of bread the options were endless. We wish we could have tried one of everything!!! Go here, you don't regret it.

Yelp
Six stars if I could. This bakery is the first time ever I have gone back to a restaurant twice in one day while traveling. It's that good, I needed more before I left town. The star here are the biscuits. I ordered a cheddar and French onion biscuit, which was the special of the day, as a biscuit sandwich with eggs and bacon. That biscuit was so good that I deconstructed the sandwich so I could fully savor the biscuit in all its glory. (The eggs and bacon were good too, but this biscuit was something else!) Flaky and rich and glorious and just GO GET A BISCUIT. So of course I also got a biscuit cinnamon roll. Which was amazing. The biscuit dough lends it a solidity and savory aspect that makes it not too sweet (and an absolutely amazing breakfast treat). It worked really well with the cardamom sweet milk coffee (their take on a less-sweet Vietnamese coffee, it was also excellent). And, because I'm a glutton who loves this stuff, I had key lime pie for dinner. Yep, they can do pies too. Rich crust, light filling, it was everything key lime pie should be. The conventional cinnamon roll has a brown butter type feel that's sort of caramel-y and also delicious. In short, get yourself to this bakery. Early. Often. Get a biscuit. Then get everything else.

Yelp
Mercy mercy what a gem! The staff are absolutely delightful. Now about the food! What a blessing it was to have some of your offerings. We had a sausage biscuit with jelly. You are rated as having the best biscuit and that rating is spot on. We also had a ham and cheese crescent and a pecan crescent which were the absolute best. The environment perfectly matches the name.

Yelp
Super disappointed! I had been told by so many people how great this place was before covid. Went today and got a ham and cheese croissant. It looked great! When they served it to me it was cold and had obviously been sitting out for several hours. When I asked if they could heat it up, they told me no and they didn't have their ovens on. :-/ Maybe they were good before covid.
