The Best Breweries, Food, and Drink to Try on the BC Ale Trail | Eater

"Known for a welcoming tasting room dominated by a large communal table where locals and visitors mingle; while pizza is important here, the kitchen also produces sandwiches, salads, and mains like seared albacore tuna, beer-brined fried chicken, and spaghetti carbonara." - Vox Creative

Nice little brewery. Came on "Wing Wednesday" ordered the salt and pepper wings and dipped in their dill forward ranch and hot sauce. Nice crispy wings. Good beers and sours, got some to go. Regret not getting a pizza, guess we will have to go back. Parking is not ideal but we found parking on the street, nice for bigger vehicles.

Google
Hands down the best pizza at any brewery I have been to. Flight of IPAs was good but the G.O.A.T. pizza was outstanding. Great crust: good leoparding, good structure, and great taste. The toppings were rich but reasonably well balanced in texture, saltiness, and fattiness. Service was just OK, borderline poor.

Oh my freaking gossssh. This brewery is amazing. Top notch. Perfection. Their sours?!? Amazing. Fantastic. Creative. Unique. I’ve never seen a brewery with such a large selection of straight up incredible sours. Cherry cola?? Strawberry creamsicle?? Ice cream sour?? Blue rasp lemonade?? Fuzzy peach?? Oh my GOSH they are all fantastic!!!! Devastated I don’t live in the area, if I did I’d probably be here daily. Their GOAT pizza is delectable. I had it twice in the last 5 days and I already want more. Their ceasar salad is creamy, cheesey perfection. Everything about this place is so on another level, I’m in awe. If you haven’t been you need to stop everything you’re doing and go right now!! Can’t wait to go back!!!!

I'm, shall we say, a finicky beer drinker from Vermont. Such a PITA that I sometimes don't look forward to traveling. On our way to Whistler after flying in to Vancouver we needed a place to eat. I typed in "breweries" and this place came up along the route. Thinking it was a burger and beer place I was excited mainly for the burger (again, not having much hope for the beer). Imagine my disappointment when I found out it was a pizza place (the older I get, the more lactose tolerant I do not). Well hold on to your lug-nuts, they could have served vinegar coated pretzels for all I care. That was one AMAZING beer. Holy cow. I mean, I mean... Shark Repellent? It has wrecked me from any other beer. You couldn't see through that beer with ground penetrating radar! If I could have, I would have all left my clothes behind and packed a case to bring back in my carry-on. All I could bring home was a souvenir can :( I wish I had tried some of the others but when you find a beer you instantly fall in love with, you don't want to be separated. And now that I'm back home there is just a dark hole of sadness that is waiting to be filled either in a return to the West Coast OR for waiting for folks to figure out how to do here what Backcountry is doing over there.

Google
We had a wonderful visit today, thanks to Chris. What a delightful and enthusiastic server! My friend got the tasting flight and I got a blue raspberry sour. Every single beer was delicious and fruity. Not too sour which I like. This place would be my local if I lived closer.

Google
Been a couple times over the years. Today we went as a family of 4 with our two kids who are 2 & 3 years old. All of us enjoyed it! Right from the greeting when we walked in to when we left, staff were helpful and friendly and happy to offer beer choices for my tasting flight. Fries and GOAT pizza were delicious. Decor is fun - our 2 year old loved the moose head 😂 It was nice because it was still quiet when we arrived at 1230pm on a Sunday but tables had filled up by the time we were leaving. Thanks for a nice meal for our family!

Google
Beers here are amazing!! Love the variety of sours. I’m giving two stars because the service was BRUTAL. So bad, we almost left without ordering. We were sat and ignored for a good 15 minutes. After observing, we noticed there’s no designated person for each station (ie, serving and hosting), That would help the flow of things. Idk what is with Squamish but nobody cares or provide decent service yet they expect a 20% tip. I used to love this place for its amazing beer and pizza but am a bit turned off from going again because of this bad service. I did know it was busy but being ignored for 15 + mins is unacceptable.

