I'd had Back A Yard's jerk chicken at their place in San Jose, since moved, long ago. Now they've enlarged their menu, and I thought that a large takeout order could give me two or three meals to sample a bunch of stuff on.
The jerk chicken continues to taste excellent: a good sauce baked on the chicken and not too strong or off-putting. I enjoyed that food very much. There was only one problem, which is that there was a lot less of it than I ordered. What was on the menu was 5 whole wings. What I got was 5 winglets, i.e. the individual joints, drums or flats. I know this was a mistake, because it cost more than did the fried chicken, which was 8 winglets. But there was nothing I could do about it, because this was a takeout order and I didn't find the problem until I got home. This is the kind of mistake which seriously impairs a restaurant.
The fried winglets? Nothing unusual, but excellent of their kind: light breading, crunchy but not heavy.
About the bbq I was not so sure. Sweet sauce rather slathered over the chicken and ribs, both of which were - unlike the others - very dry meat. This wasn't much of a problem with the ribs, which compensated by being reasonably fatty. But the chicken, unlike the jerk or fried, was not very appetizing. Two drumsticks and I guess a thigh? But it was as dry as an overcooked breast. This was not because I heated it up later, because I had saved some of the fried winglets and they were fine heated up.
Based on this, I'd avoid the bbq chicken and stay mostly with the jerk, their specialty.
