South Lamar Cocktail Bar Backbeat Is Closing - Eater Austin

"Backbeat, located at 1300 South Lamar Boulevard, is one of South Austin’s few proper cocktail bars. It will be closing with its last day of service on Sunday, June 10. The space will be turned into something new to be revealed in the fall. The cocktail team participated in the Official Drink of Austin in May, with bar manager Steph Teslar creating the Graffiti Park cocktail. Backbeat originally opened in March 2016 under Jessica and Michael Sanders, founders of Drink.Well. The partnership with the Sanders ended in the fall of 2017 after allegations against Michael Sanders." - Nadia Chaudhury

Pretty casual local bar with a hip drink menu and upscale bar snacks to match. Their Sunday specials are worth checking out. Their special drinks are tasty, though I've only had a couple of them so far. The ambiance is cordial and inviting, but the lack of parking out front knocked off a star for me. You may have to park several blocks away in the neighborhood.

This is the first real, standalone cocktail spot in 78704, and it's fantastic. My girlfriend and I love the interior design, and patrons seem smitten with the upstairs roof deck. Mostly, though, we're there for the drinks, which range from well executed twists on classics to interesting concoctions worthy of their own backstory. The drinks menu changes with the seasons while the tightly curated food menu remains largely consistent throughout the year.

My boyfriend and I visited this place for the first time the other day and we weren't impressed. The bartender was grumpy and off-putting, even after we told her it was our first time there. She didn't make us feel welcome. My boyfriend and I went upstairs to the rooftop, which is cool, but as far as rooftop bars in Austin go, you can find one with a better view than the traffic on South Lamar and the car wash across the street.

Cute (and tiny) bar but they have an upstairs patio too. The personality of the bartender was on point. If you can find this bar outside of a Google search, you deserve one of their creative cocktails. Too bad I moved north the week I discovered this bar.

Loved the drinks, music, and ambiance... But John the bartender kind of ruined the customer experience. He was EXTREMELY rude. After a painstaking inquiry into a very foreign (to me) craft cocktail menu, I tried to put it off and attempted once again to be friendly and asked him a simple question and he said "try Google". Funny but not cool man. I'm a pretty easy going guy, get the chip off your shoulder bro.

A great place to drop in and grab a well made cocktail or perhaps you fancy meat and cheese plate. They have an inside bar and seating on the street level and then an upstairs partial outdoor space for when chillaxing austin weather is at its finest. Price: $$$ - take the time to try a handcrafted cocktail over a brew.