Update: They gave me another chance to try Backcountry, and I’m so glad I did. We had pizza, beer, and fries. Everything was excellent. They changed my mind. I’ll go back again! :) We usually enjoy their beers, but our first visit to the brewery will likely be our last. We had to wait a long time at the door before anyone showed us to a table, even though there were open spots. Then, our fries took forever to arrive, and when they finally did, they were old and stale! I asked them if they can change it, and after a long wait, they brought us another fries with the same quality. To top it off, I just noticed they charged us for two fries! The whole experience was really disappointing.

Yelp
Went to Backcountry Brewing after a hike in Squamish. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience there! It was Saturday at 4pm and it was 5 of us and we didn't have a reservation but were seated right away. The servers were all sweet and took their time to explain the menu. Also, all their pizzas were freshly made because they were soft and hot! We had heard that they are best known for their pizzas so that's what we got - :: Mushroom parsley - according to the servers, this was their most popular pizza and I can see why! I'm a sucker for mushrooms on pizza and the pizza was so flavourful! Would 5/5 recommend. :: Sauce Boss - also really good! Their tomato sauce was so unique, it was sweet but a little tangy. :: Killa Beez - it had honey, mozzarella, chilli flakes, onion, oregano and it all went so well together!! :: Margherita - one of the best margherita pizza we have ever had!! Also, a lot of their pizzas were vegetarian which is awesome.

Yelp
Great little place to stop for a beer and a bite to eat in Squamish. Lots of IPAs and sours to choose from, plus a couple of pilsners which made my hubby happy. The limited food menu had a chicken sandwich, salad, fries, and some really good/interesting looking pizzas. We split the Caesar salad that would have been big enough for 3-4 as a side and the BBQ chicken pizza. Both were quite tasty, as were 3 of the 4 beers on my iPA/sour flight. My husband gives rave reviews for the Pilsner too.

Huffalump H.

Yelp
Perfect stop to grab beers and pizza. It had plenty of seating and I liked their map tables! You can drink on tap or get cans to go. Pizza was delish! They had good beer selection too. We are IPAs fan so it hit the spot.

Yelp
We visited Backcountry Brewing after a quick stop at the nearby Saturday farmers market. Although we had some food there, we were still a bit nippy. Fortunately, our meat lovers pizza arrived promptly. We arrived just as they opened, so the restaurant wasn't too crowded. However, after 20 minutes, the place was packed, and they were taking names for a 20-minute wait. Despite the wait, the pizza was worth it. It was loaded with meat and topped with a variety of ingredients. The crust was cooked in a wood-fired oven, which gave it a delightful charred flavor. It was a bit of a treat, considering it came from a wood-fired oven. I ordered the non-alcoholic ginger beer, which was honestly the strongest ginger beer I've ever had. It was like drinking a ginger shot. The overall service and ambiance was pleasant. We sat at their glass garage door right beside the entrance. We enjoyed the view of the mountains. The restaurant and bar are quite spacious inside. There's even another area with seating past their merchandise area. If you're a tourist or just driving through and looking for a quick bite, this is definitely a place to check out.

Yelp
Highly recommend trying at least once! Came after a hike and it exceeded expectations. The sour flight was delicious, and we were able to buy cans to go. The cheeseburger pizza was much better than I thought it would be, and I would order it again. There is plenty of seating, and service was good.

Yelp
This place has energy oozing out of it doors and the beer names are interesting for a first date. The pizza is great but the beers are the highlight with lots of sours and hazy options which are my favorites! The place has a clean crisp feel that makes you happy - just go!
google avatar

Yelp
Great pizza and beer Nice ambiance Limited parking though Great service too and clean

Yelp
Good beer, nice ambiance. The wings were probably the best I have had in years or ever. Def recommend.

Yelp
Great service and great food/beer! We came twice in one week! Tried the new cheeseburger pizza and it was surprisingly tasty! Also the outdoorsy vibes of the brewery is very aesthetic. Would reccomend when in Squamish or heading to Whistler.

Yelp
Excellent brews. We try microbreweries all very the US and this one is up on the best list.

Nancy S.

Yelp
Great beer. Good pizza- a bit indercooked qnd ingredients just ok. Service fair. Had to ask for water and regills. Atmosphere good. Lots of families before 8.

