Where to Drink Chicago’s Most Heartwarming Hot Chocolates

"Neighborhood landmark Back of the Yards Coffee infuses its hot chocolate with a healthy dose of caffeine. Try the “Xocolatte” with creamy espresso, house-made chocolate ganache, cinnamon, and chile ancho. The coffeehouse is temporarily closed as the team relocates to a new space inside the historic Goldblatt’s Building at the corner of 47th and Marshfield. It’s slated to reopen in late spring or early summer 2024." - Naomi Waxman, Eater Staff

Where to Eat and Drink in Chicago’s Back of the Yards Neighborhood - Eater Chicago

"Founded by two entrepreneurs who grew up in the neighborhood, Back of the Yards Coffeehouse was originally intended to be the public face of their coffee roastery, but within a week of opening, it was apparent that it had become a neighborhood hub in its own right: a showcase for local artists and musicians and a popular hangout for students at Back of the Yards College Prep across the street." - aimee.levitt

The coffee shop is very clean and inviting. It’s a very welcoming atmosphere, the staff was great! We tried the dulces recuerdos, chai latte and xocolatte! The drinks were good but we weren’t big fans of the empanadas, we tried the cochinita and the rajas. They weren’t very flavorful. Might try some different when we go back. The pastries looked great so I look forward to trying those! Overall it was a positive experience!

What a beautiful addition to the lively neighborhood of Back of the Yards. The food was amazing & is actually a collaboration with the 47th Bistro chefs. Sal has such attention to detail while plating his creations & the drinks have always exceeded my expectations! Highly recommend the drink Sana Sana, (like this comment if you ended up trying it! You can thank me later! 🙌❤️) Again, I can't stress this enough. You guys are bringing a new wave of mexican contemporary fusion and I can't wait to see what the future holds!

I was a bit weary, but walking in, I wish I had brought my bag or papers to sit and get working. Such a big area where you can find a table to sit at and not be bothered. The tall windows bring in so much sunlight and makes it inviting inside. But you won't be here for just the atmosphere; it's the food!! *chef's kiss* this is not a "heat and eat" establishment. They take their time and put their love into preparing their food. We had all 3 of their empanadas, and I may have found my favorite item there. The lattes were on point and syrups are made on house making them just the perfect balance of flavor and sweetness. Check them out!

After a long wait since their last location, I was so happy to see this finally opened up still in our neighborhood! The space inside is so pretty and spacious for people watching or bringing friends and family. The staff, music, and of course the drinks and food were worth the years of wait. I was excited to see the 47th Bistro food menu and it did not disappoint. The empanadas and sandwiches are just as delicious as the food from their food truck. The staff helped me pick out my drink and heated up my muffin. I’m so happy to see that they kept their syrups from their last location since I’m in love with the dulce de leche latte. I had a nice conversation with the baristas about what they have planned for the future so I’ll be looking forward to it!

I stopped by today and really appreciated the overall atmosphere — the space is inviting, open, and has great potential for a cozy coffee shop vibe. That said, it was a bit chilly inside, which made it tough to settle in and enjoy the experience fully. Service was friendly and welcoming, which I always value. However, my coffee was served closer to room temperature, and the muffin I ordered was cold, which took away from what could’ve been a more enjoyable treat. I’m not ruling this place out — there’s definitely enough here to bring me back. Just sharing my experience today with the hope that a few small tweaks could make a big difference.

A vibrant environment. Very spacious and clean. A great space to study and meet up with a friend. Araceli’s bakery opening next door is a plus!! <3 happy more coffeehouses are opening up in this area.

I recently visited and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere was super welcoming, with comfy seating. I ordered ojo rojo and a piña pastry, and let me tell you, both were delicious! The cafecito had just the right amount of froth, and it was rich without being too heavy. The pastry was warm, fluffy, and packed with pina, which made for a perfect mid-morning snack.