Yelp
We came to Backcountry Brewing on a recent trip to Whistler. Along the way, we visited a number of local breweries and this place was definitely my favourite place. Their pizzas really were quite tasty and the selection of beers was quite good overall. We had a great time.
google avatar

Yelp
If you like sour beers, then you must stop over when you are in the area. We love trying new local craft breweries. Backcountry Brewing has lots of sour beer creations. You can try for a flight of sours, as they always have a few on tap in the tasting room/patio. We can't remember the name of the beers because we think they have the longest name we ever see. My choices were GUAVA SOUR and FUZZY PEACH SOUR. They were super refreshing, especially on a hot day. My hubby super enjoyed their IPAs. He even brought a mix 4 pack home. Be sure to stop in when visiting Squamish!
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way to Whistler to pick up some beers for our trip - it's a great spot and ext tile I have to stop by longer to try their pizzas. They have fantastic beers - some of the better ones I have tried from BC Breweries , many highly rated at Untapped! They all have fun creative names and distinctive art work on the cans. We tried a selection of their IPAs ( you can choose single cans or 4 packs ) and ended up buying some merchandise too as they had great hats , glasses and apparel. It's a cool looking place inside, staff we lovely and friendly and this gives another reason to return back to BC
google avatar

Tracey S.

Yelp
Great brewery. They have a huge selection of craft beer. And they have cans u can take home. Service was excellent! We had the chicken wings and pizza. I recommend both. The hot wings weren't too spicy. They were quite tasty and crispy. Highly recommend. Pizza was also great. Nice crust, fresh and toasty. Very good job. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Really happy we stopped here around 4 on the Sunday of a holiday weekend instead of eating in Whistler. Put our names on the list for a 10 minute wait while we walked around the buildings and peeked in the climbing gym. While the menu is limited, everything we got was great. The cheese pizza had 6-8 pieces, large enough to share. With less grease and a little more bread than a thin NYC slice, I bet toppings would shine. I was worried for no reason about the breaded salt and pepper wings - perfectly cooked and way less messy than sauced wings; we did get buffalo sauce on the side. The mustard dressing made the arugula salad ordered to fend off scurvy. The beers were good. We tried four new England ipas which was fun - the house with a mildly fruity finish was my favorite. Even the ginger cider was on the dry side reminding me of sparkling wine. Great names and descriptions. Booth inside was comfortable.

Yelp
This is our favorite brewery in the area! I think I've been to backcountry Brewing more times than I can count, it's the best place to go after a long day outside having fun. The pizza really hits the spot along with the housemade hot sauce but also features their beer as an ingredient! I also really like the fries, and the arugula salad. But where this brewery really shines is obviously the beer. They often have seasonal flavors that are available for a limited time along with their standard drinks that are offered year-round. My favorite are the beers that feature real fruit juice, which I think adds a more interesting flavor profile. Seriously, some of the flavors really blow my mind. I must visit if you're ever in squamish! My only complaint is that I wish the beers were a bit more affordable, but they do make a nice treat here and there.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Wow! We came for the beer but the food was amazing. We had the Pork Schnitzel and it was so good! Great flavour and big enough to share. We also tried the Chicken Sandwich and fries - very good as well. They have a big selection of Sours with tons of flavour. Our server was very attentive as well. We'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
This brewery is a MUST on your way from Vancouver to Whistler - or even for a small day trip. We were here a few years ago on our Canadian trip and I knew we had to stop again this year. The beer is so good and they have a ton of options. The food is amazing! The pizza and dip were so good and came out piping hot and quick. Our server was so nice and helpful. We can't stop talking about this brewery! Just had the best vibe and loved our time there.

Jered R.

Yelp
We found Backcountry after our original dinner plans atop Sea to Sky Gondola were thwarted by an early closure due to possible thunderstorms. Being from out of the area we'd only intended on heading south, back to our Airbnb in N. Vancouver and we're quite happy we made the extra jaunt into town. A lovely backdrop of the Tantalus Range was especially breathtaking that evening with temps around 72F/22C and though we were inside it was open air dining. We shared the "meat your maker" pizza and a side of fries. For two in our party of 4, jalapeños were not to their liking and it was no issue to customize the pizza this way. To drink I had the widowmaker and my 19-yr old enjoyed the "strange women in ponds ..." sour. Everything was delicious. The estimated wait of 20 minutes for a table was actually closer to 5. A couple of us picked up souvenirs (drink coozie and a pin) and they had much more for sale including their abundant selection of brewed ales and ciders.

Yelp
An amazing brewery to stop at after a hike in Squamish or Pemberton or a ski/snowboard day in Whistler. THE best sours - the cherry and cola sour this past weekend was amazing. They have amazing IPAs and pilsners too.. everything is tasty! We have enjoyed their wings in the past but tried out their pizzas. The prosciutto fig one was good - a TAD dry but loved the figs! My guy got the spicy meat pizza and we both really enjoyed his. You'd never suspect such a cool brewery in this business-industrial area but it's a great spot.

Andria K.

Yelp
Great food and beers. Both sandwiches were great and the wings were perfect. Pizzas looked good too. Huge selection of hazy beer!

Stephen S.

Yelp
If there were 10 stars I'd give them gladly! Beer is amazing, staff is out of this world friendly and helpful! The food. Wow so good. Took Chris's recommendation for the prosciutto and fig with a side of their hot sauce (you have to get that) and it was amazing!!! This place has a great vibe and perfect! 10/10!!
google avatar

Molly I.

Yelp
Had a great flight and pizza at Backcountry Brewing on our way home from a weekend in Whistler. The beer list is extensive, and we focused on the sours. You can tell the beer maker has quite a bit of fun playing with candies and flavors. The pizza was stellar. Got the mushroom. The crust was fluffy and light and well made and the shrooms were beautifully seasoned. A definite return will be made.

Yelp
Looks like Squamish now has a bit of a craft beer scene, which I'm sure is great for the locals. Parking is available in the nice large lot in front of the warehouses. Staff are friendly and helpful, especially with managing the gaggle in front. Good to see that there's a demand for this stuff. The inside is nice and modern, and has a rustic feel. There is also a nice large outdoor patio in front. Beers are pretty tasty. Nice interesting long titles. They seem to have a mix of several types, so there is variety. Not a bad place for a pit stop when passing through the area. Now if only the lineup was a bit shorter.
google avatar

Kevin O.

Yelp
Best chicken sandwich in the world hands down, worth every cent and the beers are delicious
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Went 3 weekends in a row for some post hike beers. Love that it's on the way back to the city after hiking at Whistler and Squamish area. Love that they have quite a few options for their beers - especially a few sours to choose from! Favourite is still their Guava beer, for you guava fans out there :P Would highly recommend their pizza & mac & cheese too!
google avatar

Lindsay K.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my first time at this brewery! Lots of beers and I enjoyed all the ones I tried in my flight. Pizza was great too. Friendly service. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Squamish!
google avatar

Nate S.

Yelp
Wings, salads, pizza was all great. Beer was even better if you aren't a classic beer style lover. Outside seating, OK industrial setting but the food and beer was spot on for our family.
google avatar

Tanisha B.

Yelp
Great place to stop in at if you're going through or staying in Squamish. The beer is good. The only major disappointment I had was that the beer I liked the most, the cherry cola sour was sold out of cans so I couldn't bring any home! I was super sad about this because it is such a unique sour, I haven't had anything similar anywhere else. It's a huge plus that they also offer delicious food! We tried the pepperoni pizza and the prosciutto pizza. Both were really tasty however the pepperoni was quite salty. Overall we will definitely recommend to friends and come back next time we are in the area!
google avatar

Rich T.

Yelp
Go there for a stop on the way to Whistler or on the way back from Vancouver. You will go back just for this brewery! merch, food, beeeeeeeer! al so good!
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
I was really impressed by this brewer's flaunting of copyrights I got a flight and was impressed with the sours on tap. However, it was the "everything's coming up milhouse" IPA that sold me. Not because I loved the beer, though it was pretty good, but because my best friend and I have matching t shirts with the phrase and my toddler has now grown out of two of them himself. It warmed my heart so much I filled my trunk with tall boys and bought a hoodie to boot. They appear to have good pizzas but the kitchen was closed the day I was there. Great family friendly vibe.
google avatar

Stephen H.

Yelp
Average pizza. Pepperoni tasted like a step above digiorno. Service was inattentive. Asked for the bill twice, waters never refilled, took a long time for beer despite a small amount of customers. Beer was decent. Would not recommend or go back.
google avatar

Yuri Y.

Yelp
Possibly the best best brewpub I've ever been to between it's great beer, great pizza, and friendly attentive staff. Has retail space where you can buy beer and swag. Tends to be a little busy - it's clearly a popular spot in Squamish. I've waited nearly an hour once. But they use waitlist.me which allows you to see where you are in the queue. Pizza is thin crust and both ones I've had were great. The vegetarian pizzas also sound awesome. The meatball is solid too. On a really hungry day I can eat a meatball and half a pizza. My only complaint about this place is the real generic music selection. First time I went in they were playing emo punk from the mid 90s and second time the Michael Jackson HIStory CD. Nothing against either, and I'm actually a huge Michael Jackson fan, but still, one area of improvement.
google avatar

Kay F.

Yelp
Great place in Squamish for pub food and beers. They have a large selection of sours which was what attracted me in the first place, some unique and not a personal favorite of mine, but also some that were delicious! The beers paired well with the pizza and would recommend as a place to hang out with friends post covid.
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
This review is just for the beer and overall experience (we didn't order any food). This place makes REALLY good beer (and we are from Eugene, Oregon, which is a booming micro-brew region). Especially loved their Hazys and Pale Ale; my partner liked the Imperial Stout. A great place to enjoy refreshments after a day on the trails!
google avatar

Becky M.

Yelp
The service here is friendly and efficient. I was a bit surprised by the location as it's in an industrial area close to strip mall. Nonetheless, the beer is good. I had a taster set of beer, including a hazy ipa, pilsner, grapefruit cider and nitro stout. The pilsner was very crisp and refreshing; I'd get it again in a second. The grapefruit cider was a bit too sweet for me; however, the nitro stout was fabulous. I only wish they would sell it in cans to go or allow growler fills. It was very delicious. There were many pizza options and other food. We didn't eat, but if there had been more salad or varietal options, I may have gone for that.
google avatar

Selena P.

Yelp
If you're an IPA lover, this place is for you... they typically have 5 or more different IPAs to choose from, and they are amazing. But what really sets them apart is the pizza, WOW! Small but very curated selection of pizza flavors (I think 5 - my fave are mushroom/kale and prosciutto/fig/arugula) made on home made crust. I'm not even a pizza lover, but I freaking love their pizza and make sure to I always have leftovers to take home. Nothing makes me happier than taking a couple of slices on my rock climbing day at the Chief and enjoying it with a view. Their dry salt and pepper chicken wings are yummy as well, thank you BB for wings not covered in sweet and spicy mess. This place is less of a bar, more of a restaurant with a 1.5 hr time limit during busy dinner hours so I like to hit it in the off hours but they recently added and outside seating area as well.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
What a great vibe in this brewery! From the friendly staff to the cabin style decor, this place screams community. My partner and I were just in Squamish for the day taking in the sights and thought we'd stop on for a late lunch. I was jazzed that they had a cherry cola sour and it totally lived up to its name. Deeeeelish and tastes so much like the sour candy. For food, my partner ordered the mushroom pizza which has kale, parm, cream sauce and a hearty sprinkling of cheese plus I think some truffle oil. MY GOD ITS SO GOOD. This was one of the best mushroom pizzas I've ever had. The cheese was goooooey and stretchy and the toppings were beautifully in every bite. Get this pizza if you go here!!! You won't be disappointed. Now for the not so good news and the unfortunate reason I had to dock a star was the Korean wings were like a salt lick. Whatever sauce is made for these wings, it's been too seasoned. I love me some Korean style wings but I really wish they were less salty and more spicy. Perhaps we just got a highly salty batch but I have a feeling it's the sauce itself. The ranch on the other hand for dipping was incredible and I needed it to cut the salt of the wings. Loved this joint overall and will be back!
google avatar

Roxana M D.

Yelp
Fun, social place to be, great bar service and oven-baked pizzas! You will have to take the Queenways street, parallel to the highway. You will always have a great time here. Enjoy!
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
In the hills of Squamish is the rather unique place. It's in an industrial complex that would normally have industry versus a full on brewery/restaurant. It's self serve meaning you go to the counter & order your food & then sit down. They bring the food. Mine was a Greek salad & a house pizza. Not very good. Over cooked with a stale crust. Greek salad was good but not great. I'd do this over again but just a different way.
google avatar

Brett D.

Yelp
For starters, this brewery had some of the best beers we found in the Squamish area. We're on the lookout for west coast style Pale Ale and IPAs, and they did not disappoint there at all. We visited the brewery twice in two days, as we were staying in a hotel very close by. The kitchen was not open on the first night, but was opened up on the second night. The place was absolutely packed, and we were lucky to just get two seats up by the front windows. We ordered the Margherita Pizza, and it was spectacular. I would highly recommend at least one stop at Backcountry if you are in the Squamish area.
google avatar

Becca M.

Yelp
My absolutely fav brewery in the Lower mainland. Their sours are the literal best thing ever and rotate regularly. Also the pizza here is pretty damn good !!
google avatar

Monika W.

Yelp
3.5 stars. 30min wait at 7pm on a Tuesday late September (4ppl). Beer was quite tasty but mild I tried the lager and the raspberry sour on tap. Their women's washroom needed some attention but hey, covid. We ordered 4 different pizzas (forrager, Mexican, prosciutto and fig, and pepperoni $17-19/ea) and 2 orders of their hush puppies. The pizzas are not super thin and the crust is quite filling. My favourite was the forrager and if you dip the pizza in the spicy hush puppy sauce it's quite excellent. Staff were friendly but the pizzas all came a few minutes apart and the hush puppies came some time after all the pizzas. Happy to come here but next time I'll try another brewery.

Yelp
We stayed in Squamish one weekend for a hike. Stopped by and stumbled upon an event in the beer garden. I asked for samples but purposely skipped their IPAs thinking that, pshh, it's going to be too hoppy and bitter anyways, why bother. Then my friends all had the Widowmaker and exclaimed with immense joy. I took a sip and my life forever changed. It was hoppy, yes, but delicate and balanced and crisp and many other words that I should probably be using to describe a good IPA. There was no unpleasant after taste. It was the perfect thing to drink in a tent with awesome music and gorgeous mountains in the backdrop. We did get some of their pizzas - truffle, prosciutto, and wake n bacon - and their chopped salad. The dough was very good, especially for a brewery. I liked the truffle one the best. Not feeling the bacon one - and that was after we spread the sunny side up egg across all the pieces. Definitely do not recommend the chopped salad. We only got it to feel less guilty about eating pizzas and drinking beers. I successfully sneaked some Widowmakers back to Seattle with me. Three 4-packs are not going to last me that long though, so this will be a mandatory stop on my next trip to BC for sure. Oh, their It's Not Me, It's You, is also phenomenal, and it's not just because of the name.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Very casual and lively atmosphere. Came during family day weekend and it was packed, but we were able to get a table right away. We shared the banh mi tater tots and prosciutto and fig pizza, both of which were great but nothing too crazy. The banh mi tater tots didn't really taste anything like banh mi besides the few pickled vegetables on the side. What really stood out here was their delicious beers. My boyfriend got one of the IPAs and I got the coconut and chocolate stout, both of which were incredible!
google avatar

Jashua P.

Yelp
Excellentish IPAs, pizza, and tart tropical smoothie beer types will like the BURNING MY LADY CANDLE MANGO TANGERINE SOUR! So goodish in Squamish! Free parking, it's off the side to the mini-industrial mall. Apple maps shows it placed incorrectly, but I was able to drive around and find it easy enough.
google avatar

Juliana S.

Yelp
We had the mushroom pizza which was very well done-just the right amount of toppings. The surprise for me was the gyro sandwich. So good. The sauces were spot on and it was truly beyond delicious, lucky I ordered it on a whim. I don't drink beer but my partner said it's as also really good. They were having a block party when we were there which was fun!!
google avatar

Ally S.

Yelp
Fig pizza. First time having fig on pizza and all I can say is that I want more!!! It was tasty and the beers were delicious. Would for sure get this again. I wish they were located closer to my house.
